Heading into the last week of July.  Life can be both wonderful and overwhelming at the same time.  I keep looking for a pause button but whenever circumstances force me to pause, I am uneasy and anxious to get moving again.  So, I try to find peace in the unease and take comfort knowing that anything that doesn't get done will either get done in its own time or didn't need to get done after all. 

Featured Friday Playlist recap (part 2) (songs 11-14):

11. "Levels" by Ifjams 

Chicago-based producer and rapper who I saw perform on Record Store Day at The Groove.  He has a track on the RSD release Kiss Your Ass Goodbye (John Prine tribute) put out by Nashville's Devil's Tower Records. 

12. "Sun" by Emma-Jean Thackray

UK singer-songwriters excellent Yellow album just hit streaming services. One of my favorites on 2021 so far.

13. "Name" by MESSER

Dallas Texas based rock band with this recent cover of the Goo Goo Dolls single. 

14. "Groove" by JAiRUS

And we close this section of music with the title track from the forthcoming new EP from this Maryland native and L.A. based, classically trained singer-songwriter.  A fantastic way to take us out of the recap for today. Listen for "Groove" on Ear to the Ground radio tomorrow morning.

So, I got a new pair of glasses yesterday.  For those of you who don't wear glasses, it is a big deal. 1. the new glasses potentially change your face - which is a big deal - although my quarantine beard is probably a bigger deal, and the new frames aren't dramatically different from the old ones. 2. If your prescription has changed, there is a moment of clarity when you first put on the new glasses - as if the world seems brand new. It is a passing feeling - at most lasting a day or two - but it is...er um... eye opening. 

Seeking improved clarity is a worthy goal whether talking physical eyesight or something more philosophical. The world can be so confusing with conflicting messages bombarding us all day/every day. People try to cast doubt on facts, you wonder who you can trust, news is filtered through the lens of people with agendas. Even with the unfortunate right/left, red/blue, conservative/liberal dichotomy, even if you align yourself with one side or the other, there are factions on either side of the ideological aisle who offer different perspectives.  And you are left wondering what is real, what is truth.

Forgetting politics for a minute... looking at diet - one message will say - eat "this" instead of "that" but then a different voice will say - well "this" is no good, you need to eat "something else" or you actually do need to eat "that' because it is not as bad as people say. 

So, we all need more clarity in a variety of ways, so that is why - that momentary clarity of a new pair of glasses is so refreshing. Maybe, we all need to get a new pair of metaphorical glasses on a regular basis...

21. "Black Summer" by The Red Step

We start things off with the first single from the eponymous debut album by The Red Step from Belgrade, Serbia.  The band features Tobias Nathaniel from The Black Heart Procession. I am digging the garage/post-punk sound here. Can't wait to hear more. 

22. "Mama's Got a Gig" by New Yeller

Next up, we have an absolutely wonderful track from New Yeller who are from Vermont and Brooklyn.  The song - written by the band's singer Laura Schweizer and features a gorgeous violin solo from 17 year Charlotte Knutsen.  Zachariah Hickman (Josh Ritter, Ray Lamontagne, and Barnstar!) guests on upright bass. 

23. "Seeing Shapes" by Teen Creeps

Teen Creeps are a Belgian three-piece band with an affinity for fuzzy guitars and fast-paced drums. This is their latest single. A great addition to the Playlist. 

24. "Grand Scheme of Things" by David Woodard

Next up, we have the title track to the new EP by Nashville based jangle pop artist David Woodard. Really digging this. 

25. "Fascination" by Watch Clark 

Watch Clark is an electronic musician from Seattle. We covered the previous EP back in the Spring. This hard-hitting track is a great way to close out this segment of music.

 By way of a Featured Friday Bonus Track, we have the previously unreleased solo demo of the title track to East Nashville poet-laureate (I believe it is an unofficial title, but damn well should be official) Kevin Gordon's landmark Down to the Well album. The album version of this track features the one and only Lucinda Williams.  Here is the song, stripped down to his majesty.  The whole album is available exclusively on Bandcamp - which makes it a good time to remind you that Bandcamp is waiving revenue sharing today, so that all purchases benefit the artists.  You can access the Bandcamp page for the album via the embedded player below.

And I am back!  Sorry for the extended and unexpected hiatus - it could not be helped, but I am happy to be back.

