E2TG 9/15/2020 - In Other News - Desperate Mix (Downpour Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Fun Fact: I write the Featured Friday recaps the night before and at that time, I usually add the post subtitle (i.e. "In Other News"). Sometimes I know what it means - sometimes it just pops into my head and I either write about it, ignore it, or change it in the morning.

I guess I was thinking about the big things dominating the news cycles - elections, pandemic, wildfires... and I was thinking about on the news when the anchor says in other news... I don't watch television news so I don't know if they still say that or if they do - what other news they are covering. Besides pop culture and celebrity gossip... local stories... is there anything going on that isn't partially connected to the election or the pandemic or the wildfires - and even those have overlap.

Question: Is good news an oxymoron?  I remember the feel good stories at the end of news broadcasts... in the midst of tragedy and violence and suffering, those stories made you feel good, but where they "news" in the strictest sense of the word.  I mean, I guess a war ending or a pandemic being stopped would be good news- but those are really just conclusions to bad news. I'm not being negative or pessimistic, but I legitimately wonder if there is anything such thing as "good news".  Probably so, and I probably am being negative and pessimistic.

Today, we featured the next four songs from this week's Playlist.  Songs 12-15:

12. "Feel That I'm Falling" by Tom Galloway
We start off today's recap with the latest single by Nashville-based songwriter Tom Galloway.  I really dig this song. Check it out.
13. "Apple Tree" by Conrad Deadly
We cross the pond for the single from UK based singer-songwriter (and model) Conrad Deadly. He brings an interesting musical background with diverse influences to create something unique.
14. "Before the World Broke" by Andrew Weiss and Friends
NYC based singer-songwriter Andrew Weiss and his friends have two new standalone singles out with an EP called Lookout Mountain due in October. A timely and really wonderful song.
15. "Never Die!!!" by Salem Wolves
Massachusetts based psychotronic rock band Salem Wolves pull out three exclamation marks!!! on the title track from their new EP.  A great sound - I just "discovering" this band, but they have apparently been tearing up around New England for some time. A great way to close out this segment of music.
Tomorrow - we pick up with our recap with songs 16-19...

E2TG 6/11/2020 - The Outcry, the Action, and the Reaction - Slow Hell Mix (The Gift Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

So, we have seen the widespread protests across the country and around the world in response to the tragic and senseless death of George Floyd. We have also seen specific actions - such as the call to reinvent or "defund' the police. We have seen confederate statues being removed from public places, NASCAR banning the confederate flag, laws being proposed, people speaking out for the first time.

We have also seen the reaction - policy doubling down on brutality. Right wing politicians using racist and fascist language. Police targeting peaceful protesters and reporters. Trump is planning a hate rally in Tulsa on June 19th - the symbolism of the date and place are not lost on most of us.

Let's not forget voter suppression efforts by the GOP on State, Local, and National levels.

So, my question for today is now what? More protests? Major voter recruitment efforts - backed by legal challenges to voter suppression? Making sure voices are heard no matter what and no matter how...

All of the above maybe?  I am truly frightened by what is happening in this country and what so many are allowing to happen.

And, in the midst of all that COVID-19 cases are on the rise again.  Nashville is stuck in Phase II of our reopening because it seems like most people are acting like the whole thing is over.

I am just going to admit right now that I don't have a lot of answers, but I vow to keep asking questions and to keep shining a light into the darkness of the fascist regime holding our nation hostage.

Whew!  Okay - next week, I promise to say what I really feel...

Now, it is time to conclude our recap of this week's Featured Friday Playlist with the final five songs in the shuffle. Tomorrow, it will be time for a brand new Featured Friday Playlist!

22. "Promise of Tomorrow" by Turkeyfoot
The title track to the new album from Colorado based bluegrass band Turkeyfoot. The album have some purer bluegrass moments, but you can hear the bluegrass influences on this country song.
23. "Low Way" by Robert Kuhn
Next up, we have a track released ahead of a new album called Persevere. Robert Kuhn is a singer-songwriter and surfer from Galveston, Texas. The album was made while recovering from a near fatal car accident. Then the pandemic hit and added a new level of perseverance.  I dig this song.
24. "That's How I Roll" by Debra Power
Next up, we have a blues singer-songwriter and pianist from Calgary, Alberta, Canada with the title track of her new album. Nice to have some rollicking blues in the playlist.
25. "Condolences" by Skanger
Next up, we have the debut single from this duo based in Dublin, Ireland. Colin Morris (Sunbear) and Mark Healy (The Josephs). The duo's influences mix shoegaze influences with the ambient/drone music of Brian Eno and others.  A nice change of pace for this playlist.
26. "Dust" by Good Foxy
Last but not least, we have the new single from UK band Good Foxy. This a track from their new album Planets Over There.  A nice alternative rock song to round out the playlist.

