Music City Monday Morning Shuffle - In the Mail Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Okay! It is Monday, and it's time for the first Music City Monday in a few weeks. Since it has been a while, I'll explain.  Unlike the other shuffles I post (which come from music saved to my phone0, Music City Monday comes from a constantly in progress  Spotify Playlist that I created. The purpose is to showcase music from Nashville's past and present, and to cover the many genres and styles of music that have originated in Nashville. It is not at all complete, and I am regularly making additions to the playlist.

If you want to check out the playlist for yourself, HERE IS A LINK

Let's just get to the music....

"Nashville" by Little Bandit

It seems a little too "on the nose" to start the Music City Monday shuffle with a song called "Nashville", but that's what just what the shuffle came up with, and when that song is by Little Bandit from Breakfast Alone - the debut album. Little Bandit features Alex Caress - one of the best new songwriters in Nashville. He is backed by a great band of East Nashville musicians including the late Ben Eyestone on drums.

"Little White Cat" by Anne McCue

Next up, we have a track from the 2015 album, Blue Sky Thinkin',  by Nashville/Australia singer-songwriter Anne McCue.  McCue, in addition to be being a great songwriter and a killer guitar player is also a DJ on WXNA - the Nashville community radio station where Double Shot airs.

"Who's the Dummy Now?" by David Olney

Next, we have a former WXNA DJ and a Nashville songwriting legend - David Onley. This is taken from a live album Live at Norm's River Road House, Vol. 1. This performance features Sergio Webb and Jack Irwin.   The song comes from Onley's 2007 album One Tough Town. David Onley has been an integral part of the Nashville music community over a career that has spanned five decades, so far.

"Sheriff of Love" by Walk the West

In the mid to late 1980s, if you wanted to see high energy rock and roll with western flavor, you could check out Walk the West playing around town led by the late Paul Kirby.  I was fortunate enough to see Walk the West a few times back in the day.  I particularly remember a sweaty, all-ages show at the Cannery Upstairs (back in the day, there were only two venues at the Cannery complex).  The band whipped the crowd into a frenzy - a remember a shirtless teen with a cowboy hat riding the stacks of speakers like they were a bronco. This has always been a favorite of mine.

"That's Rock and Roll" by Tim Carroll

Next, we have a song you can often hear live on a Friday night at The 5 Spot. Tim Carroll has been a fixture in East Nashville for many years, and his regular Friday gig at The 5 Spot is a "must see" if you come to Nashville.  As this song suggests, Carroll plays rock and roll, and he has a large and ever-growing repertoire of original (and wonderful) songs to choose from so you can go back again and again, and it never loses it's appeal.  This is from his album Look Out!

"Rubbermaid Fiancee" by The Screamin' Cheetah Wheelies

The Screamin' Cheetah Wheelies were one of the great Nashville bands of the 1990s. Their lead singer, Mike Farris has gone on to a prolific solo career.  This is a track from a 2003 album called Lamanamanumi.  The band's name came from the comic strip The Far Side.
"She Hung the Moon (Until it Died)" by Jason Ringenberg

Next, we have a solo track from Jason of Jason and the Scorchers. It is from a compilation called Best Tracks and Side Tracks 1979-2007.  It was originally released on Ringenberg's 2004 album Empire Builders.

"Blue Sky Thinkin'" by Anne McCue

Next up, we have the title track from Anne McCue's 2015 album.

"Ecstasy" by The White Animals

And we close things out with a track from one of the pioneering bands of the Nashville rock scene that exploded in the 1980s. From a collection called 3000 Nights in Babylon. This song was the title track of the band's 1984 album.
