E2TG 7/2/2020 - Ain't That America - Brain Damage Mix (No Show Blues Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Well, here in the States it is Fourth of July weekend. I think for many reasons the holiday will be different this year and maybe it should be different for some time to come. Rather than an excuse to swell with pride and celebrate, maybe - just maybe - we should use the time to reflect on where our nation has and is falling short and what we can do about it.

Here in Nashville, the number of COVID-19 cases has surged, and we are reverting to Phase 2 of the reopening plan. This is not surprising to me as I have seen so many people acting as if the pandemic is over. As for me, I never moved to Phase 3.  I am mostly staying put. I just wish, people could put their selfish interests aside, and I wish we had competent leadership. I want to go visit my Mom. I want to see live music again. But, most importantly, I don't want any more people to fucking die.

Independence Day - what we need is an Interdependence Day because guess what - unless you are living totally off the grid - raising all your own food, making all your own clothes - then you are interdependent and that involves people working together for a common good.

So Happy Interdependence Day!  I need you and you need me. Let's do this thing together for everyone...

By the way, I am off work tomorrow, and I normally don't post on my days off work, but what the heck, all the rules don't apply in 2020.  Not only will be be premiering he new Featured Friday Playlist, but we also have a very special Video Premiere - from an old friend - just in time for the 4th of July.

And now, it is time to complete our recap of this week's Featured Friday Playlist.  Remember tomorrow, a brand new playlist premieres. Follow and/or tune in for all the details.

The thing I love about these playlist is the depth of the music featured.  I haphazardly order the songs when I create the playlist - around midnight on Fridays, and I tend to start with artists I am most closely associated with - E2TG and/or local favorites.  After that, it is really pretty random.  Nonetheless, It is cool to recap these playlist the way I have been and to find gems throughout.  Of course, I dig all the music - I mean, I am the one who picks the songs, but there are some that really resonate with me more than others, and it is fun to see where those songs turn up.

Now, songs 21-25:

21."World's Finest" by Special Pillow
The Special Pillow mark their 25th Anniversary with a new EP called World's Finest, and we have the title track. They are from Hoboken, New Jersey and their music has a psych pop feel to it. This was my first time hearing their music, and I am a fan.
22. "Roman Bones Make Good Glue" by 8 Floors Up
8 Floors Up is the project of Danny Cawley - a veteran and survivor of the UK music scene. He formed his first band at age 17. They were managed by the ex-manager of the Stone Roses. Moving around England while fighting his personal demons, his story is one of perseverance and should provide hope to those who struggle. The music will appeal to fans of UK indie music of the last couple of decades, and I like it very much.
23. "Groovy Lucy" by Serratone
Next, we have the latest single from this three-piece rock band based in Manchester. This is hard-hitting and riff heavy music. Cool stuff.
24. "Clayton Jones Is Gonna Be Big" by TJ George
Shifting gears (we do that a lot here at E2TG), we have a wonderful song from this singer-songwriter from Columbus, Ohio singer-songwriter.  It is taken from his new EP, Fragmented Soul Vo1. 2 - which is a follow up to his 2014 release. I was not really surprised to find that several of my Facebook friends were already on board with his music.
25. "Babylon" by Dead Method
Released at the tail end of Pride month, "Babylon" is a powerful alternative pop song that celebrates and elevates all outcasts and outsiders. The band is based in Cardiff, and this track provides a groovy close to this week's list.

Throwback Thursday Morning Shuffle - Rails on Rails Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Very short on time... last night was great. The finale of the October Crackerboots residency - with Peter Cooper opening accompanied by Tom Jutz. I love Peter Cooper's songs so much, plus he closed with "Boulder to Birmingham" by Emmylou Harris and Bill Danoff, which I love.

Great show for the late show - loved The Battlefield - who I last and first saw three years ago at a New Faces night at The Basement. They from L.A., and I really dig their music.  And course, Don Gallardo.  His songs!  Man!  Adam Kurtz was on pedal steel - which serves as a transition...

Tonight, among what I am sure are a ton of worth things - including some that I would really like to see, Zach Schmidt will be celebrating the release of his new album, The Day We Lost the War. There will be special guest galore - and it's free (BYOB) at imogene + willie. 7pm. SHARP! Oh yeah, the transition... Adam Kurtz will be playing this show, too.

Let's throw it back... minimal commentary due to time constraints...

Throwback Thursday Morning Shuffle - So Far Today Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Welcome back to E2TG!  So, last night Amelia White wrapped up her month-long residency at The 5 Spot. As special guest Reckless Johnny Wales said, this means she is now a doctor!  Reckless Johnny sounded fantastic - as usual - backed by Chris Tench on guitar.