Last Wednesday, just before everything went down, I started a blog post - including a shuffle.  I didn't get to finish it, but here it is in all of its unfinished glory! Lost Shuffle!

Moving on.  Even though I was out of blogging commission, I have managed to keep up with the Featured Friday Playlist.  All the more reason to "Follow" the Playlist on Spotify and check back every Friday (usually updated sometime after midnight).

This week's list included some favorites and at least one new name to us.

New and recent music from Adrian + Meredith (from their Live at The 5 Spot Release), Tom Schreck - from his recent album Schrexit, Brian Wright & the SneakUps (from Lapse of Luxury), Marchelle Bradanini (aka Ponyboy - but releasing her first music under her own name), our old friends Sci-Fi Romance, Nashville singer-songwriter Paul Nelson, Cup, Eli Cook (who played our Residency in 2018), and Watch Clark.

By the way, apologies to everyone who has sent me music in the last couple of weeks. In some cases, I responded, but I didn't know I would be out as long as I was.  Be patient, and for those who had time sensitive submissions - I am truly sorry.

Time marches on... we are now into the final week of April, and although so the decision to start reopening some things is happening in some areas, we are still a long way off from many music related functions from opening, and that is assuming that we do not have a resurgence in cases.

I know many people and small businesses are suffering. For those us who are faring relatively well, the need can be overwhelming.  My best advice is to support the venues and artists that mean the most to you and do so in a way that makes sense for your situation. I have tried (emphasis on tried) to match my giving to the money I would have been spending if I was able to out. Everyone's situation is different, and so there is no wrong answer here.

Mostly, what I want my readers to hear - is that regardless of the orders and openings in your area, it is important to be safe and to still stay home as much as you can.  No matter which models or philosophies that you chose to believe, it is clear that we are not at the end of this pandemic, and the possibility exists for a comeback. At a minimum follow the guidelines of health officials regarding masks and social distancing. We are all restless and eager to get back to "normal", but to rush this will only delay things and will likely cost people their health and their lives.

Meanwhile, I am going to do my part to feature some new and not so new music here from the comfort of my home.

I hope everyone had a good weekend. We are back, and today mark's the return of Music City Monday.  To refresh your memory. This is a massive, every expanding playlist of new and not-so-new songs by artists with a connection to Nashville (and occasionally artist who I thought had a connection to Nashville but didn't - oops!).  The Shuffle is below.

Some notes about this new incarnation of E2TG: 

1. Show listings: I have attempted, in the past, to compile a gig guide/concert calendar, whatever, and found it was too daunting a task.  Typically, I highlight upcoming events that are on my mind. If you want an event featured, please e-mail me at e2tgmusic@gmail.com and I will do what I can. Provide as much information as you can (Who, what, when, where, how much, what time etc.) and a graphic if you have one.

2. Featured Friday: A Spotify Playlist that refreshes every week - updates usually on Friday. Please follow. Basically, a compilation of new and recently released music that has caught my attention.

3. Release listing: This is a non-comprehensive list of recent, current, and upcoming releases (singles, EPs, and LPs).  If your release is not listed (even I have know you very well) e-mail me at e2tgmusic@gmail.com with the name and release date. If you have a preferred link - send me that. 
I compiled the list from recent e-mails and then have been adding releases as they occur to me. I plan to add links (if available) soon. Eventually, I will start rotating off the older "recent" releases, but right now, I am catching up from the end of the year. I also will likely started adding some sort of commentary/mini-review (but not really)/information about some of the releases.


Events of Note: 

Tonight, Madison Guild Monday at Dee's Country Cocktail Lounge will be hosted by Maynard and the Musties and featuring Javi Jones (of The Big Dumb), Steve Knudson, Val Levine, Paisley Fields, Luella, and more.

Tomorrow night is my birthday, and I will celebrating at The 5 Spot.  The early show is week two of the India Ramey Residency with Tim Easton, Wild Ponies, and a Special Surprise Guest.  $2 Tuesday follows with Anana Kaye, Derek Hoke and ? (but it is always a wonderful lineup). Come hang with me if you are in town.

Well, we are in the midst of a heatwave. Heat index is expected to be over 100 the next two days. I don't have much in the way of relief to offer, but I do have some cool tunes. Get it cool... Sorry, the heat is getting to me.

