E2TG 2/28/2020 Part 2 - Ingenue - Featured Friday - Flowers Dead Mix (Bloodless Husk Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

In case you missed it, we premiered the new song and video from Brett Ryan Stewart earlier this morning.  You can check it out HERE!

Today is release day for several albums, EPs, and singles.  (Check out the Release listing below).  On of the new album releases that I have been anticipating for several months is Ingenue by Kristen Englenz.  We have already had the chance to listen to a few singles, but now the whole album is out in the world.  In addition to be being a phenomenal songwriter and singer, Kristen is one of my favorite human beings - which makes me doubly happy for her to have this album out.

Long time readers, will recall that E2TG first connected with Englenz back in 2017 when she played our residency - as a guest of Jon Latham (who ended up hospitalized and unable to play), I became a fan that night, and it has been a joy to see her growth in the nearly 3 years since.  Check out Ingenue wherever you listen to music, and more importantly, if you dig it, buy it!

Kristen Englenz also kicks off the newly updated Featured Friday playlist! Also on the playlist: that new song from Brett Ryan Stewart that we premiered this morning, plus new music from Katie Pruitt, Harry Stafford, Close Lobsters, Little Triggers, Thomas Passon, Stumbleine, FM Thread, Jeffrey James, Jesse Blake Rundle, Sluka, Gallary 47. The No Ones, Charmless i, and The Heliocentric.

Check out the playlist below, and please follow our Featured Friday Playlist. A new list is posted every Friday.

As always, we remind you to buy CDs and LPs, see your favorite band live, buy merch, etc.

Following/Saving/Downloading on Spotify is not equal to owning the music (CD, Vinyl, or download)

E2TG 2/28/2020 Part 1 - Single and Video Premiere

I first met Brett Ryan Stewart through the incomparable Reckless Johnny Wales and Denise Fussell.  I feel like they made a point of making sure I met Brett. It was at Bobby's Idle Hour - maybe a David Olney show, but I don't know. The thing is, if you know Reckless and Denise, you know that if they want you to know someone then it is someone you should know.

I will be honest, it took a little while to figure Brett Ryan Stewart out - okay, maybe I will never figure him out- anyway, it took me a little while to figure out what he did. I gathered that he did music production, and I got the vague sense that maybe he played music, but that was easy - this is Nashville and everyone except me plays music.

The thing is, right from the start, I knew I liked him, and in the back of my mind was the nagging voice (Reckless and Denise wanted you to know him for a reason).

Turns out my confusion was not unfounded. In the years since I met him, Stewart has been through some changes and challenges. For one, he started Wirebird Productions. (You can read all about it below in the press release).

When I finally heard Brett's music, a light bulb went off, and I suddenly understood exactly why I was led to meet him. First of all,he is a great songwriter. More specifically, he manages to deliver heartfelt truths in an original way.  I love this new song, and I hope you will, too.  Read about it below, and then check out the wonderful video (made by the awesome Duende Vision team).

Random Note from Across the Universe:

Today's Greetings from Nashville is streaming at wxnafm.org.  Here is the direct link to the show.

Tomorrow is New Release Friday.  I am very excited that Kristen Englenz's new album Ingenue is being released!

Also, be on the look out, we will be premiering a new single and video from Brett Ryan Stewart.

As usual, lots of great live music in Nashville tonight. I wish I could do it all.  It is the last night of the Nick Nace Residency at Tennessee Brew Works. The last night of the Anana Kaye and Irakli Gabriel Residency at Bowery Vault, and the first (second?) ever show by Dirt Reynolds (Chris Watts, Ryan Dishen, Jason Paradise, Drew Kohl) at The 5 Spot with Matt Woods and 2018 E2TG Band of the Year The Big Dumb!

E2TG 2-26-2020 - GFN #3 - More - Pearly Gates Mix (Coney Island High Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Greetings from Nashville Episode 3:

The third edition of my new WXNA show, Greetings from Nashville will hit the airwaves at 6am tomorrow morning.  I hope you will tune in to 101.5FM if you are in Nashville proper, or wxnafm.org wherever you are.  If you won't be awake between 6 and 7, you can catch the show on our archive.  Episodes 1 and 2 are up now, Ep. 3 will be up shortly after the live broadcast ends.
I have a good show lined up - with darker, more noisy tracks to start the show (from today back to the mid 1980s) - segueing into some more songwritery music and more.  I am continuing to feature some of my favorite local music.
If you have an independent Nashville band from say 1980 to now, that you think I need to cover, e-mail me at gfnonwxna@gmail.com.

