E2TG 11/9/2020 - Music City Monday - Keeping Time Mix (Mark My Word Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

"Our long national nightmare is over..."  There is a huge sense of relief - with an acknowledgement that there is still much work to be done. President-Elect Biden's words of unity are welcome and necessary to begin the healing work ahead. However, with the current president's refusal to concede and the continued destructive rhetoric from his followers and enablers - I am reminded of the song by The Chicks...

That being said, I am most excited about the possibility of politics being something I "keep up with" but not obsess over. And, on that note, let's get to today's music...

But, first - we have some sad news to report- Bones Hillman - best known nationally as the bassist for Midnight Oil for many years - but known here in Nashville for his work with Tim Carroll, Anne McCue,  and Julie Christensen's Stone Cupid - passed away over the weekend after a battle with cancer. Sending love to all who knew him and mostly to his family.

Today, we pick back up with our recap of this week's Featured Friday Playlist with songs 11-16:

11. "Until There's Nothing But Air" by Andrew Leahey & the Homestead
First up today, we have the new single from some E2TG and East Nashville favorites. Another great song from Andrew and the band.
12. "2020" by Son of Bazerk (ft. Michael "Kidd Funkadelic" Hampton)
From our old friends at True Groove record... a new single featuring the hip hop legends Son of Bazerk (Tony Allen aka Son of Bazerk) introduced Chuck D and Flava Flav to each other in the early 80s.  For this timely new single, they are joined by Funkadelic guitarist Michael "Kidd Funkadelic" Hampton.  A hard hitting song for hard hitting times.
13. "Tear It Down" by Amy Ray
Next, we have the brand new single from Amy Ray (1/2 of Indigo Girls). Ray has written a powerful, a soul-searching examination of the racism that reminds deeply rooted in our nation and in our society. It is the same kind of soul searching need by the nation and by many of us who grew up in the South (in particular).
14. "Late Bloom" by Graber Gryass
We have been talking about and featuring Memphis band bluegrass band Graber Gryass for some time - well, their album slipped by me last week - so this week we have the title track. Great stuff.
15. "Straight to Heaven" by F. Scott and the Nighthawks
Next up, we have a fantastic song - the title track from the new EP by Toronto based outlaw band - F. Scott and the Nighthawks. This was my introduction to the band, and I am already hooked.  They have a second EP set for release in 2021 (date TBD).
16. "No Justification" by Loud Apartment
And we close out this segment of music with a track from the second album by this funk fusion band from NYC. The album was produced by the legendary Bill Laswell - who also plays on the album. This is an amazing album - definitely check it out.

E2TG 10/28/2020 - It is Okay - Old Copper Penny Mix (Find the Beauty Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

I'm a little under the (nasty) weather - so apologies for the late and rather minimalistic post...

Our Featured Friday Recap rolls on with songs #21-25...

21. "Chasing Highs" by Griff Clawson
First up, we have the debut single from L.A. based singer/songwriter Griff Clawson - who has contributed vocals to tracks by ARTY, Matoma, Devault, Manilla Killa and Boombox Cartel.
22. "Revolution Son" by Shiva and the Hazards
Next up, we have a really cool single from Australian rock band Shiva and the Hazards.  The song was produced by the band and mixed by Mark Gardener of RIDE. It sounds fantastic.
23. "Are You Listening?" by Lera Lynn
Next, we have a track from the brand new album by Nashville singer-songwriter Lera Lynn. Lynn wrote, performed, produced, and recorded the album on her own. It is appropriately called On My Own.  Check it out. I first became aware of Lera Lynn via the segment she filmed for Songcraft Presents premiere Songs of the Road feature which featured our friend Ben Arthur and which was directed and edited by our friend Matthew Hendershot, and which was directed by Rob Reinhart.
24. "Golden Repair" by Sunstack Jones
Next, we have the title track from the fourth album by UK band Sunstack Jones - this is a gorgeous sounding record. Definitely check it out.
25. "I Never Want To Leave" by The Luxembourg Signal
And we close out this segment of music with the lead track from the third studio album by dreampop/shoegaze supergroup The Luxembourg signal - the band is transatlantic with members calling L.A., San Diego, and London home. A nice way to close this penultimate recap segment of this week's Playlist.

Tomorrow- we wrap up this week's Playlist...

