We pick up on our recap of this week's Featured Friday Playlist with songs number 8-11 (which somewhat falls outside of the normal scope of our Playlist- but that is the part of making the rules)...
8. "Letter to You" by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
We start this segment of music with a single from the forthcoming twentieth studio album by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. The album was recorded live in the studio with no overdubs and features three tracks which were written prior to Springsteen's debut album Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.
9. "Personality Crisis - Live Geneva" by Johnny Thunders
In conjunction with a newly released "Resurrected" version of Thunders third and final solo album comes this live version of the album culled from three different live recordings. Nashville fun fact: "Personality Crisis" is one of the very few cover songs I have ever heard Tim Carroll perform.
10. "Then Again" by Psychic Temple; The Dream Syndicate
Psychic Temple mastermind, Chris Schlarb teamed up with the recently resurrected Los Angeles band led by Steve Wynn to record the album Houses of the Holy. For reference - the previous four Psychic Temple albums were named I-IV. Those who know will understand.
11. "Bang Bang Boogie" by Bobby Royale
Based in Stockholm, Sweden - Bobby Royale - return with a single that is dripping with New Orleans with some modern flow on top. A great way to close out this segment of music.
And, I am back. I am fortunate to still be working my day job, so my typical weekday daytime is pretty much the same as before - except for the fact that I am working from home now - which come to think of it is quite different than before...
My weekends are much different and to be honest, I haven't not been one of those hyper-productive people during this time. For me, often just getting through and getting by is all I can achieve. I have been cooking more than before.
Anyway, it is Monday which is the day we dig into my massive Music City Monday playlist and see what comes up. It is always interesting how the random shuffles I do turn out. I am not an expert on randomness or on the particular methods used by programs to simulate randomness. I do know that patterns sometimes seem to emerge from random occurrences. Random shuffle have been a big part of E2TG since before the beginning actually. Sometimes, I wish some newer song would come up or feel that a particular album or artists comes up too much or not enough, but overall, I believe in the concept of letting the random shuffle determine the playlist for the day....
Well, my first show of Greetings from Nashville was this morning, and all went reasonably well. I few minor hiccups - but that is just the nature of live, community radio. If you missed it, it is now archived and you can see the playlist Here.
The second installment of Decline of Southern Civilization was last night at The 5 Spot. Due to having to get up very early this morning, I was only able to fully catch Slump Test (and Shakes vagina monologue - don't ask). Slump Test this week included our old friend Drew Kohl (who is also in Chris Watts' new band Dirt Reynolds). Plus, they brought in the Nashville Horns and another old friend Tom Schrek (playing keyboards) on a couple of songs. I am really digging this band.

Thursday Shuffle:

"She's So Bad for You" by Flatmates (from Flatmates)
Our first listen to the forthcoming self-titled debut album by the UK indiepop pioneers. The band has released music in each decade since the 1980s, but until now (March 13th release date), they haven't made a full-length album. The video playlist features their first single which has been released. Great stuff!
"Good Friday" by Cowboy Junkies (from Live at Belly Up)
"Saphirr Bombs" by Inkraktare (from We Are Not Really Here)

Wow! It's December..... It's about time to dive into the 2018 Earie Awards! Is this the third annual Earier Awards? I think that's right - maybe fourth annual - who knows... As always, it will different than prior years and I'll be making it all up as I go along...
But first, we missed last Music City Monday - so let's do this. As always, this shuffle comes from my epic (and ever growing) Music City Monday Spotify Playlist - The playlist is new and classic albums and songs from artist and bands who have or have had some connection to Nashville. As you might imagine, it is a diverse combination of all kinds of music from musical friends, musical heroes, and the like.
The early evening is almost as perfect as the day was. It’s a good walk to Antonio’s. We’re walking in a loose pack. Zü is not with any one of us, but she is not exactly avoiding us either. It’s hard to explain, but it is impossible to misinterpret. Richard is telling me about a football game, and as usual, I’m struggling to connect myself to the conversation. Apparently, he got into a game on the main quad. Richard is saying something about catching a pass or something, and I try to react with the proper amount of enthusiasm. A car is driving slowly down the road and weaving slightly. A dog is howling on an adjacent street, and someone somewhere is blowing their car horn. All of a sudden, somebody grabs my arm.
I'm glad that I decided to make Monday's at E2TG Music City Monday. It, at least, gives me one thing to look forward to about the start of another week. Our Music City Monday Playlist on Spotify contains over 1,000 songs from Nashville and former Nashville based artists from the past and the present. It is an eclectic mix that I think provides a good cross-section of some of the awesome music that was and is being made in Nashville - Music City USA.
JOIN US! Thursday will be the GRAND FINALE of the E2TG Residency! Let's make it a party! We have wall-to-wall great music. JUST ADDED!: Shane Tutmarc is going to play a short set starting promptly at six p.m. (So make your plans to arrive early!). Joanna Barbera will be up next, followed by the incredible Eli Cook - coming in from Charlottesville, VA with his unique blend of blues and alternative rock. Finally, Bee Taylor will be closing things down with a rocking set with her incredible band.

While I am still smiling, thinking out last week's kick off to the E2TG 7 Year Anniversary Residency, it is time to shift our attention to this week's show. And what a show!
Once again, I going to recommend you get there early - things will kick off around 6:15-6:20 or so with a solo set from an absolute favorite songwriter of mine - Ben de la Cour. His latest album is The High Cost of Living Strange, and if don't have it - well, you need to fix that situation right away. Ben is about to start a big tour of Canada, but he agreed to do Thursday show before leaving.
Whenever people ask me why I keep doing E2TG after seven years, my answer inevitably is about the incredible music I've heard that I might have missed if I didn't do this blog and the amazing people I have met and gotten to know. The End Men are the prototypical example of both of those things. When I first heard their music toward the end of 2011 (the year E2TG started), I was completely blown away. That their is music out there as good as what they were doing that I had not heard, is my motivation to keep my ears to the ground. Over the years, as I have gotten to know Matthew Hendershot and Livia Ranalli, they have become two of my favorite people. Badass musicians and all-around great people. The End Men are based in Brooklyn. I've seen them twice here in Nashville, but it has been a few years, and I am so excited to show them off to some of my favorite Nashville friends.
Rounding out the music will be Ted Drozdowski's Psychedelic Circus. If you have never heard psychedelic blues music, you need to witness their set. If you have seen psychedelic blues but have never seen Ted and his amazing band, you are only partially prepared for what you are going to see and hear. If you have seen Ted perform, but not seen his latest incarnation of his band, you are still in for surprises and delights. I have grateful to be able to help Ted celebrate a milestone birthday yesterday, and the celebration will continue Thursday!
All this, and I will reading a short passage from my novel, The Drift. I will have copies for sale, and I will try to do a better job of being near the merch table (this is new to me).
