Look, there are a lot of music blogs and music sites. There is even another one called Ear to the Ground (but we don't talk about that around here). One thing I learned from all those business classes I look, is that you have to find your niche. Here at E2TG, the niche I have carved out is playing mixes of songs that no one else is or would play. Sometimes that means mixing up genres and styles and eras of music that generally do not get along to well. My philosophy is that music all springs from the same source and that it (and we) are all connected - however remotely.
To put it another way, here is a pretty wild ass mix of songs that you will not see in the post on any other site (guaranteed or your money back)...

Wild Wednesday Morning Shuffle - Abandoned Studio Mix

The evidence is mounting... Derek Hoke's $2 Tuesdays at The 5 Spot are a guaranteed good time. The price, the music, the $2 Yazoos, the company... it never fails to brighten my week.
Last night, DJ Tim Hibbs was spinning songs meant to counteract the hate and fear that has been so prevalent this week. The line-up including two acts that have been featured in shuffles so far this week: Darrin Bradbury and Jesse and Noah. Plus Derek and his incredible trio, and the night ended with an incendiary performance by Porter and the Bluebonnet Rattlesnakes (from Austin).
(Porter being the amazing Chris Porter). Shonna Tucker joined them for several songs. And I did not catch the bass players name, but he left nothing on the stage ending on the ground while never missing a note.
Tonight, Darrin Bradbury will be on Music City Roots live from the Factory in Franklin. If you cannot make it down, it streams at Music City Roots dot com. Darrin will be doing a full-band set joined by Matty Alger, Megan Palmer, Derek Hoke, and Cameron Carrus. Don't miss it!

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle - Enough is Enough Mix

First of all, let's all try to be good to one another...
Second, The "Earies" continues. I call today's award, "So You Think Joe Can Dance??? Really???" award.
The premise: I mean c'mon, I'm a fighter not a dancer... or something like that. I mean, sure I will flail around sometimes in a crowd in front of the stage, but when it comes to spontaneous dancing, it does not happen that often... however....
The Winner: As I have said before, The Mark Robinson Band is one of the best and most entertaining live acts in Nashville. They do not play in town super often, and so when they do, it is Must See Live Music. Mark Robinson is a stellar guitarist and his rhythm section (usually Justin Amaral and Daniel Seymour) are simply the best (at the most recent show, Rick Schell filled in for Justin and he's not slouch either.... ahem*Pure Prairie League*ahem).
So at the tail end of this years Tomato Fest in East Nashville, it came about due to the infectious grooves and some instigators, I found myself dancing not once but twice. I figured that deserved an award (not my dancing!!!). By the way, many of the awards are directly or indirectly going to be related to albums released in 2015.... because I hate doing Top 10 lists - basically. Mark Robinson and his band did not release a new album in 2015 (expect one next year), but Robinson has been busy producing other folks and he did release a two-sided single, "Gone South" (both an Electric Rock and Acoustic Folk version).
Congrats to The Mark Robinson Band with a hat tip to the instigators Mary Sack, Karen Leipziger, and Mark Robinson's lovely other half, Sue Havlish. Let's Dance!
Third, I am emerging for my self-imposed exile from live music beginning tonight. Over the next three days, I expect to see the following artists on Nashville stages: Fats Kaplin, Red Collar, Two Cow Garage, Austin Lucas, Jon Latham, Malcolm Holcomb, Sadler Vaden, and Drivin' n' Cryin' with Warner E. Hodges. Whew! Other cool stuff that I will have to miss, too.
Fourth, we have a very cool shuffle this morning... so jump to it!

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle - Hit the Right Spot Mix

The 1st Annual E2TG Awards (The Earies) continues... Today's award ended in a tie (expect several to end up this way). Today's award is "The Better Late Than Never Award" (aka "The Anti-Hipster Award".
About the Award: As a respected music blogger (ahem!) and journalist (ahem!), I do pride myself on "discovering" new artists early on in their careers. However, I also recognize that there is (and has been) a ton of great music out there, and that I went through periods where life and all kept me from being on the cutting edge like I am today (ahem!). I also remember the days of trying to outdo people by claiming to have been a fan of (some band or artist) since before they had even played their first show or whatever. So, these days, when I "discover" music that is new to me or that I have been aware of but not really checked out thoroughly, I just proudly admit that fact and move on.
The two winners of this award are both Nashville artists who released albums prior to 2015, but that I did not get my grubby little hands on until this year. Do I wish I had heard the heard the music sooner? Sure, it's good stuff, which is why I am handing out the awards (again, no actual trophies will be exchanged).
Winner #1: Paul Zografi - Bright (Released 10/2014)
I met Paul at Bobby's Idle Hour through Tim Carroll which is when I copy a copy of this album which I fell in love with. Found out he shares at least one band member with Joe Nolan who was also playing at Bobby's that night. Zografi's music has clarity and understatement and really good songs.
Congratulations to the winners! More to Come....

