Featured Friday Playlist recap (part 3 - the third part) (songs 23-29):

23. "La nuit pour nous deux" by Gabriel Naim Amor

First up, we have the lead single from a new compilation album to benefit homicide survivors. The album is called Luz de Vida II: A Compilation to Benefit Homicide Survivors which will be out November 5 and features contributions from Calexico, Dr. Dog, Amos Lee, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, and more.  Gabriel Naim Amor is a French born, Parisian musician who moved to Tucson, Arizona in 1997.

24. "Oddball" by The Baboon Show

Next up, we have a song for all the Oddballs in your life via Swedish punk rock band The Baboon Show. 

25. "Filament" by Chris Robley

We previously featured Chris Robley on his song "Sandra" - dedicated to Sandra Bland. Now, his new album A Filament In the Wilderness of What Comes Next is out now, and we have what is essentially the title track.  An amazing song - I am loving this album. 

26. "Kill for the Sound" by Infamous Stiffs

Next up, we have the title track from the recent album by the California punk band. The band, which formed in 2019, is made up of veterans of the California punk scene. 

27. "Yesterdays - Dance Remix" by Sarah Caltieri

Next  up, we have the dance remix of the latest single from this award-winning UK artist. 

28. "Fight or Flight" by Beyond the Grey

Next up, we have the latest single from this Kansas City hard rock band. 

29. "Ladies Night" by Cravism x Maya Diegel

Singapore-France chill-hop/R&B duo are back in the playlist with their most recent single.

Uggggg! Is the weekend over already?  The only good thing is that it is Monday and time for another Music City Monday shuffle - we have a good one today, and I was able to find YouTube videos for all of the actual songs from the shuffle.

Last night, I had the good fortune of being able to help my friend Gina celebrate her birthday and at the same time take in the always amazingly awesome Chris Scruggs and the Stone Fox Five.

In the Fall of 2014, in the early days of a new chapter in my life, I got the opportunity to preview and review a new album by the Grey A - a band from Washington D.C.  How that came about is one of those weird connection stories that seems to follow this blog and me around.  Howard Rabach who was truly one of the first (if not the first) readers of Eat to the Ground contacted me to let me know that he had joined a new band, and that the band was about to put out an album.

To make the weird connections even weirder, My Country - the debut album by the Grey A was recorded just a few miles away from where I grew up and featured many Nashville-area musicians.  I gladly agreed to review the album - even though I had only written a few album reviews.

My review appeared on this site and on No Depression on September 1, 2014.  Since that time, the Grey A have expanded to a powerhouse four-piece and are poised to release the third single from My Country, "Unusual As Usual" b/w "Until They Find Us".  The single features cover art by Maryland Visual Artist Chuck Rounds which was based upon a nude photograph of Grey Jacks - the mastermind behind the Grey A.

Here is how I described the song, when I reviewed the album: "Unusual as Usual" - Begins with thunderous bass/guitar line that runs counter to the previous tracks. This track’s insistent intensity drives a strong-minded message that seems to suggest blending in as a way of making real change from within a twisted and broken system. It's about playing a part -- with eyes wide open to the lies being told to our faces and the theft going on right underneath our noses. Hidden in plain sight, as it were, by the blandness and ordinariness of it all. Truthfully, I don’t know if I completely understand this song, but I got something out of it. And, as with the rest of the album so far, it is so infectious and  enjoyable, it’s like a really great teacher who imparts wisdom in an engaging way, and you listen, you soak it in, and you trust that even if every meaning and truth is not clear today, it’s all going in to be processed later, as you go on through your life.

In conjunction with the single release, the band are also releasing their second full-length video.




 The video, which like the first video, "Dumb Fool" features the band members, was filmed in the Washington D.C. restaurant, Comet Ping Pong. Which is also where the band will be celebrating the release of the single and video on April 20 with special guests, Joey Kneiser and Kelly Smith (of Grey Jacks old band Glossary) and Austin Lucas. Kneiser recently released, The Wildness, and Lucas is touring in support of his just released Between the Moon and the Midwest.  This will be a show that you do not want to miss.

Back at it on a Monday!   Had a good time Friday at The Country (after checking in with Tim Carroll and company at The 5 Spot) - Richie Owens and the Farm Bureau  + Saint Luke's Drifters.  Richie and company have a new album out now.  Saint Luke's Drifters are finishing up their new album.  If you get the chance to see either one or both of these bands, I highly recommend it.

Tonight: My recommendation is Matt Phillips and the Philharmonic from 7-9p.m. at Charlie Bob's on the eastside.   Here is the Facebook event, if you Facebook.

This is definitely prime season for new music - look for some awesome new albums coming up in the next few months - I think I got at least 5 albums to listen to and possibly review over the last four or five days.

Had a good time at The Western Shore CD Release party thing last night.  Charlie and Kalee sounded great, the right-wrong Isaac was awesome, and it is always a great joy to see and hear Aaron Lee Tasjan. 

Well, we made it to Friday, and I think I am still breathing, so that has to be a good sign.

Friday Morning Music Shuffle - Addicted to War Mix

Last night was so much fun...  Went to the Rocking Roots Guitar Showcase at The 5 Spot.  Four trios lead by incredible guitarists.  Nick Kane, Richie Owens with the Farm Bureau, Ted Drozdowski with his Scissormen, and Mark Robinson.  Great players with distinct and unique styles falling into the blues/roots area if labels mean much.  All of them were mind-blowingly awesome in very different ways.

After that showcase, I stuck around to see a long-time favorite of Ear to  the Ground, Pony Boy.  She was a Featured Artist in August 2012, and since then she has spent some time in Nashville, had a song featured on the ABC show named after our fair city, and last night she played a bunch of Nashville's hottest players.  The qualities which first lead me to her music were all present - an amazing voice, great songs (the originals and covers), and a great stage presence.  It was good to finally meet her.

Well, it's late for the shuffle, but circumstance kept me from posting.  As compensation, I extended the shuffle which means tons of music and just a bit of my celebrated wisdom.  That last line is ego disguised as wry humility cleverly cloaked in a veneer of ego.

September is shaping up to be a great month for live music in Nashville (I'm not sure that there is a bad month for live music in Nashville, but still...).  I kicked things off a little early with a great night of music in East Nashville.  I saw the legendary David Olney (who has been a fixture in Nashville music for as long as I can remember) and his incredibly tight band (with E2TG favorite Mark Robinson standing in and killing it on guitar) doing a Happy Hour show at The 5 Spot.   Then I hopped over to East Nashville's best dive bar, Fran's Eastside to see another E2TG favorite Darrin Bradbury and Tim Carroll doing their weekly thing.

 

Well, we have another great shuffle of music today, so it's get to it.
