Today is the last day to check out this week's Featured Friday Playlist. We will have a new list shortly after midnight or maybe a little later if I fall asleep before midnight.

I have been really proud of these lists and the diversity of the music from all over the world. It is fun to hear the mix of music. I am grateful to get to do this and to get the positive feedback I receive. Thanks to the artists and publicists who send me music. I get a lot of e-mails, but I will never complain about that.

26. "Back 'till I'm Gone" by Leon Majcen

Title track of the new album from NYC by way of Tampa singer-songwriter Leon Majcen. I really dig the sound of his music and I especially like his rich vocals.  He donated all of the proceeds from the pre-sale of his album to the Southern Poverty Law Center - who are dedicated to tracking and identifying hate groups.

27. "Reawakened 2020" by Patrick Ames

A powerful re-imagining of a song that was originally written on inauguration day 2017.  A stirring call to action - with that action being to vote.

28. "Oyo" by Kids Love Surf

A duo that came together during quarantine from the southern coast of England. Poppy electronic sounds - I dig it. 

29. "Any Kind of Angel" by Jenny Reynolds

Long time Austin-based singer-songwriter Jenny Reynolds with the title track from her brand new album which was produced by Mark Hallman and Andre Moran.  The album features Jaimee Harris, Betty Soo and more. This is a wonderful album, and a great addition to this week's playlist.

30. "More Than Heaven" by Marina Matiss

Next, we have a brand new single from Barcelona based singer-songwriter Marina Matiss.  Lovely music. Matiss speaks eight different languages.  Her next single is going to sung in Spanish. 

31. "Kelpius" by Sylvette

Last, but certainly not least, we have the new single from 5-piece art rock band Slyvette - who are from Manchester. The single was produced by Phil Cunningham (New Order) and his Bad Lieutenant band mate Jake Evans.  A delightful change of pace and a great ending to this expansive and diverse playlist.

We have an incredible line-up featuring David Olney,  Rod Picott, Luke Powers, Rebecca Weiner Tompkins, and yours truly. All but me are incredible musicians and songwriters, but for this show - they will let their words speak for them without music.  I will be reading from The Drift plus some selections from a forthcoming book.   FACEBOOK EVENT HERE!


Whew! It's Friday!  It's been a bit of whirlwind week for me. I moved on Wednesday (I am beyond grateful to have such great friends - a solid crew of wonderful people who made the move as painless as possible). I'll be unpacking and decorating the new place for weeks, but I'm at least settled. I had two meetings for WXNA - big stuff is happening.

We close the week with a pretty cool Featured Friday shuffle - a couple of first listens, some returning favorites, some big names, and a pretty diverse mix.  Let's go!

Tomorrow night is one of those crazy Nashville night's for music. Crazy good that is... Starting with the Mark Robinson Band at The 5 Spot at 6pm.  It's Mark's birthday so you know it's going to be fun one.  Later, George Terry McDonald (aka George Trouble) and Megan Palmer will be playing at Radio Cafe.  This is one you do not want to miss. The action shifts to The Basement East for a cool tribute show to Drive-by Truckers which benefits Nuçi’s Space.  Jon Latham and his band will be the house band covering Decoration Day while The Big Dumb will be the house band for the "greatest hits" part of the show.  The special guests are really pretty special.  Whew! I'm tired already.


Whew!  This week has been rather brutal for me. But it is Friday.  On Friday, we have the Featured Friday shuffle which is a shuffle of our "New Music" playlist which consists mainly of music submitted to E2TG is various ways relatively recently.

Another week bites the dust... it's been a challenging one, to be sure.

I'm very excited about all of the awesome new music that has come my way, and I am cooking up some exciting things. Keep coming back!

Well, I guess you could say we are in the home stretch of the 2017 Earie Award and actually for 2017 for E2TG overall.  In so many ways, 2017 has been a very difficult year for myself and many others. I guess when I look back, I am trying to focus on the good moments, the new friendships, the accomplishments (my own and others), and hope despite the fear.

Anyway, after today, we have five more shuffles and five more days of Earies. The Golden Earies (Artist(s) and/or Band(s) of the Year) will be posted between Christmas and New Year's Day.

I just wrote and erased a really long, convoluted rant about something that I really couldn't articulate well. Suffice it to say, human beings are complicated creatures and interactions between humans can be even more complicated.

That and this: the best music is that music that moves you and inspires you and energizes you and motivates you and brings some semblance of joy to your life. I know what music does that for me, and if another kind of music does that for someone else, than who am I to criticize that.  Granted, I have been known to dog certain artists or styles of music, but I think I was wrong. I may actively hate a certain artist or style of music. I may sound fake or boring or meaningless to me, and that is fine. But if that music means something to someone, if it moves them, inspires them....


Anyway, it is Tuesday (second to the last day of my work week). Time to see what is "Trending" on E2TG

Once again, I find myself feeling overwhelmed by the world and "humankind's inhumanity to fellow humans"... and I am also overwhelmed by the divides we see - especially (as far as I can tell) in this country - between people. I see all sorts of layers and causes and symptoms of this problem, but for right now, I don't see any or much hope of a solution.

Does social media exacerbate the problem or merely amplify it?  Comment sections on any even vaguely political post are depressing as hell.  And, just about anything and everything is at least potentially political.  Food, sports, weather, fast food cups, innocuous holiday greetings... all political and by definition divisive in these times. And I want to blame it all on the OTHER side- I really do... but... THE OTHER SIDE is part of the problem.  Everything seems to viewed as a one or the other, all or nothing proposition.  Shop a particular store, well, you must be (fill in the blank).  Watch a particular sport... you get the idea. 

I don't feel like I know a whole lot about much of anything, but in my life, I have ascertained that almost everything is more complex than it seems to be... especially if people are involved. I guess it is a sort of human nature to put people or things into categories... good, evil, progressive, conservative, pro, anti... people rarely ever fit neatly into boxes we design - especially if there are only ever two choices. 

The point I am trying to make is that this either/or thinking tends to back people into a corner. It says you can't be this one thing without being all these other things which get conflated with that one thing. Faced with that, people dig in and end up feeling the need to support something that they might otherwise never support. 

I already said, I don't see a solution in sight - at least not an easy one. All I know to do is to watch and check myself when I find myself exhibiting this either/or mentality or projecting all sorts of things onto people because of one particular aspect of who they are. 

That and music (although that can and has been politicized)... for me music heals a part of me that is damaged and in pain.  For me it is certain songs, artists, styles of music.  For someone else, it may be something else (that I may not like or understand) and that is okay. If music (any music) does that for someone - then who the hell am I to criticize that?

It's a misty, overcast raining Monday in Nashville.   And the world is a harsh and bitter place sometimes.  Here's some music that helped make it a little better this morning for me....

Another week... the last full week of October. A rainy, gloomy day in Nashville with cooler weather in the forecast.  I've been running behind all day, but I got a few minutes to write this.

Looks like a busy week for live music in Nashville... including Saturday at Grimey's Rocktoberfest to benefit WXNA.  Details to follow. 

Here we go with our Monday shuffle - for now, we are shuffling from the "New Music" playlist... trying to get through as many of those songs as we can before the end of the year.