More:
  • Meanwhile, the next Double Shot falls on Leap Day, February 29, and in that spirit, we are playing songs about leaping, jumping, hopping etc.
  • Piggy-backing on some of my recent writing, I have been focusing my thoughts on what is important. It is sometimes easy to say what is important, but then, the way one spends ones time and money tells a different story.  As we, the collective "we", are being pulled in so many different direction, and as there are voices (internal or external) which try to dictate our priorities. I am reminded to follow that still, small voice which provides a true north.  For me, that north includes creative discovery and cultivating new friendships.
Anyway, onward!

E2TG 2/25/2020 - Mardi Gras - Boy Sit Down Mix (Hey You Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday, Lent, and all that....

Growing up Catholic, I remember the big deal of deciding what to "give up" for Lent. You wanted to pick something hard, but not too hard to give up for 40 days. It seemed like it was generally something not so good for you - like sodas or chocolate. I also remembered the debates - so Lent represents the 40 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday, but it is only technically 40 days if Sunday's are excluded, and if Sundays are excluded that meant you could partake in our chosen sacrifice on the Sundays in Lent. It seemed like it was always our Protestant friends who scoffed at this "loophole".
But, in my (albeit) limited understanding - the sacrifice - and indeed any fasting - is supposed to serve a spiritual purpose - to clear away things that keep you from focusing on what is important. And I do think such time is vital and sadly often neglected (present company definitely not excepted). Whether the thing you are focused on is the pending death and resurrection of a savior or something else, I am of a mind that there has to be more meaning to this life than just base survival and the quest for material comforts.
So, I am not sure that I am going to "give up" anything this Lenten period - except maybe negativity or something like that, but I do hope to spend this time reflecting on what is important to me. As for how any of this relates to E2TG, well, E2TG is important to me and music is important to me. I guess I want to reflect on how I can best reflect those loves in how I conduct myself through this blog every day.

Pre-Lent Thoughts:

Yesterday, after work, I was listening to some music from my phone - and the thought occurred to me that I really want E2TG to be more spontaneous and natural. I don't yet know what that means or what it looks like, but I will let you know.  Nevertheless, I heard a track from Hey Tom - the Tom House Tribute album by Brock Zeman, and I was reminded of what an amazing album it is and what a wonderful songwriter Tom House is.  I also heard a track from the forthcoming Chris Moyse album - which is fantastic, and I was struck about the amazing work being done by so many of my friends.

E2TG 2/24/2020 - Music City Monday - Seen It All Mix (Foreign Thing Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

We are back!  If you haven't had a chance to do so, please check out this week's Featured Friday Playlist on Spotify.  Thanks to everyone who has followed the Playlist so far.  Please give it a follow, if you are so inclined.

Also, be sure to check out the recent and upcoming releases at the bottom of every daily post. I have been a little slow getting additional information up, but there is a ton of great music being released.

The Featured Friday Playlist and the New Release Listing are my primary methods of highlighting new music.

In the past, the daily shuffle was used for this purpose.  The morning shuffle has gone back to its original intent - an eclectic mix of old and new music - just a daily dose of what I listen to on my way to work each day.

E2TG 2/20/2020 - Art for Art's Sake - City of Immigrants Mix (Showboat Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Art for Art's Sake:

I have a bad tendency to put things in a box - and consider it bad or good - when in reality things are almost always more nuanced and complicated.
Last night, I attended a book signing for John Partipilo's new book Rancho Beyondo - his second book.  John is a true visionary artist and journalist (the two don't have to be mutually exclusive).  John and the book's designer Beth Inglish talked a bit about John's artistry, and the point was made (and taken - by me at least) of the importance to staying true to your vision as an artist.  We are all given many chances to compromise our vision. Advise from well-meaning friends and family, unappointed  arbiters of societal norms and literary (or other conventions).
(I need to point out that I am expounding on the words that were spoken - offering my own thoughts - not implying that either John or Beth said these specific things - just that their comments led my mind down these paths).  As an artist (of whatever medium) my job is not to help people remain comfortable.  I think the Cesar Cruz quote: "Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable".  John's photographs are not staged and although he does sometimes photograph musicians, he does not usually capture them on stage but rather in quiet moments.
So, the event last night was at a boutique hotel in East Nashville. This location was the inspiration for my first sentence. From the outside, I probably would consider this spot - fancy, expensive cocktails, pricey rooms (only eight total rooms) - to be part of the problem with all of the changes. But, it was a lovely event and the expensive cocktail I had was delightful. And the hotel seems really interesting (out of my price range but interesting).  John Partipilo in discussing his book - which contains images of ordinary and extraordinary people and situations.
John said that he loves Nashville and reflected on his responsibility to report everything he sees. It struck me, because it is so easy to reflect on all the changes and just to see the negatives or just bemoan the losses. Through John's lens, it is possible to see the glorious shades of grey (literal and figurative) that as a whole create the Nashville of 2020.
The crowd that gathered included some heavy-hitters from all walks of Nashville life, and also some of the people who appeared in the book (in some case both in one person).
I kind of got side-tracked from my thoughts about art. The line between art and commerce are sometimes razor thin (or at least seem to be). I know, I see musicians struggling with making the art they want vs. trying to make some sort of viable living doing what they love and often what they are best suited to do. It is easy to sit on the outside and say, "always keep art pure, stick to your vision, don't compromise", but it isn't that simple and it is not fair to put that simplification on others.  I do know, however, that the pure pursuit of art (or as pure as possible) is important and needed in the world.  I guess I don't have an answer, but I am grateful for this book signing in a fancy, boutique hotel with delicious, expensive cocktails for triggering all of these thoughts in my head.

