Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle - To and Fro Mix

I added some new music last night - I'm having some technical difficulties, but whatever...

A very cool mix this morning so sit right down and let me tell you all about it...
First up is a track from the latest twitter discovery... It's Big Mosey who hail from Brooklyn, New York. Head over to their site for a free download of today's featured song, Harold Called in the Morning, and keep your ear to the ground for more from these guys.

Check out the band's EP - Homeward at Daybreak which you can get for a song* at Amazon by clicking on the album cover below:

*a song in this case equals just under $4.00

Next up is another fine track from the amazing Bang Bang Boogaloo: Beyond Beyond is Beyond compilation. This comes to us from a band called Conspiracy of Owls  a Detroit band - the song we have is one the band's 2010 self-titled album, and is called The Lesson.

Click on the kinda scary picture below to go to Amazon and get your own copy of Conspiracy of Owls for under $9.00.

Next the first of two tracks without vocals... from our current Band of the Week - From the Outside comes this propulsive number called Don't Look Back which is off of the brand new The Sound of Motion album which you can get for name your own price using the widget below (via Bandcamp)

Next comes a track by Jonti who comes from Sydney, Australia and is on the Stones Throw label in the U.S. - he's just come out with a collection called Sine & Moon (The Album) which includes today's track, Nagoya Train Station 3AM. Click on the album title to grab a free download of  the album.

If you like what you hear, click on the album cover below to get Jonti's October release Twirligig for just under $9.00.

And finally, we've let too many days go by without a track from MAKAR ;-)  So, here goes one we've featured before, but it's a good one... called In the Know from Funeral Genius.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle - Rebel Child in a Gilded Cage Mix

Here go again - promise of change (for the better) on the horizon. Refreshed and revitalized (at least for the moment). And, I'm ready to get into the music shuffle for another week...

Chronic Town - the first EP from Athens, Georgia own R.E.M. - is going to be 30 years old this year. We start out with the song featured in the live performance video above called 1,000,000. You can grab the whole Chronic Town EP plus a slew of early rarities from the Dead Lead Letter Office album - by clicking on the album cover below.  It'll cost you less than $10 from Amazon.

Beat Rodeo were a massively underrated band from the 80s.  They released a couple of albums on I.R.S. Records.  I first caught up with them on an episode of the classic show I.R.S. Records Presents The Cutting Edge hosted by Peter Zaremba of the Fleshtones.

Our song today comes from the  band's Home in the Heart of the Beat LP.  Song for an Angry Young Man. Purchase and download the album by clicking the album cover below (Amazon.com):

Richard Thompson has been making great music for over 40 years now.  Today's song comes from his 2007 release, Sweet Warrior.

It's a track called Dad's Gonna Kill Me.  Purchase and download Sweet Warrior by clicking the album cover below (Amazon.com)

Finally, we jump into the near present with a track from the wildly popular and critically acclaimed album 21 by Adele.

The track is called I'll Be Waiting.  You can get 21 by clicking the album cover below and purchasing and downloading the album.(via Amazon.com)

Excerpt: RT: The Life and Music of Richard Thompson is a box set by Richard Thompson, released in February 2006. This box set gives an extensive overview of Thompson's long career without including content from any of his mainstream albums. While many of the songs included will be familiar to Thompson fans, the actual tracks are mostly live and nearly all previously unreleased, and the arrangements are often different from those of the original recording. Thompson himself granted the compilers access to his personal archives of recordings and photos, and other collectors of Thompsonia (most notably American record producer Edward Haber) also contributed to the set. Thompson retained (and exercised) the right of veto over any aspect of the set. Of particular interest are live tracks by Richard and Linda Thompson (including a few from the 1982 "tour from hell"), songs demoed for his first solo album Henry The Human Fly as well as several of Thompson's comic songs ("Madonna's Wedding" and his lampooning of Janet Jackson's infamous breast baring moment at the Super Bowl) and several songs that Thompson himself has nev...More: http: //booksllc.net/?id=402567

Band of the Week - Year 2 - Week 8 or 9 - From the Outside

For our newer readers, who may be quick to point out that From the Outside is one person, I will point to our long and storied history of Bands of the Week which includes many fine one-person bands and at least one small pony.  Except not the small pony part....  But anyway, as you study this long and illustrious list, you will see that we are dedicated to introducing bands, regardless of genre or geographic locale, who we dig and think some of our readers might dig, too.

From the Outside, based in Sao Paulo, Brazil,  is already part of the extended Ear to the Ground family... yes, I said family... too weird?  whatever... We featured them in an earlier Ear to the Ground Recommends post (or whatever I called it).  But, Rafael Veiga who is From the Outside just released a new full length album, and we gave a listen last night and loved what we heard.

From the Outside does Electronic/Post-Rock stuff, and The Sound of Motion demonstrates a diversity of cool sounds.   The Sound of Motion is a follow-up to the Matching Opposites EP which was released way back in September of 2011.

If you like what you hear, download those two releases via Bandcamp (Name your price), and get all social media-like and connect at Twitter and Facebook.  Or even You Tube.

I'll leave you with a video of a song from the new one....

Friday Morning Music Shuffle - Casey Jones is Ready Mix

In the course of the 8 months  I've been writing this here blog-thing, I've had the good fortune to meet some truly amazing and interesting people from all over the world. I gone down some rabbit holes and found gold (is that a mixed metaphor or just a goofy statement).  One rabbit hole has lead me to an incredibly rich and vibrant music scene in the New York/New Jersey area. In fact, I'm officially declaring myself the preeminent New York/New Jersey music blogger who lives in Nashville. Anyone care to challenge me for that title? Hmm? No. Okay then, the ayes have it.

