E2TG 7/14/2021 - Half Birthday - Transparent Mix (Parades Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

It's my half-birthday!  Also, I am short on time- so my shuffle descripts might be minimal. Sorry.

Featured Friday Playlist recap (part 4) (songs 24-28):

24. "Nightfall" by Sophie Janna
First up today, we have a beautiful new single from this singer-songwriter based in Amsterdam.  It is the second single from the forthcoming World Wide EP - which is her first EP of original music.
25. "Ma Gnossienne" by Kety Fusco
Next up, we have a truly original work from an Italian-Swiss harpist and composer based in Switzerland. It is a reinvention of a 19th century work by the French composer Erik Satie. This new piece features the harp played in most unconventional ways. Wonderful.
26. "Sunshine" by Pablo Infernal
Next up, we have the second single of 2021 from this four-piece band from Zurich. The band members bring in Swiss, Albanian, Brazilian, and Italian heritage into this unique rock sound.
27. "Palm" by Lesser Care
Next up, we have a post-punk shoegaze band from El Paso Texas - with a double 7" inch single released ahead of their debut album which is being finalized as I write this.
28. "Sweet Company" by His His
And we close this segment of music with a track from the debut EP by Toronto based artist Aidan Belo - who records as His His. A great track to take us out of our recap today...

Wild Wednesday Morning Shuffle - She Wants Something Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

All of this happened a long time ago when the world was a very different place. Of course, none of us knew that at the time.
(From The Drift - A Novel by Joe Wolfe-Mazeres) Available at Amazon.com (Kindle edition also available)

I am continuing to work on my Spotify playlists for E2TG.  So far, I have completed three - January - March 2018.  These are meant to be a cross-section of music I featured during those months - not necessarily music released in those months.   If you are interested, you can check out the playlists (links below)  and follow my personal profile to find out when new playlists are created.

E2TG January 2018
E2TG February 2018
E2TG March 2018

I am not someone who complains (publicly) (too much) when things are not going well in my life, and I am also not someone who likes to talk about it when things seem to be going well. Maybe that is because those two extremes often seem to come within minutes of each other. It's usually not very extreme - there are things that help with this - but anyway.... what was my point? Oh- this week has been interesting.  Parts have been challenging... but I have really enjoying catching up with some people I haven't had the chance to in a while, and I have enjoyed meeting new people.  And hearing some great music.  Tomorrow night is going to be one of those nights when I wish I could be in at least three places at the same time.

Oh and I go to the dentist this afternoon.  The last time I went there, I was there seven and half hours.  Hopefully, I will not be there until midnight tonight....

It is mid-week - a time when we get "wild" at E2TG and shuffle up all of the music saved to my phone. Let's do it!

Wild Wednesday Morning Shuffle - Super Awkward Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Had a good night out seeing live music last night.  Starting at The Local to see a Ben de la Cour plus a wonderful set from the legendary Jon Dee Graham. I picked up a copy of Graham's CD Knoxville Skyline which features E2TG favorites Tim and Susan Bauer Lee.

After that, I headed to $2 Tuesday at The 5 Spot. I usual, I stayed up too late and had a very good time. Also as usual, I saw some great bands.  First up was Nashville band Volk - that I saw for the first time and really enjoyed.  Next was E2TG favorite Andrew Adkins with a superb band. As always it was a treat.  Next was Derek Hoke playing as a trio with Mark Robertson of the Legendary Shakeshakers and great Nashville drummer Steve Latanation (formerly of the band Agent Orange). One of my favorite local songwriters, Chris Moyse, closed the night with a band that featured Sean Quinn and Erin Nelson of Nelson, Zimmerman, and Quinn.

So, I guess it's Happy Valentine's Day or Singles Awareness Day, if you prefer, or Happy Wednesday, if you prefer that.  It is Wednesday, and every Wednesday, things get a little wilder than usual here at E2TG. We call it Wild Wednesday, and it is the day we shuffle up all the songs currently saved to my phone and see what comes up.

Only six songs in today's shuffle... the last track is over 9 minutes long. Let's shuffle!

Theme Thursday Morning Shuffle - Just a Shot Away Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Okay - today I am mostly going to let my shuffle speak for itself... but I was thinking last night about something I wrote yesterday and something I've heard repeated,,, for many of us, as we observe what is happening in the world - in Washington. As we are horrified and angry and yes at times amused (Bowling Green Massacre), we are left to the great mystery - why are there still people supporting this administration.  Or more importantly, why/how are there people who actually think it is going well. The conclusion I came to is two-fold. First of all, they are seeing the world through a filter that makes things look very different than what I am seeing. Am I also looking at the world through a filter? Sure, I imagine we are to a certain extent. But, in most cases, that filter has limits.  In most cases, it is possible to find some common ground of agreement - but in recent times - and this did not start by any means with the election of the current President - that ability to find any common ground has seemed elusive. So, whereas I  may view a speech or a talk show appearance or a tweet - as dangerous or delusional or dishonest, someone viewing through a different filter - may see it as brave or refreshing or brutally honest.

