About 2/3 of the way through American Aquarium's set at The Basement East last night, I had a thought. I was thinking about all the people (many of them people about my age or older or younger) who say things like "Music these days sucks." or something and then they will usually compare some classic band from an earlier era to some disposable pop star of the moment (as if there have not always been disposable pop stars). My thought, my message to those people, is turn off top 40 radio and go out and see live music. I know I am very spoiled by living in Nashville, but I also know that there is great music (crossing all genres and styles) being made every night and every day all around world. Cordovas opened for American Aquarium, and as I have come to expect from that band, they totally destroyed. Seriously, Cordovas are a band I will never get tired of seeing live.
American Aquarium leader B.J. Barham has gone through some major changes in the last two and half years (which is about the time I first really got into the band). Among those changes was the departure of his entire band. He has a newly formed band, and they were incredible last night. Most of the band comes from Texas (Barham is a North Carolina native) and also includes Nashville's own Adam Kurtz (Buck n Stuff) on pedal steel. I may be bias, being a big Buck n Stuff fan, but I think Kurtz was one of the stars of the night. As of Barham, he seemed energized and he seemed to be enjoying himself - bouncing around the stage and engaging with the band and the audience. He speaks hard truths with love, and explores his own life with honesty.
This show came after taking in the early show at The 5 Spot - which local Sarah Clanton and a band that included the bass player from The Barefoot Movement. Clanton plays the cello and I had just recently been turned on to her by my DJ partner Sue. After Clanton's set, Heather Mae from D.C. took the stage. She injected some much needed positive energy into my soul. I am a fan, now. Turns out she knows my friends in FuzzQueen - proving just how small the music world is, Tom Goss closed that early show, and I dug his music, too.
I hate that I missed Benchmarks at The 5 Spot - as it turned out, I probably could have seen most of their set.... also last night E2TG 2015 Artist of the Year Jon Latham made his debut on Music City Roots with his killer band. I am looking forward to catching the video of this.
Anyway, from my point of view, the state of music is just fine - the business/money side of it may be a different story, but that is a topic for another time.
Today, we jump back into our exploration of E2TG history. E2TG began in May 2011. A vast majority of my posts are the monring shuffles like this one. The basic premise is, "Hey, I heard some cool music this morning on my way to work, let me tell you about." So, let me....

Well Americana Music Association week in kicking into high gear here in Nashville. So many incredible musicians in town, official and unofficial showcases and shows and whatnot everywhere you go. Music that represents the pretty diverse collection of genres and subgenres that fall loosely or tightly under the big Americana umbrella... "It's a big enough umbrella, but it's always me who ends up getting wet."
Forever, swimming against the wind or pissing into the stream or whatever, Ear to the Ground presents a shuffle which includes some 1950s Portuguese Fado music, some 1970s Afro-jazz from Nigeria, a 90s lo-fi band from Olympia Washington, some awesome alternative, jazz, funk, electronic music from Philly, a 90s Rock band from Knoxville, along with some other great stuff which should or could fit in nicely at Americana Fest. Shall we?

I just recently found out that the five year old daughter of Joseph "Taco" Russell is fighting a courageous battle with childhood cancer. #E2TG sends all kinds of love and good thoughts and prayers to the entire Taco Land family. Friday Morning Music Shuffle - Ow Mix

Well, we muddled through another week.... It's time for me to dive head long into creating E2TG version 3.0 (we are currently on 2.1) - I'm not sure exactly what that will entail, but it will be awesome - I bet. There may be a release 2.2 in the meantime, but maybe not... whatever, if you have ideas of what I can do to make E2TG better, now would be a good time to send them my way. I'll either use the ideas or I won't - it's the cool thing of writing your own blog... :-) But, my philosophy since day one has been to be open to whatever comes along. So wherever we go, I see my job is just to keep this thing between the lines... (only occasionally crossing)...
Whatever, the shuffle speaks... and we must listen... Jump to it if you dare...

Ug.. it's been a month or more since I posted... due to circumstances yada yada...
I hope to be back up to full speed ahead soon, but I need to dust off the cobwebs to share some things - some long overdue.

Introducing: The E2TG Hall of Fame ----- Ta Da!
You may be asking, "WTF?" Basically, it comes down to this: My blogging consultant told me I need to start being more controversial to attract more readers to my site. Whenever, I see posts about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, they always seem to attract highly opinionated comments. So, I thought if I came up with my own Hall of Fame, it might create controversy and angry comment wars which might "go viral" as the kids say.*
*All of the proceeding is true except for the following: I don't have a blogging consultant. I rarely read comment wars about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the only thing likely to "go viral" over here is an actual virus.
Really, I got to thinking about the artists I consider E2TG featured artist. When I began writing E2TG way back in the spring of 2011, I began naming a Band of the Week just about every week. I did this for a about year, before switching to a featured artist designation - wherein I would name ten or so "featured artists" every month and put them in "heavy rotation" for the remainder of that month. That carried on for just over six months. Since, then I keep featuring new music, but I haven't really been very organized about recognizing those bands. So... I decided to take stock - at this random point in E2TG history and go back and formally recognize all of the bands that I consider part of the E2TG family. To do so, I decided to use the TAG "cloud" on the sidebar and begin with the most tagged bands and work my way down. So, for the near future, I am going to name three, two or one band every day to join the E2TG HofF. It's a purely honorary title - as currently it does not come with a cash prize nor is there an actual Hall.
I am going to create and maintain a Sidebar linked Page for the Hall of Fame artists - with videos, songs, links, an on-going web-store and more. It's still under construction, so will update when I have a Page set up.
So without much more ado, E2TG is pleased to announce our inaugural class of Hall of Fame inductees:
1. THE END MEN from Brooklyn, NY
2.TACO LAND - from San Antonio, TX
3. SKELETONS IN THE PIANO from Saratoga Springs, NY

You know it is almost a literal statement that you can hardly walk a block in Nashville without walking past a songwriter. But, it is a rare and wonderful occasion to be able to see three amazing songwriters sharing songs for free in the middle of a weekday.
Today, a mostly mellowish mix of music that just kind of feels right...

Friday Morning Music Non-Shuffle - Lucky Dog Barking at a Jukebox Mix

Well once again, fate, circumstance, procrastination and mysterious forces beyond my control or understanding have combined to lead me to this very point.... namely, as I've mentioned several times, I am way over due to for a wrap-up of April. As you may recall, at the end of March I did a big ole summary for the first three months on 2013, gave a shout out to old friends who made new music and welcomed a few new bands into the Ear to the Ground Family. I resolved at that time to try my best to do this same exercise monthly.
April was an amazing month for new music. From our old friends, we covered new albums by Skeletons in the Piano, Taco Land, Killing Kuddles, The Danbury Lie, The Imperial Rooster and Black Jake and the Carnies. - I've probably forgotten some, and if so, I sincerely apologize.
Now on to our new additions to the Ear to the Ground family (again family is my designation and no consent is required...)
