As we head into the final two months of this most interesting year, with so much uncertainty and so many unresolved problems...on a more personal note, I am - as I do every year about this time - evaluated the State of E2TG.  Long-time readers know that I made some major changes to E2TG at the beginning of this year - changes I have fine-tuned throughout the year. I felt the changes were necessary.  As a result of the changes I have been able to cover more music than ever before, however, the trade-off has been that some music does not get covered as extensively as it might have in the past. 

So, the questions I have to ask myself every year are: What is it that I want E2TG to accomplish? Is E2TG accomplishing that? and How, I can I improve on what I am doing to better meet my goal?  

I don't have the answers yet for 2020, but that is where my head will be...  

For my readers, I have certain hopes - one is that you give at least a cursory listen to the music I present here. I can almost guarantee that you won't like it all or at least not like it all equally... but I think no matter where your musical tastes lie, you will find something you do like. If an artist or song really catches your attention- I would hope you would follow the artist on social media and follow them on your favorite streaming service. If you are able, buy a download or a physical copy of their music, when it is safe in your area and they come to town, go see them live. 

Selfishly, if you do discover new music via E2TG, I would love it if you would tell me about it. 

I do not make a dime from E2TG - that was a conscious decision I made a long time ago (although to be fair, I am not 100% certain I could make much money if I tried). I am also not a publicist or promoter for any artists- although I am grateful for my relationships with many fine publicists. E2TG is an unpaid, secondary job for me - and I am a one-man operation - so it is inevitable that I miss out on featuring some music and my timing may not be ideal. I do what I can. 

I do believe that there is so much amazing music being produced and released these days, and there are many fine websites, blogs etc that cover some of the music. I have always tried to keep E2TG interesting (to me at least) by being a diverse and inclusive as possible. There is not style or genre of music that I won't consider for E2TG. 

Anyway, this is Music City Monday and as a rare treat, we have 100% local music.

We pick back up on this week's Featured Friday recap - with songs 11-15 - the quality of these five songs just goes to show how deep this week's playlist truly is... oh and they are all based in Nashville...

11. "Surrender" by LORE

This is the debut single by the new Nashville band featured Laur Joamets and Laura Reed. Their album is due out next year and was produced by Dave Schools and Vance Powell and features Robbie Crowell and Nick Buda.  A wonderful song.

12. "Mostly Ouroboros" by Andrew Adkins

Yet another track from the forthcoming The Echoist (November 13) by E2TG favorite Andrew Adkins. This one shows off his more rocking side. 

13. "Perfect Job" by Kevin Burnstein

Kevin Burnstein moved to Nashville just head of the pandemic and found himself in a new city at an inopportune time. He made the most of the situation recording this politically charged album and releasing at a most opportune time. 

14. "I Want Out" by Will Kimbrough

By contrast to Kevin Burstein, Will Kimbrough has been a Nashville resident over well over 30 years, but he, too, found himself in an unusual situation. Used to keeping up a busy schedule of touring, recording, and producing - Kimbrough found himself - like so many others - grounded. Spring Break is the result of that time, and it is a most wonderful result. 

15. "Do You Realize" by Tayls

Taylor Cole - who leads Tayls - as been in Nashville longer than Burnstein but far less than Kimbrough - but he, too found his usual actives limited or eliminated by COVID-19. He took the time to record a collection of cover songs - often recording remotely with other Nashville bands and artists. We have covered several of the singles released but now the full Kwar in Teens: A Covers Collection is out. This is a cover of a Flaming Lips song.

The weight of everything has hit me pretty hard this weekend, but I (safely) visited with a friend on Saturday and am planning another safe visit this evening.  I feel so much uncertainty and anxiety lately, and at the same time, I feel like my personal situation is much more stable than some, and so I feel guilty for feeling anxious - which doesn't help anybody. 

