E2TG 8/26/2020 - Powerless - Cocoon Mix (Thanks Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

My power was off for about seven hours yesterday evening - so I didn't get to do my usual prep work for today's post (which you don't really know about but anyway), so time is tight today... bear with me.

Reminder: All Featured Friday Playlist songs can be heard on our Spotify Playlist (up until the new list goes live - the following Friday).  Most shuffle songs can be heard on the video playlist (substitute songs used if the actual song is not available on that platform - if possible)

Today, we recap the nexr segment of the Featured Friday Playlist (songs 23-29)

23. "Enter the Animal" by Biomechanimal
First up in this segment, we have the latest single from UK based electro-industrial band Biomechanimal. This hard driving song has been a staple of the band's live shows for some tome.
24. "Start over Again" by Paul Gillings
Former World Harmonica champion and singer-songwriter Paul Gillings with a track from his new electric blues album Invisible Prison.
25. "Melting" by A Shoreline Dream
Colorado-based shoegaze/post punk band A Shoreline Dream - return to E2TG with the 2nd single and title track from their new album.
26. "Locked in the Panopticon" by Reardon Love
Next up, we have a UK artist with an 80s new wave feel.  Cool stuff.
27. "We Share the Same Stars" by The Sea at Midnight
Next up, we have the recent single from L.A. based The Sea at Midnight - led by Vince Grant.  The band's eponymous album is due later this fall.
28. "Wake Me Up When This Year's Over" by KC Beck
Austin based singer-songwriter and army veteran KC Beck echoes what many of us are feeling about 2020 - on his new single.
29. "Prelude To a Dream" by Eito
We close this segment of music with a track from the recent single by Pittsburgh based battle MC Eito - whose music mixes grime, boom bap, and house. A great way addition to the playlist and great wrap up for this segment of music.

Tomorrow - we wrap up our recap of this week's Playlist with songs 30-37.

E2TG 4/16/2020 - Are We There Yet? - Yip Mix ( No Tomorrow Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Are we there yet?  I find myself asking the question - not necessarily of anyone in particular, but more and more I find the answer contains another question. Where is there?

Words like "phased reboot" are being used and while no one can seem to agree on the right timeline, it seems as if in the future - near or far - we will begin to ease into a different phase of life. I avoided saying "back" because more and more it seems as if whatever comes next will be different than what we have known.

I do not have answers to any of the questions. I read enough to feel somewhat informed but not enough to go stark raving mad.  It does seem if we restart things too soon that we will very likely have a second wave of the virus.

But as for how soon is too soon or any of that, I do not feel qualified to answer.

Personally, I am doing well, but I know some people are suffering both from the ravages of the disease and the impacts of the shut downs/quarantines.

Final thought, we are all going through something traumatic. While it may be true that our particular situation is comparatively better than someone else's, the fact remains that trauma is trauma, and it is okay to react to that trauma. No one needs to apologize for their reaction. I go back again to the circles of grief. When deciding who to talk to about our struggles (and we should talk to someone), consider the other person's situation. For example, someone who has lost a loved one is probably not the right person to unload to about economic insecurities or struggles.  But, do unburden yourself with someone.

We have a nifty little shuffle today, and don't forget - a new Featured Friday Playlist debuts sometime after midnight (or in the morning if I fall asleep).

Wild Wednesday Morning Shuffle - Nocturnal Emissions from the 29th Century Mix (Velvet Fog Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

*Note: The video playlist at the bottom of the post attempts to closely approximate the shuffle I listened to on my way to work this morning. When a video for a song was not available, I substituted another song by the same artist. When I could not find any videos by an artist, I included a related video or did not include a video for that track. This blog may reference unreleased tracks, however, no unreleased music is ever included.

Got those rainy day, mid-week, stayed out too late blues...   But, not really blues, but it is mid-week and rainy, and I did stay out too late...   Another fine edition of $2 Tuesday - great hangs, cool music, and $2 Yazoos for $2 admission.  Jack Silverman was dazzling with his jazzy, improvisational guitar sounds as he opened the night of music, Kristen Englenz made her $2 Tuesday debut to close out the night - with a killer band. In between was host Derek Hoke and Cara Louise from St. Louis. Plus DJ Tim Hibbs spinning Halloween themed songs.

Onward, it is Wednesday and that is day, we get wild and just throw open the shuffle to whatever songs are on my phone. Let's go!

