Last night was one of those nights that reminds me why I love Nashville so much. Bill Lloyd did an early show at The 5 Spot with a great band doing classic and new songs - both those he wrote and choice covers. He will be back next week and then again for the final Tuesday in November.
Then, I hung around for Derek Hoke's $2 Tuesday. One of the absolute best things this town has to offer. $2 cover, $2 Yazoo beer, consistently great music, and an awesome hang with the coolest of people.
Seeing Rayvon Pettis and Megan Palmer together was a highlight. And Derek Hoke and his band were as always fantastic.
The audience was filled with a who's who of great artists. If I believed in namedropping, I would tell you that Aaron Lee Tasjan, Bobby Bare Jr., Zach Schmidt, Jon Byrd, Jon Latham, Joe Fletcher and more were there. But, like Wynonna told me when I met her a couple of years ago, namedropping is unseemly.
Seriously, I had some inspiring and motivating conversations, and so what if I am really tired today....
Add on the encouraging election results from different places, and I am actually feeling pretty good today.
It is Wednesday and we get "Wild" on Wednesday. Let's shuffle:

Ah, Thursday!
Last night was the opening night of the Jason Ringenberg residency at The 5 Spot in East Nashville. Ringenberg is the Jason from Jason and the Scorchers (the seminal Nashville band beginning in the early 1980s). He is also the Jason from Farmer Jason (host of a PBS kids show and creator of albums for children). His special guest for week 1 was Webb Wilder (another quintessential figure on the 80s Nashville music scene).
Playing to a pretty packed house, Ringenberg and Wilder really seemed to be enjoying themselves. Jason opened with "Halcyon Times" - the title track from a Scorchers album before turning the stage over to Webb Wilder who moved through a set that encompassed his long career. Including, classic Webb Wilder songs like "How Long Can She Last" and "Human Cannonball".
Ringenberg's set included several classic Scorcher's songs as well as songs from his solo albums, and a cover of "Trail of Tears" by the great Georgia band, Guadalcanal Diary.
Wilder then joined Ringenberg to close out the night by each singing a song by the other. Jason sang, "Sitting Pretty" from 1991's Doo Dad and Webb sang "Shop it Around" from the first full-length Scorchers album Lost and Found. They then performed a Farmer Jason song before closing the evening with a really awesome version of Buddy Holly's "Rave On".
Tonight, I am going to check out Joey Kneiser and his band at The East Room. His new album, The Wildness is getting rave reviews.

Bands of the Week 2011 - Part II - Weeks 9-17
We continue our recap of the 2011 Bands of the Week. Reminder: Please be sure to vote in the First Annual Reader's Poll for Band of the Year.
Week 9: The Mobbs - an honest to goodness - British band with a punk attitude. They play it fast and nasty and it makes me want to walk around saying "bloody hell" all the time. Well here check out this video:
Week 10: Mikey Wax - is a singer and songwriter - Long Island born. He recently released a new album Constant Motion which hit #6 on the iTunes Singer-Songwriter chart. Here's a video for his song In Case I Go Again which has been viewed over a half a million times on You Tube:
Week 11: Elika - are an indie band from Brooklyn. Their sound features astonishing vocals set atop a complex yet lovely combination of guitar, synth, bass and drum machine. Check out Elika's video for their song Summer here:
Week 12: Clepto - is a punk band with a definite Middle Eastern influence. The band formed in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 2000 and has since relocated to Canada. The play it hard and nasty and the music is not for the faint of heart. For the unfaint of heart it's a jolly good time.... Check out this video: NOTE: I screwed up on the reader's poll and mispelled the band's name. I know the band's name. It was a typo. So if you like Clepto please vote for Cleto.
Week 13: Simon Fagan - is an Irish singer/songwriter. He has a unique voice and a great sound. Look for a new EP coming soon. Meanwhile check out this video of one of our favorite songs, Something I Don't Know
Week 14: The Walla Recovery - a cello-folk rock quartet from Texas. They write moving and beautiful songs. Here is a video of The Walla Recovery performing a cover of Coldplay's Til Kingdom Come:
Week 15: Lost Romance - are a New Jersey based rock band. They play expansive music which lives up to the vast history of New Jersey music. Here's a favorite of ours, Top of the World, performed live at The Saint in Asbury Park:
Week 16: Sealight - is a French/Australian band. Their sound combines acoustic and electronic elements to make a beautiful soundscape. They recently released their debut EP - Dead Letters which was reviewed here at Ear to the Ground. Here is the title track from the EP:
Week 17: The Jinxes - are a melodic folk-pop band from Monterey, California. They have a rich creative spirit and a ear for sweet melodies. Here is a video of a song, we love called Migration:
That's it for now.... Stay tuned... Part III is coming soon. And be sure to vote.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle - Bowl of Cherries Mix
So, I tuned into the AMA's last night, and I have to say, I was confused... until I realized that it was not the Americana Music Awards. But, I pressed on because I heard that KMFDM was doing to close the show, and that seemed such a weird left field kind of thing that I had to watch. Needless to say, I need to pay more attention to what I hear....
Rainy Monday here in Nashville. I overslept, came home after dropping my daughter off and decided to nap because I had a dentist appointment at 8:00. Set my phone alarm for 7:26p.m. and my wife woke me up at 7:55. Got to my 8:00 appointment at 8:15.
Got to the work parking lot around 9:40 - had to park in the far lot - which I expected and by this time, I was in serious need of good music. I shuffled a quick and dirty and random playlist I had created last week and once again randomness paid off...
First off was Something I Don't Know by Band of the Week alumnus Simon Fagan.

(Click on album cover to purchase and download the song)
Next up, the shuffle spit out the lovely A Beautiful Girl by the ubiquitious Band of the Week alumni Ubiquity Machine. Check out and download the song below.
01 A Beautiful Girl by Ubiquity Machine
Song #3 comes from the our neighbors to the North. Bruce Cockburn has been making music for a long time, and Wondering Where the Lions Are is one of this best.

(Click on album cover to purchase and download the song)
The final song comes from Nashville, TN based super-couple Buddy and Julie Miller. God's Wing'ed Horse is a heavenly bit of music.
