Sometimes, it all seems to much!  Here in Nashville in 2020, we have had the March 3 tornado, the COVID-19 pandemic, the largest blackout in the cities history, and no protests and riots in the streets. I want to call for a time out!

BUT, then I think, relatively speaking I have at most been inconvenienced by all of this.  If I am this exhausted, I wonder how those who have been deeply and directly affect must feel. And, then I think about being a person of color in America twenty years into the 21st Century - and how long systemic racism has been allowed to go on. And, I think if I am this worn out, how much people of color feel...

So, yes, I am exhausted and I would love a week or more with no significant news, and I want to be able to safely go out and see my friends and attend live music events. But, until it is safe, I will stay in as much as I can and I will be okay.

 And I want there to be peace in our cities, but you know, until tangible changes are made, I understand the unrest.

I also have concerns about the role of right wing groups in instigating the violence in order to discredit the valid protests. And, this is where it gets trick and this is where maybe I don't get to offer my hot takes... Stay vigilant, stay safe, and spread love are the best advise I have to offer.

In spite of it all, this is a music blog, and music has always been a refuge for me through whatever turbulence I have experienced, and so, we will continue our review of this week's Featured Friday Playlist with song 7-12:

7. "Political Funk" by Mick Hayes

From the album My Claim to FAME which was recorded by legendary FAME Studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. I am just discovering Mick Hayes' music, and this album has blown me away. I picked this track partially because the song coincidentally shares its name with a short-lived early 90s Nashville group - that I can't find any proof actually existed. Nonetheless, this is a great song and a great diving in point for this album which is infused with the magic of the studio where it was recorded. 

8. "Young Loved and Free" by Audrey and Hugh

From the album Sisterman. There is a recurring theme lately of reconnecting with artists that I wrote about in the past. This is new album is the debut for the duo of Audrey MacAlpine and Hugh Trimble - along with Mason Wheaton. Sisterman was the name they previously used for the band. Totally coincidentally, E2TG wrote about Hugh Trimble a few years back when we covered some of the music he recorded at Mama Coco's Funky Kitchen in New York. Audrey and Hugh are based in Nashville name, and I got turned on to this release by a post of a good friend whose musical taste I  respect. 

9. "Fixer - Live" by Adrian + Meredith

I am missing Adrian + Meredith, and I am missing live music at The 5 Spot, so I thought I would play another track from Adrian + Meredith Live at The 5 Spot. I love these guys. For this recording they have their big band, and it is great hearing the Nashville horns.

10. "The Deleted History of Us" by Cursive is Code

Another song from our friends from Connecticut. Jason P. Krug and company have hit upon a great new sound that retains the spirit of his previous work (solo and with Grimm Generation). This time there is a funky liveliness that I really dig.

11. "You Got Me" by Bill Lloyd

New music from Bill Lloyd is always a pleasure. His brand new album is a called Don't Kill the Messenger. In the 1980s, Lloyd led the power pop band The December Boys before releasing his classic solo album Feeling the Elephant.  In the early 90s, he formed the country music duo Foster and Lloyd with Radney Foster and had some chart success. He was also in a supergroup called The Sky Kings - we covered a recent reissue by them recently.  He leads The Long Players - who recreate classic albums, and he has put out a series of albums of the last several years that represent pop songwriting at its best. 

12. "With Love, from Quarantine" by Shayfer James

Shayfer James was a "Featured Artist" exactly eight years ago. The New Jersey singer-songwriter came to our attention at the height of our New York/New Jersey obsession. This is a wonderful and timely new song. Great to hear from him and to be able to present it to you.

"Dirty Dishes" by Becca Mancari (from Good Woman)

Going back to her 2017 album, we have a great track. Mancari has a brand new album due out this month that was produced by Zac Farro of Paramore. 

"One Last Question" by Jason & the Scorchers (from Nashville, The Other Side of the Alley: Insurgent Country Vol. 3)

A wonderful Jason and the Scorchers track from that awesome mid-90s compilation released by Bloodshot records - the album also features Tim Carroll, Tom House, Kristi Rose, R.B. Morris, and Dan Baird among many others. 

"Woke Up Jake" by Dan Baird (from Buffalo Nickel)

Speaking of the aforementioned Mr. Baird, we have a track from his most excellent solo album Buffalo Nickel - which was the follow-up to Love Songs for the Hearing Impaired. 

"One Thing I Know About Love" by Jonell Mosser and John Hall (from Little Black Dress)

Next up, we have one of Nashville finest - Jonell Mosser has been a force on the Nashville music scene for many years, and having seen her live a couple of time this year (and very late last year), I can attest that she is still at the top of her game. 

"Freightliner Fever" by Jon Byrd (from Byrd's Auto Parts)

A tribute to truckers and more precisely to trucking songs from the debut solo album by the one and only Jon Byrd. 

"Crocodile" by Lori Kelley (from Under Stars and Storms)

And, we close with a long time friend of E2TG, singer-songwriter Lori Kelley from her most recent album.  Kelley helped organize and run the Eastside Takeover at Bobby's Idle Hour in 2015 or so, which provided so many memorable Sunday evenings.

