Wide Open Wednesday Shuffle - Summertime Thing Mix

Trying a new thing here at Ear to the Ground.... every Wednesday (or at least this Wednesday... or maybe some Wednesday's) I am going to Shuffle up all the songs in my phone's memory and see what happens...  Usually, the Morning Shuffles come from a playlist called "Current Stuff" which includes... well current stuff and basically all the recent adds plus some random stuff to keep things interesting.  Songs are moved off of the playlist as they are featured and new music is added all the time (as memory allows).  Beyond that playlist, I have approximately 4,000+ songs stored in my phone at any given time. As you might expect, it's a weird collection of some really interesting music that I've collected in various ways over the years.  I have to say, the fact that Mary Gauthier and Chuck Prophet were the first two songs that came up... I am feeling optimistic.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle - Unfinished Business 2013 Mix

Well, it's a brand new year, and I already have some great stuff queued up to get 2014 off to a good beginning.  But, before we dive headlong into the new, there is some unfinished business - namely more 2013 favorites I wanted to offer up.  So today and tomorrow, I will wrap up the end of 2013 Mix and then Monday January 6 -  E2TG will kick off 2014 with a rousing start.

I've decided that the subtitle of this end of the year wrap-up should be: "If you think music sucked in 2013, then you were listening to the wrong music."

I humbly offer #E2TG has your antidote to the bad music blues....

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle - Melon Farmer Mix

Let's jump back into the Shuffles with an extended mix of music.

As usual, time is short - so no dilly-dallying.  Which is a shame, really, because I am so good at dilly-dallying....

JUMP to the tunage!

Friday Morning Music Shuffle - Taking It Up a Notch Mix

Oh, hear this Robert Zimmerman
I wrote a song for you
About a strange young man called Dylan
With a voice like sand and glue
Some words of truthful vengeance
They could pin us to the floor
Brought a few more people on
And put the fear in a whole lot more"
David Bowie

Happy 72nd Birthday Robert Zimmerman and also to that strange young man named Dylan...

Well, well, well...  I thought we had covered a lot of musical ground yesterday, but we may have just topped ourselves.  You be the judge.

Pre-shuffle:

We start things out with a performance of a Ukrainian folk song.

1.  "ŠžŠ¹ ŠŸŠ¾Š»ŠµŃ‡ŠŗŠ¾, Поле (Oj Polechko, Pole" by Katarina Ljahovic, Mike Romaniak, Patrick Power and Stephen Kreuger (by the way, Patrick Power is better known to E2TG readers as 1/2 of Valued Customer, and he may well be a musical genius in my book)

2. "Old Friend" by Sea Wolf (another cool track from the L.A. based Indie Rock band who take their name from a Jack London novel)

3.  "This is a Notice" by Mic Harrison and the High Score (This is Knoxville Rock! Mic Harrison was a member of the V-Roys and Superdrag before teaming up with The High Score.  This song is pretty damn awesome raver.)

4.  "Psycho Killer" (B-Side featuring Arthur Russell) by Talking Heads (a recently released alternate take of the Talking Heads classic featuring a well utilized Cello)

5. "Only Sixteen" by Craig Douglas (1959 cover of a Sam Cooke song by a UK Pop singer)

6. "Boys Keep Me Up at Night" by Jeanette Lynne (another gem from the You've Got Me album)

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle - Once Bitten, Once Bitten Mix

Time moves on.  We walk unaided into the abyss. Sail our ships closer to the sun. Life become a series of movements, of stanzas. We stand alone and yet never truly alone...

We have some cool tunes to refresh, reinvigorate and renew your damaged innocence. Or something... we have cool tunes...

Pre-Shuffle:

"A Little Bit Longer" by Grass Root Kids (a nifty song by this awesome new band from Nashville)

"Red Light Love" by Those Darlins (Awesome song and check out the cool video in the playlist below.  Nashville - Those Darlins will be playing at Eastside Hootenanny this Saturday and this will the first and only opportunity to hear some new songs from the next Those Darlins album which is due out in the Fall.)

"Peace and Quiet" by Waxahatchee (love this song. The band is from Illinois.)

"Waters of Babylon" by Valued Customer (first of two from our friends Patrick J. Power and Ugggy).

"Big Blue Wave" (Alternative Mix) by Hey Ocean! (Hey Ocean! are a Pop/Indie band from Vancouver, BC).

"The Drinking Song" by Valued Customer (Yes! Just Yes! and Very Yes!)