E2TG 8/19/2020 - Setting Course - Holy Mess Mix (72 Oz. Steak Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Whew... this week has been on a fast track for me. I realized that I never wrote my thoughts yesterday and now, I'm not sure what they were.. today, I am thinking about life as a journey and how I tend to be a bit aimless at times. But, I think it is good to have a destination in mind and to start off with a course set- it is just that along the way life happens and your course my change (and that change may be permanent) but that when that change happens it is good to reset your course - even if that means picking a new destination.  I don't think it is good to remain bound by decisions made at an earlier time when a person, their world, the world might have been different.

I am saying this mostly for my self.  I tend to spend too much time overthinking and re-thinking my decisions, and I sometimes ask myself what would 18 year old (or whatever age) Joe think about where I am now, but I am here today to tell myself that that isn't a fair question. 18 year old Joe didn't have the experiences I have, he didn't know the state of the world in 2020 vs. 1984.  The fairer question is what does 54 year old Joe think about where I am in my life, and if he isn't happy with something - what can I do to change it?

Today, we recap four more songs from this week's Featured Friday Playlist: Songs 14-17

14. "What More Could I Say?" by Ivan Moult
Welsh singer-songwriter Ivan Moult just released two new songs - two years after his Longest Shadow LP.  The airy track served as a great introduction of his music to me, and a great addition to our playlist. The other new song is called "Toxic".
15. "As a Matter of Fact" by The Furious Seasons
Next up, we have our first listen to La Fonda - the new album from Los Angeles folk rock trio, The Furious Seasons - led by singer-songwriter David Steinhart. This is a stunning song, and a great reminder of my why I do what I do - this is new-to-me music with decades of experience behind it, and it serves as a reminder of how much great music is left to be "discovered".
16. "Bikers" by Neighborhood Texture Jam
Thanks to a short Playlist this week, I was able to indulge myself and include this track celebrating the release of Funeral Mountain on streaming services. It is the debut album by the incendiary Memphis band - known for having a member dedicated to providing "texture" via 55 gallon oil drums, hubcaps and more. The album was released in 1990, and I can't remember if I had heard of the band during my short time in Memphis or if the cover/title/band name just caught my attention in the record store... but I do know that I was not prepared for what I was to hear. The band had the attitude and energy of punk, but there was so much more going on here. The lyrics were crass, offensive, shocking - at times funny but always dark, and I loved very minute of the album.
17. "Never Die" by Soft Set
I hope the extremely sharp turn didn't give anyone whiplash... we wrap up this segment of music with one side of the new 7" single from this Toronto melodic indie rock duo. The songs were  produced by Mark Gardener of Ride. This is their debut single.
Tomorrow, we wrap up this week's Playlist with songs 18-21....

Music City Monday Morning Shuffle - Choo Choo Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Another work week is upon us.  Monday.

A few interesting events coming up (off the top of my head):  Scott Miller (The V-Roys, etc.) will be making a rare early show appearance in Nashville Wednesday at The 5 Spot.  6:00pm.  Later that night, an all-star cast will be recreating Ryan Adams sixth studio album, Cold Roses - that show is at The Basement East.

Thursday night: Sergio Webb and Nathan Bell will be at The Family Wash at 8:30pm.

There are tons of other great things happening around Nashville every night this week and pretty much every week.  The ones I mentioned just came to my mind.

We call it Music City Monday - because we shuffle up songs from our locally oriented playlist... songs connected to Nashville, Tennessee aka Music City USA.

Here is today's shuffle:

The E2TG 5th Anniversary Extravaganza coming May 18 @ The 5 Spot (East Nashville)

Welcome to the working week....

ICYMI - In just a few short weeks, we will be celebrating the 5th Anniversary of this blog with an amazing night of music and mayhem at The 5 Spot in East Nashville.  Musical performers will include: Julie Christensen, Sergio Webb, and Chris Tench (of Stone Cupid); BARK (2/3 of Tim Lee 3 from Knoxville), Adrian + Meredith, Patrick Kinsley and a Fistful of Dollars, and special guests all the way from Bethany, Connecticut - The Foresters.  Make you plans now to attend!

It is Monday  when we explore songs and artists that are somehow (at least in my mind) connected to THE Music City (aka Nashville, Tennessee).