Final day to check out this week's list

Thursday Morning Shuffle:

A timely statement from Steve Earle, a few live cuts and more...

"City of Immigrants" by Steve Earle (with Forro in the Dark) (from Washington Square Seranade)

"All of us are immigrants"

"Oklahoma Blues (live)" by Watermelon Slim (from Traveling Man - Disc 2 - The Depot)

The inimitable Watermelon Slim with our first listen to his forthcoming double live album.
"The One" by Bridge 19 (from In the Afterglow)

"Hot Cha (live)" by They Might Be Giants (from Flood Live in Australia)

One of my favorite albums, Flood, turned 30 years old back in January.  This is from a live performance of the album released for free by the band (I don't think it is still available).

"Don't Do It (live)" by Mrs. Henry (from Mrs. Henry Presents The Last Waltz)

Another track from that The Last Waltz tribute by L.A. band Mrs. Henry. We have some new, original music from them.

"Shootin' For The Moon" by Sonny Landreth (from South of I-10)

"Showboat" by Josh Ritter (from Gathering)

E2TG 2/19/2020 - Random Notes - Werewolves Mix (Second Wind Remix)

Random Notes:

I am still trying to get my bearings after a whirlwind week and weekend and jumping into this week with both feet in the fire (to mix at least two metaphors).
Thinking a lot about the state of the world and the state of our nation and how the last three years have been so exhausting and demoralizing. The evil of one person or even a group of people does not surprise me. I know that evil exists in this world, but what has been so disheartening is the large number of people who have supported and enabled this evil.
I wrote in this space for a while about everything that was going on, and then I stopped. I am not sure if I can articulate why I stopped. Maybe it was that I felt I was preaching to the choir.  I think for a time I thought that some people just weren't aware of what was happening.  That their were white supremacists in the highest levels of the government, that the people in charge of protecting our most precious resources (people and the environment etc.) were hell-bent on destroying what they were supposed to protect.
I have come to accept that their are a significant number of people who know exactly what is going on and either support these cruel policies or choose to ignore them. And that is what has been so disheartening.  I still maintain that their is a place for healthy debate on conservative vs. progressive viewpoints. But the fight we have today is not conservative vs. progressive or Democrat vs. Republican.  It is a fight for the heart of our country - for our existence as a democracy against the rising tide of totalitarianism.
To be honest, the Democratic Presidential nomination process has been especially disheartening. At a time, when we should be single-minded in our goal - we are divided. People are treating candidates as if they are on equal footing with the current occupant of the White House. That is not the case.
The purpose of the primaries and the caucuses should be to find our best candidate. If you support one candidate over the others, tell me why. Convince me, but do it without tearing down the other candidates.  One of this field will be the Democratic nominee and whether that person is our choice or not, we have to be committed to getting that person elected.
I do not claim to know whether we need the most progressive person or the most centrists. Certainly, there are no end of people who seem to know. Fine. Convince all of us. For the LGTBQ+ community, for communities of color, for the disabled, women - this election matters and is a matter of life and death.  Act like it, vote like it.

On another note:

I am  gearing up for the 2nd episode of Greetings from Nashville - my new morning show on WXNA. It will air tomorrow morning at 6AM on WXNA 101.5FM and wxnafm.org. If you miss the live broadcast, the show will be available on the archive shortly after 7AM.   Here is a sneak peak at part of the show!