I am trying to lean into kindness and love whenever I can. I am trying for find the balance between staying informed and getting drowned in the negativity which is so prevalent. I still believe that we - meaning human beings, Americans, and whatever smaller groups are relevant - need to figure out a way to disagree but seek common ground... but lately it seems as if  "us" and "them" are living in two different realities - where we can't even agree upon the problems let alone begin to address the solutions. My solution is to keep drilling down to the microcosm. Even if that means seeking to find common ground within my own heart and mind.  

We head into another week, and the final days of September.  Today, we recap songs 7-10 of this week's Playlist:

7. "Change" by Tomas Doncker and Amp Fiddler

E2TG favorite Tomas Doncker is back with a fantastic new single, and he is joined by the legendary Detroit musician Amp Fiddler (George Clinton's Parliment and Funkedelic). This is a powerful song from two music industry veteran's. For new readers, Doncker is the founder and CEO of True Groove Records credited with created the global soul genre. He was part of the NYC no wave movements - playing with James Chance and the Contortions. 

8. "FM.a.m." by Buildings and Food

Toronto's Building and Food are back in the shuffle. Their album Up Down Strange Charm was released Friday, and this is the lead track - an instrumental. We covered the debut album Quick Beat Save a couple of years ago. Buildings and Food in Jen Wilson. 

9. "The Lake Worth Monster" by the matthew show

Next up, we have the stunning new single (the first in a series) from Texas based the matthew show. This is the long-running solo project of Matthew Broyles - a Texas native who spent some time in New York City before returning to his home state (Dallas/Fort Worth area to be precise).  I absolutely love this song. 

10. "The Last Dive" by Ethan Gold

We close this section of the Playlist with the latest single from L.A. based musician and songwriter Ethan Gold.  It is his tribute to dive bars with tips of the hat to Lou Reed, David Bowie, and Iggy Pop in New York and author Charles Bukowski in Los Angeles. It is a taste from his forthcoming Earth City album.

Some days, I want to lose hope, but I don't have that luxury.  People are at risk. Not just from COVID-19 (but definitely many, many people are at risk from that - as the U.S. response has continued to be a dismal failure). LGBTQ+ people are at risk of discrimination, violence, and persecution. People of Color - Black and Brown people are at risk for policy brutality and discrimination, and persecution.  People with disabilities are at risk for having their right stripped away, the access to education hampers, and increased marginalization. The poor are at risk of having their meager earning cut - while failed CEOs cash-in on their golden parachutes of having housing ripped away. The list goes on and on.  It is up to us, who are not on these lists or only marginally (if at all) impacted by these things....


Well, we have reached the end of another work week, and that means it is time to unveil another Featured Friday Playlist.  This week's list is 33 songs and exactly 2 hours of music (all new and recently released).  I think I have fulfilled my mission to featured diverse and generally independent music. Hey, it is Friday, we have another all-new Featured Friday Playlist which you can stream below and follow on Spotify.  I have some words about this weeks list below.

In the show Stranger Things, there is the concept of the Upside Down. If you haven't seen the show (I highly recommend it), but basically think of the Upside Down as an alternate world where things are just wrong and off.  (If you've seen the show, sorry for the grossly inadequate explanation). Lately, I feel as if we are all living in some sort of "Upside Down". Obviously, we are facing unprecedented challenges as a world, and we have seen people rise to the occasion in many ways to help their fellow man.

However, as I see it, the darker side of all this is the continued politicalization of everything. I guess this should not surprise me at a time when eating fried chicken or ordering pizza has become a political statement. But, it does surprise me.  Here we have a virus that really doesn't care if you are a Democrat, Republican, Socialist, Libertarian, Communist, Whig, No Nothing, or an Anarchist. In a normal world, we would find a way to at least somewhat unite to face this threat, but here, again, my naivete is showing.

