Today another reminder about the Magnolia Roads American Roots Hoedown IV - happening next Friday and Saturday April 26 and 27 at The 5 Spot. If you are on Facebook, go head and mark that you are GOING. Here's the Event Page.
Now, it is Wednesday and time to dive right into the Wild Wednesday Shuffle. I believe this one lives up to the name. New songs, classic songs, and who knows maybe some new classics.
Let's go!

All of this happened a long time ago when the world was a very different place. Of course, none of us knew that at the time.
(From The Drift - A Novel by Joe Wolfe-Mazeres) Available at Amazon.com (Kindle edition also available)
Okay.... it's been one of those weeks... brutal is not a strong enough word for it. But it is mid-week and all will be well soon enough - I suppose.
Time for "Wild Wednesday" on E2TG. We a good cross-section of music - including some from the "New Music" playlist and some classic tunes... let's jump!

I wanted to bring to your attention an upcoming show that might otherwise slip under your radar. If you are in Nashville and free this coming Sunday (July 22), I recommend you head to Dee's Country Cocktail Lounge in Madison around 7pm. Joe Goodkin (a Chicago songwriter who we have featured on E2TG) will be making a rare Nashville appearance, and some of my favorite Nashville songwriters are joining him (Joe Nolan, Tom Schreck, and Connor Rand). I want to make sure I take maximum credit for my small role (with minimal effort) in getting these folks together for this show. I think it will be a good one.
On to our "Wild Wednesday" shuffle:
The music in my phone's memory is a hodge podge of all sorts of things: current and past E2TG featured artists/bands, older (and more recent) albums from my personal collection, music I have downloaded for various sources - just for fun, music given to me by various people that was not specifically intended to be featured on E2TG, and maybe some other things. On Wednesdays, I hit shuffle on all those songs and see what comes up. It's really interesting (to me at least) in that each shuffle has it's own "personality" or flavor. And, I never know what is going to come up. I call Wednesday's "Wild" not because the list of songs is necessarily wildly eclectic (just sometimes) but because each shuffle is like a wildcard - you never know what it will be.
Let's go!

Well, I guess you could say we are in the home stretch of the 2017 Earie Award and actually for 2017 for E2TG overall. In so many ways, 2017 has been a very difficult year for myself and many others. I guess when I look back, I am trying to focus on the good moments, the new friendships, the accomplishments (my own and others), and hope despite the fear.
Anyway, after today, we have five more shuffles and five more days of Earies. The Golden Earies (Artist(s) and/or Band(s) of the Year) will be posted between Christmas and New Year's Day.
Let's jump to it!

Well.... Americana Fest 2017 is in the books... I feel kind of overwhelmed about what to write about the last two days (for me) of the conference. I think I got some sort of post-AMA drip thing going- runny nose and scratchy throat.... but I'm carrying on...
Look for some more detailed analysis forthcoming... overall, I have to say, although I am probably not the best person to explain what Americana music is... as evidenced my attempts this past week to explain it to people... what I can say without any hesitation is that any festival that can find a place for as diverse a set of artists I saw (and missed) last week is okay in my book. From Robyn Hitchcock to the Blackfoot Gypsies, from Dave Alvin to Brian Wright, from North Mississippi All-Stars to Darrin Bradbury... etc. etc. etc.
The other thing I want to say today is that I am super proud about the performances of the three E2TG Artists of the Year who played AMA Fest.
2014 Artist of the Year Darrin Bradbury: From his raucous single-song performance on Tuesday night - which ended with him leaping off the stage and disappearing into the crowd to his utterly charming and arresting performance at his official showcase Saturday night at The Anchor. The Saturday night show was probably among the five or six best Darrin Bradbury shows I have ever seen. (And I've seen a bunch). Playing to a crowd - many of whom were there to see the nights final act - The Secret Sisters (who were phenomenal by the way) - Darrin pulled a good mix of his classics with some brand new songs and he utterly won over the crowd - as he has the amazing ability to do.
2015 Artist of the Year Jon Latham: For someone who did not have an official showcase (a glaring oversight in my opinion) - Latham managed to stay extremely busy all week. He, too, was awesome on Tuesday night. Unfortunately, I missed a couple of his other performances during the week, but his closing set at the Cafe Rooster party on Saturday at Little Harpeth was among my favorite moments of the festival. Backed by his killer band, Jon commanded the stage in a way that he does better than most. He took us, the audience, on an emotional ride. His introduction to "Lifers" - the title track from his latest album - which he dedicated to the late Ben Eyestone, Jessi Zazu, and Chris Porter literally drove me to tears.
2016 Artist of the Year Brian Wright: Along with Aaron Lee Tasjan - Wright was one of busiest performers at the festival. I saw him three times - all were spectacular, but his Friday night official showcase was nothing short of brilliant. Wright is one of the few artists who can be equally captivating solo acoustic as he is playing full-on rock and roll with his amazing band. He flat out gives his all to every performance and I for one cannot look away when he is playing.
So much more to write about but not enough time...
In case you missed it, please check out the latest Guest blog post from Collins de la Cour. It is her review of Gaelynn Lea's utterly captivating performance at the American Legion on Friday night. Check it out HERE.
Meanwhile, it Monday and we have another Music City Monday shuffle of songs somehow connected to the city of music...