Anyway, it's Monday, and we have a  sweet Music City Monday shuffle - so let's go!

"Buddha Blues" by Will Kimbrough

Will Kimbrough doesn't seem to know the term idleness. When he isn't producing albums (like the Steve Poltz album we have been featuring), he is backing people like Emmylou Harris (and playing on at least two albums we have been featuring - ESOEBO and Peter Rogan's latest albums).  And somehow, he found time to record and release his own album.  I Like It Down Here was released earlier this year, and it is a worthy addition to an impressive discography.  I have been a fan of Kimbrough's music for over 30 years going back to his band Will and the Bushmen. Our lives intersected in the 90s through our daughters, and I ran into his last week at the CD Release party for Amy Speace's new album (oh yeah, he played on that one, too!)

"Joy, the Mechanical Boy" by Self

Nashville had a thriving music scene in the 1980s - with bands like Jason and the Scorchers, Walk the West, Royal Court of China, Raging Fire, In Pursuit, Shadow 15, The Movement and more playing great live shows and flirting with national success.  By the early 90's, that scene had pretty much dissipated  - some folks moved on to songwriting, some moved away, and a few kept plugging away.  By the mid/early 90's, Music City was due to for a revival, and to a great extent that revival came by way of Matt Mahaffey and his band Self.  Mahaffey helped form Spongebath Records (with Seth Timbs, and Rick Williams), and that label became a center for music not only in the Murfreesboro/Nashville area, but for the entire South. This is the opening track from the second album by Self called The Half-Baked Serenade which was released on Spongebath in 1996.

"Little Old Town" by Eric Brace, Peter Cooper, Thomm Jutz

This years' Riverland album by the trio of Eric Brace, Peter Cooper, and Thomm Jutz was a kind of concept record about Mississippi - the river and the state. Little Old Town - from their previous release Profiles in Courage, Frailty, and Discomfort is also about a river - in this case the Stones River and about a town that now lies beneath.  

"One I Love" by Kevin Gordon

Next up, we have a track from Kevin Gordon's modern classic album Gloryland. One of Nashville's best. 

"Diana" by Little Bandit

Next up, we have another track from Breakfast Alone from Little Bandit. I absolutely love this album, and I really hope we have new music from Little Bandit soon!  

"Crawling At Your Feet" by Aaron Lee Tasjan

Aaron Lee Tasjan has released some new songs recently from Karma for Cheap Reincarnated.  This is a track from Karma for Cheap.  Aaron Lee Tasjan is one of the best things happening these days both in terms of music and in terms of his humanity.

"Child of the Wind" by Michaela Anne

Next up, we have a single from the forthcoming Desert Dove album which will be released on September 27  on Yep Roc Records. Great to hear this new music from singer-songwriter Michaela Anne. 

"This Girl of Mine" by The White Animals

Next up, we have another track from 3000 Nights in Babylon by one The White Animals.  This band were on the front edge of the 80s Nashville scene that I mentioned earlier. 

"Damian" by Sad Baxter

Next up, we have another track from Weirdy.  I just found out Sad Baxter is playing with my cousin's band (Summer Cannibals from Portland, Oregon) next week at The Basement. 

"Heartbreak" by Rayvon Pettis; Megan Palmer

Next, we have our first listen to Nothing Is Sweeter - the new joint effort from Megan Palmer and Rayvon Pettis.  Pettis takes the lead on this track.  Two of my favorites together!

"Timelessly" by Jim Hoke

And, we close things out with a track from the latest album by the multi-talented Jim Hoke - The Floating Zone was released last year, and it is really a tour-de-force for this musician/arranger/songwriter.

As promised, I am going to kick into a higher gear in telling you about the Magnolia Roads American Roots Hoedown IV - coming at the end of this month.

The show runs two consecutive nights at The 5 Spot in East Nashville.  I am thrilled to be a part of this and to work with the awesome Magnolia Roads! 

Both nights are a benefit for the Ben Eyestone Fund at the Musician's Health Alliance. There are some incredible silent auction items.

Today, I wanted to focus in on Friday night April 26 (right after Tim Carroll Rock n Roll Happy Hour)

The lineup for the first night includes FunkyJenn and the Fringe Benefits, Don Gallardo and How Far West, Chris Wilson and The Heresy, and The Truehearts!

