Got to make this quick - I'm running late. Saturday is another one of those impossible choices (musically-speaking in Nashville): The Foobar is holding a multi-act afternoon show that features: Jeff Shepherd, Year of October, Susie Oleson, and Adrian + Meredith, and more! Intersecting with the Adrian+Meredith part of the show will be some other awesome options: David Olney returns to Bobby's Idle Hour, Jon Latham opens for The Whistles and The Bells at The Basement. Aaron Lee Tasjan returns to Nashville for a full band show - and his band include the also recently returned Brian Wright at Soulshine Pizza, and then later on Zach Schmidt + Patrick Kinsley & A Fistful of Dollars open for Cataline Crime at The 5 Spot. And probably tons of other cool stuff... get out and do something... you cannot go wrong with any of these selections...
Tonight: Tim Carroll Happy Hour 6-8:30 at The 5 Spot, and later on Kevin Gordon and his band are at The Family Wash. If you have tickets, Those Darlins are playing their final show (a sell out) at The Basement East.

Let's see... I attended the final show of the Jason Ringenberg residency at The 5 Spot. Jason's guests were Kristi Rose and Fats Kaplin. Fats Kaplin is a wonder, Kristi Rose sings like an angel, and Jason is Jason! The night included: Fats, Kristi, and Jason covering a Gun Club song. And even though, I didn't win the Farmer Jason eggs, Jason did play my request, "Don't Go Back to Rockville" - which I first heard him sing in November 1985 when he joined R.E.M. on the stage of Vanderbilt Memorial Gym. Plus I got an XL Farmer Jason t-shirt! I did have a brain-fart moment and told Jason that The Sluggers played a Gun Club song when they opened for the Scorchers at Cat's Record. His reaction told me I was mistaken, and after giving some thought and digging into brain cells I thought had been lost years ago, I remember that it was Flipper that they covered. Don't ask me why I mistook Gun Club for Flipper except they were both bands that I loved and who had achieved legendary status just a relatively few short years after they formed.
After that, a bunch of folks migrated over to The Family Wash for a J.J. Cale tribute night put together by Pete Finney. An amazing band backed an all-star cast of guests including: Jon Byrd, Kevin Gordon, Mac Gayden, Jonell Mosser, Dave Coleman, Bill Lloyd, Nikki G, Jack Pearson, Pat Bergeson, and Rick Schell. Plus a couple of songs by the awesome East Nashvill band Los Colognes.
A big crowd full of really awesome people at both events on the eastside.
Meanwhile, Darrin Bradbury was representing East Nashville, well, in the deep, deep south of Nashville (Franklin), where he did the recurring Vietti Chili promo and totally owned the moment. You can see it HERE. Darrin comes in at the 37 minute mark. Great news is that Darrin will be doing a full set a MCR in June! I will be on the bus for that!
On to the shuffle which I think speaks for itself:

Thinking today about those pivot moments in life, when trajectories get changed...
I have been reading a book called Outlaw about Waylon, Willie, and Kris that is a lot about Nashville in the 60s and early 70s... Much about the "establishment" and the creative forces that bucked the system to carve their own path - or to follow a path blazed by Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan. It has me thinking a lot about Nashville in 2016....
Tonight is promising to be another of those nights... first off, it is the final night of Jason Ringenberg's residency at The 5 Spot with tonight's guests Kristi Rose and Fats Kaplin. After that, The Family Wash is hosting a tribute to the late great J.J. Cale that has a cast of performers that is pretty amazing.