Here is my bottom line. I have friends who have lost parents and spouses to this virus. I have friends who right now have parents in the hospital. And, yes, I have a lot of friends who have been significantly impacted financially by the shutdown. I have been hesitant to say too much, because I am among the very lucky in that I have continued to work uninterrupted  (albeit from home since mid-March).  I want everyone to get back to work. I want to go see live music again and hang out with all my friends. But, I want to do so safely and responsibly so that people do not suffer and die needlessly. So, when I see people running around without masks and ignoring social distancing guidelines, I will say something. Not too "peer pressure" (although if that is what it takes I will do that), but because I know, these people are putting people at risk and they are putting the eventual recovery at risk. 

I think about the protesters - carrying assult-style weapons - who are terrorizing citizens and government leaders. I think about how these same people criticized football players for kneeling. I think about how these people do not protest when an unarmed black man is shot by the police or by so-called vigilantes. How these same people think government should tell a woman what she can or cannot do with her own body. How these same people, care little about the rights of the LGBTQ+ in the face of government sanctioned discrimination.

People in public without masks are extending this crisis and putting innocent people at risk. We have a huge hole in the soul of our government. I think about past leaders of both parties who would have and who are leading better than the current occupant of the White House. I think about the lack of compassion and concern which filters down from the highest levels of power to the dregs of our society. And, it saddens and worries me. But, I also think about the men and women who are ignoring and rejecting this soullessness to find creative ways to help others and each other.

I believe we will get out of the Upside Down world, but I also believe we will be changed by the experience, and I believe to a great extent it is up to us to decide how we are going to be changed.

Here's a little truth for you: periodically, I have moments of doubt about continuing to do E2TG.  It usually gets worse toward the end of the year. Truth is, E2TG takes up a fair amount of my time, and I time is often in limited supply. So, when money gets tight or time gets tight or mercury is in retrograde or whatever, I find myself thinking, maybe now is the time to call it quits.

Then comes December and for the last three years the Earie Awards. To me it was just a silly idea and a way to recap the year, but I have found it means something to many of the recipients. and the responses I have gotten have been very affirming of what I do.

About the money thing: about four years ago, I took a look at if it would be possible to make E2TG a money-making endeavor. I came to the conclusion that I could not do it and have E2TG be what I want it to be.  This is not say that anyone doing what I do who makes money is doing something wrong. Some of my decision was based on my situation.  Anyway, the advantage about it not being about money means I can truly do what I want to do. Which is help bring attention to great music - much of which may fly under the radar.

Since 2014, there has been more of a local Nashville connection, but I have made a point of also featuring music from all over the world.  The fact is, there is likely enough music here in Nashville to sustain a blog, but to me, putting such a limitation would be constricting.

Prior to 2014, to be honest, I was not at all connected to the Nashville music community, and E2TG reflected that as the majority of my posts were about non-Nashville bands.

Which brings us to the Artists and Bands of the Year award - or like I have dubbed them - the Golden Earies.

Some history (skip if you know about the history of E2TG Band/Artist of the Year):

When  E2TG began in May 2011, I had to go out find bands to write about. I would pick one band every week to write about as our "Band of the Week". When the end of 2011 came, I had a list of 30 something Bands of the Week. I got this silly idea to run a "Readers Poll" to select a Band of the Year. It was silly because I honestly didn't have many "Readers" to poll.  So, I ran the poll, and people responded. My page views shot up, it was a tight race, but the poll software I used was pretty wide open and there was some definitely ballot stuffing. Anyway, a band from UK The Mobbs were the winner. 

The Band of the Year as so much fun, I got a better program for running a poll, and I started the Band of the Month poll - this ran for about a year. At the end of 2012, all 12 Bands of the Month plus some Wildcards competed for the Band of the Year.  A great Upstate New York band called Skeletons in the Piano won that award.  By early 2013, I was burned out on the polls. Basically, I didn't want bands expending energy trying to get fans to vote in a silly poll. So, I stopped the polls. For a while, I had Featured Artists every month.  And at the end of 2013, I named then Brooklyn band, The End Men as Band of the Year.

