E2TG 11/4/2020 - ???????? - Dilettante Mix (Freedom Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

First of all, yes, it is okay to be impressed that I am continuing on today with all of the uncertainty in our country.  Just kidding - E2TG helps keep me sane.

The only thing I know for sure is that no matter the outcome of this or any other election, we have a very difficult path ahead. There are divisions that must be healed or at least begin to be healed if this nation is going to stand.

I have read several comments from my left-leaning friends who - like me - are horrified that so many people support such an (to us) obviously incompetent, racist, xenophobic, homophobic president. While I 100% acknowledge that we as a nation have deep and engrained issues with racism and other forms of bigotry - I do also need to acknowledge that many people who are supporting the current President are doing to out of fear - real and intense fear - and I do not see a path ahead for this nation unless all of those fears are at least acknowledge and unless work is done around those fears.

I don't know how that happens.  When facts and science and logic are ignored and met with disdain - I am not sure how to reach those people. I think those fears have been long-held and the Republicans have long used those fears to lure vulnerable voters. These people fear that their way of life is threatened.  They have had these fears stoked by right wing media outlets for years.

So, while there are many racists and bigots who support the current administration - there are also many people who have let their fear blind them to the fascist and racist tendencies of their chose leader. This is not meant as a defense of these people and people of color, LGBTQ+ people, women who want to control their own health and bodies, the disabled etc., all have every right to be disgusted by these people. I do think understanding is a start. And, I do know people whose thinking has evolved.

As with any election (and more so with this one perhaps), there are opportunities for learning and growth and change. There are deep divisions not just between left and right but between many who are on the left. Between hardline progressives and moderate/centrist liberals. I do hope we can find a way to make the necessary changes in a respectful manner and in a way that listens to all sides and all voices and debates the needed changes without name-calling and bitterness.

I don't know if any of that needed healing and polite discourse is even possible, but I do know if it is possible it probably won't come from comment sections on social media posts or news articles. It will come with many, many open one-on-one discussions. Talkin' about a revolution sounds like a whisper.

Find peace today - however you can!

Feature Friday Playlist Recap - continues with Songs 20-24 - the depth of this week's Playlist shines through here - it bears repeating that I have a loose design when it comes to my Featured Friday Playlists mixed with a little classic E2TG randomness, but one thing is certain - the list should never be considered a ranking of any kind. I could give you the formula I used to order the songs, but then I would have to kill you. (Plus, it probably doesn't make sense except to me). Suffice it to say this segment of the list proves that quality music can be found throughout my weekly Playlists.

20. "The Fall" by Pozzi
L.A. based alt-folk artist Pozzi is becoming a semi-regular here at E2TG.  We have featured a few of his earlier singles.  His debut album, Tyrant, has been out for a couple of months, and I continue to be impressed by his songs and his voice.
21. "In My Head" by The Amboys
The Amboys were a Band of the Week at E2TG way back in 2012, and I even got to see them live at The Basement in March of that year. I had kind of lost touch with this New Jersey band that combined traditional folk instrumentation with a punk rock approach and sense of humor, but thanks to the little birds of Bandcamp, I was alerted to the fact that they had just released a new single and here it is. Always great to hear from old favorites, and The Amboys do not disappoint.
22. "A Little Heat" by Andrew Grimm
Next up, we have the title track from the world-wide solo debut from Maryland based singer-songwriter Andrew Grimm.  The album was produced by Eric "Roscoe" Amble. Grimm is behind the long-running Baltimore band June Star.  This is a flat out great song, and Grimm's voice really got to me.
23. "Parfum De Nuit" by Marten Larka
Next up, we have a new single from Swedish alt-pop singer-songwriter Marten Larka - who is described as Wilco under the influence of Gainsbourg. And, although I know the music of both the named artists - I don't feel qualified to access the veracity of that claim, but what I can tell you is that this is a fantastic song. Alt-pop is a pretty widely encompassing descriptor, but in this case, I think it fits, and I love the sound.
24. "Good Man Down" by The Mojo Slide

We close out this segment with a new single from UK blues rock band The Mojo Slide. Blues rock is another descriptor that can mean a lot of things to a lot of different people. What I hear is a definite influence of the blues with a refreshingly original sound. A great way to close out this segment of music.