And just like that Darrin Bradbury's January Residency at The Basement East is over. And what a residency it was. The four weeks were a showcase for the music and the community of East Nashville, and they clearly demonstrated the role (whether he acknowledges or not) that Darrin has played in building the community. The openers: Jon Latham, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Zach Schmidt, Tim Easton, Megan Palmer, Michaela Anne, Erin Rae, Rorey Carroll, and Steve Poltz (along with the amazing musicians backing them). Guests: Margo Price and Todd Snider. And Darrin and his truly out of this world band (who got better and tighter each week).
Last night.... last night! Erin Rae has an amazing voice... this is country music how it should be done. Steve Poltz (ex of The Rugburns) had some dates cancelled due to the weather (for which I for one am grateful)... I had begun following him on Instagram some time back (I think via a post from Megan Palmer), but this was my first real exposure to his music. The strength of his songs and the power of his presence and energy made me smile and made me want to be a better person. Rorey Carroll writes amazing songs and her cover of a Linda Ronstadt cover backed by Todd Snider on the harmonica was magical.
As of Darrin Bradbury - as I said, the band (Aaron Shafer-Haiss, Cameron Carrus, Megan Palmer, and Larry Walnuts (aka Little Joe from Sturgill Simpson's band) started strong and got better - bringing out new elements in songs that I have heard upwards of fifty or more times over the last couple of years. Last night, they were joined by Jeff Crowe (also from Simpson's band) on keyboards, and it felt like he added a missing piece that was not even missed until it was added.
Lately, this feeling of being in a special place at a special time has been palpable, and last night felt like a perfect microcosm of that feeling. It made me very proud to have been an advocate for Darrin's music for these last couple of years.
Next a shuffle that defies expectations... or whatever...

As Nashville digs out from Snowpocalypse '16 (with temperatures expected to rise to above 50 degrees today), it seems a good time to remind you that tonight is the FINAL NIGHT of the Darrin Bradbury Residency at The Basement East. Roads should be much improved by the time tonight rolls around. If you have made it out to the one or more of the first three weeks, I do not need to tell you.... if you haven't, this is the last chance to experience the magic! Guests tonight are Erin Rae, Rorey Carroll, and Steve Poltz! Doors at 6:00p.m. Music starts at 6:30p.m. Go to the Pub if you need Grub before or after. Do it!

A rare snow day off work, but the shuffle must go on....
Had a blast last night before the winter weather descended... a night at The Family Wash for a pair of CD Release shows by two of my favorite East Nashvillians. Amelia White and The Blue Souvenirs (tonight featuring Sergio Webb, Justin Amaral, Megan Palmer, and Ron Eoff). Amelia's new album is called Home Sweet Hotel. Stone Cupid (Julie Christensen, Sergio Webb, Chris Tench, Bones Hillman, and Steve Latanation). Stone Cupid's new album is called The Cardinal. Amelia and band were wonderful as always, and Julie and Stone Cupid rocked the house.

Let me preface what is likely to be another gushing paragraph or so about what an amazing time it is to be a music fan in Nashville with the following: I write a bunch about Nashville's live music scene because that is where I am and it is what I am experiencing. I do know that there are some amazing pockets of awesome musical stuff happening all over the world. Through writing this blog, I have been fortunate enough to "discover" tons of great music from all over and get a peak into some of these pockets of creativity and collaboration. In that spirit one of my goals for E2TG in 2016 is to forge some partnerships with other writers so that this site can dig deeper into more of the great music happening. Truth be told, I cannot even adequately cover Nashville's music so I would like to also forge some partnerships here in town. I will be posting more as I move forward, but if you read this and have some ideas or interest, please contact me at e2tgmusic@gmail.com. Be sure to put E2TG2016 as part of the subject line to make sure I see it.
For the last three weeks, iconic Nashville musician/singer/songwriter Jason Ringenberg (Jason and the Scorchers, Farmer Jason) has been doing a residency every Wednesday at The 5 Spot. For me this has been a fantastic combination of the music I listened to in my musical formative years and one of my favorite haunts of this later phase of my life. The music has been fantastic, the guests have been spectacular, and there have been wonderful surprises every week. Last night, Jason was joined by Tommy Womack - one of the best this town has to offer. Tommy Womack played some music from his forthcoming new album, some of his timeless classics, and a pretty darn cool Jason and the Scorchers cover. Jason played a great mix of songs from his long history, an awesome Tommy Womack cover, and then the two of them played some songs they wrote together.
If you've missed the first three week, you have one more opportunity to catch Jason at The 5 Spot. Next week, he will be joined by Fats Kaplin and Kristi Rose for what should be a wonderful finale.