2014 was a year of upheaval in my life and a transition for E2TG. At the end of that year, there was no question that Darrin Bradbury would be Artist of the Year.  It was equally obvious in 2015 that Jon Latham was the choice for Artist of the Year. 

 E2TG continued to grow and expands. 2016 came and I simply could not select one Band or Artist. So, I decided to name 3 - Band of the Year and Artists of the Year - divided between Nashville and non-Nashville.  Brian Wright and Jason P. Krug were named Artists of the Year (Nashville and non-Nashville respectively). Valued Customer from Toronto won Band of the Year. d

Last year, I expanded the award again to 4 (Bands and Artists of the Year - Nashville and non):  Rayvon Pettis and Ladies Gun Club won for Nashville Artist and Band, and Ugggy (of Valued Customer) and The Foresters (won for non-Nashville).  

End of history lesson:

Which brings to the present (or recent past). 2018 was a year of unprecedented growth for E2TG in terms of the number of artists and bands we featured.  In keeping with our new tradition, for the second year in a row, we have four awards (in the categories explained above and below). There is not one factor that leads me to this decision - rather it is a combination of things.

Come on out!  I am so excited about this line-up.  Ben de la Cour is an amazing songwriter.  The End Men are flat out one of my all-time favorite bands and I am so excited to have them in Nashville for the night!  Ted Drozdowski has a 40 year career as a journalist.  He is currently a senior editor at Premier Guitar magazine. A brilliant man and gifted musician - he knows the blues better than anyone I know.  He brings a unique vision to his version of psychedelic blues music - with a brand new power trio - he calls Ted Drozdowski's Psychedelic Circus.

I have created a special playlist - to highlight some of the great music still to come this month.  Here is a taste.

Reminder the Magnolia Roads American Roots Hoedown III kicks off tonight with a pre-party at Dee's.  Details and feature on Taylor Kropp (plus links to the first four parts of my preview and features on other artists can be found HERE.

Among the artists performing tonight at Dee's is Allen Thompson.  I went out (for the first time in over a week) last night for the last night of Allen's residency at The 5 Spot.  Maxwell Putnam opened -and as usual he was awesome.  Allen played with a ten piece band that he dubbed Lady Couch.  The band included Jack Silverman, Clint Maine, and Lilly Winwood, and the Nashville Horns. They played a loose, fun set of originals and choice covers. Pretty awesome for an early show (it would have been awesome regardless of the time).

Now, it is FRIDAY!  We have a very mixed bag of music to "Feature".  So sit back, as we take the week out in style.

My spirits were lifted a bit by a fun evening.  Recorded a future Double Shot show with Sue and Mark. Then, headed to Dee's Country Cocktail Lounge for another awesome Madison Guild Monday. This time hosted by E2TG favorite Andrew Adkins.  In addition to Adkins, the night saw a great performance by Daryl Dasher - who I had seen before, and  a few folks I had a not seen Ariana Hodes, Mike Wheeler, and Bri Murphy.  A couple of performers were unable to be there, so in typical Nashville/Madison fashion, some special guests helped fill the bill. Bryant Carter (who I saw for the first time) and three E2TG favorites (including two past E2TG Artists of the Year (Nick Nace, Jon Latham, and Darrin Bradbury).  All that and I great hang with some awesome folks.

I have a ton of music that I need to get added to my new music playlist, I will hopefully get to that tonight.  In the meantime, let's clear some space.

Whew! It's Friday.

Last night, I was at The 5 Spot for the early show, and I caught Will Payne Harrison and Tommy Womack.  I had previously seen Will at Dee's one Monday night for just a few songs, so it was good to see an even longer set.   Tommy Womack was...well he was Tommy Womack. Backed by a great band including John Jackson on guitar. He played some of his best known songs, "Betty was Black, Willie was White" "90 Miles An Hour Down a Dead-End Street" some new songs, a Daddy song, and even a song from Government Cheese. He ended the set with his version of "Penny Lane".