The early evening is almost as perfect as the day was. It’s a good walk to
Antonio’s. We’re walking in a loose pack. Zü is not with any one of us, but she
is not exactly avoiding us either. It’s hard to explain, but it is impossible to
misinterpret. Richard is telling me about a football game, and as usual, I’m
struggling to connect myself to the conversation. Apparently, he got into a game
on the main quad. Richard is saying something about catching a pass or
something, and I try to react with the proper amount of enthusiasm. A car is
driving slowly down the road and weaving slightly. A dog is howling on an
adjacent street, and someone somewhere is blowing their car horn. All of a
sudden, somebody grabs my arm.

I'm glad that I decided to make Monday's at E2TG Music City Monday.  It, at least, gives me one thing to look forward to about the start of another week.  Our Music City Monday Playlist on Spotify contains over 1,000 songs from Nashville and former Nashville based artists from the past and the present.  It is an eclectic mix that I think provides a good cross-section of some of the awesome music that was and is being made in Nashville - Music City USA.

Best laid plans...  I started this like I do every day. I had a dental appointment at 11:30, and I planned to take the rest of the day off work. I hoped to make it home by like 2 or something, and I was going to finish this post and do a bunch of other things. Well, I just got home around 8:00pm.  But, this was such I good shuffle that I didn't want to let it go without posting it.

So, my written contribution will be minimal but enjoy.

I haven't been posting too much about current events here. I never wanted or intended to... but as you may be aware since last year, I have felt compelled. When I do make posts like this, I do not consider them political though some might. I believe there is value in all political viewpoints being heard and respected. I do not, however, there are things happening that go far beyond political differences.

I am proud of and support the young people speaking up about the cancer of gun violence which has gripped our country.  I am disgusted by those who attack, threaten or belittle these engaged young people.

On another note, as the Mueller investigation moves forward, we are clearly in uncharted territory as a nation. I don't know how this will end or even how it should end, but it is clear that our nation is and has been under attack and we need to do something.

Personally, I think our democracy is broken and needs to be repaired. I don't know how or if it will be repaired.  These are definitely interesting and troubling time.

The near constant barrage of information is overwhelming. I believe there is a concerted effort to instill a sense of chaos and confusion to keep American's back on their heels. I, for one, need to find solid ground.

As always, I turn to music as a solace.

I am super excited to announce that E2TG will be back at The 5 Spot every Thursday in June. We will be celebrating our seventh anniversary in style with a different awesome line up every week. I am currently finalizing acts and dates, but expect further announcements soon!

Now, it's Monday, and as you may know, on Monday, we shuffle up songs from Nashville's past and present.  We call it Music City Monday. Since the beginning of the new year, we have been shuffling up a special Spotify playlist made up of some of the awesome people who have called Nashville home.

Spotify is a tool for hearing music, but it does not, unfortunately pay artists well. Saving or downloading music on that site is not the same as buying the music.

Welcome to the working week.  This weekend, Nashville celebrated the birth of a brand new community radio station as WXNA-LP went on the air at 101.5FM with a live stream going out via the web at WXNAfm.org and via the Tunein App.  All weekend long, the station previewed many of the great original programming, and as of this morning, the shows have begun to air.  If you haven't done so, check out the station.  It is awesome!  A huge shout out to the amazing folks who built the station from scratch. Salute!

The show I am co-hosting with Sue Havlish (Double Shot with Joe and Sue) had our preview yesterday, and it was a blast.  We take to the airwaves for our first regular show on Saturday June 11 at 11a,m. in the Central Time Zone. Our first theme will be A Tale of Two Nashvilles (Altman and ABC).

Last night, I took in the Guy Clark tribute at The Basement (original version), and it was a blast.  Reckless Johnny Wales, Carl Anderson, Darrin Bradbury plus hosts Todd Henkin and Charlie Treat and so many more did a great job.

It's Monday and that means we spin songs from the Music City Monday playlist... let's see what came up today.

I had just rolled over to try to sleep when my phone buzzed. A bad habit I know, but I looked at it.  "David Bowie Dead at 69". And, I thought it was one of those terrible internet hoaxes. I put the phone down - convinced that was the case, but I picked it up again, and I discovered that it was true. I felt numb.

My own exploration of his music was as random - just like all my explorations of music tend to be. I am not even certain where it began or the exact order.  I knew David Bowie from MTV - probably before, but MTV opened up several musical doors for me.. say what you will about it.  "Ashes to Ashes", "Let's Dance", "China Girl".... Lou Reed was an early influence of mine, and I found out that Bowie has co-produced Transformer - an album that helped transform me. I got a cassette of Hunky Dory and I wore it out. There was a lot I didn't understand about myself. Bowie's music helped. Ziggy Stardust.... 

I am having hard time really accepting that he is gone, but I am heartened by all of the posts on my Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram feeds - so many vastly divergent musicians and fans sharing many shared experiences some of which echo my own.  Music, for me, has been a companion through many lonely times, but it has also been a source of connection with others.

