E2TG 3/11/2020 - More about an Artist - It's a Miracle Mix (Day Like This Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Continued from yesterday:

I promised more about the David Olney Celebration of Life because I felt like I had to end yesterday's post abruptly due to time constraints, but to be honest, I'm not sure what else there is to say.  There was definitely some extra shadows hanging over the night - with the effects of the previous week's tornado and the news of the passing of songwriter Eric Taylor coming just before the event - along with the Corona virus concerns...

The performances were all moving and the speakers were excellent.  It struck me that David has a way of really connecting with people - this despite his sometimes aloof nature. (At least that is my take).  The first dozen or so times I met David, we were sure what to say to each other. (not an unusal state for me).  When he started with WXNA, he would always talk to me about the radio station.

Eventually, I was fortunate enough to have him perform at one of my E2TG Anniversary Residencies and then later he read some sonnets and haiku at a reading event, I helped put together. The David Olney I experienced in those moments were echoed back to me again and in through the speakers. The brilliance mixed with a child-like wonder mixed with a weary cynicism mixed with a genuine love of music, art, and writing and the people who create those things.

I loved hearing R.B. Morris read some of Olney's haiku and then perform one of David's songs a cappella.  I loved Brock Zeman's song he wrote for David and the accompanying story.  I loved the version of The Women Across the River (I temporarily can't remember the name of the performers and my program is at home). Anne McCue's This Side or the Other was breath-taking. Malcom Holcombe's fiery performance of Deeper Well... and on and on..

It was most of all - the people - people united in our love and admiration for David Olney.  Mary Sack talked about the first time she saw David play, and I do think every person in that room could remember the first time they saw David Olney perform (it was a show at The 5 Spot for me), and how everything changed from that point on.

Wednesday Morning Shuffle:

We used to call Wednesday "Wild Wednesday" at E2TG.  We don't anymore, but that's not say that we don't get wild on Wednesdays (or any day)

"It's a Miracle" by George Felton (from Just as Long as It's Country)

I miss seeing George at The 5 Spot, but I am glad he got me his CD recorded several years back.

"Tell Me Something Someone" by Tommy Jones and the Troubadours (from The Truth Will Out)

"Fight at the End" by Chris J. Connolly (from Moving Maps)

We have been featuring this album for a couple of years, and this is the final track... side note, I finally learned to spell Connolly right...

"I've Been Away Too Long" by FADES (from FADES EP)

A UK band which seems to be no more.  I could not find any videos or any internet presence. The only thing I could find was the e-mail submission from 2016. (No video or substitute in the playlist for this one).

"A Day Like This (Etta Bee)" by Nathan Bell  (from Er Gwaetha Pawb a Phopeth)

From a live recording made during a tour of Wales.

"Shovelheads" by Shriekback (from Why Anything? Why This?)

"The Moon Was" by Julie Christensen (from Soul Driver)

One of Christensen's pre-Nashville albums. What a voice.

"More" by Lori Kelley (from More)

No video of this song but a different song substituted. Lori Kelley is a Nashville singer-songwriter.  We have her latest album and have been featuring it of late.

"Dream Away" by Ryan Dillaha (from Closer to Better)

First listen to an album by Michigan based singer-songwriter who leads the band The Miracle Men.

"Sad Baby Wolf" by Sad Baby Wolf (from Electric Sounds)
A short-lived band - which we featured early on here at E2TG - formed from former members of The Shins. A different song by this band in the video playlist.

Featured Friday Morning Shuffle - Waiting For the Fall Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Well, we've made it to the end of another work week.  Sending good Father's Day wishes to all of the fathers and father figures. With special thoughts to those experiencing loss and/or pain when it comes to their fathers.

Week 3 of the Don Gallardo Residency at The 5 Spot.  Seriously folks, he has two more weeks. You do not want to miss seeing him.  The Cordovas opened the night, and they absolutely destroyed! They traded instruments, they harmonized... the music recalled a bunch of different bands (The Dead, The Band, The Everly Brothers and more) but it was all their own, too.

Don Gallardo and How Far West sounded amazing.  His forthcoming album, Hickory, will be a must hear. Pre-Sale begins July 8. The album drops July 22.

After that, I ended up at The Station Inn to witness the album release for Irene Kelley's latest bluegrass album, These Hills.  Heard some amazing music and met some really cool folks.  In a bit of a Nashville moment, Kelley's producer/guitar player was playing the guitar that was raffled off during Music City Roots on Wednesday night.  Glad to see and hear that the winner was someone who knew what to do with it.