One of the first bands that started me on this journey is a hard rocking band Montclair, New Jersey called Those Mockingbirds.  On their EP, Fa Sol La (out in a few days on vinyl), they stretch there musical muscles and bring it. "I'm quite drunk on your intimate cocktail" from today's track, The Bloodiest Gums, speaks to an all too familiar pain and is nice counter-part to some of the more straight-ahead rockers on the EP.  Not that Bloodiest Gums doesn't rock.  In fact, it rocks me all the way to center of my heart.

Take a listen to The Bloodiest Gums

and check out their earlier release No Symmetry over at Amazon - you can grab it for under 4 bucks.

Of course not all of the great music I've discovered since I began writing this blog comes from New York and New Jersey. One of the first contacts I made on Twitter - even before I began writing Ear to the Ground was a group made up of three brothers who currently live right in my backyard (not literally, but if they are willing to fight it out with my three dogs, they are welcome, too.).  The Redding Brothers are a pretty impressive lot. They release a song-a-week for an entire year. They delve in to some pretty deep lyrical territory. I was just reading about the acapella group Days of Youth which includes some younger Reddings.  Last year, Gabriel, the youngest of the Redding Brothers (band), released an impressive solo album called Untethered.  I was pleasantly surprised at the experimental sound of the record which contains a variety of styles. I can't say for sure why I was surprised...  The song today is Waterfall.

You can grab Untethered by Gabirel here:

Ben Semmens, who also goes by the moniker BenSem, is a helluva good singer-songwriter from South Wales. He is wrapping up a new album which he recorded on Cumberland Island in Georgia (USA). The album is currently expect out in March, and I can't wait to hear it.  In the meantime, I've got his album Western Lights to keep me happy, and I'm pleased today to have heard two great tracks from that album.  Science Project and the song that first turned me onto Mr. Semmens - the luscious Carol Ann.

Western Lights can be yours for a song (under $9 bucks actually) by clicking the album cover below:

Stomacher are an awesome band from the Bay Area.  They are also wrapping up work on a new album. They used to the wonderful resource kickstarter to um.. kickstart this one. I am waiting with bated breath for this one as well.  Their 2009 release Sentimental Education has been burning up my MP3 player since I discovered these guys last year. Amazon will also hook you up with this album and their previous self-titled album. Check it out:

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle - Pardon Me, Sir Mix

Sorry for there not being a music shuffle yesterday, but I was incarcerated indisposed or something like that,  but I'm back at it - albeit later than usual - today.

Rainy morning.  Once again, dealing with my play lists  being unavailable, but one cover did come up today.

I just finished watching "The Runaways" movie, and went digging around and came up with this gem or a cover.  Joan Jett covers The Minutemen er I mean Creedence Clearwater Revival's song Have You Ever Seen the Rain? from her Hit List album which also features a Door's Cover and a cover of The Sex Pistol's Pretty Vacant.

Next up is the late, great Etta James' classic song - At Last. Got me thinking about the parallels in the life of these two amazing women of  music.

Next we have The Avett Brothers with a song from the Four Thieves Gone called Left On Laura, Left on Lisa  which echoes the sentiment of the Nick Lowe song, All Men Are Liars.

And finally, come on you knew we couldn't let another day go by with another track from Band of Week alum's MAKAR's album Funeral Genius - So Slow is that song.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle - War of the Enzymes Mix

War of the Enzymes - you know that Decemberist's song, "You and me and the war of the enzymes."?  Eh, never mind...

So last night, I added a bunch of songs to the old MP3 player, but a few didn't get added for some reason, so I decided to "Rebuild" my database.  Seemed a harmless thing, but it turns out it wiped out the new playlists I had created.  Sooooo... this morning I tossed together a new playlist of the 20 songs that were successfully added last night, and they are all relatively new releases - I think and all new to me.

Noisetrade (which you really have to check out if you are a band or a fan of music... to be honest, I'm not sure how it works, but it seems to be a great way to connect great music to music fans... anyway, they aren't paying me, so....) recently offered up a couple of  Delta Spirits' EPs, and our first song is a track from that one called Gimme Some Motivation - which rocks out in a modern way.

Friends of the blog - Makar are back (two days in a row) with a another song from their Funeral Genius album - this one is called In the Know.

The Bang Bang Boogaloo compilation Beyond Beyond is Beyond is available today for general distribution. It contains a butt load of diverse tracks all generally falling under the psychedelic category.  This one features groovy, echoey vocals, fuzzy but strong guitars and a hand clapping beat.  It sounds like it could come from the '60s, but it doesn't sound dated.  This one is by a Detroit band called Outrageous Cherry and is called Unbalanced in the City.

My good friend Hayden Coleman just released a album (available on Bandcamp) of beats from 2007. The album is called From '07: The Beat Tape - H.C. is a connoisseur of hip hop and he knows his stuff.  That much is evident in this beat called Bossa Nova Nuestra. Rumor has it, he makes a pretty good milkshake, too.

Finally, Charles Manson stole this song from the Beatles, U2 stole it back and now The Shake have taken it out on extended loan.  Helter Skelter here is a live cut recorded live at Maxwell's. ===========================================================================
