E2TG 2/5/2020 - Music City USA - Another Engine Mix (Sideshow Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

I hoped to be making my big announcement on this blog post, but I am still waiting for the official okay...

Ever since, 2014 or so, when I started really connecting with the local music community, I have been interested in making connections between the Nashville music I came of age (musically) listening to and the music being made today (and everything in between - including stuff I missed).  I didn't know what context I wanted to do this (or rather I had several ideas).

Nashville is called Music City. The term was used by WSM-AM announcer David Cobb (I don't know if he is any relation to Dave Cobb - super-producer) in a 1950 broadcast and caught on, but the idea of Nashville being a "musical city" can be credited to none other than Queen Victoria - who made that pronouncement upon hearing a performance by the Fisk Jubilee Singers in 1873.

If you read E2TG with any regularity, you know how enamored I am with the live music scene here in Nashville, and you probably have caught one of my "Music City Monday" shuffles which tries to highlight the musical diversity of the city.

I have a new project coming very soon, which I will be announcing as soon as I get the green light.  In the meantime, I need to state publicly that E2TG will always be a place to highlight music from all over regardless of genre (and with an emphasis on artists who may not get the attention from other music sites).

Now, we have a nifty mid-week shuffle, so check it out below.  Plus, the current Featured Friday Playlist and our Release calendar down below.

Wednesday Shuffle:

Today, we have some music we featured in 2018 and 2019 and more. Plus, we have a very rare David Bowie cover by an obscure band with a huge footprint in Nashville's music history.
"The Magical and Mystical Properties of Flowers" by The Membranes (from What Nature Give... Nature Takes Away)

"Voodoo Voodoo" by The Venus Fly Trap (from Icon)

"Queen Bitch" by Sideshow (from Sideshow EP)

An awesome cover of one of my favorite Bowie songs (I have a bunch of favorites to be honest).  Sideshow was a short-lived band that followed the breakup for Shadow 15 - the legendary Nashville band - featuring Scott Feinstein on guitar and vocals.  The band is notable for being the first Nashville band (first band?) for drummer Brad Pemberton (Ryan Adams, Iodine, Steve Earle, etc.)  I probably have some facts wrong or left out because I don't have the notes handy that Scott Feinstein sent me when he sent me this EP.  A delicious piece of Nashville rock history.

"Wreck on the Highway (LIVE)" by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band (from 2016/01/19 Chicago, Il.)

The final song of The River album - from a performance during the tour celebrating the 35th anniversary of the release of the album.

"Beginnings" by Autumn (from Chandelier)

"Someone's Digging in the Underground" by Tom House (from Winding Down the Road)

Always a good day when a Tom House song ends up in the shuffle.  This album marked House's first collaboration with Brock Zeman who would go on to record an album of Tom House songs - which we have been featuring of late.

"Northern Wind" by Chris Carroll (from Trouble and Time)

"Headin' North to South Bend" by Danny Sandock (from Breakin' New Ground)

The shuffle has been digging on Danny Sandock in recent days.  This is one of my favorite songs of his. And I will send it out to my DJ partner Sue since it is about Indiana.

"Ghost of Another All-Nighter" by John Rey-Reed (from Learnin' to Drive the Truck)

"Sold it Right There" by Clay Harper (from Bleak Beauty)

Will anyone make the connection as to where the first part of the post subtitle "Another Engine" comes from?  It is an indirect reference to this song. Clay Harper is a musician and business man, who was the founder of Atlanta's Fellini's Pizza.