Featured Friday Morning Shuffle - Wildman Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Another great night at The 5 Spot - with Jason Ringenberg on the second week of his month-long residency.  I got to thinking about why I enjoyed it so much (because the obvious answer that it was great music).  I think I have a sentimental/nostalgic streak in me, however when it comes to live music, I am generally more interested in seeing a new artist.  To me the worst thing would be to see a band or artist that I have loved for years - powering through a set of songs I know well that are uninspired and when it is clear the artist or band is miserable.  That is the feeling I got when I saw Dylan in 1988.  He did all the classic songs, the band was good, and it was (in my opinion) a horrible show. Contrast to when I saw Dylan a few years back. He played almost exclusively songs from more recent albums that I didn't know very well, he again had a great band, but this time Dylan seemed to be having a blast. And I consider that a great show.

Jason Ringenberg seems to genuinely be having a great time at this residency shows (he said he was multiple times so I tend to believe him). His set was a good mix of songs from his new album, songs from his solo careers, and some classic Scorchers numbers.  He was engaged with the audience, and as a result it was a great evening of music.

Anyway, I have jump into the shuffle now.  It's Featured Friday at E2TG.  I am not going to try to explain my Feature Friday playlist.  All our brand new music is here, plus some previously brand new music from the last year or so, plus some extras.  Well, I guess I did try to explain it.  Anyway, MUSIC!

Now that 2018 has been wrapped up tight, let's move back into our Trending music for 2019.  Today's shuffle comes from the new "Trending" playlist - which is new music we added in November 2018 or later.  Not sure how often I will refresh this playlist, but I want to limit the size of it.

We have a bunch of first listens today, so let's jump right into the shuffle!

Wild Wednesday Morning Shuffle - Bad Hombre Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Time to reveal our guests for Week 2 of the E2TG 7th Anniversary Residency at The 5 Spot. This one will be held Thursday June 14, 2018. That's Flag Day, so if you bring a gently used flag, you can get in for just $5.00.  Otherwise, the admission is $5.00.

Ted Drozdowski has been a favorite of mine, since the first time I saw him leave the stage, use a wine glass as a slide, and generally take Hill Country blues into the stratosphere.  I once saw him walk off the stage at the old Family Wash, do the aforementioned wine glass trick, walk out the front door, come back in the side door and get back on stage will playing the whole time. He has a new configuration called Ted Drozdowski's Psychedelic Circus, and I am thrilled to have them for my show!

The End Men. If you have been following E2TG for awhile, you will recognize the name The End Men. Led by Matthew Hendershot and Livia Ranalli, Brooklyn, New York band The End Men have their own unique and rocking take on blues music. In late 2011, early 2012 - when Ear to the Ground was just an infant music blog, I was introduced to their music. Getting to know them and their music was a key factor in my continuing to press on through those early days. They were the E2TG Band of the Year in 2013 (the first Band of the Year that I selected myself). The End Men last played Nashville (I believe) was in September 2014 (at The Basement for the all-day post-Americana show that The Basement put on.  It is high time they came back! You do not want to miss this!

Opening the show is TBA! I've seen TBA several times, and every time it is a completely different experience. Kind of like Sour Du Jour.  Seriously, I can't tell you yet who the opener is going to be, but I guarantee it will be good!  Plan to get there early!

On to the Wild Wednesday Shuffle!  Remember, on Wednesday, our shuffle comes from all the songs I have stored on my phone. So, it can be new music, classics, from the E2TG archives etc.

Wild Wednesday Morning Shuffle - Get Off the Pot Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Last night was one of those nights that reminds me why I love Nashville so much.  Bill Lloyd did an early show at The 5 Spot with a great band doing classic and new songs - both those he wrote and choice covers.  He will be back next week and then again for the final Tuesday in November.

Then, I hung around for Derek Hoke's $2 Tuesday. One of the absolute best things this town has to offer. $2 cover, $2 Yazoo beer, consistently great music, and an awesome hang with the coolest of people.

Seeing Rayvon Pettis and Megan Palmer together was a highlight.  And Derek Hoke and his band were as always fantastic.

The audience was filled with a who's who of great artists.  If I believed in namedropping, I would tell you that Aaron Lee Tasjan, Bobby Bare Jr., Zach Schmidt, Jon Byrd, Jon Latham, Joe Fletcher and more were there.  But, like Wynonna told me when I met her a couple of years ago, namedropping is unseemly.

Seriously, I had some inspiring and motivating conversations, and so what if I am really tired today....

Add on the encouraging election results from different places, and I am actually feeling pretty good today.