"Nine Lives to Rigel Five" by Game Theory (More Game Theory with a Star Trek reference - I am a equal opportunity geek)

Monday Morning Music Shuffle - Swoony Day Mix

I'm back after an extended and mostly rainy weekend.  Dreary, drizzly morning drive and walk, made more than tolerable by the superlative collection of fine tunes and tracks. By the way, my Current Month Playlist that I shuffle up for the Morning Shuffle had dropped to about 150 late last week, but over the weekend it has skyrocketed up above 200 again. We'll begin chipping away, as we present some Pre-Shuffle and Shuffle Shuffle tunes for this, the 6th day of May.

Pre-Shuffle:

Jeanette Lynne's 11 second "Intro" to her fabulous album You've Got Me serves has the intro into today's Pre-shuffle.

Kyle Andrews  "Connecting the Dots"

Set in Stone doing "The Way I Felt" (a Twitter discovery from this weekend)

Game Theory "Toby Ornette"

Those Darlins "Glass to You"

Holy Grail "Ride the Void" - Why not.. some infectious Metal via Amazon's Free Music from Rising Artists

Game Theory "Rolling with the Moody Girls"

The next song served as a transition into the Shuffle - and we included it after the JUMP

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle - Crazy, Crazy World Mix

We've reached the final day of April.  This month has flown by, but as I mentioned yesterday, it has also been jam packed with great music. We will be reformulating our current month playlist to prepare for May, and soon we'll be presenting a recap of April and adding some great artists to the Ear to the Ground "Family". In the meantime, we have some great music to present today.

Pre-Shuffle:

1.  "The Blood Beyond" by Skeletons in the Piano from Please Don't Die - one of the albums we featured this month.
2. "Watch Who You're Calling Space Garbage Meteor Mouth" by Game Theory.  18 seconds of weirdness off the album Lolita Nation.
3. "High on the Skyline" by The New Mendicants from Australia 2013 E.P.  - Joe Pernice of the Pernice Brothers and Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub.  This is an amazingly lovely song.
4. "Free to Fly" by Markus Rill
5. "In the Rain" by The Danbury Lie from ? (2013) - We love this band and their new record is strong in all the right ways.  Glad to feature another song as April comes to an end.
6. "Dripping With Looks" by Game Theory - a slightly longer song from the Lolita Nation album.  Happy to close out the month with a few more Game Theory songs.

Let's dive into our final shuffle of April 2013 after the jump:

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle - Strange Days Indeed Mix

We got five songs, and  a mea culpa - so let's get to it.

Rise to the Sun is a track on the Boys & Girls album by one of the most buzz-worthy bands around, The Alabama Shakes.  If you've been hearing the buzz (or even if you haven't) and haven't gotten around to checking out this band - do so now.

Well, I loved yesterday's track by Those Darlins so much, I had to grab another. Be Your Bro is also on the Screws Get Loose album. Gender-blurring and fun.

We go deeper into the fantastic Young Man in America  album by Anais Mitchell. Venus is our track today.

Stuck in RED  is by a band we just heard from this week called Larisa & the Raindoggs who hail from Austin, Texas - and play some mean rhythm and soul music.  Self-described as a shot of Tom Waits and a twist of Snoop.  The song is on their album One Armed Bandits which came out in January.

And finally we come to my mea culpa.  This was bound to happen sooner or later, and frankly, I'm surprised it is just now happening.  I add music to my MP3 player from a variety of sources, and although I am very thoughtful and deliberate about what I add, some files do not convert on my MP3 player with the album and/or artist information. Usually, when this happens, I can backtrack and figure out who it is and where I got it.  However, today, I have a track called Happy Song with no album name or artist name listed on my MP3 player.  I spent way too much time trying to track down this song through some of my usual sources, but alas, I have come up empty.  It's a really cool song - up tempo indie rock. If it's your song or you know who did the song, please let me know.  Otherwise, I will look at the original file when I get home and post an update.

UPDATE:  Mystery solved.  Happy Song is by FallsStart at band who are from Honolulu, HI.
They have an album called Our Summer which is due out in August.  Here's a video for you:

Monday Morning Music Shuffle - Remnant Mix

Another week started...  Hope all if well in your worlds.

This week, we continued to highlight some of the more recent additions to our MP3 player.

First up, we have an excellent country/garage band from right here in Music City USA. Those Darlins play lovely, gritty music for the new South. We have the title track off their latest album, Screws Get Loose. From what I understand, the band first met at the awesome Southern Girls Rock & Roll camp, which makes this an excellent time to give a shout out to that outstanding organization.  We had the chance to speak to them briefly at Record Store Day and we've had the chance to read up on them since.  SGRRC have been around for ten years, and they provide a valuable and empowering service to our community.

Next up, we have Asbury Park, New Jersey band The Parlor Mob with a song from their 2008 album And You Were a Crow. The song today is Can't Keep No Good Boy Down.

And finally, we dig deeper into the Sondre Lerche album we recently found at the Goodwill store.  Faces Down came out in 2002, and our song today is called Sleep on Needles.