Tomorrow, we will focus on Saturday April 27 - which will begin at 6:00pm and go until late. The night two headliner is the one and only Lady Couch!

All of this happened a long time ago when the world was a very different place. Of course, none of us knew that at the time.

In Nashville (and I can only speak for Nashville), whether or not to go out to hear live music and if going out to hear live music, what to see if always a difficult choice. There are almost no nights that nothing is going on, and usually there are multiple things going on all at the same time.

Saturday, I made the choice to jump between venues, and I am really glad I did because even though I inevitably missed some things, what I did see was wonderful.

Starting with Mark Robinson celebrating his birthday with his band at The 5 Spot. I still hold to my previous statements that Mark Robinson puts on the best shows in Nashville. A great guitar player and bandleader, he is also a consummate entertainer and showman.

I left The 5 Spot a few minutes before the end of Mark Robinson's set and made my way to The Radio Cafe.  I caught the end of Megan Palmer's set with George Trouble (aka George Terry McDonald) sitting in, and then caught George Trouble's set with Palmer sitting in on a few songs. We are currently featuring two of George's recent albums. PLOW - released under George Trouble and Jawbone - released by his band The Zealots. It was great hearing some of these songs and some older ones (and some newer ones) live. It's always a pleasure to see Megan Palmer play.

From there, I headed to The Basement East. The event was a Drive By Truckers tribute which served as a benefit for Nuci's Space. I missed the first part of the show, but arrived in time to catch The Big Dumb playing some of the Truckers' greatest hits with some fabulous singers including Lilly Hiatt, Allen Thompson, DBT producer David Barbe, Chris Watts and more.  By now, you may realize that I am a huge fan of The Big Dumb, and they did not disappoint.  Javi Jones was solid on steel guitar and electric guitar.  The Singing Butcher, Tim George, was playing guitar and sang one song. Steven Nicholas Roberts, on bass, took things to the next level, and Paul Robert Sukowski killed it on drums and was obviously having the time of his life.  For me, the star of this part of the show was Griffin Winton.  His star has been on the rise with me since I heard his new album, but Saturday night - he just flat out became a rock star!

Sunday - after sleeping in AND taking a nap, I headed out to Dee's for a great night of music.

Connor Rand and Matthew Moon opened the show.  I had seen Connor before but I really dug what he was doing with Moon - with Rand on banjo and Moon on guitar and providing the percussion. Great songs and a great set.

Tom Schreck was next. It is always great to see Tom Schreck play.  He writes great songs and his knowledge of music is extensive. He did a couple of choice Bob Dylan covers including his last song which marked his public debut on the accordion.

Joe Nolan followed. It had been a little while since I saw Joe play live, so it was great to hear some of his new songs and some of his older songs, too.  I love his spoken word, "Serenade" that opened the set.

Last but least, Joe Goodkin - who we have featured on E2TG was in from Chicago. It was his visit that prompted the show.  It was great to meet him and his songs were powerful and moving.

All in all, a great weekend of music.

United States Constitution, 25th Amendment:

Section 4. Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.

Thereafter, when the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that no inability exists, he shall resume the powers and duties of his office unless the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive department or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit within four days to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office. Thereupon Congress shall decide the issue, assembling within forty-eight hours for that purpose if not in session. If the Congress, within twenty-one days after receipt of the latter written declaration, or, if Congress is not in session, within twenty-one days after Congress is required to assemble, determines by two-thirds vote of both Houses that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall continue to discharge the same as Acting President; otherwise, the President shall resume the powers and duties of his office.

Okay - so Wednesday... we shuffle up all the songs on my phone,  and things tend to get "Wild".  For some reason, I always look forward to Wednesdays.  I think it is the unpredictable nature of these shuffles:  new music alongside older songs, friends alongside long-time favorites, songs I didn't even know were on my phone, and revisiting albums that had been featured some time back.

I'm back - I was a bit under the weather yesterday... "under the weather" -what does that even mean? I was sick.

Today - I am overwhelmed by all of the hate and negativity in the world and in this country.  I am vowing not to read any more comment threads about anything remotely political for at least the rest of the day... why do I do this to myself?

My solution for today is to share music I love and to send out (to the best of my ability) love and light to all.

Yesterday was the one year anniversary of the Pulse nightclub shooting and this is Pride Month.  So I send out special love and light to everyone who needs it... in the words of Wild Ponies - "Love is not a sin."