Just when I think things cannot possibly get any worse, the "President" (I use quotes because I feel the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue has lost the moral authority to lead this nation) opens his mouth again. A few observations about yesterday's press conference/national embarrassment, the sitting US President used stronger words to denounce the press than he did to denounce fascists, racists, and white supremacists. He placed that same group of hatemongers on the same level as those who actively (and, yes, sometimes violently) oppose them. He did not name the victim of the fascists/racists/white supremacists but he could take the time to plug his business interest in Charlottesville.
At this point, it seems safe to say that those who still support this man will not be swayed from that support by anything. Yesterday, was metaphorically speaking - shooting someone on 5th Avenue - and while I hope he did lose some votes, it is clear that there are many who still support him.
Also, while I applaud the Republicans on the right who have denounced the President, that applaud is muted until I see action to backup that denouncement.
It seems pretty clear to me that we have a fascist executive branch that is working towards totalitarianism.
I will repeat that - yes I hold primarily leftist views - but I do respect the opinions of those on the right. I believe this nation is best when all sides work together. But when it comes to the people who want to wipe out whole groups of people and who use the symbols of hate and genocide proudly, there is not room for compromise and there are only two sides and there is not moral ambiguity as to which side is evil.
I cannot wait for the day when I do not have to write about things like this in this forum, but that day is not today.

We have reached mid-week and Wednesday is when we let things get "Wild" at E2TG. I shuffle up all the songs currently on my phone and see what happens. I think the term"wild" fits today's shuffle pretty well.....

Much on my mind, as we muddle through this post-fact, post-truth, post-decorum, post-civility, post-shared humanity, post-(you-name-it) world. Look, corrupt politicians are nothing new. But, it does seem like in the past, there was at least some effort to conceal that corruption and often when it was exposed, it had real consequences. Nowadays, it seems like corruption is worn like a badge of honor, and it is at best denied or at worst accepted.
Also thinking about social media and Facebook in particular. People tend to use this platform in many different ways. I still contend that all technology is neutral, that is only through man's use of the technology that it becomes good or evil. That being said, I have friends who use Facebook solely to share political posts, those who use it (almost) exclusively to promote their music, those who post humorous posts, those who post pictures of children, grandchildren, or pets, etc. I think all of those are fine. There is, though, one phenomenon that I just don't get.... There are some people who feel th need to chime in and comment on things that really don't have any thing to do with them. I'll give a hypothetical example: A friend posts something on my wall that is basically on inside joke or a reference that makes sense to only a small group of people. Some people will jump in and make irrelevant comments. Another example, a celebrity passes away, and people are posting remembrances of that person and what they and/or their work meant to them. There is always that person who feels the need to add either by comment or post, "Eh, I never was a fan" or "I don't know who that is but...." I guess it's a pet peeve of mine, but if a post doesn't directly address you or you have nothing meaningful to add, then just let it go.
To be honest, the only time I have "un-friended" AND blocked someone was for this very thing. They were a friend who I had not really interacted with at all for several years. Someone important to me made a heartfelt post about something and this person (who did not know the original poster at all) jumped in and made a totally insensitive comment basically discounting the original poster's experience. Since I was the only link between the original poster and the person making the comment, I felt responsible for their behavior and so I deleted them as a friend and blocked them.
There is something maybe important in all my ranting, but I'm not sure what it is... something about how divided we are as a nation and the amount of incivility that exists in that divide....
Well, it's Monday when we jump in with our Music City Monday shuffle - songs with some connection to Nashville, Tennessee....