“Do you want to do something?” Richard asks me as we walk out of the
cafeteria into the declining day.
“What do you have in mind?”
“Nothing, really. I just don’t want this moment to end.”
“Me either. But, moments always end. The important thing is to find
more moments. That’s one of the most important things I’ve learned.”

To be honest, I don't know a whole lot about what live music is like in other cities... just what I have heard. I know that Nashville is a great city for lovers of live music - of all variety.  I know that musicians don't generally make as much (or often very much) money here as they do in other cities. The number of live music events going on every single night is staggering, and there are always difficult/impossible choices to be made. As a music fan, you sometimes have to make really difficult decisions about what shows to see or if you need to make a much needed night off from going out.

All of that to say, I made my way to The 5 Spot last night for the release show of Justin and the Cosmics PERF record. The album was recorded at Ardent Studio in Memphis.  It was a wonderful night of weirdness and music and mayhem. So many memorable moments. From the emcee Square Bill "singing" Prince covers to Scott Collins guitars. Guests like Chris Crofton - in from Los Angeles and riffing on "New Nashville", Thayer Sarrano was captivating, Kim Collins did a intense a cappella song that ended with her being carried from the stage, The Smoking Flowers did an old song by Justin Collins, Robyn Hitchcock with a band that included Pat Sansone (Wilco, Autumn Leaves) (who produced PERF - by the way) did a short set that included some Velvet Underground, John Lennon, and a Soft Boys song written by Hitchcock, Ben Burr read some awesome poetry.  But the clear stars of the show were Justin Collins and his band The Cosmics who played a long set of songs from the album, classics from their back catalog, and some choice (and rare for them) covers - including "Police on my Back".  It was the most fun I've had since the last time I saw Justin and the Cosmics play.

Tonight, I am looking forward to Chuck Prophet at The Basement East.

Meanwhile, the humidity is now falling from the sky in copious amounts, and we have our "Featured Friday" shuffle. Let's go.

Featured Friday Morning Shuffle - Are You Having Fun Boys and Girls? Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Reminder the Magnolia Roads American Roots Hoedown III kicks off tonight with a pre-party at Dee's.  Details and feature on Taylor Kropp (plus links to the first four parts of my preview and features on other artists can be found HERE.

Among the artists performing tonight at Dee's is Allen Thompson.  I went out (for the first time in over a week) last night for the last night of Allen's residency at The 5 Spot.  Maxwell Putnam opened -and as usual he was awesome.  Allen played with a ten piece band that he dubbed Lady Couch.  The band included Jack Silverman, Clint Maine, and Lilly Winwood, and the Nashville Horns. They played a loose, fun set of originals and choice covers. Pretty awesome for an early show (it would have been awesome regardless of the time).

Now, it is FRIDAY!  We have a very mixed bag of music to "Feature".  So sit back, as we take the week out in style.

Trending Tuesday Morning Shuffle - Exotic Calls Mix

A little over a year ago, I first began posting an occasional "political" commentary on E2TG. As I stated then, it was not something I wanted to do and that I did not really consider most of what I wrote as "political" (although it can be a fine line sometimes). As I intimated then, and still feel strongly today, there should be room at the table for people who hold a wide variety of political and social positions. At it's ideal and best, the United States (and our leaders) should be a shining example of lively debate and measured compromise.  Where we find ourselves now is embroiled and entrenched in hyper-partisanship and obstruction. Our elections are compromised in so many ways. The effects of Citizen's United (an Orwellian named law) are devastating to democracy and harmful to the republic. Voter suppression, gerrymandering, and unchecked foreign influences are the nails in the coffin.

I am cautiously hopeful about the mid-term elections, and I still cannot imagine that the current president will last his full term - but even if everything goes the way I want it to, we will still have miles to go...

I try not to let it get me down.  I do what I can, but the results are mostly not within my control. Life can still be a beautiful thing. Friendships and family and the beauty of the world. The mysteries of science and time and space surround us.

For me, music remains a source of strength. Songs that comfort, songs that excite, songs that motivate action, songs that inspire....

E2TG has provided me with an incredible opportunity to hear a ton of music that I might otherwise never hear, and to meet talented people who are pushing against long odds and seeming disinterest at times - to do what they feel compelled to do....

So, I push on - as I approach seven years of E2TG - offering my small contribution by putting music out there hopefully in an interesting way.

