E2TG 8/6/2021 - Featured Friday - Busted World Mix (Peeno Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Before we get to our Featured Friday Playlist, we have a new non-Spotify single to feature - from E2TG favorite Mighty Joe Nolan.  The Detroit native and long-time Nashville singer-songwriter, journalist, podcaster, and much more - just released his tribute to drive-in movies on Bandcamp - just in time for the relaunch of Bandcamp Fridday - where the platform waives their fees.

Here is some more about this new single: "Back to the Drive-In" is the second single off Mighty Joe Nolan's upcoming plague-times song cycle, American Guillotine. "Back to the Drive-In" celebrates the unexpected revival of "movies in cars" with this rock 'n' roll tribute to B movies and American summertime culture.

"I went to my first drive-in movie when I was a little kid in Detroit. We saw Peter Pan and Escape from Witch Mountain. But when you're a kid the drive-in isn't just about movies. It's also about the swingsets and see-saws, the concession stand - we even had a fireworks show during the intermission of the double feature. Drive-ins coming back during the pandemic was a weird and hopeful thing during a miserable time. The song is a tribute to monster movies and sci-fi films, but it's also filled with lots of visceral memories from my earliest experiences of 'movies in cars.'"

The song's stripped-down sound - like all of the tracks on American Guillotine - reflects the album's isolated production during various levels of social distancing. The single's spare arrangement shouts out vintage hip hop as well as 1950s rock 'n' roll, and Nolan's singular gift for lyric writing brings the cinematic setting flickering to life:

Also out today on Bandcamp, a new album from bassist Cameron Carrus who recently moved from Nashville to Brooklyn.  Odd is a collection of instrumentals with some special guests like Adam Kurtz, Julia Blair, and Rich Ruth.  Check it out below:

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle - Ding-Dong Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

First of all I have to give a huge shout out to everyone who helped make the inaugural The Finger and Ear to the Ground Presents: The Most Dangerous Game Show a huge success! Big props go to John McCollum and Darrin Bradbury without whom this would not have been possible.  Thanks to everyone who came out.  Thanks to The Building. Thanks to DJ Warbles for spinning great tunes between sets.  To Russell Thompson, Lindsay Ellyn, George Terry McDonald, and our very special guest Bob Dylan I mean Darrin Bradbury.  Let's do this thing again!

We have a short but sweet shuffle. Only five songs thanks to the seventeen minute opening track... Jump

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle - Paint the Daytime Black Mix

Good morning, my review of last nights throw down at 3rd and Lindsley with Dave Pahanish and Panfish, Leroy Powell, and George Shingleton is live on No Depression.  In other news, sleep is totally overrated.

Short on time and it's not Thursday so I can't do three word Thursday, so let's do this thing!

Wide Open Wednesday Shuffle - Summertime Thing Mix

Trying a new thing here at Ear to the Ground.... every Wednesday (or at least this Wednesday... or maybe some Wednesday's) I am going to Shuffle up all the songs in my phone's memory and see what happens...  Usually, the Morning Shuffles come from a playlist called "Current Stuff" which includes... well current stuff and basically all the recent adds plus some random stuff to keep things interesting.  Songs are moved off of the playlist as they are featured and new music is added all the time (as memory allows).  Beyond that playlist, I have approximately 4,000+ songs stored in my phone at any given time. As you might expect, it's a weird collection of some really interesting music that I've collected in various ways over the years.  I have to say, the fact that Mary Gauthier and Chuck Prophet were the first two songs that came up... I am feeling optimistic.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle - A Few of My Favorite Things 2013 Mix Part Four

And on we go...

Just in case you  joined us late, we are looking back on some of our favorite music from 2013, and doing it as only Ear to the Ground would...  I created a Playlist with favorites released in 2013.  2013 was a great year for music.  Many of your favorite E2TG artists released new music this year, some new favorites were "discovered", and there was even some notable releases from artists you frequently read about on those "Brand X" music blogs.  All of those and maybe even more are included in the Playlist.  We've been shuffling through that playlist all week, and we will continue until the end of the year (and maybe a day or two more).

Let's get to it, and see what Mr. Shuffle has brought up today... shall we?

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle - Strings Mix

Time marches on.... we have a ton of cool tunes and not as much time as I would like...

