E2TG 12/9/2020 - The Best I Can - No Good Fool Mix (Minor Key Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

We have reached the penultimate Featured Friday Recap Post - Songs 36-45:

36. "Oh Oh Oh" by Eckhardt And the House
Up first today, a great new single from The Netherlands. The music is meant to have a late 70s - early 80s vibe and was inspired by a documentary about Edward Snowden and a German film set in 1984 East Germany.
37. "harlem" by small dogs
Up next, we have the latest single from New York based and recent transplant from London - George Barnett who records as small dogs. Digging this.
38. "Dance in the Rain" by James Burt
Next up - the first of two songs about rain. First up, we have the debut single from a UK based pop artist. Pop music has and still does mean different things. I like this song quite a bit. An impressive debut.
39. "Rainy Day" by Murdocco
More rain... this track comes from Mariana Murdocco who was born in Uruguay, got her musical start in Barcelona, and is now based in London. The inspirational track features piano and a heavy bass line.
40. "Stay in Bed" by Julia Van Daam
Stay in Bed is the latest single from Providence, RI native and Boston based singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Julia Van Daam. The song delivers a powerful message and asks hard questions about the state of our nation.
41. "Going Down - Ferry Corsten Remix Edit" by Kosmonova
Shifting gears dramatically, we have a pounding, electronic dance number from German DJ Kosmonova - who had some chart hits in the 2000s.
42. "Criminals, Cannibals, and Animals" by Sam Seibert
Up next, some hard rock via Delaware based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sam Seibert.
43. "County Lines" by Ventrelles
Up next, we have a new single by the Manchester band Ventrelles - led by Phil Knox who formed the band after returning to Manchester after living in Chicago for a time.
44. "End is Near" by Ferko, Rostany, Vic Villian
Next - we have our second track in this week's playlist which came to us via The Eastern European Music Academy. Ferko is based in Glasgow but originally from Budapest, Rostany is a three-piece EDM band from Belarus - their band member Vic Villian contributes to this track which like the track we featured yesterday from Karo Glazer and Zsud - is featured on  2020 Compilation put out by the Eastern European Music Academy.
45. "Season's End" by Facing Mountains
And finally, we have a track from the debut EP by Dutch composer Xander Slikker who is performing as Facing Mountains.  Currently based in North Macedonia, the music here is a lovely mix of chamber-pop/folk and indietronica/folktronica. This was a direct artist submission, and I was pleased that Xander actually listened to an earlier playlist and dug the music of my friends The Smoking Flowers. Great stuff.
Tomorrow - we wrap up this very long and very diverse Playlist with songs 46-55

E2TG 4/09/2020 - Still Here - Hope You Are Too - Ready for Good Times Mix (Not Alone Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Heading into a three day stay-at-home weekend.  I will be back tomorrow with a brand new Featured Friday playlist.  If you follow the playlist on Spotify, I usually update just after midnight or early in the morning if I fall asleep before midnight.  (Midnight is when most new releases go live) - so you can check it before post it on the blog.  I have a good "on-deck" list with several new releases set to hit.

Not much else to say today, So, let's get right to the shuffle - a longer (almost a pre-newnormal normal shuffle)

(Last day to check out this week's playlist.  The list will refresh tomorrow)

Thursday Shuffle:

A mixed bag today - with some local favorites - some E2TG faves from years past - and a classic tune from my youth.

"Morse Code" by Tape Deck Mountain (from 21st Century Loosers: The Best of 2009-2019)

"Prove My Love" by Violent Femmes (from Violent Femmes)

Thanks to Blister in the Sun this debut album the album went platinum and finally hit the Billboard charts in 1991 - 9 years after its release. But, in my hometown and the time, only a few of us knew about it and it hit me hard - putting words and music to the raging storm of emotions and chemicals going on in my adolescent brain and body.

"Something Else" by Candy Apple and The Buddies (from Leprechaun to the Right)

Candy Apple and The Buddies (aka The Buddies) were/are a group featuring members of Smoking Flowers, Justin and the Cosmics, Pale Blue Dot, Welcome to Ashley, and Black Vincent. Here they are doing the Eddie Cochran song.

"Almost Gone" by Joe Goodkin (from Paper Arrows)
"Pretty Awful" by Magnapop (from The Circle is Round)
"It's a Shame" by Bonsai Universe (from Too Many Ghosts)

Three songs from 2019 releases - all very different.