As always, Nashville has a ton of great live music - every single night. Get out and find something that interests you.

Mark Robinson is playing tomorrow night at The 5 Spot.  He is hands down one of my favorite entertainers in Nashville. His live shows are just no-frills great music.

Woohoo! I made it to the end of the week! 

Last night was Music City Roots - on the road at 3rd and Lindsley. I sure liked it being about 8 minutes away from my home rather than 30+ minutes.  (Their forthcoming new permanent home will be pretty close, too.).  As for the music, there was nothing at all to complain about. From Jim Lauderdale's opening song to the final jam of  "I Shall Be Released" it was great music all the way through. 

Kevin Gordon played some songs from his forthcoming album.  He's one of my favorite songwriters and performers. Backed by his usual stellar band.

Katie Pruitt - I'm not sure if I had seen her before, but she was on my radar.  Now I'm a fan.  She spoke her truth bravely and with grace and without apology.

Lillie Mae - played in a family band for many years, came to Nashville and cut her chops on Lower Broadway, played with Jack White, and she is now signed to Third Man Records. Great songs, well-played by Lillie Mae and her siblings.

DADDY closed the night. Will Kimbrough plus Tommy Womack - you cannot go wrong here. Backed by an incredible band and the golden tones of Lisa Oliver Gray.  The wit and wisdom of Tommy Womack  and the sharply focused songs of Will Kimbrough in a rock and roll setting.   

Tonight, I am going to see Pylon Reenactment Society.  The music of the legendary Athens band  Pylon as interpreted by the original lead singer and a new band.  You may recall, E2TG has been featuring the debut EP from Pylon Reenactment Society in recent months. I am stoked for this show!

It's Friday, and we have one final shuffle for the week- it comes from the New Music playlist... let's shuffle!

Yesterday, I posted a show alert for Erica Blinn, Andrew Leahey, and Liz Brasher at The 5 Spot.  Well, I went to that show last night, and it was fantastic. Saw so many good friends.

Liz Brasher is a force of nature. This was my first time seeing her, and she was amazing.
Erica Blinn is a powerhouse performer. Her set included a duet with Andrew Leahey on "Stop Dragging My Heart Around".
Andrew Leahey was backed by Jon Latham and the rest of his regular band (which also included Leahey).  This set included a cover of the Echo and the Bunnymen song "Lips Like Sugar" which took me back to my college days.

Tonight, I am checking out Music City Roots on the Road as they hit 3rd and Lindsley with a lineup that includes DADDY (Will Kimbrough and Tommy Womack), Kevin Gordon, Lillie Mae, and Katie Pruitt. Should be a fantastic show.

Back to our New Music playlist for Trending Tuesday. By the way, according to Facebook's on this date, it seems like two years ago was my first ever "Trending Tuesday" post.  Anyway, only four songs in the shuffle today (one was over 13 minutes longs). So, let's shuffle.

Fun night last night checking out The Coal Men and The Truehearts at The 5 Spot.  Both are top-notch bands who have deservedly achieved a great reputation in this music city. This was evidenced by the stellar musicians and songwriters in attendance.

It is Thursday and time to dive headlong into the "New Music" playlist for this "Trending Tuesday".  All of these tracks are (more or less) recent additions to my collection, and artists/albums that I waited to feature here at E2TG.

From his bio:  Ben de la Cour has lived a different kind of life. After growing up in Brooklyn, he set out to see the world as an amateur boxer, bartender, and agricultural worker. He lived in Havana, Paris, London, Los Angeles, and New Orleans before finally settling in Nashville. It was at Nashville’s Greenland Sound that de la Cour recorded the eleven songs of perfectly crafted Americanoir that make up his second album “Midnight in Havana”.

