All of this happened a long time ago when the world was a very different place. Of course, none of us knew that at the time.

I am continuing to work on my Spotify playlists for E2TG.  So far, I have completed three - January - May 2018.  These are meant to be a cross-section of music I featured during those months - not necessarily music released in those months.   If you are interested, you can check out the playlists (links below)  and follow my personal profile to find out when new playlists are created.

E2TG January 2018
E2TG February 2018
E2TG March 2018
E2TG April 2018
E2TG May 2018 NEW

Time to dive headlong back into another work week... Although, I generally don't look forward to Mondays, I do look forward to Music City Monday here at E2TG when we features a shuffle from a playlist that covers a broad cross-section of the musical past and present of Nashville (as filtered through my sensibilities).

We have some cool stuff to feature today, so let's dive in....

"Dance with the One (Who Brought You Here)" by Erica Blinn

We start things off with a song we premiered here at E2TG almost a year ago.  This is from Erica Blinn's album Better Than Gold.  I just recently got to see Blinn live with her band, and she put on one hell of a show.  This is a great song, and I was so happy to get the chance to premiere it.

"Talk about It" by Western Medication

Last week, we had our first ever Western Medication song on E2TG, and today we have our second from their 2018 album Taste. Western Medication have, deservedly, been getting a lot of attention.

"God Only Knows" by John Prine

News of a new John Prine album of original music is always welcome. The Tree of Forgiveness was not only highly anticipated, but since its release back in April - it has received wide-spread acclaim.  This song was written by Prine with Phil Spector.

"The Slow Train Never Ends" by Jason and the Scorchers

Next up, we have the deans of Nashville rock music - with a track taken form their compilation Wildfires and Misfires: Two Decades of Outtakes and Rarities. This song was written by Jason Ringenberg.

"Big Shot" by The White Animals

The White Animals are one of the few bands that could legitimately challenge my previous statement calling Jason and the Scorchers The deans of Nashville rock music.  The White Animals formed in 1980, and in their prime they played close to 300 dates a year.  They were wildly popular in the southeast. They still play on a semi-regular basis - with a show scheduled for October 13th at Exit/In with a reunited Cactus Brothers opening the show.

"Jody" by Tom House

Any discussion of Nashville music that doesn't give at least a passing mention to Tom House - is seriously lacking. I keep using the phrase - but it is true - Tom House is a true Nashville original. For years, he has marched to his own beat and written consistently great songs and put out consistently wonderful album.  This song is from his album Inside These Walls.

"Lovin' All Night" by Rodney Crowell

Nashville is lucky to call Rodney Crowell one of their own.  This is a song that was originally a single from his 1992 Life is Messy album.  A great song, and a great addition to the shuffle today.

"Black Sky Revisited" by Solar Twin

Solar Twin is the current recording project of East Nashville (by way of Seattle) singer-songwriter Shane Tutmarc. This is a track from the 2017 album Pink Noise.  Solar Twin casts Tutmarc great songs into a unique style that adds electronic elements.  E2TG was fortunate to have Shane be an impromptu part of our 7th Anniversary Residency.

"Dielya Downtown" by Self

Self keeps popping up in these Music City Monday shuffles - Matt Mahaffey - with Self and Spongebath Records were instrumental in the what I consider the second wave of Nashville's underground rock scene in the mid 1990s.  We have been featuring songs from the band's second album Half-Baked Serenade.

"Constant Attention" by The White Animals

Next we have a second track from The White Animals. Both tracks from from a 2000 compilation called 3000 Nights in Babylon.

"Titanic" by David Olney
David Olney is Nashville renaissance man.  Since arriving in town in the early 1970s (and blowing away all of the amazing songwriters of the early Outlaw country scene), he has consistently released new music, written great songs, ventured into poetry and acting.  His live performance (regardless of the venue or audience) have a legendary quality to them.  Olney's set to release his latest album This Side or The Other. Olney has a release show scheduled for September 1 at The 5 Spot.  I consider it one of the highlights of my time doing E2TG that I had David Olney headline one of shows during the sixth anniversary residency.  This is his song about the famous shipwreck told from the P.O.V. of the Iceberg.
