E2TG 5/26/2021 - Sometimes you feel like a nut... - Meds Mix (Owl Doom Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

You know the drill - I am running short on time and a ton of music to get to today.. or no further ado...

Featured Friday Playlist recap Part 4 (songs 23-28):

23. "Flute In Da Hood" by Ambulance On Fire
First up, we have the opening track from the debut EP by this Lithuanian alternative electroacoustic folk duo.  A really fascinated release worthy of your attention.
24. "Hole In My Heart" by The Low Countries
Next up, we have the lead track from a new EP from UK band The Low Countries - some really lovely UK folk pop with a murky back story and a great sound.
25. "Mr. Wolf" by Hans Deville (feat. Andrew J. Davis)
Next up, we have the second single from the forthcoming Prophecies of the Lost (due out in August) from the lock-down album of the guitarist of the UK band King Prawn. Great stuff.
26. "Infernal Heads" by CULT OF DOM KELLER
Latest single from the experimental rock group that formed in 2007. With elements of industrial and psych. I dig this.
27. "I Better Run" by Napoleon (feat. Shane Told)
Next up, we have the new single from Toronto based alt-punk band Napoleon.  This track features Shane Told of Silverstein. Fast and noisy just the way I like it.
28. "Moebius" by Trio Nilo
And, we close out this section of music with a new single from this Spanish progressive jazz - a wonderful instrumental track and a great way to take us out of the playlist for today.

E2TG 5/7/2021 - Featured Friday - Pizza & Drugs Mix (Take Good Care Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

A busy week for new music, and that means a jam packed Featured Friday Playlist.  If you want, you can check out the whole list which is embedded just below or you can follow along all week as I recap the list in five segments.  Part 1 is down below the jump covering the first 15 songs.

It is also a good time to tell you that much of the music featured here is available on Bandcamp and that today Bandcamp is waiving revenue sharing to put more of the proceeds of purchases directly in the hands of the artists you and I love.  If you love independent music like I do, support the artists in the most direct way you are able. Bandcamp is one of the better avenues.

E2TG 8/19/2020 - Setting Course - Holy Mess Mix (72 Oz. Steak Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Whew... this week has been on a fast track for me. I realized that I never wrote my thoughts yesterday and now, I'm not sure what they were.. today, I am thinking about life as a journey and how I tend to be a bit aimless at times. But, I think it is good to have a destination in mind and to start off with a course set- it is just that along the way life happens and your course my change (and that change may be permanent) but that when that change happens it is good to reset your course - even if that means picking a new destination.  I don't think it is good to remain bound by decisions made at an earlier time when a person, their world, the world might have been different.

I am saying this mostly for my self.  I tend to spend too much time overthinking and re-thinking my decisions, and I sometimes ask myself what would 18 year old (or whatever age) Joe think about where I am now, but I am here today to tell myself that that isn't a fair question. 18 year old Joe didn't have the experiences I have, he didn't know the state of the world in 2020 vs. 1984.  The fairer question is what does 54 year old Joe think about where I am in my life, and if he isn't happy with something - what can I do to change it?

Today, we recap four more songs from this week's Featured Friday Playlist: Songs 14-17

14. "What More Could I Say?" by Ivan Moult
Welsh singer-songwriter Ivan Moult just released two new songs - two years after his Longest Shadow LP.  The airy track served as a great introduction of his music to me, and a great addition to our playlist. The other new song is called "Toxic".
15. "As a Matter of Fact" by The Furious Seasons
Next up, we have our first listen to La Fonda - the new album from Los Angeles folk rock trio, The Furious Seasons - led by singer-songwriter David Steinhart. This is a stunning song, and a great reminder of my why I do what I do - this is new-to-me music with decades of experience behind it, and it serves as a reminder of how much great music is left to be "discovered".
16. "Bikers" by Neighborhood Texture Jam
Thanks to a short Playlist this week, I was able to indulge myself and include this track celebrating the release of Funeral Mountain on streaming services. It is the debut album by the incendiary Memphis band - known for having a member dedicated to providing "texture" via 55 gallon oil drums, hubcaps and more. The album was released in 1990, and I can't remember if I had heard of the band during my short time in Memphis or if the cover/title/band name just caught my attention in the record store... but I do know that I was not prepared for what I was to hear. The band had the attitude and energy of punk, but there was so much more going on here. The lyrics were crass, offensive, shocking - at times funny but always dark, and I loved very minute of the album.
17. "Never Die" by Soft Set
I hope the extremely sharp turn didn't give anyone whiplash... we wrap up this segment of music with one side of the new 7" single from this Toronto melodic indie rock duo. The songs were  produced by Mark Gardener of Ride. This is their debut single.
Tomorrow, we wrap up this week's Playlist with songs 18-21....

Trending Tuesday Morning Shuffle - Taken Away Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

E2TG's connection to Darrin Bradbury goes back to 2012 when his old band Big Wilson River was a "Featured Artist". What I didn't know is that the band was in their final days, and I never really connected with them - although I had several mutual friends.  Fast forward to late 2013 when one of those mutual friends Papa Tunes (who was a vital part of the early days of E2TG) sent me a message that Darrin was moving to Nashville and that I should keep an eye out for him. I immediately went out and found some music he had out on Bandcamp - mainly a collection of demos called The Almost Great Crepes. I was utterly blown away by his songwriting.

Darrin moved to Nashville with bassist Cameron Carrus (Buck N Stuff, Tim Carroll, Nikki Bluhm etc) and lived for a time in a car in the parking lot of a Wal Mart. He also started playing every open mic in town and meeting fellow musicians and songwriters.

Early 2014, Darrin went out on an extended tour and my life kind of fell apart.  Meanwhile, his songs started showing up in my shuffle - like every day.  Finally, in the Spring of 2014, I met Darrin in person.  In the Fall of 2014, I followed Darrin to open mics of every kind imaginable. Through him, I met a bunch of people. I began to dig myself out of a personal hole and E2TG was revitalized.

We had a lot of late night, early morning conversations when he was working the back door at The 5 Spot.

Last night, on my birthday - no less - I learned (officially) that Darrin had signed to ANTI- Records out of L.A. - the home of Tom Waits, Mavis Staples, Wilco, and so many more. I could not be more proud of him. I claim no part in his success, but I am grateful to have been along for what has been an incredible journey.

As is always the case, the road ahead is filled with unknowns, but I will happily follow along and see where and how it goes.

I need to add - there is no formula for success and I do not consider myself to have any particular skill in assessing who will or will not be a "success" (whatever that term means). I simply write about music I like and love. In the 7 and a half years of E2TG, I have written about artists/bands who I thought were incredible who are now no longer making music. I knew Darrin Bradbury was something special, but I didn't know if anyone else would ever see and know that. I am happy that it appears that some have.

Back to the here and now.   I am super-stoked about the variety and quality of the music in my new "Trending" playlist.  It's Tuesday - so let's shuffle!