Winner #2: Richie Owens and the Farm Bureau - Tennessee (Released May 2014)
There was a even longer interval between the release of this album and my getting hold of it, and in this case, I really don't have a good excuse. I first saw Richie Owens and the Farm Bureau late in 2014 at Rocking Roots Guitar Showcase during Americana week. (I have been a fan of Richie's music for over 30 years). I have been fortunate to see them live on a number of occasions since then, but I didn't get a hold of the album until a chance encounter with Farm Bureau bassist John Reed downtown over the summer. The album offers a rootsy, rocking history of the Volunteer State through familial and public stories that span the state. Owen's besides being an amazing instrumentalist and songwriter, is able to provide an authentic and honest voice to the stories. Plus, he has more first hand stories of the beginnings of Nashville's independent music "scene" than just about anybody I know.

Had a good time last night celebrating Andrew Leahey's birthday at The 5 Spot. Darrin Bradbury was on point with a set that featured some old favorites and some excellent new (and newish) songs. Lauren Farrah was most excellent - I have been fortunate enough to catch her a few times recently, and she kills it every time. And the birthday boy rocked this house with his incredible band, The Homestead - playing several songs from his record which is due out in April.
On to the shuffle: Almost every Friday is Featured Friday on #E2TG. Which means, I shuffle songs from a playlist (a subset of the regular playlist) loaded with songs from artists/albums that I want to spotlight. Here is the latest....

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle - You, You Know I'm Right Mix

I had a good time last night at The Basement East. I got to see performances from two people I was first introduced to at the Safety Harbor Song Fest way back in late March - Chris Gelbuda and Daphne Willis. It was the soft EP Release Show for Willis - whose new EP, Get It, will be released on Friday.
Opening the show was Kyshona Armstrong. She actually played the first Safety Harbor Song Fest in 2014. She plays some wonderful acoustic soul music and was backed by an outstanding band. I really enjoyed her set, and I will be on the lookout for more opportunities to see her again.
Daphne Willis played next back by yet another outstanding band. I am always hesitant to assign genres when the artist/band does not. I will say there is a real pop instinct to her music. The overwhelming impression is energy, enthusiasm, and a very clear understanding and appreciation for the way her music sounds. Chris Gelbuda, who co-produced her new CD, joined her for a couple of songs, and then was the next on the bill.
I found out after the set that Gelbuda and his band only got the chance for minimum rehearsal time before the show, but I can honestly say, that did not come across. Gelbuda is an accomplished producer (he produced the latest hit single for Meaghan Trainor) and a professional songwriter. I was very impressed by the caliber of his songs.
Unfortunately, I had to leave before the last act on the bill was done, but Sonia Leigh - playing with much of the band that accompanied Daphne Willis - sounded great.
On to the mid-week shuffle for your listening pleasure...

Okay... this has to be a fast one. I walked over to the Southern Festival of Books during my lunch break (when I usually write and post the blog) to see Julie Christensen and part of Stone Cupid (Chris Tench and Sergio Webb). They killed it as usual.
Last night - quickly - some highlights: Week 2 Campfire Propaganda Residency... guests Ariel Buie and Actual Wolf. Megan Palmer - on keyboard playing a new song and a John Moreland song. Nellie Clay with Actual Wolf, Tim Easton as usual, Brian Wright - fighting jet lag and killing it (with Aaron Lee Tasjan for a couple of songs), Darrin Bradbury and Megan Palmer - Darrin leading his own more of meditation...
Coverfest at Basement East!!! Major props to Terry Rickards for putting this together. Everyone was great, and I don't have time for a full report, but I will just say Los Colognes doing Bob Dylan's Infidels album in its entirety and nailing it and Allen Thompson Band as The Eagles were my absolute favorites (it was all good). The Eagles segment was so much fun!

(To be fair, however, I do pick the songs that go into the overall playlist from which the shuffle function draws)....

Heritage Blues Orchestra with Special Guest Keb Mo
Took in a great show last night at the historic Franklin Theatre in Downtown Franklin, TN. The show marked the first ever Nashville area appearance of the Heritage Blues Orchestra from New York City. Their music incorporated traditional Blues tunes with some jazz-inspired arrangements to create a very diverse and fun night of music. The guitar work of Junior Mack was outstanding, the vocals were out of this world. Special Guest Keb Mo was incredible.
To close out the week, we have pretty cool Featured Friday shuffle that is a good mix that includes songs sent to me by some of the most consistently awesome publicists from whom I get music along with some awesome songs from of the immensely talented friends I've made on this journey of music and life.
