Friday Morning Music Shuffle - Taking It Up a Notch Mix

Oh, hear this Robert Zimmerman
I wrote a song for you
About a strange young man called Dylan
With a voice like sand and glue
Some words of truthful vengeance
They could pin us to the floor
Brought a few more people on
And put the fear in a whole lot more"
David Bowie

Happy 72nd Birthday Robert Zimmerman and also to that strange young man named Dylan...

Well, well, well...  I thought we had covered a lot of musical ground yesterday, but we may have just topped ourselves.  You be the judge.

Pre-shuffle:

We start things out with a performance of a Ukrainian folk song.

1.  "Ой Полечко, Поле (Oj Polechko, Pole" by Katarina Ljahovic, Mike Romaniak, Patrick Power and Stephen Kreuger (by the way, Patrick Power is better known to E2TG readers as 1/2 of Valued Customer, and he may well be a musical genius in my book)

2. "Old Friend" by Sea Wolf (another cool track from the L.A. based Indie Rock band who take their name from a Jack London novel)

3.  "This is a Notice" by Mic Harrison and the High Score (This is Knoxville Rock! Mic Harrison was a member of the V-Roys and Superdrag before teaming up with The High Score.  This song is pretty damn awesome raver.)

4.  "Psycho Killer" (B-Side featuring Arthur Russell) by Talking Heads (a recently released alternate take of the Talking Heads classic featuring a well utilized Cello)

5. "Only Sixteen" by Craig Douglas (1959 cover of a Sam Cooke song by a UK Pop singer)

6. "Boys Keep Me Up at Night" by Jeanette Lynne (another gem from the You've Got Me album)

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle - Break on Through Mix

Well all sorts of bad things happened yesterday.  Sending love and prayers and thoughts to the people of Oklahoma.

Also, remembering Ray Manzarek of The Doors who passed away yesterday. A true creative genius who shaped many generations of music.

We got some songs - as we are reminded again that Music Heals....

Ear to the Ground _ 2+

May 15, 2011

This is my very first post, and I don't know exactly how this is going to work.  A more informative post will follow, but I want to see how this works.
If you are reading this, it worked just fine.  If not, well - it didn't.  Or something....

- Work-in-Progress

Somehow, I missed that this past Wednesday marked the two year anniversary of Ear to the Ground.

I just want to give a huge shout out and thanks to ALL the awesome people I've met as a result of writing this. Blogging can at times feel like shouting into a void, but what has kept me going besides all of the great music I've "discovered and uncovered" are the new friends I've met along the way.

As I've often said, I'm all about looking ahead while carrying forward the legacy of the past. Okay, I don't know that I've ever said that, but I'm saying it now.

So... no big to-do.  How about some music...

Friday Morning Music Shuffle - Illustrious Illusions Mix

'Tis a rainy Friday in Nashville, Tennessee.  Fortunately, the rain let up for my daily walk up the hill to higher ground. Even more fortunate, I got to listen to some killer tunes, and as always, I want to share them with you.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle - Constantly Confused Mix

"Its astounding, time is fleeting Madness takes its toll"

When we stop to consider the alternative - life, no matter what else it is or seems to be, is a grand adventure, a gift, and a prize offering endless possibilities....

The rational mind pales before the majesty that is imagination.

I offer up another collection of songs which helped me navigate the dangerous waters of life in the still early portion of the 21st Century.

PRE-SHUFFLE:

"Fever Dream" by Young Summer (from her forthcoming album)

"Ultra Puzzle Song" by Ghost and Goblin (a weird little number from their new album)

"In a Delorean" by Game Theory (One of my favorite songs by them)

Wednesday Morning Music Non-Shuffle + Shuffle - Nothing Gold Mix

Did I happen to mention that I like irony and coincidence and the amazing tendency of life to throw unexpected curve-balls and how that can be a great joy if your mind and heart are open to receive what ever life has to offer?  No? Well, I do.

So, I write a music blog, and I live in Nashville, Tennessee. If you've been paying attention, you will have realized I am pretty open-minded when it comes to music. I generally hate genre labels, and even though I tend to think that most mainstream music sucks (I'm an old punk what can I say), I will acknowledge when something mainstream strikes my fancy.

All that being said, I'm constantly amazed and pleased by all of the incredible Country and Countryish music being made all over the world.  Honestly, as far as I'm concerned you can call it Americana, Alt-Country, Roots Music or whatever you want. From Michigan to New Mexico to California to Europe, there is great music being made that owes a direct or indirect nod to The Carter Family, Johnny Cash, George Jones, Hank Williams Sr and so many more legends.  It may carry with it a Punk rock spirit or a pinch of something else....

Ah, I've done on long enough.  Let's get to the business at hand.