So... Nashville had a light layer of ice this morning followed by a dusting of snow. To translate for those of you in colder climates: NASHVILLE WAS HIT BY A MAJOR WINTER STORM TODAY! EVERYONE PANIC NOW!!!!!
So, when I made to the office (where attendance is very light today), my phone decided to turn itself off and back on which means I lost the record of the shuffle. I was able to remember all of the songs - I think, but the order is screwed up... then again, you would never have known that if I had not told you... shoot, I wish there was a way to erase that, but I heard things on the internet cannot be truly erased...
I am getting really excited for tomorrow night. At the Family Wash - dual CD Release shows happening with two of my favorite people here in town. Stone Cupid (Julie Christensen's band) is celebrating the release of The Cardinal and Amelia White is celebrating the release of her new album Home Sweet Hotel. Should be a great time!

Good morning. It was a cold one here in Nashville.
I am back after a day off and still recovering from my 8 Day Birthday Week. I had a total blast, and I am so grateful for everyone who helped me ring in the next 50 years of my life. In all the tally was: 8 Nights, 7 different venues, between 25-30 acts (depends on how you count them), tons of friends seen, and a bunch of fun had.
Since I last reported: Friday night, I visited one of my regular haunts and one of the best weekly events in Nashville - Tim Carroll's Rock and Roll Happy Hour at The 5 Spot. Great time. I was beat after that and I had to call it a night early.
Saturday: The Country on the west side. For the Zachariah Red CD Release show with Jon Latham opening with Neo Tundra Cowboy and Patrick Kinsley and a Fistful of Dollars also on the bill. Great performances all around and a wonderful time to be had.
Sunday: Acme Feed and Seed to see Richie Owens and the Farm Bureau. The band have never sounded better and the atmosphere was pure party - a great way to wrap up the week!
Whew! With the birthday week over, I enjoyed a day off work, did a pilot/audition tape with Sue Havlish for WXNA (Nashville new community radio station). Then, I made my way to The Basement East to catch Megan Palmer, Michaela Anne, and Darrin Bradbury for Week 3 of Darrin's residency! I stuck around to hear Darrin and band kick off the David Bowie tribute in fine fashion. The Basement East was jam packed and the music was kicking, but my 9 nights out caught up with me and I had to bail fairly early.
On to the chilly morning shuffle filled with some classic and newer tunes.

I am desperately in need of a second, third, or fourth wind as my Birthday week rolls on. Last night was so much fun. The newly opened The Pub at The Basement East has it's Grand Opening last night, and as always Grimey and company know how to throw a party better than just about anyone I know. A ton of cool people doing covers... CCR style. I missed a ton of great music socializing and eating and stuff, but what I saw and heard was amazing. Grimey and Friends opened with a set of CCR songs and others followed with covers of bands whose names start with either C or R. Grimey's guests included Bill Eberle and Alanna from Alanna Royale.
The night ended with an out of this world set of Clash and Replacement songs by an ad-hoc band fronted by the legendary Joe Blanton and with the equally legendary Jonathan Bright on guitar. It was a great way to end my birthday rocking out to some of the songs that helped shape my musical tastes.
Tonight: I will somehow suck it up and make two more stops on my birthday week tour. First of all I will be at the Happiest Place on Earth... no not Disney - Tim Carroll's Rock and Roll Happy Hour at The 5 Spot. Next, I will head over to The Basement East for Coverfest. More cool covers from some of Nashville's best.
ICYMI: I posted my review of Zachariah Red's new album, Backbone which was released today.

The backbone is literally part of the skeleton or framework of the body. A carpenter by trade, Zachariah Red, knows about the importance of framework. On his aptly titled new album, Backbone, he frames the album with a solid mix of Midwestern County, heartland rock and roll, and solid songwriting skills that he has sharpened to a fine point during his time in East Nashville.