ICYMI - I posted my review of Taylor Alexander's new EP, Real Good At Saying Goodbye.  You can read it HERE.

Also, just a reminder, the next Double Shot with Joe and Sue show will be broadcast tomorrow morning beginning at 11a.m. (Central Time) (for 2hrs).  The theme is "We've Got You Covered" (cover songs). This show was prerecorded.  We will be back live next Saturday June 25 when the theme will be "Our Favorite Years".  We can be heard at 101.5 FM (in Nashville) and streaming at WXNAfm.ORG .

Featured Friday Morning Shuffle - The Punk Will Always Be With Us Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Happy Friday!  Sue and I had our first Radio DJ training at WXNA, and I got to see the studio of the first time.  When I know more about an on-air date, I will definitely be posting about that here.

I am excited to announce that the line-up for the E2TG Anniversary Extravaganza has been set.  Look for the big reveal Monday morning (it may leaked sooner - so now would be a good time to double-check that you have "Liked" the Facebook Page.  It is going to be a good one, so go ahead and mark May 18 as "busy" on your calendar.

Tonight my plans include hanging out at The 5 Spot for the Tim Carroll Rock and Roll Happy Hour and then making my way to The Family Wash for the Mark Huff CD Release show with Jon Byrd opening up.  Good times...

Tomorrow is Record Store Day.  Make your plans accordingly....

Here are some of the songs we are featuring on E2TG....

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle - Suffered for Your Sanity Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

I had a fun time last night.  Jeff Blaney and band started a month long residency at The 5 Spot.  Renee Wahl was the special guest the first night. She was backed by Daniel Seymour and Patterson Barrett.  Her songs and her voice were as spectacular as always.  Jeff Blaney's band included Seymour, Justin Amaral, and Chuck Foster on keyboard.  They sounded great.

Before that show was over, I had the great opportunity (thanks Mary) to get a sneak peak at the newly renovated 12th and Porter which is set for some Grand Opening shows this weekend with shows by Chuck Mead and Humming House.  The venue had a long history in Nashville, and it was good to see it ready to open once again. The free food and drinks were nice, too.

Back to The 5 Spot in time to catch the tail end of the beginning of the Whiskey and Women night with Michaela Anne.  Also on the bill, Joanna Barbara, Lauren Farrah, and Jesse Lafser.   Quite an amazing night of music.

Tonight, The 5 Spot is the place again to settle in for the night...  It is night one of another residency, this one featuring the great Paul Burch and the WPA Ballclub. Burch was one of the artists who helped to revitalize lower Broadway in Nashville in the early 90s. Burch and the WPA are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year with the release of Meridian Rising (about the life of Jimmie Rodgers) on Plowboy Records (featuring Jon Langford, William Tyler, Billy Bragg, and Tim O'Brien).  This residency is a don't miss kind of Nashville event. Special guest tonight is another of Nashville's finest songwriters, Kevin Gordon!

A last minute cancellation set the stage for a pretty killer late night show featuring 2014 E2TG Artist of the year, Darrin Bradbury; 2015 E2TG Artist of the Year, Jon Latham; Chris Watts, Elli Perry, and Buck N Stuff (a Buck Owens tribute band that features East Nashville stalwarts, Adam Kurtz, Cameron Carrus, and Lemuel Hayes).

I am looking forward to tonight!

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle - Joy and Sorrow Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

It's my birthday, and I'll cry if I want to...

My Birthday Week continues.  Last night included two stops along the way.  Week 2 of the Jason Ringenberg January Jam residency rolled on... This week guest was Peter Cooper with Chuck Mead joining Jason and Peter for a rendition of The Louvin Brothers classic, "The Christian Life".  Ringenberg really seems to be enjoying this residency - I know I sure am... Next week's guest is Tommy Womack!

From there, I headed to Mad Donna's Loft where I caught the tail end of Simon Reid's set which sounded great, and then witnessed two rocking sets from the always awesome Renee Wahl (who will be releasing some new music soon!) and Brian Langlinais (who will also be releasing some new music soon!). Both Renee and Brian were backed by top notch bands.

Now the "crying": two late nights in a row has worn me out, but I will press on... tonight, the fine folks at The Basement East were kind enough to schedule the grand opening of their new Pub for my birthday.  So, I will be hanging out there this evening. The party begins at 6:00 with some awesome folks doing wicked cool covers beginning at 8:00.

On to the shuffle:
