Featured Friday Playlist recap (part 5 - The End) (songs 22-25):
22. "Misunderstanding" by Creux Lies
First up today, we have the recent single from the Sacramento based dark pop/alt rock band. It is the first taste of their new album Goodbye Divine - which is due out this autumn.
23. "All My Faith" by The Nautical Theme
From the new EP Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed - by the Dayton, Ohio based duo. Great stuff.
24. "November Birthday" by Lightning Love
Lightning Love are an indie-pop band based in Ypsilanti, Michigan. They formed in 2007, and their debut album just got the reissue treatment thanks to Lost in Ohio Records. Today, we have the brief, instrumental title track to mark the reissue.
25. "Never Found a Way to Tame the Blues" by Jon Shain & FJ Ventre
We close out this week's shuffle with the title track from the recent album by North Carolina based and award-winning blues artist Jon Shain and his long time collaborator FJ Ventre. A wonderful song to close us out for the week.

Well, I wrote an extended bit below the Featured Friday Playlist - so I will just say... tune in tomorrow for a new Featured Friday and find your joy where you can!
And today, we wrap up our recap of the week's Featured Friday Playlist - just in time for tomorrow's unveiling of a whole new playlist. Songs 24-28
24. "Dyfodol" by Ci Gofod; Lloyd Bastian
As always, we like to end the weekly playlist on a high and interesting note, and this last segment sure starts us off in the right direction. Ci Gofod is a bedroom recording project based in Wales. Although he grew up in Wales, Ci Gofod (real name Jack) had never learned the Welsh language. He decided to learn using songwriting as a tool to learn the language. Dyfodol is his first Welsh language release - with more to come. Dyfodol means "future" and the song reflects the anxiety most of us feel about it.
25. "In the Unknown" by Nelss
Nelss was born in Portugal and now lives in Paris, France. He recorded this single - ahead of an EP called Moonlight in his home-studio in the City of Lights. The music falls into the synth-pop/disco area successfully blending genres to create a unique sound.
26. "A Feel" by Drumagick
Drumagick is considered Brazil's kings of drum 'n' bossa. This tragic brings some intergalactic vibes, and it is a great addition to our playlist.
27. "Coup de grace" by PXPRS
Next up, we have the debut single by this Bristol-London based trio. This is the rocking side of electronic music. It is jammed packed with noise and sounds that captured by attention. Look for a full album later this year.
28. "Baggage" by Phillip La Rosa
We close out this segment of music and this week's playlist with a song that packs a powerful emotional punch. Phillip La Rosa is a singer-songwriter based in Perth, Australia. The song is about broken people connecting by unpacking their baggage. A great ending to the playlist.
A final word. I hope everyone is enjoying our Featured Friday Playlist. I put a lot of thought and energy into putting the list together and then sharing a little bit about each song. First and foremost, if any of the music piques your curiosity, follow the artists on social media, share about the songs you like, if you are able buy some merch and/or physical copies of the music.
As I have shared before, the list in ordered in a way that is a little bit intentional (that word again) and a little bit arbitrary. Personally, I recommend you listen to the playlist on shuffle. The list is diverse enough that although not many people will dig everything on the list, there should be something there that anyone will like.
I don't know how to impart this, but my wish is that everyone will develop open minds and open hearts toward music. There is so much wonderful new music being made, and of course, we all have our all-time favorites that we go back to. I have always envisioned E2TG as a place for anyone interested to discover new music that is not driven by algorithms telling you what you might like. I enjoy stepping outside my comfort zone each week. Okay, after over nine years at this, my comfort zone when it comes to music is pretty darn big, but I am always looking to be challenged and to find something new.
Something I have said before, I cannot say that I like every artist or style of music that I feature equally, but I do believe it all has merit and deserves a chance to be heard. Along the way, I feature music that may already have a sizable following, but if you haven't heard it - then it is new and unknown to you (and me).

Well, it's July 3. Tomorrow is American Independence Day. I imagine many of us are not feeling much like celebrating. After all, our government has been hijacked by people who seem intent on destroying the basic principals on which this nation was founded... or at least that is how I feel about it. But, maybe it is important to celebrate...I've always had an uneasy relationship with the Fourth of July. There is a fine line between patriotism and jingoism. Right now, it is unclear if the American experiment is failing or just in the middle of a very difficult test. This year, I choose to celebrate the people who have and who are fighting for our freedom. All of our freedom. In the face of corruption and greed and fear and hatred and violence and boorish behavior and misogyny and homophobia - I celebrate those who practice and demonstrate love and compassion and acceptance.

We are officially into the second half of 2017. As I promised last week, I am continuing this week to shuffle from the "New Music" playlist. Next week, we will go back to our regularly scheduled programming. But, as a compromise, I have added a bunch of new music to the playlist...

Without a doubt, there is a lot of ugliness in the world, which is why it is so important to seek out and notice and acknowledge beauty as much as possible. Last night's Jon Latham benefit at The Basement East was teeming with beautiful moments. Featuring terrific solo sets from Sally Jaye, Rayvon Pettis, Brian Wright, Becca Mancari, and Peyton Parker to a scintillating full band set from Sadler Vaden. Jon's awesome band (Andrew Leahey, Sean Quinn, Raun Schultz, and Cory Nichols) played his debut album, Real Bad News in it's entirety with guests ranging from Darrin Bradbury's deliciously over-the-top reading of "Major Key" to Brian Wright and Sally Jaye's moving rendition of "Conversation at a Funeral". Top to bottom, great performances by some of Jon's friends who happen to be the cream of the crop of Nashville artists. The show ended with the band doing "Last in Line" from Jon's forthcoming album Lifers. Then, everyone who played and more took the stage for the title track of Lifers with Jon himself leading the way. Jon and his band closed the night with their version of Springsteen's "Darkness of the Edge of Town". The love and respect and beauty was impossible to miss.
Well, it is Tuesday, and that is when we shuffle up our "New Music" playlist. The fun thing about using the random shuffle function is you never know what it will bring up...

You know, I keep saying this is not political, but until some more G.O.P. people grow a spine and speak up against the insanity, it does feel political.... And by insanity, I specifically mean gross incompetence, flagrant and unabashed corruption, just to name a couple.

Yesterday was an eighteen plus hour day that left me more energized than tired (we shall see how I feel after lunch today) After work, I headed to Madison to record a future Double Shot show (to air May 6), then I went to Dee's where Tim Easton hosted Madison Guild Monday. Emma Berkey, Matt Haeck, Rayvon Pettis, Ariel Bui, Megan Palmer, Jon Latham, and more. Tim Easton closed the night joined by Aaron Lee Tasjan - before ALT performed two songs to close the night. (I know I left somebody out, too. Sorry.) I really fun hang. For those deep into the E2TG mythology, the first time I saw Aaron Lee Tasjan (and Tim Easton - I think) was back in 2014 at a 5 Spot Residency that Tim Easton was hosting. That was also the fateful day that I first met Darrin Bradbury in person.
It is Tuesday.... let's see what is Trending at E2TG according to the random shuffle function....

Featured Friday Morning Shuffle - Walt and Manute Mix

Well, E2TG doesn't have Kid Rock, Ted Nugent, or Sarah Palin, but we do have a hell of an impressive line-up for our May Residency at The 5 Spot in East Nashville. May will mark the 6 Year Anniversary of the beginning of Ear to the Ground. That fact blows my mind. The decision to start writing the blog was something that evolved over time - from posting my morning shuffle on social media and as a result beginning to connect with people through the power of music. The actual decision to start the blog was (as I recall) pretty spur the moment, and to be honest, the name just popped into my head. There are, as I have alluded to, other music sites and blogs that use the Ear to the Ground name - it is a good name. I think I came first, but whatever. Over the last couple of years, I have been really pushing the #E2TG brand.
Anyway, the first four events have been created on Facebook. The event for the fifth and final show is coming soon. I excited to announce it. If you've been to The 5 Spot since Wednesday or if you go this weekend, you can get a sneak peek at the Week 5 line-up.
All of the shows will be fantastic, plus as an added bonus (sarcasm only slightly intended), I am going to start each show by reading some short selections of my fiction - including my novel The Drift which will be self-published soon.
Here are the announced shows so far. I hope you can make to some or all of these.
Week 1 May 3 - Mark Robinson Band
Week 2 May 10 - Jon Latham (Full Band) with special guests
Week 3 May 17 - David Olney (Band) plus special guest opener Sergio Webb (Band)
Week 4 May 24 - Cafe Rooster Records Night (Sally Jaye, Brian Wright, Darrin Bradbury, and Jon Latham)
Week 5 May 31 - TBA (a long time East Nashville favorite plus a special out of town guest with long time ties to E2TG).
Well, I don't know about you, but for me this has been a long arduous week, and today is FRIDAY! Tomorrow is Record Store Day. I am going to be hanging with my daughter, so I'm not sure what, if anything, I will be able to participate in, but there is a ton going on around Nashville and everywhere else. In Nashville, my favorite radio station will have a presence at several of the venues. I remember when RSD in Nashville was only Grimey's and even then was not that big a deal. It seems to get bigger every year, and the number of record stores in Nashville seems to get growing every month. If you go, remember to pace yourself and stay hydrated.

Watching with interest the testimony from the FBI Director to Congress. This are surely historic and terrifying times.
Friday night - took in a bunch of great music and celebrating St. Patrick's Day in a very traditional way. Tim Carroll Rock n Roll Happy Hour with Luella - always a great way to start a Friday.
Ben de la Cour, Clark Paterson, and Patrick Kinsley and A Fistful of Dollars were all wonderful.
I spent the rest of the weekend trying to catch up on some things.
Well - it is Monday and time for some Music City Monday tunes. All artists with a connection to Nashville, Tennessee. Go!

