Every single day.... every single day for the last almost two years... there is some atrocity, some outrage.... Remember when candidate Trump mocked a reporter with disabilities and it didn't negatively affect his campaign?  Remember when Trump called Mexican immigrants "criminals, drug dealers, and rapists" and his crowds cheered?  Remember when president-elect Trump appointed White Nationalists to high level positions in his administration?  Those of us who called these atrocities out for what they were - were labeled as having "Trump Derangement Syndrome".  Make no mistake, what is happening today is not a coincidence or an accident. The neo-Nazis and White Supremacists and White Nationalists and anti-Semites are being emboldened and encouraged by the White House - and nothing is being done about it. I know that there are reasonable, good people in the Republican Party - at least I have always believed that - but failure of the Republican led Congress to provide checks and balances to the madness that is occurring (EVERY SINGLE DAY) is causing me to doubt this. And I'm not talking about the Flake and Collins and other so-called moderates - who make statements that seem reasonable but then fail to back those statements with any meaningful action.

The fact is, we are a nation without a moral leader. The fact is 60-70 percent of the country does not have a leader and all. And the 29-39 percent who think they have a leader - are lied to daily and are either too willfully ignorant or too blind to see it.  Even if a Blue Wave happens on November 6, our nation is in deep trouble.  If it doesn't happen, I don't know what will happen next, but it will not be good.

My heart goes out to the victims in Kentucky and in Pittsburgh. To those who live in feat because of the color of their skin or because of their religion (or religious or ethnic heritage), or because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. We are in dangerous and unprecedented times. Choose acts of love today. Resist, persist, vote, get others who care about all people to vote...

In the midst of all this, I am in the middle of a move - set for Wednesday and I am listening to music as I pack and prepare. Music is a balm for me. Let's do this Music City Monday shuffle.

First off, I am saddened by the news of the untimely passing of Tony Joe White. I say untimely because at 75, he was still making great music. I am so glad, I had the opportunity to see him last year during Americana Fest. His music will live on. My thoughts are with his family and with those who knew him personally.

This has been a rough week in many respects, and it ends with a dreary day in Nashville. "I believe it's raining all over the world..."  But also, a ray of hope.

Another reminder: If you are eligible and registered to vote, do so - early voting is still going on in many places and Election Day is just days away.  If you are eligible to vote, but did not register, then ask yourself why and think hard about it.  You may feel like your vote doesn't matter, but the fact is- if enough people decide to vote, it can make a difference.

At press time, I am hearing that a suspect in the recent bombings has been apprehended. I am hoping this phase of violence is over, but major changes are needed to stem a dangerous time in our nations history.

It is Friday, and we dive into our "New Music" Playlist once again. As typical for E2TG, we have a pretty wildly diverse set of songs from all over the globe. Sit back and enjoy.

This week, many are learning (hopefully) that rhetoric has consequences and that elections matter.  VOTE if you are tired of so-called leaders who incite violence through their words.

I took an unexpected day off yesterday - so no Wild Wednesday shuffle. I listened to some tunes but didn't get around to posting anything.

So, it's back to the "New Music Playlist" with a couple of first listens and some recent favorites. Let's go!

It is Tuesday. We are marching toward the end of the month and toward election day. I honestly go back and forth between hope and despair. Mostly, I have a great sadness for this divisiveness of these times. This an issue that has been brewing for years, but it has reached critical mass. I think the 24 hour news cycle and social media and extremism are all part and parcel of the problem, but ultimately it is the collective "US" that owns the majority of the responsibility. Collectively, we have the power to reject what is happening.  It is us that fall for the Russian interference that share and post - unreliable "news" stories - that watch highly partisan "news" programs that merely provide confirmation for our beliefs.  It is "US" that disapproves of Congress but keeps re-electing the most egregious members again and again.

The problem is that "We the People" have shirked our responsibilities. Voting rates have been shamefully low, we allow ourselves to be distracted from the things that matter by manufactured divisive "issues" created by special interests who pay off the politicians we keep re-electing.  The problem isn't "conservatives or liberals" - there is room in this country for all sides of the political prism. We don't seek out common ground as a place to begin to hear and see one another.  And neither do our elected officials.

I wish I had solutions and the power to carry out those solutions, but I don't. The fact is, though, no matter the outcome of the mid-term elections (and I know the outcome I want), the fundamental problems of our society will still exist.  And until, we find a way to deal with those issues, our democracy will continue to be in danger.  Practically, I think ending Citizen's United is the most important first step. Then, comprehensive campaign finance reform.

I wish our country had a history of more than two parties. I think the binary notion of beliefs is so limiting for us. Not every one who votes "Blue" or who votes "Red" believes all of the same things. Unfortunately, until changes are made, a third party candidate will only steal votes from the "side" that they most closely fit. A strong left-leaning third party will split the "blue" vote and a strong right-leaning third party will split the "red" vote.  "Blue or Red" should not be the only choices but until something vital changes in our systems, that is the reality.

For the reasons I enumerated yesterday, I plan to vote straight blue. Not because I think the Democrats are perfect or that they 100% represent my values. For the alternative has become toxic. There was a time when I would have considered voting for a moderate right-leaning candidate if the left-leaning candidate was not favorable to me. But, not this time. Not even a slight hesitation.

Music though!  We have a cool, diverse mix of songs to carry us through another day....

Another work week is upon us...

The world seems pretty sucky right now.  Votes are being suppressed and stolen, the free press is under attack, the government is trying to erase trans people.  For god's sake if any of these things bother you, VOTE!  Early voting is going on or starting soon in most places. VOTE early, vote on November 6. VOTE.  If you have the ability, convince other like-minded people to vote, offer to take someone to the polling place.  I am hopeful of a Blue Wave, but fearful that something will stand in the way...  If it doesn't happen, I am truly afraid for what will happen to this nation.

I have been saying for almost two years, I am not someone who wants to get political.  I believe that differing political opinions should be celebrated. I don't believe that what is happening now is political. Children in cages, white supremacists being emboldened, the rule of law being trashed, reporters being targeted and murdered.... These are not things that either conservatives or progressives should support.

God, I need some music now!  Here's a nifty shuffle of artists connected to Nashville, Tennessee.

The other night, I found myself, lamenting my lot in life or at least some aspects of my lot in life. Almost automatically, I started to mentally tick off a list of things that are good about my life. This wasn't always an automatic response. It literally took me years, and it's still not always automatic - but it often kicks in fairly quickly.  In religion, they call it "counting your blessings", in the recovery communities, they call it "a gratitude list". The thing is, more often than not, it works for me.

An aside, I am aware that for some with serious issues of clinical depression or other conditions, the solution is rarely this simple. But, it is one tool (among many) that just may help.

Regardless of all the hard times, bad decisions, pain, and struggles that it took for me to be where I am, the fact is, I am a music fan - who has a choice to go see great live music anytime I want to.  I have a music blog that allows me to meet all sorts of cool people from all over the world.

I also have a radio show that I have been doing for over two years with one of my favorite people in the world (Sue Havlish) on the BEST RADIO STATION in Nashville (as voted by the Readers of the Nashville Scene - for the second year in a row!!!!!!!). That is amazing.

So, while my life is so far from perfect that I can't even imagine what perfect looks like, it is still pretty damn good.

Onward, we move back into the "New Music" playlist.  We have a few "first listens" and overall, a pretty wild and diverse shuffle - so, let's do it!

After a rather dreary week here in Nashville, the sun is actually shining today. So there's that.

There is a lot going on, and as usual, it is music that is pulling me through.  Today is Wednesday - so let's get "Wild"!  This is a shuffle from all the songs saved to my phone memory right now.
