E2TG 4/15/2021 - What to Put in this Spot - Tricky Love Mix (Therapy Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

My thoughts today are about the return to "normalcy".  I am happy to have received both doses of the vaccine and I hope more people will reach that stage.  I got to see live in-person, inside music for the first time on Sunday, but to me this is not yet a return to an old normal and to be honest, in some ways, that old normal is not coming back - which is okay - I look forward some new normal but I don't think we are there yet either. This current normal is something that I will have to adapt to I guess. For me, going out to see live music (usually in a smaller venue) was often a spontaneous thing, and I usually went out alone and then always met up with friends.   The current normal seems to demand more planning and in some cases buying "pods" of four seats.  For some, this works really well... for me, again, it will be an adjustment.

I also have a form a social anxiety which is kicked into high gear what with being away from going out for over a year, the new rules etc. This is something I will have to overcome in order for me to exist in this new normal.

I was not someone who often went to large gathering type events, so changes there will not affect me.

My night out Sunday went well - not much advance planning - I think several people were feeling our way around new expectations which helped with my anxiety. I felt more prone to stay rooted in one spot than I used to....

I always need to acknowledge that some people are not yet ready to go out like I did and some are way ahead of me on that. My general feeling is that the only people who are 100% certain of anything these days are the people who are clearly wrong. The rest of us are trying to do right, feeling our way through, and hoping for grace.

And just like that it is time to wrap up this week's Featured Friday Playlist.  As always, we save some cool music to finish off the week (songs 28-32):

28. "Time Crystals" by Coyote Man
First up, we have a recent single from this Chicago-based progressive instrumental band. Cool stuff.
29. "Noah Mount" by Ben Conley

Next up, we have a bluesy new single from this L.A. based artist. This is my first exposure to his music, and I like it.
30. "Nosebleed" by ZOLA
Next, we have the first single following a year-long hiatus from San Francisco-based singer-songwriter ZOLA whose indie-pop music often combines French and English lyrics. A great sound on this track.
31. "HEADLIGHTS" by Sleep Nation
Keeping stateside for one more track, we have the new single from this alternative rock band from right here in Nashville. The powerhouse bluesy song's story is a modernized version of Wayne Cochran's 1961 song "Last Kiss" which was covered in more recent times by Pearl Jam.
 32. "U Can't Hide" by RUMBLE (feat. Blackout Ja)

And we close things out today and for this week's playlist with our second time featuring the Chinese Man Records artists RUMBLE - who also closed out a playlist last November.  Here they are joined by reggae dancehall legend Blackout Ja.

E2TG 3/30/2021 - Inward Gaze - Cinnamon Mix (Behave Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

One thing occurred me - thinking back on yesterday's post. Thinking about the immensity of the issues faces the world and the country and the state and the city... is that the best place to start making changes is with ourselves.  One thing I learned in a previous part of my life is that if something is bothering your about someone else's behavior is to look at where you may have a similar behavior in your own life. It isn't always easy - because your own behavior may be quiet different but often if you take the time and make the effort to look - you will something somehow related to that bothersome behavior that you can work on in yourself. And that is often more productive since it is next to impossible to change other people's behavior.

Today - we move on in our Featured Friday recap - with songs 18-23:

18. "Looking Through the Glass" by Kieran Mercer
First up, we have the new single single from Canadian singer-songwriter Kieran Mercer - who released his debut EP in 2016.  This is his first independent release.
19. "Noyalain (Burn)" by Lisa Gerard; Jules Maxwell
Next up, we have the first single from the forthcoming (May 7) album Burn. Lisa Gerrard  is a founding member of the band Dead Can Dance.
20. "I Wanna Be a Teenage Boy" by Zoe FitzGerald Carter
Next up, we have a new track from this Bay area songwriter and memorist. This song (from the forthcoming album Waterlines) manages to be fun and intriguing, and it is worth a close listen.
21. "The City's Coming Down" by The New Ravis
Next up, we have a song born out of the mental health strain of the last year - from this indie duo from Galway. Really strong addition to the playlist.
22. "Collide (Bury My Heart)" by Golden Streets of Paradise
Next up, we have the lead track from the new 3 song mini-EP from this Cleveland, Ohio duo.  Really digging this.
23. "Taming Monsters" by Stefan Prigmore
And, we close with a powerful track from the full length debut album by this Texas singer-songwriter. An excellent album - check it out.

