Featured Friday Morning Shuffle - Chaos Precaution Phase II Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

All of this happened a long time ago when the world was a very different place. Of course, none of us knew that at the time.

Words No Music A Reading coming Thursday, November 15, 2018 6:30pm Radio Cafe Nashville. No Cover, tips accepted and books will be for sale. We have an incredible line-up featuring David Olney,  Rod Picott, Luke Powers, Rebecca Weiner Tompkins, and yours truly. All but me are incredible musicians and songwriters, but for this show - they will let their words speak for them without music.  I will be reading from The Drift plus some selections from a forthcoming book.   FACEBOOK EVENT HERE!

Whew! It's Friday!  It's been a bit of whirlwind week for me. I moved on Wednesday (I am beyond grateful to have such great friends - a solid crew of wonderful people who made the move as painless as possible). I'll be unpacking and decorating the new place for weeks, but I'm at least settled. I had two meetings for WXNA - big stuff is happening.

We close the week with a pretty cool Featured Friday shuffle - a couple of first listens, some returning favorites, some big names, and a pretty diverse mix.  Let's go!

"Angel Sigh" by Spiritualized

First up, we have our second listen to the reissue of Fucked Up Inside - the 1993 live album by British space rock band Spiritualized. The album was originally only sold via mail order, but in one week, it is being released on Black Vinyl by Glass Redux records. The song was originally released on the band's debut album Lazer Guided Melodies. The band was formed in 1990 by three former members of the band Spacemen 3.

"It Don't Make No Sense" by This Frontier Needs Heroes

This was a surprise, I kind of forgot I had a couple of songs left from Real Job - by Nashville based This Frontier Needs Heroes.  This song is especially appropriate this week - check out the lyric video in the playlist below to see why. Main TFNH member Brad Lauretti has been touring pretty heavily in Europe lately.

"Chaos" by Taylor Barton

Next, we have our first listen to House of Light, the 8th Studio album by New York City based singer-songwriter Taylor Barton. Barton has a pretty amazing band backing her. Including the album producer Tony Shanahan - who is Patti Smith's bandleader. Also featured on the album is guitarist G.E. Smith (Bob Dylan, SNL Band among many other credits) who is Barton's husband. In fact. Barton's first song was written on Dylan's tour bus. Sarah Jarosz also appears on a couple of songs.  I am digging this album so far, and I can't wait to write about the rest of the album.

"In the Moonlight" by The Venus Fly Trap

Next up, we have the first of two tracks from Icon - by gothic/dark wave/ post-punk band The Venus Fly Trap who are based in Northhampton UK. I am really digging this album, and this is a great song.

"Phase II" by Thurston Moore

Out today! We have a track from Thurston Moore's 1995 experimental album  'Klangfarbenmelodie.. And The Colorist Strikes Primitiv'  The album was originally released on CD only in New Zealand. Today's release 180 gm heavyweight vinyl is the first vinyl release.  Moore (yes this is Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth) teamed with free jazz drummer Tom Surgal for the first time here. They would record again together in 1996, 2000, and 2015 - including a 2000 collaboration with Beck.

"Precaution" by Pylon Reenactment Society

This is the final track we have to feature from Part Time Punk Sessions by Athens, Georgia's Pylon Reenactment Society - who put on one of the best and funnest shows I saw this year - at The Basement early in the year. Featuring original Pylon vocalist, Vanessa Briscoe Hay - backed by a talented band - the Reenactment Society keeps the spirit of the legendary Athens' band Pylon alive and well.

"Bleecker Street! Chase Me!" by Hologram Teen

Next up, we have another track from Between the Funk and the Fear by Sterolab keyboardist Morgane Lhote recording as Hologram Teen.  Great stuff. I am really happy about the diversity of music that I am able to feature here at E2TG.

"Icon" by The Venus Fly Trap

We close with the title track by The Venus Fly Trap - their second song in the shuffle. A great fade out for the shuffle and the week.