Honestly, right now, I don't even know where to focus my outrage and frustration and utter disbelief that our nation has reached the point it has... #Resist #Persist - Take a breath when necessary. Refocus. Keep going. Still waiting for the GOP leadership to step up... waiting... waiting...
So... I am back after a extra long weekend. Took Friday off to run errands and rest up. Other than Double Shot on Saturday, I most hung after after Friday night. Plans for E2TG's 6th Anniversary month at The 5 Spot are coming together. More details very soon.
On to the shuffle for a Monday morning. As we always do, we focus on tracks with a Music City connection. Let's go!

Jumping back into the daily grind after an enjoyable weekend with my daughter and another fun recording for a future Double Shot show...
A quick reality check: Right now in America (2017), Customs agents are stopping domestic travelers and demanding papers. Among the high profile people detained under the guidance from the Republican administration: a noted children's author, an American Olympic medalist, the son of Muhammad Ali, and (chillingly) a note historian who specializes in studies of the Holocaust. This is not the America I have known my whole life.
The Republican administration (which has placed white nationalists in positions of power) has made up three different "terrorist" attacks to justify a travel ban. And, they have remained silent to real terror attacks by white nationalists on people of color across the country.
Resist! Persist!

My question for today... If there is any possibility (not to mention what now seems a probability) that American interests have been compromised by illicit contact with the Russian government, should not any American (regardless of ideological leanings) be interested in knowing the truth? Asking for a friend...

Well, the cat is almost/partially out of the bag.... In celebration of and as a thanks to everyone, E2TG will be hosting the early show every Wednesday in May! I will have a different co-host each week - I am finalizing the lineup and crossing i's and dotting t's, but I am super excited about these 5 shows. Expect to hear much more soon!
It is Tuesday and we have some trending music to get you through these early week blues... (NOTE: Some days, I can find every single song in the shuffle on You Tube - some days, not so much. I think I found three of the actual songs and in one case, I could not find any videos at all for the artist.... plus the embed is still not working.. I mean - WTF? Ah well, enjoy! Great music!

Okay, I'm back. Took a day off to recuperate from something...
There are so many shameful things being said and done by the current administration in Washington that it can be overwhelming to anyone (left or right) who has any shred of decency or sense. And that is the point... things like making up the "Bowling Green Massacre" and a fictional radical Islam attack on Atlanta - these are not slips of tongue they are deliberate attempts of obfuscate and distract. Making wild claims like that the media is covering up/failing to report terrorists attacks and then when pressed producing a list of attacks which includes many that were widely reported by the press - this is a purposeful tactic.
Meanwhile, the majority in Congress are silencing those who speak out against a racist Attorney General nominee while voting in goose step... er, I mean lock step to rubber stamp the most egregious and unqualified of this regimes nominees.
Meanwhile, a white supremacist who was neither elected or vetted still seems to be running the show in the White House which is now using our tax payers money to promote the business interest of the President's daughter.
I am going to stop until this madness is ended. #Persist #Resist
In much better news, East Nashville's own Aaron Lee Tasjan will be making his television debut on Conan O'Brien tonight and he will be accompanied by none other than 2016 E2TG Artist of the Year Brian Wright! There is going to be a viewing party (emphasis on PARTY) at the Basement East Pub tonight - as we cheer them on and shed a few tears of joy.
It is Thursday, and we continue with my "Theme" which began in January and continues. On one level, this "theme" Thursday is just a new mechanism to feature music from my phone memory card. On another, it is my attempt to find songs that fit (somewhat/kind of/sort of) a predetermined but undefined theme. As I said, I do not intend to imply nor should you infer that the writers/performers of these songs meant for these songs to have a meaning that would conform with my theme. Sometimes, the title phrase just triggered a thought or I made some wild logical jump to decide to include the songs in this playlist.

Okay, I'm back. Took a day off to recuperate from something...
There are so many shameful things being said and done by the current administration in Washington that it can be overwhelming to anyone (left or right) who has any shred of decency or sense. And that is the point... things like making up the "Bowling Green Massacre" and a fictional radical Islam attack on Atlanta - these are not slips of tongue they are deliberate attempts of obfuscate and distract. Making wild claims like that the media is covering up/failing to report terrorists attacks and then when pressed producing a list of attacks which includes many that were widely reported by the press - this is a purposeful tactic.
Meanwhile, the majority in Congress are silencing those who speak out against a racist Attorney General nominee while voting in goose step... er, I mean lock step to rubber stamp the most egregious and unqualified of this regimes nominees.
Meanwhile, a white supremacist who was neither elected or vetted still seems to be running the show in the White House which is now using our tax payers money to promote the business interest of the President's daughter.
I am going to stop until this madness is ended. #Persist #Resist