It is Wednesday and we get "Wild" on Wednesday.  Let's shuffle:

Twas the Night Thursday Morning Shuffle - Later Like Dig Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Here we go.... Only 5 more shuffles (including this one) in 2016.

First up:  A pair of well-deserved "Earies" (there will be one more embedded in the shuffle)

1.  The "Outcast" Award goes to Leland Sundries and comes as we received word that they recently signed a publishing deal with Mother West Records.  This New York band released their latest album Music For Outcasts this year, and I got to attend their Nashville release show at the Family Wash -where they tore it up.

2.  The "Key Chain" award goes to Amelia White.  Not only was the "motel key chain" among the best merch of the year, her latest album Home Sweet Hotel was one of the best albums released in 2016. This is one that seems like it has been out for some long that it almost slipped by me, but I do remember attending the CD release show (also at the Family Wash) earlier this year.  Amelia White is one of those performers that I never get tired of seeing live. Her fluid backing band, The Blue Souvenirs, are always on point and always feature some of this town's best musicians.

Well, this is our penultimate shuffle before we break for Christmas, so here is a holiday mix - chex cereal optional.

Tinsel Thursday Morning Shuffle - Christmas, Daddy-O Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Okay - I am running short on time - so I will defer the Earies until tomorrow.

I decided for the last part of the year to add a bunch of holiday-themed music to my phone, and since I have not created a Throwback Thursday playlist - I created a Christmas/Holiday playlist which I am shuffling from today...

Wild Wednesday Morning Shuffle - Be Easy and Free Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

I need to be a little brief... my "new" phone came in, so the transition process has begun. The good news is that it will solve some of the issues I have been having.  It may just take a bit to get the music all squared away... deciding if I do a straight dump of everything or do some culling of older "remainders" from albums I featured a long time ago... Either way, the time consuming part will be rebuilding the playlists. Wish those were my biggest problems...

Tonight, the finale of the Crackerboots residency.  If you haven't made it out to this point, you would make an effort. You will not be disappointed. If you have made it out, I don't need to tell you...   Peter Cooper opens.  The late show features several bands including the always amazing Don Gallardo!

Wednesday, we get wild and free with some music from covering all sorts of genres, eras, geographic locations, and more...

We have arrived at mid-week which means it is time for the next incarnation of the Crackerboots Residency at The 5 Spot. Last week was awesome - so come on out. This week's guests are Ben De La Cour and William Lee.

On Wednesday, all bets are off... Music City? Yes! Trending? Yes Throwback? Yes Featured? Yes None of the Above? Yes.  Wild Shuffle - now!

Wild Wednesday Morning Shuffle - Buy Her Coffee Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Wow, we've reached the last day of August.  We are approaching Labor Day weekend in the USA. Here in Nashville, the live music possibilities for the coming days is mind-blowing and overwhelming. Bottom line, get out and see some live music.  For tonight, my eye is on The 5 Spot for the Grand Finale of David Olney's 4 out of 5 Wednesday Residency.  Recommended if you want to hear one of the best songwriters this town (known for songwriters) has ever seen. A man praised by his peers who have included Townes Van Zandt, Rodney Crowell, and more.  Also, recommended if you want to hear top rated musicians and the occasional burst of dramatic poetry.

After David Olney, I will be sticking around for a late show line-up that includes Jon Latham, Don Gallardo, and Stuffy Shmitt.  Birmingham's The Burning Peppermints open the night.

And the great music continues throughout the rest of the week and weekend.

Now, it is Wednesday.  After slogging through the first two days of the work week, we reach mid-week and feel the need to get "Wild"!

Wild Wednesday Morning Shuffle - Gin and Tonic Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Well! Made it to the mid-point of the week.  Being off Monday has thrown everything off for me...

Last night, I had a great night at The High Watt.  Seeing Todd Farrell perform for the first time in I don't know how long - it was great to be reminded of what an incredible songwriter he is. Heard some old favorites plus some songs which will be on the next Benchmarks album whenever that comes out. Saw Arliss Nancy from Denver for the first time last night. Really dug their music and energy.  Then, I got to catch the first part of Bill Eberle's set - same band as I saw at the Basement a few weeks back. Still awesome.

Then, I had to dart across the river to catch the last part of the Family Wash set of Sean Quinn and the Tremblers (featuring Jon Latham on guitar).  Man these guys sounded so good. Kind of a power poppy vibe - think Big Star/ Beatles and and... Great songs - can't wait for the album!

Well - we have a pretty wild shuffle for a Wednesday.  Note - I could not find several of the actual songs for the video playlist, but I made some strategic substitutions. Enjoy.
