A new Friday brings a new Featured Friday Playlist.  Please check it out. This is also Bandcamp Friday - so if you discover some new (or old) music on Spotify, it is a good day to see if it is available on Bandcamp and throw some love that way. 

This week's playlist features the usual mix of old favorites and new (to us) artists. Plus, a couple of new projects from some old favorites. 

If you are in Nashville, it is a good weekend for tributes - Dee's has an epic Gram Parsons tribute tonight, and tomorrow night is the annual Last Waltz benefit at The Beast with many E2TG favorites taking part.

And just like that, we have reached the end of another week, and that means Featured Friday is back and that means, we have a brand new Featured Friday Playlist - this week's playlist includes mostly songs/albums released this week and last week as well as the usual songs from the last month or so that just reached our ears over the past two weeks.  Let's go!

Last night, I had the opportunity to check out the new Eastside Bowl - which for those of you who don't know is a new bowling alley, music venue, restaurant in Madison.  Last night's event was a multi-media event - They Came to Rock! - an alien music extravaganza - that was entertaining and fun. 

The music featured Anne McCue, Jamie Rubin, and others - plus guest Brian Wright. Featuring songs by Wright, Dave Coleman and more. Plus Wild Pony Telisha was part of the dance crew.

Friday Morning Music Shuffle - Be Careful Mix

It was a frosty morning, and we've reached that time of year when every sunrise and every sunset seem to be competing to be the most amazing and awe-inspiring.  This morning I was accompanied by a few great instrumental tracks and a couple of songs with words which flowed over me and took me out of myself.  It's Morning and time to Shuffle...

Today we have songs by: 1. A jazz legend 2. A Concord California dark, bluesy rock band 3.  The great-nephew of another jazz legend who was the wife of still another jazz legend 4.  A Nashville based super-duo and 5.  A Brooklyn-based troubadour who navigates the emotional landscape across a promised land laced with pitfalls and landminds

Let's proceed. Shall we?


Charlie Parker is an iconic figure of the jazz age.  He died in 1955 at the young age of 34, but his music and his legacy live on.  Today, we have Hot Blues a faster and (yes) hotter take on his well known Cool Blues. The song is featured in the opening sequence of the 1971 Louis Malle film Murmur of the Heart - right before Laurent shoplifts a Charlie Parker record.  Which lead me to the observation/generalization, "The French love Jazz, but they don't like to pay for it." (see the film Diva for further support of this axiom).

 Featured Artist The Chaw - the Concord, California dark, blues rock band are up next with the instrumental Campaigning Man from their self-titled debut.

I'm running out of time, so I will be quick with the rest of the shuffle - no reflection on the awesome music...

Flying Lotus is the stage name of Stephen Ellison who is the great-nephew of jazz pianist Alice Coltrane who was the wife of John Coltrane.  Flying Lotus makes cool, electronic-based music.  Today we have Putty Boy Strut from his latest release Until the Quiet Comes.

 

Featured Artists Sugar and the Hi Lows (by the way, I use "and" instead of the ampersand because for some reason - at least on my browser, blogger does funky things with the ampersand) as I was saying Sugar and the Hi Lows (awesome singer-songwriters Amy Stroup and Trent Dabbs) are one of our Featured Artists.  Today we have See it For Yourself from their self-titled album.  They also have a new Christmas album out.

 

The shuffle ends with another amazing song from the Brooklyn troubadour, Christopher Paul Stelling (also a Featured Artist).  Strange Darkness is from his album Songs of Praise and Scorn.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle - An Ordinary Guy Mix

Another example of life handing you pickles and being able to make burgers or something... any way, since we last spoke life has happened and as a result there was no Morning Shuffle yesterday. Last night, we created a quick and awesome Smart Playlist from the good folks at Apple.  Say what you will, they know how to develop a damn fine Smart Playlist....  unfortunately, I ran out of time to post about the list and now it's time for a new shuffle but I wanted to share the first two songs from that Smart Playlist:

Our good friends, The End Men with Build it Up, the song that started it all for us.  2013 is looking to be the year of The End Men - a new album due in or around February 2013 and more to come.

One of several of my favorite Bowie songs, Suffragette City from The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle - Zone One Mix

Well, well, well... it looks like we have one more day of Indian Summer here in Nashville before winter sets in.  Also, it is weird when there are still stars out when I'm pulling the car around in the morning.  When does the time go back to normal?


So, we have a good shuffle which includes a few bands who are new to Ear2theGround and a cover of a classic and much covered song:

The Chaw are a dark and bluesy rock band from Concord, California. They are about to drop their first full-length album (self-titled). The album comes out November 6 (so after you vote go buy the album).  We have had the chance to get a sneak peak, and this is a good one. Today we have Everything Wrong.

The band is stream two songs from the new album at Bandcamp where you will also find the band's EP available for Free Download.

I met Diana Lawrence at the Americana Music Fest. She released an EP called To: Aging Children back in August, and we have the beautiful pop-folk ballad, Praise for the Days.  This is pop-folk that reminds me of Joni Mitchell and Anna and Kate McGarrigle. Stirring and grand and delicate.

Girl Scouts are a Philadelphia band who play recklessly, emotionally charged indie rock with abandon. They are tons of fun. They released a split EP with New Hampshire/Connecticut band Old Gray.  We have Buh Buh Bubbaram today... "Go Home!"

We don't do much Jam band here at Ear to the Ground.  I guess it's just not my thing really... but, I couldn't pass on this cover of the Beatles' Helter Skelter by Gov't Mule featuring the great Audley Freed.  The song comes from the three-disc Mulennium Live Album.