"Whiskey Lie" by Andrea Stray (from Vacancy)

A 2010 release from Nashville/Los Angeles singer-songwriter Andrea Stray.

"You Bring The Class" by The Deadline Shakes (from Zealots)

"It's So Funny" by Dylan Rodrique (from Cat's Game)

"World's Smallest Confederate Veteran" by Luke Powers (from Hwy 100)

A wonderful song from songwriter and poet Luke Powers. I had the pleasure of performing on a spoken word night with him, the late David Olney, Rod Picott, and Rebecca Weiner Tompkins.

"Honey and Sugar" by Lori Kelley (from Under Stars and Storms)

Lori Kelley is a D.C. area transplant, but she has been here several years now. We was among the first group of people I met when I kind of emerged from the shadows into the Nashville music scene. She was a big part of the wonderful Sunday night shows at Bobby's Idle Hour (Eastside Invasion). She is a wonderful songwriter, and this is her most recent release.

E2TG 2019 Recap - Part 3 - Daylight Mix (Island Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Beach Notes (explained - sort of)

One thing I want to do with the revamp of E2TG is to write about my experiences in the (East) Nashville music community, and I want to do so while finding a specific "voice" in telling these stories.   Over the last couple of months, I have been teasing the concept of "Beach Notes" on my Facebook page. Basically short - stream of consciousness, observations. Why "Beach Notes"?  Well, I have my reasons.  Basically, it goes back to Darrin Bradbury's song "Exile on Myrtle Beach" which may not entirely be about the South Carolina community.  That's all I will say for now.

Beach Notes 12-3-2019 $2 Tuesday
It promised to be a good one. I mean $2 Tuesday's are all good (or at least I can't remember one that wasn't), but this one - well, I knew (or at least knew of) everyone playing, and I would get to meet Mark Cline Bates whose album King of the Crows was among my favorites of 2019 and hear him perform.
The night got off to an auspicious start - Jon and Adrienne were already there when I got there. I caught up with Jon and our talk turned to the intersection of punk rock and Americana music. As it does.  It was good to catch up.
Serious conversations about the challenges of life and aging and ailing parents. A math professor originally from Holland told a joke in Saxon. (Yeah, it was that kind of night).  The 5 Spot is always a good place for people watching.  You see all kinds of people there. As an observer of human behavior, I like to see how people behave. Go figure.
The music was top-notch - which almost goes without saying.  Mark Cline Bates, Stephie James, Clark Paterson, host Derek Hoke, and Jon Byrd and a particularly potent version of Byrd's Auto Parts (David Conrad, Justin Amaral, Leo Grassl, Diego on Trombone, and Nick Beaudoing (of Runner of the Woods) on accordion.)  With Tim Hibbs holding down the 1s and the 2s spinning $1 finds from a New York trip. We were all singing along at some points, and I had to tell a younger person what "Back on the Chain Gang" by The Pretenders was.
$2 Tuesday is about the music and the community and the $2 Yazoos, and it is about expecting the unexpected.   Once again, I think how cool it is to live where I do and how cool it is that Derek Hoke started and has continued this weekly tradition for so long.

Now - let's jump back into our recap of 2019!

When a video for a song was not available, I substituted another song by the same artist. When I could not find any videos by an artist, I included a related video or did not include a video for that track. This blog may reference unreleased tracks, however, no unreleased music is ever included

Good morning.  It is Tuesday.  I had an enjoyable evening at Dee's in Madison.  Checking out Madison Guild Monday with Luisa Lopez, Tom Mason, Meghan Hayes, Mando Saenz, and Bob Lewis - with Megan Palmer making several guest appearances.

After that, I stayed for Cordovas who were remarkable as always.

A relatively short shuffle this morning due to some technical issues (i.e. apps not behaving like I want them to) but what are you going to do? Let's go!

My heart is completely full after last night's show.  Thanks so much to everyone who came out, and to Jason Erie, The Truehearts, and their incredible bands.  We have two more Residency shows. Next up is a show featuring the artists behind two of my favorite albums of 2019.  Josh Gray and Meghan Hayes.  It will be Josh Gray's The 5 Spot debut (long overdue in my opinion).

By the way, I completely sold out on the physical copies of The Drift! Thank you to everyone who bought one.  It's not looking like I will get new ones in time for the show on the 16th, however, I hope to have more for the finale on October 23. In the meantime, you can get order the book via Amazon, and they also have a Kindle version available if that is your preference.