It's my birthday, and I'll cry if I want to...
My Birthday Week continues. Last night included two stops along the way. Week 2 of the Jason Ringenberg January Jam residency rolled on... This week guest was Peter Cooper with Chuck Mead joining Jason and Peter for a rendition of The Louvin Brothers classic, "The Christian Life". Ringenberg really seems to be enjoying this residency - I know I sure am... Next week's guest is Tommy Womack!
From there, I headed to Mad Donna's Loft where I caught the tail end of Simon Reid's set which sounded great, and then witnessed two rocking sets from the always awesome Renee Wahl (who will be releasing some new music soon!) and Brian Langlinais (who will also be releasing some new music soon!). Both Renee and Brian were backed by top notch bands.
Now the "crying": two late nights in a row has worn me out, but I will press on... tonight, the fine folks at The Basement East were kind enough to schedule the grand opening of their new Pub for my birthday. So, I will be hanging out there this evening. The party begins at 6:00 with some awesome folks doing wicked cool covers beginning at 8:00.

We move on...
Last night was Week 2 of the Darrin Bradbury Residency at The Basement East. It also happened to be Stop 2 of my Birthday Week excursions. A great night of music spent with some amazing friends...
Tim Easton opened the night with a cover of David Bowie's "Five Years" which was really good. He followed with a set of old and new songs some of which featured Megan Palmer on fiddle.
Zach Schmidt backed by Adam Kurtz on pedal steel were next. Zach's song and voice get to me every time.
Darrin Bradbury closed the night with a spirited set that included a new arrangement of his classic song, "Swordfish". He brought out guest Margo Price and Adam Kurtz again for a couple of songs before closing the night with an amazing cover of "Ziggy Stardust".
Tonight: There are two stops on my Birthday tour. First, I will be at The Basement for an industry showcase featuring Sara Syms. From there, I am going to move over to The 5 Spot for $2 Tuesdays - Derek Hoke's weekly extravaganza. This week's lineup includes Ashleigh Flynn and Jon Langford. Langford is best known as a member of the bands The Mekons and The Waco Brothers.

Monday Morning Shuffle - Planet Earth is Blue, and There's Nothing We Can Do Mix

I had just rolled over to try to sleep when my phone buzzed. A bad habit I know, but I looked at it. "David Bowie Dead at 69". And, I thought it was one of those terrible internet hoaxes. I put the phone down - convinced that was the case, but I picked it up again, and I discovered that it was true. I felt numb.
My own exploration of his music was as random - just like all my explorations of music tend to be. I am not even certain where it began or the exact order. I knew David Bowie from MTV - probably before, but MTV opened up several musical doors for me.. say what you will about it. "Ashes to Ashes", "Let's Dance", "China Girl".... Lou Reed was an early influence of mine, and I found out that Bowie has co-produced Transformer - an album that helped transform me. I got a cassette of Hunky Dory and I wore it out. There was a lot I didn't understand about myself. Bowie's music helped. Ziggy Stardust....
I am having hard time really accepting that he is gone, but I am heartened by all of the posts on my Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram feeds - so many vastly divergent musicians and fans sharing many shared experiences some of which echo my own. Music, for me, has been a companion through many lonely times, but it has also been a source of connection with others.

As we must, we press on... My week long Birthday adventures kicked off last night with a couple of cool rounds a Bobby's Idle Hour on Music Row. First, "Earie" award winners Joe Nolan, Drew Kohl, and Andrew Adkins shared a stage, and they all sounded fantastic.
There was a second round, and I had intended to leave, but I ended up staying. Three singer-songwriters that I had not heard before - Kyler Daron, Joey Maloney, and Peter McKeown. Seems an appropriate part of my Birthday Week.
Tonight, the week continues - moving on up to the Eastside for night 2 of Darrin Bradbury's month-long residency at The Basement East. Tonight's guest are Zach Schmidt and Tim Easton - two of East Nashville's finest songwriters. Come on out and hang and listen to cool tunes.

