As I mentioned yesterday, I started working from home today. I know that I am extremely fortunate as compared to many people that I know and love.

Like, I am sure most of you, I am overwhelmed by how this virus and the necessary steps taken to try to curtail it have affected nearly every aspect of life as I know it.

For right now, support each other as best you can. Take necessary precautions, don't panic, don't be a jerk, ask for help if you need it, love one another.

I'll be here sending out music as best as I can...

Random Notes: 

I am still trying to get my bearings after a whirlwind week and weekend and jumping into this week with both feet in the fire (to mix at least two metaphors). 

Thinking a lot about the state of the world and the state of our nation and how the last three years have been so exhausting and demoralizing. The evil of one person or even a group of people does not surprise me. I know that evil exists in this world, but what has been so disheartening is the large number of people who have supported and enabled this evil. 

I wrote in this space for a while about everything that was going on, and then I stopped. I am not sure if I can articulate why I stopped. Maybe it was that I felt I was preaching to the choir.  I think for a time I thought that some people just weren't aware of what was happening.  That their were white supremacists in the highest levels of the government, that the people in charge of protecting our most precious resources (people and the environment etc.) were hell-bent on destroying what they were supposed to protect. 

I have come to accept that their are a significant number of people who know exactly what is going on and either support these cruel policies or choose to ignore them. And that is what has been so disheartening.  I still maintain that their is a place for healthy debate on conservative vs. progressive viewpoints. But the fight we have today is not conservative vs. progressive or Democrat vs. Republican.  It is a fight for the heart of our country - for our existence as a democracy against the rising tide of totalitarianism. 

To be honest, the Democratic Presidential nomination process has been especially disheartening. At a time, when we should be single-minded in our goal - we are divided. People are treating candidates as if they are on equal footing with the current occupant of the White House. That is not the case. 

The purpose of the primaries and the caucuses should be to find our best candidate. If you support one candidate over the others, tell me why. Convince me, but do it without tearing down the other candidates.  One of this field will be the Democratic nominee and whether that person is our choice or not, we have to be committed to getting that person elected. 

I do not claim to know whether we need the most progressive person or the most centrists. Certainly, there are no end of people who seem to know. Fine. Convince all of us. For the LGTBQ+ community, for communities of color, for the disabled, women - this election matters and is a matter of life and death.  Act like it, vote like it.

I am  gearing up for the 2nd episode of Greetings from Nashville - my new morning show on WXNA. It will air tomorrow morning at 6AM on WXNA 101.5FM and wxnafm.org. So - in reference to my long pre-shuffle post yesterday, music is what sustains me when the world gets me down. Music has saved my life. Music is not just important to me, it is vital to my existence.

On top of all of the other worldly problems, I am troubled by the devaluing of music by our culture. Technological advancements which should be (and in many cases are) a boon to the goal of getting music out to the people - has - like many parts of society - fallen into the hands of a few "power" players - who exploit the true creators to line their own pocket.

The people I know who make music - mostly do so because they have to - not in absence of other skills but it is a drive. A model has to be developed that adequately rewards the creators. The so-called music business is a microcosm for the rest of society. The gap between the haves and the have-nots.

I do not have a solution, but I think there is one out there. The question is - what will motivate those who are benefiting from the current system?

So, for most of us - who love music- the call is to act on whatever scale we are able. Go to shows, buy merch, buy music in a physical format - even if you mostly listen to electronic formats, if there is a tip jar for the band - use it. Share music!  Social media companies intentionally limit the reach of artists and others - to encourage "boosted" posts. It even happens to E2TG - once my Facebook page like count reached a certain level - fewer people saw my posts. I don't make a dime from E2TG, so it doesn't make sense for me to pay to boost my posts. The only way to combat this is from everyone to share posts. _ I don't just mean E2TG (although that would be nice), but also posts by your favorite bands.

It has been a rough week in many ways - my spirit is low and my temper has been short. I'm combating all that with music and creativity.

It is Wednesday, and that is the day, we do what I call the "Wild Wednesday" shuffle.  A shuffle derived from all the songs saved to my phone.  Let's see what happens!

Last night was the first ever WXNA Holiday Party - it was a swell affair and affirmed how lucky I am to be a part of this amazing group of people.

After that, I headed to The Basement for The Big Dumb CD Release Party.  It is hard for me to relate how much I love this amazingly talented group of musicians. In addition, not one, not two, but three past E2TG Artists of the Year were special guests for the show.  Rayvon Pettis, Darrin Bradbury, and Jon Latham.  I would put good money that this will not be the last you've heard about The Big Dumb this "Earie" season.

