Wild Wednesday Morning Shuffle - Big Bang Boom Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Well, first off, I have to say that night 2 of the Brian Wright and the Sneak-Ups Residency at The 5 Spot somehow manged to top the first week. Guest Audley Freed (The Black Crowes, etc.) sat in for a couple of songs - including a killer version of "Cortez the Killer".  Brian Wright and his incredible band put on a great rock n roll show. From the exaltation of "Glory Hallelujah" to the emotional gut punch that is "Heavy Metal Shed Kids" - it was one of the best live shows I have experienced in a good while.  Brian Wright has been a favorite of mind since I first heard his music.  When he plays solo, it can be amazing. Full-band - it is something else entirely. And this new band (Wade Cofer, Jon Latham, Matty Apples, Jimmy Matt Rowlan, Rob Crowell, Sally Jaye, and Kristen Englenz) is just out of this world.  They still have two weeks to go, and I can wait to see where they take it from here.

Next, more about the Magnolia Roads American Roots Hoedown IV.  As if the music artists we've already mentioned were not enough, the nights will also include a community canvas and more.  The silent auction, which I previously mentioned, and which benefits the Ben Eyestone Fund of the Musicians Health Alliance, is going to have many incredible items. The auction will be done all on-line - so even if you can't make it to the shows, you can still participate. I will be posting the links when they are available.  One of the items comes from Wilco, an autographed poster book and more...signed poster, signed toy, scarf, bar towel, CD and pin.

Now, let's get to today's shuffle.  It is Wednesday, and I think this shuffle lives up to the "Wild" designation. Besides being wild, it is also filled with excellent music (both new and not as new).  Let's go!

"Gloria Sudafed" by SPC ECO

First up, we have the London based duo, SPC ECO with another great track from their release Fifteen. I've been really digging this album.
"South Bend Soldiers On" by Robbie Fulks

Next up, we have the lovely "Sound Bend Soldiers On" by Robbie Fulks from his 2016 album Upland Stories - which was produced by Steve Albini. Fulks is an amazing songwriter with a career spanning over 30 years.

"Baby's Got A Bad Idea" by Justin Townes Earle

Next up, we have Justin Townes Earle from his 2012 album, Nothing's Gonna Change the Way You Feel About Me Now.  The album features the musical talents of folks like Cory Younts, Amanda Shires, Paul Niehaus, and Bryn Davies.

"Hannah" by Dog Without Warning

Next up, we have our old friends from the Bay Area - Dog Without Warning.  This song is from their album Faith in Knots: 7 Year Itch - which is a re-recording of most of the songs from their 2009 debut album Faith in Knots. I first heard Dog Without Warning on the late and lamented on-line festival - Couch by Couchwest. I have been a fan ever since. This re-recording was released in 2016.

"In My Life" by The Beatles

The Beatles from Rubber Soul.  George Martin playing piano - which was sped up to sound like a harpsichord.

"Cordelia" by Adam Carroll

Another one from I Walked in Them Shoes which will be available Friday!  Be sure to get on this album when it released. I think it is an instant classic.

"My Lenore" by Broken Guru

Next up, we have another long-time E2TG favorite - New York City based Broken Guru from their 2017 album Violets Exposed to Radiation.  This is the final track on the album which we covered extensively when it was first out.

"Go Home Daddy (You're Drunk)" by James Crawford

Next up, we have a track from my old high school classmate James Crawford from his self-titled album released about five years ago.  I could not find any videos for Crawford on YouTube. The CD is still available via Amazon. Crawford was a metal head in high school.  When I first wrote about this album back in 2014, I described it as if Chet Atkins had been influenced by Tom Waits. This is the opening song on the album.

"Crutches" by Youngstrr Joey

Another blast from our past, this is a track from Girlled Wiig which came out in 2015. Experimental music from the U.K.  The album cover features an image of actress Kristen Wiig altered to show her with ram's horns, with samurai swords strapped across her back and carrying a space pistol surrounded by fire.  Those who know, know. I'm not sure I'm in that category, though. But the music is cool.

"Gimme My Rock n' Roll" by The Satisfactors

Next up, some pure rock n roll from an album we covered back in 2014. The Satisfactors were a New Jersey supergroup featuring Gar Francis of The Doughboys, Kenny Aaronson, and more.

"Whiskey"  by Delta Deep

We close things out with some deep delta blues from this band we covered a few years back. Delta Deep features lead guitarist Phil Collen of Def Leppard and powerhouse vocalist Debbi Blackwell-Cook.