Featured Friday Morning Shuffle - No No No But Yes Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Well, country music was saved last night, thanks to Buck N Stuff.  Their CD release show for their live album Saviors of Country Music: Live at The American Legion Post 82 was held at The American Legion Post 82.  There was lots of Buck and a fair amount of Stuff to be had. The awesome Brandy Zdan opened the show. It had been a minute since I saw her perform, and it was a good reminder of how good she is.  She was playing songs from her forthcoming album which judging by her performance is going to be amazing.

It's time for our Featured Friday shuffle... The thing I love about playing random shuffles for my daily posts, is the weird things that happen with randomness. If you look at yesterday's shuffle and today's, it might be hard to believe that they came from the same playlist of songs.  Yesterday's shuffle was dominated by  EDM, industrial, punk, and jazz music. Today's is almost exclusively singer-songwriters (albeit each very unique and different).  I don't plan this - it just happens...

Let's shuffle!

Trending Thursday Morning Shuffle - You'll Dance to Anything Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Damn, I'm running short on time, but a couple of quick shout-outs.  First to Mark Huff for a fantastic set to celebrate the release of his new album Stars For Eyes at The 5 Spot.  Some of my favorite people played with him - Dave Coleman on guitar and Lisa Oliver Gray and Julie Chirstensen on back ground vocals.

Ben de la Cour has a great CD release show after that at The Basement.  Chris Moyse opened with his great songs, Becky Warren rocked the house, and Ben de la Cour sounded fantastic as always with a pretty rare full-band set.  The most special moment was at the end of the set when his band left the stage and Ben sang "Uncle Boudreaux Went To Texas". The first time through a couple of people sang along with the chorus, the next a few more, and then it seemed like the whole audience was singing along.

So- it's Thursday - time for Trending Tuesday.  A quick technical note - I discovered some problems with a new music playlist.  There are some older songs included in that playlist. Not sure what happened. The last time I had to recreate playlist I must have added a few extra tracks. No worries, I think it''s fixed now, plus even though a couple of these songs are not "NEW" they are still songs and they are still good. Let's shuffle:

Featured Friday Morning Shuffle - My Compass Broke Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Woohoo! I made it to the end of the week!

Last night was Music City Roots - on the road at 3rd and Lindsley. I sure liked it being about 8 minutes away from my home rather than 30+ minutes.  (Their forthcoming new permanent home will be pretty close, too.).  As for the music, there was nothing at all to complain about. From Jim Lauderdale's opening song to the final jam of  "I Shall Be Released" it was great music all the way through.

Kevin Gordon played some songs from his forthcoming album.  He's one of my favorite songwriters and performers. Backed by his usual stellar band.

Katie Pruitt - I'm not sure if I had seen her before, but she was on my radar.  Now I'm a fan.  She spoke her truth bravely and with grace and without apology.

Lillie Mae - played in a family band for many years, came to Nashville and cut her chops on Lower Broadway, played with Jack White, and she is now signed to Third Man Records. Great songs, well-played by Lillie Mae and her siblings.

DADDY closed the night. Will Kimbrough plus Tommy Womack - you cannot go wrong here. Backed by an incredible band and the golden tones of Lisa Oliver Gray.  The wit and wisdom of Tommy Womack  and the sharply focused songs of Will Kimbrough in a rock and roll setting.

Tonight, I am going to see Pylon Reenactment Society.  The music of the legendary Athens band  Pylon as interpreted by the original lead singer and a new band.  You may recall, E2TG has been featuring the debut EP from Pylon Reenactment Society in recent months. I am stoked for this show!

It's Friday, and we have one final shuffle for the week- it comes from the New Music playlist... let's shuffle!

Fun night last night checking out The Coal Men and The Truehearts at The 5 Spot.  Both are top-notch bands who have deservedly achieved a great reputation in this music city. This was evidenced by the stellar musicians and songwriters in attendance.

It is Thursday and time to dive headlong into the "New Music" playlist for this "Trending Tuesday".  All of these tracks are (more or less) recent additions to my collection, and artists/albums that I waited to feature here at E2TG.

Okay... so I had a long commute to a training class, and I am pressed for time... so I am going to have to be very brief with my descriptions (especially on artist I've written about before and recently).  It will be the same tomorrow....

Here goes...  Sorry to be so brief... more on all of these artist/albums later.