It's the end of the first full-week of December, and it is Day 3 of the 2018 Earie Awards.  The Earies are kind of like the Grammys - except they are nothing like the Grammys.

Today for our shuffle, we journal back to a more innocent time - March  2018......

Had a great time at Dee's last night.  It is always a pleasure to see Wild Ponies - to me they are the best of what Nashville has to offer - both musically and as people.   They were fantastic last night.  Also on the bill was Suzanne Harper and Lindsay White.  Suzanne Harper is from the band Talks Like June. You may recall that about three years back, I humble bragged about getting to go to the famous Cash Cabin Studio - built by Johnny Cash and now run by John Carter Cash.  The event that brought me there was for Talks Like June. It was my first time seeing her since that day, and she was great. It was my first time (period) seeing Lindsay White. I really enjoyed her performance. Music was great, the hangs were great.

Tonight, I will make another pilgrimage to The 5 Spot for Tim Carroll's Rock n Roll Happy Hour.  The best free event (hell the best event (period)) in Nashville.

Well, we've made it to end of another week.  We dive back into our "new music" playlist.

Bee Taylor:  One of Nashville's most electrifying artists, Bee Taylor, will be joining us - backed by her stellar band!  Described as a cross between Amy Winehouse and Tom Waits - if you've never seen Bee Taylor live - you have to experience to fully appreciate her power!

Joanna Barbera:  Opening our final week will be one of my favorite local songwriters. Joanna Barbera recently had a song prominently featured in the CBS television series Criminal Minds. Her most recent EP Imago is a favorite of mine. Get there early to catch her set!

In case you missed the last two posts, E2TG will be celebrating our first 7 years with a Residency every Thursday in June at The 5 Spot.  These EARLY shows kick off at 6:00pm, and we have stacked line-ups every week, so you will want to get there early.

Onto Week 3!  I am stoked to get the opportunity to present two of my favorite bands and one of my favorite songwriters in one incredible night.  I am especially excited to be able to showcase the diversity of talent making music in this city.

Microwave Mountain: With raucous energy and rocking good vibes, Microwave Mountain are red hot right now.  On the heels of the 4/20 - release show for Sick Licks, Jamie Timm and company will be playing a pretty rare early show. You will not want to miss this.

The Coal Men:  Led by guitarist, songwriter, producer extraordinaire Dave Coleman, The Coal Men have been making music together since 1999.  Their latest album is called Pushed to the Side. They are definitely one of my favorite local bands - great songs and a great sound. Editors note: The Poster above erroneously lists "The Coal Men" has "The Coalmen" - I apologize for the error and will be fixing the graphic as soon as I am able.

Brian Milligram:  Opening the night will be one of my favorite songwriters here in town, and one that many of you may be seeing for the first time. Be sure to get their early - Milligram brings a punk spirit to his songs.  His sometimes caustic nature belies a tenderness that comes through his lyrics.

Reminder the Magnolia Roads American Roots Hoedown III kicks off tonight with a pre-party at Dee's.  Details and feature on Taylor Kropp (plus links to the first four parts of my preview and features on other artists can be found HERE.

Among the artists performing tonight at Dee's is Allen Thompson.  I went out (for the first time in over a week) last night for the last night of Allen's residency at The 5 Spot.  Maxwell Putnam opened -and as usual he was awesome.  Allen played with a ten piece band that he dubbed Lady Couch.  The band included Jack Silverman, Clint Maine, and Lilly Winwood, and the Nashville Horns. They played a loose, fun set of originals and choice covers. Pretty awesome for an early show (it would have been awesome regardless of the time).

Now, it is FRIDAY!  We have a very mixed bag of music to "Feature".  So sit back, as we take the week out in style.

Marching on into the week. The news of the world continues to depress and terrify me. I continue to take comfort in good music and knowing there are good people in this world.

Speaking of good music, I am inching closer to beginning to reveal the bands/artists who will be playing the E2TG 7th Anniversary Residency (Thursdays in June at The 5 Spot). I will tell you that we will have a current E2TG Artist of the Year and a past E2TG Band of the Year. Plus lots of surprises. Stay tuned!  Once the lineup is revealed, I will not shut up about it.

It is Tuesday, and that is the day, we dig into our "New Music" playlist and shuffle it up to see what comes to the surface that we will say is "Trending" on E2TG.

Reminded again how inspired I am by people with bold creative ideas - not only in music but in other forms of art. People who have a vision of something - regardless of their experience with that thing - and who pursue that vision with all of their heart. I think one of my weaknesses is self-doubt combined with a tendency to put too much stock in naysayers - people who tell you why you shouldn't or cant' do something.

My goal is to follow my visions no matter what. I'd rather fail spectacularly while attempting something big than succeed mildly while settling for something small.