A reminder:  Music City Roots tonight features not one but two veterans of E2TG Anniversary shows... look for Adrian + Meredith and The Mark Robinson Band joining a great lineup.  You can listen on-line if you can't make it to Franklin.

Topical Thursday Morning Shuffle - What about the Minutemen? Mix

Here we go... I'm gonna let my Topical Thursday Shuffle do the talking for me today.

Last night, I made it out to The Basement for an early show featuring three incredible songwriters.  Jeremy Ivey opened the night.  Although I had seen him before (at a couple of different shows at Dee's - I think.  On the prior occasions, I had not been able to really concentrate on his songs. Last night was more of a "listening room" environment, and I have to say, I was blown away. Really strong songs that were moving - at times gently humorous.  Count me as a new fan.

Up next was David Dondero. NPR called him one of our greatest living songwriters, and it was easy to see why.  I was introduced to his music a couple of years ago by Darrin Bradbury - who considers Dondero one of his biggest influences. It was clear that his songs were next level good. Again there was humor. To me it was like really good poetry accompanied by a guitar.

The aforementioned Darrin Bradbury closed this early show.  As long time readers may recall, there was a time a couple of years ago when I was seeing Darrin play at least two or three times every week.  Of late, Darrin has been killing it on road - with some high profile opening gigs for Ray Wylie Hubbard, Elizabeth Cook, Wanda Jackson, and Drivin' N' Cryin' to name a few. So, it had been a while since I have had the chance to see Darrin play.  He took advantage of this intimate setting to try out some new and newish songs - along with favorites like Elmwood Park and Myrtle Beach. The new songs sounded great, and I was reminded again why I consider Darrin Bradbury one of the best pure songwriters working today.

In other news, the details of the last two weeks of the E2TG Residency are coming together nicely, and I plan to finalize those announcements over the long holiday weekend (I am off work tomorrow).

Okay, as I mentioned, it is Topical Thursday.  As I say every week, the songs (more or less) fit my undisclosed "topic" but their connection to the topic is mainly all in my head.  Any viewpoint you may infer from this list is mine alone and may not reflect the viewpoint of the artists or their respective songs.

A really long song and a kind of long song mean we only have six songs in today's shuffle.

Man - some days, you just have to push forward purely on force of will... yesterday, after a full day of work, I recorded an upcoming Double Shot show, then I headed to The 5 Spot for another $2 Tuesday.  Elli Perry, Thor Platter, Los Colognes - including Derek Hoke joining for a new song of his, AJ Hobbs (who I have featured here on E2TG and who is in the New Music playlist - by the way AJ Hobbs backing band included all three members of Buck N' Stuff, and the late night set was Buck N' Stuff themselves  Not a bad night of music for $2.  Dragging a bit today - but...

Today's Wild Wednesday Shuffle comes from a random shuffle of all of the songs currently on my phone.

And we are back...  It is officially the longest day of the year, and the beginning of summer.  And unbelievably, the year is just about half way over.

Anyway, a fairly busy week ahead with some great shows, a pre-recording of Double Shot with Joe and Sue, and on Saturday, a live broadcast!

Today is Monday which is when we shuffle up songs from the Music City Monday playlist (songs by people who do or have lived in Nashville or who at least have some connection to the Music City.).

Welcome to the working week.  This weekend, Nashville celebrated the birth of a brand new community radio station as WXNA-LP went on the air at 101.5FM with a live stream going out via the web at WXNAfm.org and via the Tunein App.  All weekend long, the station previewed many of the great original programming, and as of this morning, the shows have begun to air.  If you haven't done so, check out the station.  It is awesome!  A huge shout out to the amazing folks who built the station from scratch. Salute!

The show I am co-hosting with Sue Havlish (Double Shot with Joe and Sue) had our preview yesterday, and it was a blast.  We take to the airwaves for our first regular show on Saturday June 11 at 11a,m. in the Central Time Zone. Our first theme will be A Tale of Two Nashvilles (Altman and ABC).

Last night, I took in the Guy Clark tribute at The Basement (original version), and it was a blast.  Reckless Johnny Wales, Carl Anderson, Darrin Bradbury plus hosts Todd Henkin and Charlie Treat and so many more did a great job.

It's Monday and that means we spin songs from the Music City Monday playlist... let's see what came up today.