Nikki Sue and the Bad News are about to release their first full-length album, Nothing Gold.  The album will be released May 23 (digital only for now) with a release party scheduled for the 24th at the Clash Bar in Clifton, NJ.  I have been given the great honor of getting an early listen.  My thoughts (random and otherwise) commence after the JUMP

Friday Morning Music Non-Shuffle - Lucky Dog Barking at a Jukebox Mix

Well once again, fate, circumstance, procrastination and mysterious forces beyond my control or understanding have combined to lead me to this very point.... namely, as I've mentioned several times, I am way over due to for a wrap-up of April. As you may recall, at the end of March I did a big ole summary for the first three months on 2013, gave a shout out to old friends who made new music and welcomed a few new bands into the Ear to the Ground Family. I resolved at that time to try my best to do this same exercise monthly.

April was an amazing month for new music.  From our old friends, we covered new albums by Skeletons in the Piano, Taco Land, Killing Kuddles, The Danbury Lie, The Imperial Rooster and Black Jake and the Carnies.  - I've probably forgotten some, and if so, I sincerely apologize.

Skeletons in the Piano  - Buy

Taco Land - Buy

Killing Kuddles - Buy

The Danbury Lie - Buy

The Imperial Rooster -  Download

Black Jake and the Carnies - Buy

Now on to our new additions to the Ear to the Ground family (again family is my designation and no consent is required...)

After the JUMP, we get down to business with today's Mix (Unshuffled)

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle - rearviewmirrormix

Wow! May is sure flying by, and I still have some wrap-up to do for April - ah well, when I can, when I can...   I have a nifty selection of songs today, so let's get to it.

Pre-Shuffle Shuffle:

1. "If You Would Love Me, Too" by Prattle On, Rick (A Nashville artist who I "discovered" via Twitter. Really digging this guy and wondering why it's taken me so long to catch up with him.  The video in our Playlist is for another song of his - as are several of the songs today).

2. "I Am" by Sealight (Our friends from across the pond are back with a new song - a follow up to their Dead Letters EP which I reviewed some time back in my very first Ear to the Ground record review!  I Am can be found on a Sampler put out by the band's French Label, Commission 45.

3."Stealing Romance" by Milk Carton Kids

4."Without You" by Natalie Maines

5.  "Failing Love (acoustic)" by Seth Philpott

The Milk Carton Kids and Seth Philpott tracks were grabbed from Noisetrade.  There is always fresh new music up for grabs at Noisetrade.com, and as always tip if you can, spread the word and support the artists however you are able.

The Natalie Maines' track is the lead track from her long-anticipated and brand new album Mother.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle - Fly Over Mix

Some may say, I take way too much pride in presenting morning shuffles that span such a diverse landscape of musical marvels.  Some may say I would be far more successful if I focused on one genre or only wrote about those certain "buzz worthy" artists that you can read about in all of the other music blogs. Some may say, I should stick to the script and just echo back the language of the music promoters and publicists.

I don't bother responding except to offer up today's pre-shuffle and shuffle.

PRE-SHUFFLE:

"I'm One of Three" by EndAnd (new punk music from Brooklyn)
"River Rose" by Meat Puppets (the post-punk legends are back)
"Bangs" by Valued Customer (some music from our crazy friends from Toronto)
"'Til I'm With You" by Neighbour (More from the awesome Kacie Williams)
"Waiting for Something New" by Mozes and the Firstborn (This band is from Antwerp and I first heard  them over  the weekend - dig it)
"Cloudy Morning Blues" by Black Cold Bottles (Modern rock from Sao Paulo)

Monday Morning Music Shuffle - Swoony Day Mix

I'm back after an extended and mostly rainy weekend.  Dreary, drizzly morning drive and walk, made more than tolerable by the superlative collection of fine tunes and tracks. By the way, my Current Month Playlist that I shuffle up for the Morning Shuffle had dropped to about 150 late last week, but over the weekend it has skyrocketed up above 200 again. We'll begin chipping away, as we present some Pre-Shuffle and Shuffle Shuffle tunes for this, the 6th day of May.

Pre-Shuffle:

Jeanette Lynne's 11 second "Intro" to her fabulous album You've Got Me serves has the intro into today's Pre-shuffle.

Kyle Andrews  "Connecting the Dots"

Set in Stone doing "The Way I Felt" (a Twitter discovery from this weekend)

Game Theory "Toby Ornette"

Those Darlins "Glass to You"

Holy Grail "Ride the Void" - Why not.. some infectious Metal via Amazon's Free Music from Rising Artists

Game Theory "Rolling with the Moody Girls"

The next song served as a transition into the Shuffle - and we included it after the JUMP
