Music City Monday Morning Shuffle - Lit Up Like a Halo Mix (Just a Glimmer Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

*Note: The video playlist at the bottom of the post attempts to closely approximate the shuffle I listened to on my way to work this morning. When a video for a song was not available, I substituted another song by the same artist. When I could not find any videos by an artist, I included a related video or did not include a video for that track. This blog may reference unreleased tracks, however, no unreleased music is ever included.

Week 4 of the E2TG Residency is happening Wednesday night October 16 - with Josh Gray and Meghan Hayes providing the musical entertainment.  Gray and Hayes each released wonderful new albums in 2019.  Josh Gray's Songs of the Highway covers his move to Nashville in the context of these complex times in which we live.  Meghan Hayes' Seen Enough Leavers deals with heartbreak and loss in wonderfully artistic and healing way.   They will both be backed by full bands with come hot local players.   Don't miss it!

Now, it is time for another Music City Monday shuffle!

"Full of Bourbon" by Becky Warren

We start off with a track from Becky Warren's powerhouse 2016 concept album - War Surplus - dealing with PTSD among returning soldiers.  The follow-up album Undesirable was released in 2018.

"(When You're On The) Losing End" by Jon Byrd

Next up, we have a Neil Young cover from Jon Byrd's now classic Byrd's Auto Parts album.  It is the album that gave the name to his band. The original was included on Young's 1969 second studio album, Everybody Knows This is Nowhere. Coincidentally, this album came up in my research for a Double Shot show yesterday.

Mellow My Mind" by Emma Swift

Speaking of coincidences... next up, we have another Neil Young cover - this from East Nashville's own Emma Swift.   Swift's song comes from a split single put out with our old friend Ponyboy.  The Young original was on his 1975 sixth album, Tonight's the Night.

"Stewball" by Loudon Wainwright III

Next up, we have one-time Nashville resident Loudon Wainwright III from his 2018 compilation, Years in the Making.  Here he is performing the traditional folk song about the 18th Century British racehorse.

"I'm Movin' On" by Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings

Next up, we have two Outlaw country legends covering a Hank Snow classic from the 2014 release Out Among the Stars.  The album was recorded in the early mid-1980s by Billy Sherrill but not released until the 2010s.

"Set You Free" by Aaron Lee Tasjan

Karma for Cheap: Reincarnated is the latest released from the ever enigmatic Tasjan.  It is a mostly acoustic re-imagining of  his Karma For Cheap album. I have been a fan of ALT's songwriting since I first heard him, and it is great to hear some of his more recently released material in a stripped down setting.

"Sermon" by Mercury Rev (feat. Margo Price)

Okay - Mercury Rev are from Buffalo, New York, but this track features Margo Price, and that makes it eligible for Music City Monday in my book and since this is my blog, my book is what matters. This is taken from the Mercury Rev released from February of this year, Bobbie Gentry's The Delta Sweete Revisited. A re-imaging of Bobbie Gentry's Delta Sweete album first released in 1968.

"Mary" by The Big Dumb

Looking forward to next week's E2TG Residency finale with Microwave Mountain and The Big Dumb - we have The Big Dumb from We Get Along Too Well. The song was written by Javi Jones with Griffin Winton taking lead vocals here - on this tale of young love, sex, jealousy, and guilt.

"Half the Truth" (Live) by Royal Court of China

Next up, we have a live track from that Return to Elliston Square Live at Exit/In album. The track was originally on Geared and Primed - the follow-up to the self-titled album which found Joe Blanton and Chris Mekow (who co-wrote) continuing the band following the departure Oscar Rice and Robert Logue and taking on a more straight forward hard rock sound. We included the original music video for this song - which was directed by Sam Raimi and produced by Bruce Campbell.

"Eyelids" by Braintapes

We close with our first listen to Lorna by Braintapes.  Braintapes is an alternative rock band featuring three members of The Big Dumb (Stephen Nicholas Roberts, Griffin Winton, and Daniel Dolive, along with Drew D'Oliveira.  Cool stuff and a great way to end this shuffle!