Amelia had an incredible band backing her including Robert Mache from Memphis, Parker Hawkins, and Fran Breen. Plus Chris Tench sat in for most of the set. Special guest Julie Christensen added her legendary vocals to some of Amelia's songs plus did a few of her own songs. Surprise guest Tomi Lynn Lunsford joined Christensen to sing background on "Dogs Bark" and then stayed to back up the last song of the night.  A wonderful ending to a fantastic residency.

Tonight: The 5 Spot is once again the place to be. Mark Robinson wraps up his Residency (I guess he will be a doctor now, too) in style.  With an expanded showband with Mark Jordan and Ben Graves joining Daniel Seymour and Rick Schell.  Plus the special guests are two of the finest vocalist Nashville has to offer... Jonell Mosser and Vickie Carrico.  Noted music blog, Ear to the Ground called the Mark Robinson Band one of the best live bands around, and they have certainly lived up to that this month.  Tonight will be one to remember. 6:00pm.

It is Thursday when we throw things back:

Throwback Thursday Morning Shuffle - The Fruit of Another MixA

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Hello Thursday!

Had a good time last night out at the first ever Garden Party Concert in Hermitage. They got off to a great start by having the amazing Ashleigh Flynn play. The weather was idyllic, the food was excellent, and the music was outstanding.  Seriously, Ashleigh Flynn who is from Portland, Oregon -by way of Kentucky - is a great songwriter and storyteller. It was nice to hear her do Todd Snider's "Play a Train Song" without some guy jumping on stage and singing like happened the last time I saw her at The 5 Spot.

For those of you not in Nashville, you may not know it, but this is CMA Festival Week which means a few of things...

1.  It is also Bonnaroo week
2.  The temperatures about to get ungodly hot
3.  Traffic in downtown Nashville is about to hit critical mass

In light of #3, rather than trying to get out of downtown and go home after work, I will be heading across the river for some counter-programming.  The guy who Rolling Stone named one of the Ten New Country Artists You Need to Know in May 2016 and who loyal E2TG readers have known about since at least late 2013, Darrin Bradbury, will be joining Don Gallardo ("country-rock with brains, charm and experimental impulses that are perfectly integrated into a familiar context." Nashville Scene) for Week 2 of Gallardo's residency at The 5 Spot.

Well, it is Thursday when I (and the rest of the internet) throw things back to a far more earlier time. Today's shuffle is typically unpredictable and wildly diverse.  Maybe my unpredictability is getting predictable?   The shuffle just might include at least one song that you will hear in about 48 hours on the debut Double Shot with Joe and Sue on WXNA-LP Nashville. Check out the shuffle below and then tune in Saturday and see if you can figure out to which song I am referring....

Throwback Thursday Morning Shuffle - The Last Night of the Fair Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

We have arrived at Thursday.  For the daily "theme" today, I decided upon the term, "Throwback Thursday"... honestly, I'm surprised no one has come up with this sooner.... I even came up with a hashtag (#tbt) for it.  Clever aren't I?

I think the concept is pretty self-explanatory.  I hope to show that music in the past was extremely diverse and varied - in spite of what "Classic Rock" stations may lead you to believe....

without ado....

Monday Morning Music Shuffle - Linger On Mix

Lou Reed (1942-2013)

It is impossible for me to say with any degree of certainty that Ear 2 the Ground would not exist if it weren't for Lou Reed.  But, what I can say with absolute certainty is that it would not be the same. The simple but truthful reason is that music would not be the same.  Walk on, linger on...

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle - Lead Balloon Mix

Thankful for all of you and for the great music that has come my way this year.

Dreary and drizzly morning even though the forecast says a 0% chance or rain. I guess drizzle is not considered rain?
Another shuffle of the November 2011 playlist:

I'm Real Punk by Brother Howe.   The one where BOTW alums Brother Howe demonstrate that they are in fact Real Punk.  Put on your slam dancing shoes and slam dance your blues away.

VCR by The Antlers.  The one where The Antlers - the Brooklyn-based indie rock band - covers The xx - the English indie pop band. Let's go watch things on VCR...

Walking For You by The Avett Brothers.  The one where transportation won't hold the Avetts back from their baby...
(click on the Carolina Jubilee album cover to purchase and download Walking to You by The Avett brothers @ Amazon.com)

Another Brick in the Wall Part 2 by Roger Waters. The one where Roger Waters covers Pink Floyd.  Wait, is it really a cover when a solo artist does a song by his old band?  Growing up the son of a college professor, I'm sure it was disturbing for him to hear me singing this song...

Don't forget to vote for the Band of the Year.