First off - here is an updated version of yesterday's "Retreat" Mix video playlist - we received a link for the New Victorians to the video for "Letting Go" so we substituted that for the song we originally included:

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle - Run Boy Mix

As I write this, I hear thunder behind me and the gentle, almost soothing sounds of car tires moving across wet city streets. It's August 20, 2013, and I am alive, and though not perfect by any means, life is good.

Some days I want more out of life, but for me that is just a normal state of being. The key for me is to find peace in the now without thinking this is where I will and must always be.

As of this date, I have been writing Ear to the Ground for 2 years and about 3 months. The blog has not made me rich or very famous, but I consider it a huge success nonetheless. Because of the blog, I've been fortunate enough to meet some incredible and talented and just generally good people. I heard tons more music than I would have had I not written the blog. Every so often, I see one of my quotes in the promotional material of a band I've written about.

I'm not sure why I'm writing all this right now, but it seemed like as good a time as any to remind myself why I do this.

This morning brought an interesting mix of music.  Let's get to it - after the jump...

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle - Previewing the Purview of Perfection Mix

Propane, Storm Clouds, and Custom Hitches by JWM 7/10/2013

I have a ton of ground to cover and as per usual not as much time I was would like... so forsaking the pleasantries....

Today, we begin with three previews of upcoming releases.

Let's begin with Grow the long awaited solo effort by Spencer Livingston of The Alternates (who were one of our early Bands of the Week about two years ago).  Grow is due out next Tuesday July 16, 2013.  The album features guests like Butch Norton (Lucinda Williams, Eels) and Kenneth Pattengale (Milk Carton Kids).  One of the things that first caught my ear with The Alternates was Livingston's super rich vocals, and he is in full voice on what I've had the chance to hear so far from the new record. American Songwriter premiered the first video from the album "Have a Little Faith".   Spencer is heading East for a run of shows before returning to California for a couple of shows at the beginning of August.  You can grab all his tour dates here.

Easy Getting By is the Debut EP from Glen Falls, NY band The Quick and The Dead.  It will be released on July 26.  The Quick and The Dead features our old friend Joey Mansman (Today is his birthday by the way  - so have a good one Joey) who we met through his other band Cosmonauts (who are supposed to be wrapping up their epic final album soon - from what I read). You may remember our interview and video premier of the Cosmonauts song Cold Harbor.  The Quick and The Dead offers up a more roots/Americana vibe, and based on what I've heard so far, it is pretty awesome.  I can't wait to hear the whole EP.  The first taste from Easy Getting By is called "Into the River"

Finally, we are very happy to present the first taste of Kalpa which is the new EP by Valued Customer.  The band is excited about this new music, and finally, we get our first hint at what all the excitement is about. We have to wait until July 17 for the full course of Kalpa, but the band have graced us with "Second Moon" as a Free Download over at Bandcamp (Name Your Own Price). The track is six minutes and 13 seconds of mind-blowing music and words. Valued Customer, as I have mentioned, are from Toronto. They are often weird, sometimes silly, but above all they are amazingly talented artists, and I mean that sincerely.  Here's a sample of lyric:
ugggy gotta alotta luv in his heartbeat
but i seen it all before, Koyaanisqatsi

I mean, hell, just the fact that they rhymed heartbeat and Koyaanisqatsi would be enough to sell me, but this isn't even the best moment. Ah, heck just judge for yourself..

We still have a shuffle to do, and not a lot of time.  JUMP then SHUFFLE

Monday Morning Music Shuffle - Ugly Moon Mix

Greetings.  After an extended Holiday weekend, Ear to the Ground is back with another slam, bang mix of music. During the recess, I've been busy adding songs to our rotating playlist from which the Morning Pre-Shuffle and Shuffle are drawn.

Today, we have a pretty decent mixture of old and new music which covers a variety of musical styles and genres.  Hope you enjoy it.  The Pre-shuffle kicks off right after the JUMP

"Doctor Visit" photo collage by JWM 6/27/13

Tomorrow is the Fourth of July here in the USA.  For the rest of you, well it's the Fourth of July, too unless you are across the International Date Line in which case tomorrow is the Fifth of July.  In any event have a great Fourth (or Fifth) of July.