It is so easy to become overcome with cynicism. Truth be told, it's never been that hard for me, but nowadays, it is a real struggle. The problem with cynicism is that while it may "feel" good, it actually does not accomplish anything. I used to think that cynicism and idealism were opposites. Like you start off idealistic and over time become cynical or something like that, but I don't think that is the case at all. I still consider myself an idealist, though, I can certainly be cynical at times. I also do not think idealism and naiveté are the same thing at all. I call myself an idealist, because I can envision the world/ a world when things work as I think they should. If I an naive, then I imagine that my vision of a "perfect" world is the only true vision and/or I expect that the world will work the way I think it should. I know perfectly well that both of those are not true. My vision (even if possible) would mostly like not work the way I think it would or would at least fall short of perfection. And, I am fully aware that the world will never completely fall in line with my vision.
Cynicism is coming to this realization and giving up. Hope or faith if you will, is to continue to fight for the ideal even while knowing that ultimately you are going to fall short.

It seems like a good time to check-in... yep, it is June 5, 2017, and there are still white supremacists in positions of power in the White House.

Had a good time celebrating the 1st Anniversary of WXNA yesterday. As someone who come of age musically speaking with college radio (WRVU in particular), I have to say, WXNA has filled huge gap in the Nashville radio landscape. There is great original programming every single day, all day long, and I am so happy to be a part of it.
TONIGHT! Yes, the Predator's are in the Stanley Cup Finals, and Nashville is abuzz. Game 4 is tonight, but I am going to recommend you get yourself to The Basement East for the Jon Latham Benefit tonight. Not only is it a great cause for a great guy, the music is going to be incredible. Jon's ace band will be the house band with an incredible lineup of guest singers. You can check in on the game on your phone as you need to...
Okay, I was off last Monday, so this is our first Music City Monday in a couple of weeks... so let's do this thing!

Can you believe May is almost over? I say almost because we have two bits of unfinished business to get to before we can put it in the books...
Last before first, we have the grand finale of the E2TG Residency at The 5 Spot in East Nashville. This month has been amazing, and I hope you will come out to help us close this thing out in style. FuzzQueen are opening the night. I am so psyched to see them... Later, it is Amelia White and her Blue Souvenirs featuring Sergio Webb, Parker Hawkins, Megan Carchman, and Dave Coleman! I will be reading some more of my fiction/poetry, and I have some beer koozies that need a good home. Come hang with us!
First, though, we have one final shuffle for the month of May. It is Wednesday so we shuffle up all the songs on my phone. We have a good mix of old and new music. Let's get to it!

Okay... Look, as I have been saying and saying... I do not like talking "politics" on E2TG. Although, my own leanings are decidedly to the left, and I consider myself a progressive, I do recognize that there is room on almost any issue for differing viewpoints, and I believe that (at least in theory) our strength as a nation comes from working together to find common ground - even if the outcome is not ideal for either "side". I also believe that the false "duality"of our current two party system does not leave room for nuances of opinions. (i.e. you are either for or against something. No middle ground allowed). However, where I feel I must speak out is on matters that I believe transcend (or should transcend) "politics". Right now, there is evil in the world. The rise of fascist and neo-fascists around the globe, the current situation for minorities of all kinds around the world... threats of genocide. If you don't know what I'm talking about, look around. The United States should be a global leader in opposing this things, but as things currently stand, we seem to be supporting the oppressors, and we are doing own forms of oppression. It is the rights of all people - especially those who are most at risk that makes me take up time and space out of my music blog to speak out.
Nevertheless, the fact that it is necessary in 2017 to have a march to support science. When did science become a political issue? (I am aware of the evolution vs. creation debates). When did suppressing scientific research and gagging scientists become okay?

