E2TG 7/9/2020 - Not Sure What to Say - Aegis of Song Mix (Halloween Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Way too much on my mind... I long for a simpler, quieter time, but now, it all seems so cacophonous and loud. People are shouting in righteous anger - some are shouting for justice and rights which have been denied for decades or centuries.  Others are shouting for other reasons - less clearly justified to me, but nonetheless, there is a lot of shouting.  Every day brings at least one new "breaking" atrocity from the current president. And, we are all - justifiably (I think) angry.

In Nashville, there wee 688 new cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours - another new record. Cases are on the rise in several states, and yet, I see people who seem to be living their lives as if nothing is going on. And, so, for those us who are taking this seriously, there seems to be no end in sight. There is a void of leadership on this issue and apathy if not outright disdain for taking precautions  from the masses.

I don't know - I think I need to listen to some music... let's go!

And, we have reached the end of our review of the Featured Friday Playlist from 7/3/2020. A brand new playlist will be up tomorrow.  You can still check out this week's playlist until the new one posts.  We have the final three songs to review. Songs 17-19.  As usual, I saved some of our best music for the end.  Also, please follow E2TG Featured Friday Playlist on Spotify so you don't miss anything!

17. "Laura Jones" by Matthew Frederick
We start things off with a wonderful song by a singer-songwriter from Wales. Frederick fronts the band Climbing Trees.  This is his brand new single.
18. "Typhoon" by Laura Cortese & the Dance Cards
Next, we have the second Featured Friday appearance for Laura Cortese & the Dance Cards - it is the latest single ahead of the July 17th release of their new album Bitter Better. Cortese is now  based in Belgium, and the album was recorded ahead of the quarantine.
19. "Contradictions" by Petter Carlsen
And we close out this segment and the playlist with another returning artist. The Norwegian singer-songwriter is back with another track from his forthcoming new album The Sum of Every Shade.

I hope you enjoyed listening to this week's playlist at least as much as I love bringing it to you.  Tune in tomorrow for a brand new list.  We already have 36 minutes of music on deck - and that is before tomorrow's new releases and any last minute adds. It looks like next week's list could be a long one!

Wild Wednesday Morning Shuffle - Robes of the Queen Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Okay - I'm even more rushed than usual.  So let me get right it.

Welcome to our new Facebook followers!

It is Day 3 of the WXNA Spring Pledge Drive - so if you want to give - the easiest way is to go to wxnafm.org  Or you can call 615-933-9962.  You can make a one-time pledge or set up an automatic monthly deduction.  Either way - there is great swag and you will be helping to support an incredible community resource.

Tonight is the CD release show for Meghan Hayes excellent album - Seen Enough Leavers - at the 5 Spot at 6pm.  She has a great band backing her and some cool songwriters opening the show.  Seen Enough Leavers is a remarkable album.

Now Wednesday - the day we get wild and wacky!  Well, I guess we do that every day... but we call it Wild Wednesday for good reason - as you will soon see.

"My Only True Friend" by Gregg Allman

We start things off with the lead single and only original song from the posthumously released final album by the great Gregg Allman.  The album was produced by Don Was and recorded at FAME studios in Muscle Shoals.

"The River (Instrumental)" by Martha Reich

Next up, we have an instrumental track from Brave Bird by New Mexico based singer-songwriter Martha Reich.  The album was one we featured a lot last year.

"The Four Corners" by Danny Sandock

Next up, we have our old friend California (by way of Indiana - with a stop in Tennessee) singer-songwriter Danny Sandock with a track from his 2014 album Breakin' New Ground.  The song is about that point where four states meet.

"Must Be Nice" by Rat Fancy

Next up, we have California twee pop punk rockers Rat Fancy with a track from their upcoming debut album Stay Cool.
"Resistance" by Lions'Den

Next up, we have a track from Songbird by Lions'Den - a project of guitarist  Rhy Dongju - it is guitar driven electronic music. Cool stuff.

"I Wouldn't Buy a Used Car from Him" by Norma Jean

Next up, we have a 1965 single from country music artist Norma Jean - taken from her album Pretty Miss Norma Jean - released while she was appearing on the Porter Wagoner Show.