Hey, I needed to get some "stuff done" today, and I decided to shuffle some music while I got the "stuff done". So, welcome to a rare Saturday shuffle. Limited descriptions - just a ton of cool tunes.
As I mentioned yesterday, E2TG's reigning Artist of the Year was selected by Nashville's Lightning 100 to be their Artist of the Week. As part of that, he played a free show yesterday evening at Soulshine Pizza, and he played one of the best shows I have ever seen him put on. I could not have been more proud.

In the wee hours of the morning, I posted my review of "Shoreline Sessions" a new EP and video project from Weapons of Minor Disruption which features Rob from #E2TG favorite The Danbury Lie. Please check it out. It is really cool (that is the short version of my review, btw).
Last night another of those quintessential East Nashville musical happenings. Hanging out in a kind of funky, kind of divey space with awesome people (many of them incredible musicians) listening to top notch music. Last night, it was the East Room with Kent Eugene Goolsby, Lew Card, and Joey Kneiser and the Living Flames.
Tonight, #E2TG Artist of the Year Jon Latham is playing a FREE show at Soulshine Pizza beginning at 7:00. It is a wrap up to his being Local Artist of the Week for Lightning 100.

The Shoreline Sessions is a new EP and mini movie from a new project called, Weapons of Minor Disruption that features the genius mind of Robert Loncto of The Danbury Lie. The project, which releases on January 8, comes on the heels of the full-length DVD Whispers to Oblivion. That project set video of Loncto’s cross-country trip to the music of The Danbury Lie. For The Shoreline Sessions, the films are more experimental and the music is all original.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle - I Forget What Eight Was For Mix

Ah, Thursday!
Last night was the opening night of the Jason Ringenberg residency at The 5 Spot in East Nashville. Ringenberg is the Jason from Jason and the Scorchers (the seminal Nashville band beginning in the early 1980s). He is also the Jason from Farmer Jason (host of a PBS kids show and creator of albums for children). His special guest for week 1 was Webb Wilder (another quintessential figure on the 80s Nashville music scene).
Playing to a pretty packed house, Ringenberg and Wilder really seemed to be enjoying themselves. Jason opened with "Halcyon Times" - the title track from a Scorchers album before turning the stage over to Webb Wilder who moved through a set that encompassed his long career. Including, classic Webb Wilder songs like "How Long Can She Last" and "Human Cannonball".
Ringenberg's set included several classic Scorcher's songs as well as songs from his solo albums, and a cover of "Trail of Tears" by the great Georgia band, Guadalcanal Diary.
Wilder then joined Ringenberg to close out the night by each singing a song by the other. Jason sang, "Sitting Pretty" from 1991's Doo Dad and Webb sang "Shop it Around" from the first full-length Scorchers album Lost and Found. They then performed a Farmer Jason song before closing the evening with a really awesome version of Buddy Holly's "Rave On".
Tonight, I am going to check out Joey Kneiser and his band at The East Room. His new album, The Wildness is getting rave reviews.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle - Frosty Sailor Mix