All right, well, ICYMI, last night, I revealed the details of the final week of the E2TG May Residency at The 5 Spot in East Nashville. I am so excited to have Amelia White and the Blue Souvenirs helping close out our month. And, joining them, all the way from Washington D.C. will be Fuzzqueen. Fuzzqueen is the current incarnation of Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray (who have been featured here for a few years). This promises to be, most likely, our most diverse night of music for the whole month. Fuzzqueen has suggested that ear plugs are in order. It will be a great way to end the month!
Meanwhile, it is Monday and we have a wonderful selection of Music City related songs for you...

Okay - it's Wednesday. It's been a very busy week, and things do not seem to be slowing down any time soon. But, it's all good.
Wednesday, we shuffle up every single song in my phone's memory and see what happens. So, these may be newer songs, random songs that don't fit another classification, "stragglers" from prior featured albums, things I don't remember adding to my phone, classics, favorites, and assorted goodness. We call it "Wild Wednesday". For one, the results can be pretty wild, but mainly, "wild" as in "wildcard".
Let's jump!

Watching with interest the testimony from the FBI Director to Congress. This are surely historic and terrifying times.
Friday night - took in a bunch of great music and celebrating St. Patrick's Day in a very traditional way. Tim Carroll Rock n Roll Happy Hour with Luella - always a great way to start a Friday.
Ben de la Cour, Clark Paterson, and Patrick Kinsley and A Fistful of Dollars were all wonderful.
I spent the rest of the weekend trying to catch up on some things.
Well - it is Monday and time for some Music City Monday tunes. All artists with a connection to Nashville, Tennessee. Go!

Today what is on my mind is intellectual curiosity. I have heard this term used quite a bit recently, and often in the context of the current President lacking this quality. So, I wondered what does this mean...
"The intellectually curious person has a deep and persistent desire to know. She asks and seeks answers to the “why” questions. And she doesn’t stop asking at a surface level, but instead asks probing questions in order to peel back layers of explanation to get at the foundational ideas concerning a particular issue." from Psychology Today April 2014
So, I think this means (in simplistic terms): I observe something or get some information, and I first ask is this information/observation true. And if it turns out to be true or accurate, then I begin asking "why"and I keep asking "why" until I get to the core issue/ truth.
So, how does this relate to our current administration. "Immigrants and refugees commit a disproportionate number of crimes" - maybe this was said by someone or maybe I noticed when I read a news article about a crime - it often seems like the perpetrator is a non-citizen. Okay - what next. An intellectually curious person would first try to get data and facts to support this statement or observation and then (IF) proven would begin asking "Why" questions and continue until reaching a core issue that can be addressed in a meaningful way.
As for someone lacking intellectual curiosity... well, I think we can all see what would happen next...

Tonight - Brian Langlinais wraps up his month-long residency at The 5 Spot. It will be a party and believe me Cajun's know how to party. E2TG faves Adrian + Meredith open plus Fifth and Main (from Detroit) will perform followed by Langlinais and Earl 6. Not to mention a promise of Cajun food!
Let's jump right into the Wild Wednesday shuffle- true to its name - we cover a lot of musical ground today...