As we must, we press on... My week long Birthday adventures kicked off last night with a couple of cool rounds a Bobby's Idle Hour on Music Row.  First, "Earie" award winners Joe Nolan, Drew Kohl, and Andrew Adkins shared a stage, and they all sounded fantastic.

There was a second round, and I had intended to leave, but I ended up staying.  Three singer-songwriters that I had not heard before -   Kyler Daron, Joey Maloney, and Peter McKeown. Seems an appropriate part of my Birthday Week.

Tonight, the week continues - moving on up to the Eastside for night 2 of Darrin Bradbury's month-long residency at The Basement East. Tonight's guest are Zach Schmidt and Tim Easton - two of East Nashville's finest songwriters.  Come on out and hang and listen to cool tunes.

One of the reasons I love Nashville, is the fact extraordinary musical moments can feel down right ordinary.  For instance being at cool little dive bar on the East side for an early show that just happens to feature Kevn Kinney (drivin' and cryin') playing with a band he introduced as Sun Tangled Angel Revival (S.T.A.R.) which is a project he started in 2002.  The band just happened to feature Sadler Vaden (currently in Jason Isbell's band), Bryan Howard (of Cracker), and current drivin' and cryin' drummer, Dave V. Johnson. The band sounded great, and then a little more than half way through the hour and a half show, Audley Freed (Black Crowes, Sheryl Crow etc.) took the stage and there was some amazing guitar magic. Freed and Vaden together was simply out of this world.

After hanging out a bit at The 5 Spot for a little while, drive across the river for the Patrick Kinsley and a Fistful of Dollars album release show.  I hope by now you've read my review of For a Thousand Miles and grabbed your copy.  A singer-songwriter named James Roquemore opened the night, and I really like his songs and sound.  Look for some music from him coming soon to the shuffle.  Anthony Adams and the Nite Owls were up next and they brought the party to the party, they were followed by Kinsley and his band who sounded great, and the show was capped by local band Furious Primates - who I finally heard for the first time, and who I now consider myself a fan. 

Well... I've run on at the mouth a bit, so let's get to this morning's shuffle....

So... much happening.  I was in a car for about half of yesterday.  I have just been catching up with the news out of South Carolina. Sending out good thoughts to all those who lost loved ones.  And sending out as much love as I can muster for this country in hopes that we can finally begin address some of the many issues which lead to this terrible event.  I am not optimistic about things, but I remain hopeful.  If that makes sense.

Switching gears... If you are in Nashville tonight, I recommend heading down to the Basement East for a benefit for Allen Thompson.  Even if the music wasn't going to be good, you should support this because Allen is a great guy.  But this is East Nashville and the music is going to be spectacular.  Even if Allen wasn't a great guy, you should go because the music is going to spectacular.  But Allen is a great guy.

Lot's to cover...

Couch by Couchwest 2015 rolls on, and I am getting further behind on all the great music, but it's a marathon not a sprint... or something like that... actually, I think it is against the rule to use a running analogy when talking about CXCW...  Day 2 included appearances by #E2TG favorites Batkhi Dahn and Matt Prater, and the day ending video featured East Nashville's own Tim Easton playing Ray Wylie Hubbard's guitar from the Netherlands or something like that.  I hope I didn't miss anyone, but I feel like I did.  If so, I will make it up - as I plan to do a mid-week recap as well as a end of festival summary... UPDATE: I remember who I forgot - Tipi Valley - how could I?

Went out last night to see some friends play music...  Kiely Schlesinger was stunning as always, Lindsay Ellyn sounded fantastic, and Taylor Alexander from Young America (who released an EP yesterday and who was joined by Lindsay Ellyn) was awesome and the imagining of a Cher as a traditional country singer was brilliant.

In the opening mic that followed, I enjoyed seeing Fendrick and Peck, Eddie Crummer, Darrin Bradbury, and Zachariah Red.

Now, we have a shuffle to put on....

Off work today -  I thought I would semi-live blog today's shuffle....

Numerologists will note that before today's shuffle, my active playlist stands at six hundred sixty six.  Make of that what you will, but beside any other connotations, the playlist is a large as it has ever been, and I hope it generates an interesting mix of music.  I don't know if it will, but I have high hopes because I know the songs that make up the playlist.  I just don't yet know the order they will come out... so without further ado...  let's get ready to shuffle...

"There's a splinter in your eye..."    Todays shuffle has it all (or it has a bunch of it, or at least some of it....):  Old and new friends of E2TG, heroes, legends! Crossing stylistic boundaries without any hesitation! Crossing decades of music like we have a freaking time machine!  This is what we do at Ear to the Ground!     Look, my viral infection is lingering, yesterday's 60 degree high is in free-fall, it is a sucky rainy day that is supposed to give way to all kinds of frozen junk which this Southern city is ill equipped to handle, and so I am just trying to maintain the kind of enthusiasm this eclectic and fine mix of music deserves.  Sorry for any unnecessary hyperbole or manic-ness of the above introduction....