E2TG 6/3/2020 - Now What? - Beloved Mix (Elephant Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

I said quite a bit in yesterday's post (posted today), so I will just get on to the music... (More will be said, you can be sure)

And now, let's review songs 19-22 from this week's Featured Friday Playlist:

19.  "It Was Always  Too Late" by Secret Bad Boy
Next up, we have Secret Bad Boy - a Chicago band conceived and led by Ben Joseph of Ezra Furman's band. The song is a synth driven ode to nihilism and the vastness of space.
20.  "Ghosts" by Idle Noise
The latest single from this indie rock band from Coventry.
21. "Not My Problem" by Scarlet Drive
New single from this indie rock band from Perth, Australia. The song was recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic between the state boundaries between Perth and Sydney. I really dig this song.  By the way, in searching through my e-mail, I discovered that this band had contacted me a few times going back to 2018, so I am really glad I gave this a listen.
22. "Background Worry" by Jack Stafford
We close today's review with the new single from British singer-songwriter Jack Stafford. The song captures the negative mental processes that many of go through daily.  A wonderful chamber pop sound, and a great addition to the playlist.
Tomorrow, we finish up our recap of the Playlist with songs 23-26

E2TG 4/01/2020 - Happy Birthday D. Boon - In for the Long Haul - L'Ascenseur Mix (I Choose Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Dennes Dale "D." Boon, who died at age 27 in 1985 would have been 62 years old today. The guitarist, singer, and songwriter with the legendary Minutemen was outspoken, innovative, and is greatly missed.

Double Nickels on the Dime remains a desert island disc for me and one I return to over and over.

The Long Haul
The COVID-19 news yesterday was sobering if not unexpected. The projected death tolls - some of which rely on drastic actions being taken - which in many places are not being taken a- are staggering.
Like many of you, I suspect, I feel myself growing restless even while knowing this period is just beginning. The great need, I feel, is compassion and care for our fellow man.
I will not put others at risk to relieve my boredom, restlessness, or to fulfill a want.  When I go out, I will follow the guidelines not only for my own safety but mostly for the safety of others - including loved ones with whom I may come in contact.
Reach out by phone or electronically if you need help. The next two weeks, at least, are going to be bad and frightening. Hang in there. Talk about your fear and any other feelings with someone safe.

E2TG 3/25/2020 - Still Trying - Armageddon Mix (Fanatics Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Moving tentatively forward... trying to find a path. I believe we will come through this, but I am certain we will be changed. I think about events in my lifetime. I think about 9-11 and that did permanently change us. But, for those of us not directly impacted by the attacks themselves, for many of us, our daily lives didn't change that much, and in that respect it is different.

I think about Nashville still reeling from the March 3 tornado and then to have this on top of it. What will East Nashville look like when this is over. I think about my many friends directly and profoundly affected by this - what will their lives look like on the other side. When the venues reopen - and it is declared all safe (not my Trump but by doctors and scientists) - will we still be cautious in our interactions. I keep saying that I can't wait to be able to hug all my friends but that first time -what will it be like.

There are great sites for getting up-to-date and accurate information. Don't rely on social media posts or even mainstream news - which at best may be dated and incomplete. Check with the health department in your area.

E2TG is a music blog, and although, I like to use this space to share my thoughts and feelings, they are just that, thoughts and feelings.

Anything that seems like advice, take with a grain of salt. But, do find people you can talk to and share your fears and frustrations.  We may be physically separated but you are not alone.

We have a song premiere tomorrow morning that I am very excited about. And, we have some cool new music on the way for Friday. I have updated the Recent and Upcoming Release listing, and I added a bunch of new music to my phone. None of the stuff came up in today's shuffle, but they will come up.

    Featured Friday Playlist
(Last day to check out this week's playlist.  The list will refresh tomorrow)

Thursday Shuffle:

A mixed bag today - with some local favorites - some E2TG faves from years past - and a classic tune from my youth.

"Morse Code" by Tape Deck Mountain (from 21st Century Loosers: The Best of 2009-2019)

"Prove My Love" by Violent Femmes (from Violent Femmes)

Thanks to Blister in the Sun this debut album the album went platinum and finally hit the Billboard charts in 1991 - 9 years after its release. But, in my hometown and the time, only a few of us knew about it and it hit me hard - putting words and music to the raging storm of emotions and chemicals going on in my adolescent brain and body.

"Something Else" by Candy Apple and The Buddies (from Leprechaun to the Right)

Candy Apple and The Buddies (aka The Buddies) were/are a group featuring members of Smoking Flowers, Justin and the Cosmics, Pale Blue Dot, Welcome to Ashley, and Black Vincent. Here they are doing the Eddie Cochran song.

"Almost Gone" by Joe Goodkin (from Paper Arrows)
"Pretty Awful" by Magnapop (from The Circle is Round)
"It's a Shame" by Bonsai Universe (from Too Many Ghosts)

Three songs from 2019 releases - all very different.

"Whiskey Lie" by Andrea Stray (from Vacancy)

A 2010 release from Nashville/Los Angeles singer-songwriter Andrea Stray.

"You Bring The Class" by The Deadline Shakes (from Zealots)

"It's So Funny" by Dylan Rodrique (from Cat's Game)

"World's Smallest Confederate Veteran" by Luke Powers (from Hwy 100)

A wonderful song from songwriter and poet Luke Powers. I had the pleasure of performing on a spoken word night with him, the late David Olney, Rod Picott, and Rebecca Weiner Tompkins.

"Honey and Sugar" by Lori Kelley (from Under Stars and Storms)

Lori Kelley is a D.C. area transplant, but she has been here several years now. We was among the first group of people I met when I kind of emerged from the shadows into the Nashville music scene. She was a big part of the wonderful Sunday night shows at Bobby's Idle Hour (Eastside Invasion). She is a wonderful songwriter, and this is her most recent release.