The above comments should be a cause for alarm to any rational thinking American citizen regardless of political affiliation. This is totalitarianism at work - and in the context of the information coming about Russia and the elections, it should be the impetus to speed up the process of impeachment (which seems at this point to be inevitable). This kind of mentality which seems to inhabit the current administration runs counter to the guiding principles of this nation.
On a more personal level, we are already seeing proposed changes which will cause great harm to millions of American's with disabilities. The disabled were among the many groups targeted by the Nazi party in Germany. This is not a coincidence.
Enough - for now.
I attended the 9th Annual Love is Deaf show at Douglas Corner. It was my first to attend. To me this was a quintessential Nashville event. Couple perform a song - in many cases 1 partner is a non-musician and the other is a professional. The performers and the audience contained some pretty incredible names. The performances ranged from funny, to touching, to gorgeous. I definitely intend to make this a valentine's day tradition. My Double Shot partner Sue Havlish made me proud - backed my Mark Robinson on bongos. Among the performers was Tommy Tutone of "867-5309" fame - who is a long time Nashville resident. Also, Don Henry, Bobby Braddock's daughter, John Reed and Heather Lose, and many more...
It is Wednesday and we have our usual "Wild Wednesday" shuffle which comes from a shuffle of all of the songs on my device.

“Our opponents, the media and the whole world will soon see, as we begin to take further actions, that the powers of the president to protect our country are very substantial and will not be questioned,” said Stephen Miller, Mr Donald Trump’s senior policy director.

First of all, let me state for the record... "Alternative facts" is just an Orwell way to say "Outright Lies". That's not political. That's just truth.
Second of all, my despair of recent times was helped along by the news streaming in from all over the world of the women (and men) marching in unity for the rights of all,
I try to keep E2TG a politics-free zone, but I am watching and I will speak-up when necessary. In my opinion, we are experiencing the greatest threat to our democracy I have seen in my lifetime (or at least since I have been aware of such things). I am staunchly what I am, but I am not one that believes that "my side" has a monopoly on the truth or has all the answers. I feel the place we are now goes beyond "Right vs. Left" "Conservative vs. Liberal" "Democrat vs. Republican". History will judge, and I feel that in standing against fascism and hate and fear and xenophobia and racism and sexism and homophobia that I am standing on the right side of history.
Now, back to our normal programming. It is Monday and we have a fine line-up of great Nashville-based music spanning the last 30+ years. Let's go!

I logged on to Facebook this morning to read about the passing of Chris Porter and a band mate in an auto accident last night on their way home from a show. Another band member was in serious condition last I heard. I did not know Chris well, but several of my musician friends did, and my heart goes out to all who are feeling this loss today. And to all my touring musician friends, be safe.
What comes to my mind is a $2 Tuesday show earlier this year. I was really tired, and I had about decided to pack it in before the last act played. Jon Latham said, you really don't want leave, and he told me that Chris and his band were going to play. So, I stayed, and Porter did an amazing kickass rock and roll set that woke me up good and proper. I am really glad I stayed.

Really dug the second night of Crackerboot's Residency at The 5 Spot. Luella, Bill DeMain and company sounded amazing. It was great to see and hear Ben de la Cour and William Lee who opened.

Welcome back to E2TG! So, last night Amelia White wrapped up her month-long residency at The 5 Spot. As special guest Reckless Johnny Wales said, this means she is now a doctor! Reckless Johnny sounded fantastic - as usual - backed by Chris Tench on guitar.
Amelia had an incredible band backing her including Robert Mache from Memphis, Parker Hawkins, and Fran Breen. Plus Chris Tench sat in for most of the set. Special guest Julie Christensen added her legendary vocals to some of Amelia's songs plus did a few of her own songs. Surprise guest Tomi Lynn Lunsford joined Christensen to sing background on "Dogs Bark" and then stayed to back up the last song of the night. A wonderful ending to a fantastic residency.
Tonight: The 5 Spot is once again the place to be. Mark Robinson wraps up his Residency (I guess he will be a doctor now, too) in style. With an expanded showband with Mark Jordan and Ben Graves joining Daniel Seymour and Rick Schell. Plus the special guests are two of the finest vocalist Nashville has to offer... Jonell Mosser and Vickie Carrico. Noted music blog, Ear to the Ground called the Mark Robinson Band one of the best live bands around, and they have certainly lived up to that this month. Tonight will be one to remember. 6:00pm.
It is Thursday when we throw things back:
