Trending Thursday Morning Shuffle - Dog Man Don't Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Last night was Week 2 of the Bradbury, Latham, Nace residency at The 5 Spot.  Jon and Darrin did solo sets, and Nick Nace did a full band set. Highlights for me were Jon doing the original version of "Major Key" which I had never heard - it was incredible. Darrin doing "Junkie Love" which I had not heard in a while - which included a cute, if reluctant sing-a-long.  Darrin is promising awesomeness next week - so make your plans to attend Next Wednesday night at 6pm at The 5 Spot.

(I  need to update the poster)

Ben de la Cour opened the show - he sang a new song - which was fabulous.  I am thrilled to announce that after some intense and brutal negotiations, Ben will be the special guest opener of Week 2 of the E2TG  Residency in June (June 14).   Here is the rundown in case you've missed it:

Week 1:  Clark Paterson, The Big Dumb, Rayvon Pettis
Week 2: The End Men, Ted Drozdowski's Psychedelic Circus, Ben de la Cour
Week 3:  Brian Milligram, Microwave Mountain, The Coal Men
Week 4: Joanna Barbera, Bee Taylor, Eli Cook

I am stoked about this line-up and I hope you will make plans to attend some or all of these shows. I think it represents a great cross-section of the music that has made E2TG what it is, and I am honored that these talented folks are willing to perform.

Well - it is Thursday, and that means we dig back into our New Music playlist for "Trending Thursday" - let's shuffle!

"Dollar and a Dime" by Dave Hogan
"Never Far From Home" by Dave Hogan

Right off the bat, we have a twofer Thursday from Dave Hogan. Hogan is part of the large and growing Connecticut contingent of E2TG favorites. I believe he was the first Connecticut artist that I met in person.  My first connection to his music came from his time with the late great Grimm Generation, but he has been making music for many years.  His latest solo album is called Third Life and these are two of the final three tracks we have to feature from that release. Hogan also hosts a radio show on WPKN - a community radio station in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

"The Golden Rule" by Don Gallardo

E2TG Favorite and one of my favorite songwriters and humans - Don Gallardo has a brand new album called Still Here.  This is our first listen - and a fine first listen at that. "The Golden Rule" - an ode to Gallardo's young son.  Collaborations (songwriting and singing) play a huge part in Still Here.  This song was co-written by the great Mando Saenz and features the vocal magic of Luella.  Much more to come from this album!

"OK, This Is The Pops" by Poptone

More music from the forthcoming eponymous debut album by Poptone which is due out June 8. Poptune - features Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins  (Bauhaus, Love and Rockets, Tones on Tail)  and Diva Dompe who is Haskins daughter. The album includes classics from all three of Ash and Haskins' former bands plus more. This is a song that was originally recorded by Tones on Tail - released in 1983.

"Catmandu" by Shriekback

Shriekback are back! They have a new album called Why Anything? Why This? which will be released a week from tomorrow (on May 25).  It is their 14th Studio album, and I have been loving what I'm hearing.  This track from that album actually premiered yesterday on Slicing Up Eyeballs - and you can take a listen HERE.

"The Science of Goodbye" by Angie Aparo

On his latest album Georgia singer-songwriter takes an experimental approach to his songs. At the heart, these are great songs - his experimental approach works very well. When I saw him live - before I heard the album - I was deeply impressed by the sonic gymnastics of the band he assembled. Having heard the album, it is remarkable how he is able to bring the experimental nature of recordings to life on stage.  The album is called Life is a Flower, Life is a Gun.

"Smithereens" by connect_icut

We started this shuffle off with two songs by singer-songwriter Dave Hogan from Connecticut.  We close it out with an nearly 9 minute track from the album Music for Granular Synthesizer by Vancouver, BC producer/artist connect-icut. Near as I can tell, there is no connection between connect_icut the act and Connecticut the state. This is wildly experimental but accessible electronic music. This is our penultimate track to feature from the album.  It is also the last track on the album.