    Featured Friday Playlist
(Last day to check out this week's playlist.  The list will refresh tomorrow)

Thursday Shuffle:

A mixed bag today - with some local favorites - some E2TG faves from years past - and a classic tune from my youth.

"Morse Code" by Tape Deck Mountain (from 21st Century Loosers: The Best of 2009-2019)

"Prove My Love" by Violent Femmes (from Violent Femmes)

Thanks to Blister in the Sun this debut album the album went platinum and finally hit the Billboard charts in 1991 - 9 years after its release. But, in my hometown and the time, only a few of us knew about it and it hit me hard - putting words and music to the raging storm of emotions and chemicals going on in my adolescent brain and body.

"Something Else" by Candy Apple and The Buddies (from Leprechaun to the Right)

Candy Apple and The Buddies (aka The Buddies) were/are a group featuring members of Smoking Flowers, Justin and the Cosmics, Pale Blue Dot, Welcome to Ashley, and Black Vincent. Here they are doing the Eddie Cochran song.

"Almost Gone" by Joe Goodkin (from Paper Arrows)
"Pretty Awful" by Magnapop (from The Circle is Round)
"It's a Shame" by Bonsai Universe (from Too Many Ghosts)

Three songs from 2019 releases - all very different.

"Whiskey Lie" by Andrea Stray (from Vacancy)

A 2010 release from Nashville/Los Angeles singer-songwriter Andrea Stray.

"You Bring The Class" by The Deadline Shakes (from Zealots)

"It's So Funny" by Dylan Rodrique (from Cat's Game)

"World's Smallest Confederate Veteran" by Luke Powers (from Hwy 100)

A wonderful song from songwriter and poet Luke Powers. I had the pleasure of performing on a spoken word night with him, the late David Olney, Rod Picott, and Rebecca Weiner Tompkins.

"Honey and Sugar" by Lori Kelley (from Under Stars and Storms)

Lori Kelley is a D.C. area transplant, but she has been here several years now. We was among the first group of people I met when I kind of emerged from the shadows into the Nashville music scene. She was a big part of the wonderful Sunday night shows at Bobby's Idle Hour (Eastside Invasion). She is a wonderful songwriter, and this is her most recent release.

E2TG 2019 Recap - Part 2 - Last Supper Mix (Drunk Firefly Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Looking into the 2020, I want E2TG to better reflect the things happening around music that I find notable and interesting, and I want to be more responsive to submissions that fall outside of the shuffle concept.  Although the shuffle has served me well, at times, I will get a single that I am really interested in writing about but it may take a long time for that one song to come up in a shuffle.

At the same time, it has become necessary to redistribute how I use my time and it is also time for me to look into forging some partnerships to provide more content (dare I use that word?) for the site. That is where I feel I being led as we begin the 10th year of E2TG. I am excited, and I hope you will join me on this new adventure.

First, though, we need to wrap up 2019 and we are doing so by revisiting some of the great music we featured during the year. Today's shuffle overall has a more experimental/alternative feel to it. Let's dig in!

Trending Tuesday Morning Shuffle - The Slouch Mix (Little Rabbit Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

*Note: The video playlist at the bottom of the post attempts to closely approximate the shuffle I listened to on my way to work this morning. When a video for a song was not available, I substituted another song by the same artist. When I could not find any videos by an artist, I included a related video or did not include a video for that track. This blog may reference unreleased tracks, however, no unreleased music is ever included.

Honestly, just trying to make it through this short work week... I might make it - still up in the air...

Let's get to some fine, fine Trending Tuesday music -

This is my last day to remind you to make a donation to the WXNA Pledge Drive, but the drive runs through Sunday.

Time is marching on, and I am getting ready for a soft launch of E2TG version 3.0 soon.  I am going to make some decisions over the weekend about the timing of the changes.  December is historically the month we review the year that is winding down - which we do in the context of our annual awards - The Earies (tagline: They sound odd, but they really aren't)

Let's jump into this shuffle!