The second thing is the proliferation of extremist propaganda outlets disguised as news sources. There is a meme going around that attempts to provide guidance in this area, and although some may argue with the placement of certain outlets on that chart, the basic premise is pretty hard to dismiss. Add to that the logarithms employed by sites like Facebook but make it less likely that you will see posts that go against your worldview. To my friends on the left (and this is to me as well), maybe - just maybe - I should read some of those far right sites - just to understand what kinds of information is being fed to those friends of ours who still support this President. Not to forgive or excuse or justify - just to try to gain some understanding...

Then, we need to find away to fight back against extremist of all kinds and shapes and the powers that shape and control those extremists...

Moving on... Had a blast at the first ever WXNA night at Kay Bob's Grill and Ale last night.  They are doing this every third Wednesday. From 5-11pm a percentage of sales goes to WXNA!

ICYMI - My review of the new album from Sean Quinn and the Tremblers was posted this morning. You can read it HERE.

Now for Theme Thursday,.... usual disclaimers apply - just songs that loosely fit a predetermined theme (unexplained). Some times - the connection is just a title that makes me think of something that fits the theme.  Also, I do not mean to ascribe any motives political or otherwise to any of the artists/songs

Throwback Thursday Morning Shuffle - Stagger Lee Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

And just like that, it is Thursday. Last night, an excellent early show at The 5 Spot. With local band, Harpooner. Why oh why am I just "discovering" this band now?  They were awesome. Followed by the always amazing Allen Thompson Band with lots of special guests.  A really fine early evening of music.  Later, I was at WXNA for the Pledge Drive - hanging out with Kon for Freaking Out the Squares.  Austin from Sound, Mind, and Proxy was hanging out, too.  Remember, if you love what WXNA has done for Nashville over the past six months, now is a good time to show your appreciation by making a one-time or recurring donation to keep us going.  615-933-9962 or on-line at WXNAFM.ORG.

Tonight, E2TG Artist of the Year 2015, Jon Latham will be opening up for Bobby Bare Jr.. Harrison Whitford is also on the bill. This is at The Basement East.  Get there!

Okay, it is Thursday when we normally throw it back.  I still haven't gotten around to creating a throwback playlist, so today, I am shuffling songs from the built-in Recently Added playlist.  Throwing back to the days before I had playlists at E2TG.  I have to keep it short and to the point today.

Wild Wednesday Morning Shuffle - No More Drama Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Robyn Hitchcock and Bobby Bare Jr. walk into a bar, and the best damned Booker T and the MGs cover band you ever heard is on stage... what? No, it's not the set up for a joke... it is just Tuesday night in East Nashville. Specifically $2 Tuesday at The 5 Spot.  As per usual, it was a great night of music up and down the bill that included Henry Wagons, Allen Thompson (who filled in for Derek Hoke who is on tour), Francis and the Foundation, Amber Farris with the late night slot filled by the the aforementioned Booker T cover band - Time is Tight lead by drummer Jerry Pendecost. $2 admission, $2 Yazoo drafts all night!

Oh and a big shout out to Eric who hosts Gilded Splinters on WXNA.  He plays really awesome New Orleans music every Tuesday from 7-9pm.  Eric filled in for Sue and I this past Saturday and he kind of dedicated his show to us by making musical connections. I don't know if they were aided by cocktails, but if so, I am assuming it was Hurricanes.  (but not on the air on in the studio...) :-)

It is mid-week... when things get wild here at E2TG. Let's see where the shuffle takes us...

Wild Wednesday Morning Shuffle - Left Hand Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Had a blast last night at The Family Wash for Cole Slivka's Short Sets.  Tim McNary was awesome with Sean Quinn backing him.  Really dug, Cole Slivka who had the ever talented Dave Coleman on guitar (bonus - news of a new album from The Coalmen), and Brooklyn band Leland Sundries did not disappoint.

It is just a fact that on any given night - pretty much every given night, there is a ton of great live music going on all over Nashville.  It is a great problem to have, but it can be problematic. The Nashville Dilemma - I call it. For listeners/fans/supporters, it means making difficult decisions about which worthwhile/awesome shows to miss  (both because a conflicting show or because sometimes you just need to stay in).  For artists, it means that you are indirectly  competing for an audience with your friends - even if you don't see music as a competition.

All that to say, there is a shit-ton of awesome music going on in Nashville tonight. Get out and see something!  (by the way, shit-ton is a technical music-blogger term).

Speaking of a shit-ton... we have 12 (tracks) in the shuffle today (and I do not use the term song for good reason)...  It is Wild Wednesday - let's get WILD!

Wild Wednesday Morning Shuffle - Text You if It's Unclear Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Sometimes, it is nice just to hang out with friends and just half listen to some really cool music while catching up with people (on the back porch not talking over the bands). $2 Tuesdays is my favorite time to do that. Heard Jennifer Nicely who was awesome, and a band from Dallas called Dead Flowers who covered The Replacements "Bastards of Young" and "Takin' a Ride" and whose original songs sounded as if they could fit on a Replacements record.  There was other cool music, but like I said, I was needing to catch up with people.

As I have previously announced, my radio show with Sue Havlish debuts on Saturday, and thanks to Sue, there is now a Facebook event for the debut.  We hope you will tune in.

We have reached the mid point of the work week... as we do every Wednesday, we shuffle songs from the Wild Wednesday playlist which basically includes things that do or do not fit the other playlists.  Wildness to follow!