"Kitty Wells Dresses" by Laura Cantrell

Next up - a lovely song about another country legend - this by Nashville native Laura Cantrell. J Mar played a Laura Cantrell song Monday night while I was working the WXNA Pledge Drive, so it is really cool this came up today.

"Losing Heart" by The Secret Sisters

How about The Secret Sisters covering a modern country legend - Brandi Carlile. This is from the anniversary tribute to her album The Story - called Cover Stories which was released 2017 - 10 years after the release of the original album.

"Help Me Remember" by Suzette Lawrence and The Neon Angels

Nashville (by way of L.A.)' honky tonk angel - Suzette Lawrence is up next with a track from her album Tear Up the Honky Tonk.

"Black Flag Blues" by Adam Carroll (feat. Scott Nolan)

More Adam Carroll - this time it's one of my favorite songs of his - from his 2008 album Old Town Rock N Roll. Featuring Canadian singer-songwriter Scott Nolan. A wonderful track.

"Lightning" by Grumsling

Next up - our old friends from California - Grumsling with a track from their album A Church, On a Boat, In the Sea.  It's been a little while since we've heard from them. I loved their cinematic take on rock and roll.

"Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)" by Arcade Fire

And we close with Arcade Fire with a track from their 2007 album Funeral.  A great track to close out the day.

Friday Morning Music Shuffle - Last Hurrah? Mix

Well, it's Friday again, and we've reached what will likely be the final Morning Shuffle of 2012.  As I mentioned yesterday, I loaded up my new memory card with a random sampling of my digital music collection.  I left some space for all of the great new music to come in 2013.

UPDATE on Band of the Year Voting:  As of the time I am writing this post, we've had in the neighborhood of 1750 votes.  Brooklyn based The Disappointment are holding a 5% point leave over Skeletons in the Piano who are from Upstate New York.  Currently, New York band The Great American Novel are running third.  You've got a couple more days to vote. Voting will end just before Midnight (Central Time) on Sunday December 30.  Also, we need about 200 more votes to surpass our total vote count for last years inaugural Band of the Year poll.  So keep the votes coming.  Here is where to vote:  CLICK HERE

Now for the shuffle which is pretty mind-blowingly eclectic and includes some songs I probably heard for the first time today.  After the JUMP!

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle - Defying Deification Mix

April 5th, and I've reached the last day of my work week.  It's likely that there will not be a music shuffle tomorrow, but I've got a lot of ground to cover - Coming soon:  Band of the Month Poll for March, Band of the Week for the first week of April, plus tons of work on a project which I hope to be able to announce soon.

To the shuffle:

My parents were both born in Louisiana, and I have a fair amount (about 3/4) of cajun blood running through my veins.  When I hear the chank-a-chank of the accordian and fiddle, I can't help but tap my toes.

Steve Riley & the Mamou Playboys - Danser san comprendre/Dancing Without Understanding from their 2011 album Grand Isle. One of the best contemporary practitioners  of Cajun music, Grand Isle pushes this traditional regional folk music into the 20th Century with some elements of modern rock without losing the essence of what they are all about.  Danser san Comprendre/Dancing without Understanding is en excellent introduction to this band.

A video of Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys

Although my mother was born in the heart of Cajun country, my dad was actually born in Metarie - part of the New Orleans Metropolitan Area. I feel a connection to the Crescent City which belies the limited time I've actually spend there.

Dear New Orleans is a live benefit album for Sweet Home New Orleans and the Gulf Restoration Network.  It features a wide range of artists - everyone from My Morning Jacket to the Flobots to Steve Earle. Our track today, is a cover of a Neil Young penned CSN&Y song Ohio performed by R.E.M. bassist, Mike Mills accompanied by the New Orleans trombone band, Bonerama.

Next, we have another cover.  Remember when Thursday's were all about covers here at Ear to the Ground?  Apparently, my shuffle button does...

Ane Brun was born in Norway, but currently lives in Sweden. She is a singer songwriter who has been actively making music since 1998.  She recently dropped a fine cover Arcade Fire's Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels) (spelled Neighbourhood on my download) from the 2004 album Funeral.