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle - Regression: As a Path to Progress Mix

I haven't counted in a while, but I believe there are over 50 bands/artists that we have featured here at Ear to the Ground.  This includes spin-off bands, solo projects etc. As we mentioned the other day, once we feature a band or artist here, we consider them family and try our dead-level best to keep up with their progress and new projects.  So far in 2013, the projects seem to be coming faster than our ability to keep up with them, but we're trying... This week, we received an invite to the release party for the new (and long anticipated) solo CD by The Alternates front-man Spencer Livingston. Now we get word that preorders for Christopher Paul Stelling's new album are underway. Not only that, but none other than Spin.com has the first single up...

Listen, I pick the songs which go into my MP3 player (duh), and so I get the credit and/or the blame for the Shuffles that some up (even if it is the Shuffle Monster than actually selects the order and timing of the songs).  All I can say, is today we have a damn good selection of songs - new music from old friends, a rock and roll classic and other cool tunes to help brighten your mid-week.  

As always, the You Tube playlist embedded at the bottom of the post includes the songs from the Pre-Shuffle and Shuffle (if possible) or at least a close representation from the same artist.

Pre-shuffle:   Another track from the Self-titled John the Conqueror album - brought to our attention by The End Men (there I said it - again).  We also have another great song from Ben de la Cour.  We have a track from Nashville band Kopecky Family Band's 2010 album The Disaster. Special Note to the person who keeps donating KFB albums to Goodwill: 1. You obviously are either dying or lack good sense and 2. Please keep it up.  Our good friend, the audaciously talented Elwood Kuddles (aka Killing Kuddles) just released a new EP called Odd Man Out.  We have our first taste in a track called Save Me a Seat.  Finally, we close out the Pre-Shuffle with one of the two older songs released by The Danbury Lie just ahead of their new album '?' - Rhode Island Summer is a great song that sounds nothing like the other music we've heard from this band.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle - Avant Guard Dogs Mix

It's festival announcement time. We'd love to hear from our Readers about which festival lineup you are most excited to see. I'll be honest for most of the major festivals, probably 90% of the lineup seems almost obligatory.  By that, I don't necessarily mean it's bad music, just that there seems to be a core group of bands who you know are going to be at every major festival.  So, we're most interested in any artists who you were surprised to see on a festival line-up.  

Let's get to it:  This morning, we had four songs in our pre-shuffle shuffle and four song in our Shuffle shuffle.

Pre-shuffle:  we continue to dig on the Dog Without Warning album Go Girl.  Today, we heard Pacific Time Zone which more of an alt-country feel to it then some of the other songs we've heard from the album.  We also had another great song from the self-titled You and Me album. Well, we stand here at the tail-end of the first quarter or 2013.  One thing that regular readers of this blog may have noticed is that we have yet to have Featured Artist or Band of the Month or anything like that.  As this year got underway, and due to a variety of circumstances, we decided to step back and decide how we wanted to proceed. I think we've worked it out, and stay tuned.  In the next couple of days, we will be rolling out a brand new feature....

In the meantime, we moved around some songs and added a pretty cool sampler to our current playlist.  Pre-shuffle we had a couple more songs from the You and Me album by You and Me (Val and James). Plus we had a classic from Mr. Nick Lowe (which is included in the Playlist at the bottom of this post), The Harmonica Lewinskies (also represented in the Playlist) and Southern Culture on the Skids.

Whew! It's been awhile hasn't it?  Been around the world and back... or at least around Georgia and back.  Got back into Nashville in time to catch The End Men and The Slaughterhouse Chorus at fooBar last night. Word to the wise, if you get the chance to see either or both of these bands live, take it.  It was so amazingly awesome to finally meet Matthew and Liv from The End Men in person. They definitely rocked the house.  And yes this means I will have to tag The End Men... again... they are currently the second most tagged term on Ear to the Ground.

But, let's get back to what we do best... or most... or something... Pre-shuffle featured: Secret County (which I couldn't find represented on YouTube, NY Dolls, Jill Sobule and John Doe, Chad VanGaalen, Japandroids, The Grisly Hand, Phil Norman, Little and Ashley and Tim Lee 3.