Today's post will contain no references to Darrin Bradbury, Aaron Lee Tasjan, or Jon Latham. (damn, I just mentioned them...)
Tim Easton is one of East Nashville's most respected songwriters. He is also (my words not his) the spiritual guiding force behind Campfire Propaganda - a loosely connected group of songwriters on the Eastside who feed off of each other creatively.
Over the past several months, Easton has undertaken the daunting task of posting 100 songs in 100 days - as a way to celebrate his 100th published song. He posted his 100th song yesterday, however, one of those songs was a Bob Dylan cover featuring the McCrary Sisters, Megan Palmer, and Aaron Lee Tasjan (damn, I mentioned him again!). All proceeds from that song go to charity.
Because it was Easton's original intention to post 100 original songs, he decided to post song 101. It is called "Sail Away, Sailors". And you can watch it below. According to Tim Easton, "It's the tale of the Alaska youth traveler who gets a job trimming weed then goes to Mexico, then home to Kodiak Island."
Expect one more song tomorrow, called "One for the Ditch" - just because. Tim Easton is currently working on completing his next album. Keep up with Tim Easton by following his Facebook page.
If you are in Nashville next Monday, look for Tim Easton along with Zach Schmidt opening up Week 2 of the Darrin Bradbury Residency. (damn, I mentioned him again, too!)
======================================================================
Oh well, since I mentioned the other two, I should remind you that Jon Latham will do a free show at Soulshine Pizza on Friday to cap off his week as Local Artist of the Week for Lightning 100.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle - Puff Until You Burst Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!
Greetings from Tuesday!
First of all, I have to say how amazingly proud I am of Darrin Bradbury who played the first night of his month-long Monday Residency at the Basement East. I know I may sound like a broken record about this, but even at the end of last year, when I named Darrin my Artist of the Year, the idea of his playing a month-long residency at the largest club in East Nashville would have been almost inconceivable (unless you stopped to consider the trajectory he was on). And yet, here he was playing before a sizable crowd filled with some of the best songwriters and musicians in this town.
I was struck once again by Darrin's skill as a songwriter. Back in November of 2013, when a mutual friend (Popa Tune's) told me that Darrin was moving to Nashville, I checked out his music (I had written about his old band Big Wilson River a year earlier, but did not know much about Darrin's solo stuff). Around the time, I started listening to Darrin's songs, a friend of mine posted something on Facebook about how they don't make songwriters like they used to... or something like that. And, I remember thinking that Darrin may be the best pure songwriter I've heard in a long, long time. And, he has only gotten better since then.
Darrin was backed by the kind of band that may only be possible in East Nashville: Laur Joamets (Little Joe) from Sturgill Simpson's band on guitar, Megan Palmer on fiddle, Cameron Carrus on bass, Aaron Shafer-Haiss on drums.
The always amazing Aaron Lee Tasjan opened the night, playing some new tunes and sounding awesome even when he forget the lyrics to a song and sang it out of order.
2015 E2TG Artist of the Year, Jon Latham played next - confirming the wisdom of my selection. By the way, Jon was just named Local Artist of the Week at Nashville Independent station Lightning 100. His song "Anesthesia" will be in rotation this week and he will play a free show Friday at Soulshine Pizza.
For me (in kind a full circle kind of way), a highlight of the evening was Darrin leading the band through a cover of the Merle Travis song made famous by Johnny Cash, "Nine Pound Hammer". This song had been Darrin's warm-up song for all of those Wednesday night Fran's shows back in the day.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle - Steal Away Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!
Welcome to 2016, #E2TG Style! Well, the "Earies" are over, and no more "Red Cup" songs to be played. We are back to a good old fashioned Morning Music Shuffle...
First a brief recap of the what has transpired since I last posted, and a sneak peak of what is to come.
New Year's Eve Eve - I headed to The Family Wash to see Wild Ponies open for Don Gallardo. It was an amazingly Nashville-typical night of awesome music.
I posted a mega-Video Playlist "Earies" wrap up. New Years Eve, I headed to the legendary Exit/In to ring in the new year - no frill style with some good friends and cool music. Aaron Lee Tasjan and his killer band which included #E2TG Artist of the Year Jon Latham knocked it out of the park (or some other sports metaphor). Chris Knight was awesome, and he really could have cared less about midnight.
New Year's Day was a Friday which meant a trip out to The 5 Spot to ring in 2016 with another outstanding Tim Carroll Rock and Roll Happy Hour.
After that, I kind of dug in and did some writing - the results of which will be out soon.
Tonight! Tonight! The month-long Darrin Bradbury Residency kicks off at The Basement East. The kick off should be out of this world amazing. With 2014 Artist of the Year Bradbury being joined by 2015 Artist of the Year Jon Latham and Artist of the Always Aaron Lee Tasjan. Darrin will be backed by an amazing band. Seriously, this is a "Don't Wanna Miss" event.
Now onto the shuffle...
