Tomorrow night is the kick off of the Magnolia Roads American Roots Hoedown VII.  Night 1 will be at Dee's Country Cocktail Lounge.  Night 2 (Saturday) will be at The 5 Spot.  And Night 3 (Sunday) will be a house show in Oak Hill. 

One of the featured performers on Night 1 at Dee's is an E2TG favorite - David Newbould. 

How people choose to navigate through life’s highs and lows reveals a lot about their personal character, not to mention what they’re willing to do in order to get to the other side of the horizon. Chronicling these seemingly endless cycles of daily peaks and valleys forms the backbone of  Newbould's 2019 album, Sin & Redemption.

It is Wednesday already!  A rainy day in Nashville.  The news of the day is depressing and disheartening. It is one of those moments where I cannot believe we have gotten to the place we are. I try to be positive and hopeful, but today I am not feeling it.

I do know that music has ALWAYS been there for me, and I expect that nothing will change that.  So, let's get to what we do here!

13. "World on Fire" by  Blue Eyed Christ, En Esch, Mea Fisher

A state of the world statement from this Chicago based industrial electronic rock band. Hard and pretty cool.

14. "Bed of Sun" by Cap'n Marble

Indie pop duo from California who met in Boston at Berklee School of Music. Breezy and catchy.

15. "Truth Be Told" by The Attic Movement

UK based alternative rock band with a beautiful song. 

16. "Conipher's Song" by Lazaris Pit

Hardcore psychedelic post punk from Raleigh, North Carolina. Digging it. 

17. "Can't See the Light" by The Wolfhounds

The Wolfhounds formed in 1984 and were included on the C86 compilation. The broke up around 1990 but reunited in 2006 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of C86. This is their latest release.

So, first of all, I don't think I know much of anything for sure. I have thoughts and ideas and guesses, but those change almost daily if not more often. It is disturbing to me how even in this time of shared trauma and shared tragedy and shared inconvenience, we are still very much divided.  There are definitely agents of this divide, but this paragraph is not aimed at any one side... why are there even sides except man vs. COVID-19. Once again we are faced with a seemingly insurmountable inability or even willingness to find any common ground.  It is possible for people of good faith and good conscience to disagree on approaches and philosophies, and as I have said many times, I am someone who - though steadfast in my opinions on certain matters - believes there is value in compromise and hearing and listening to opposing viewpoints.

But any such compromise can only be reached - I think by finding common ground and building upon that. And, in the case of COVID-19 the common ground should be obvious, but it is sadly not the case. Even if evidence staring us in the face, we argue and disagree and toss around conspiracy theories...

I don't know if I am making sense. I'm thinking about the whole reopening vs. staying the course. I respect that people have different opinions on this and I don't think most who are pushing to reopen want people to die anymore than I believe most of  those urging caution and slowing down on reopening are purposely trying to wreck the economy. I sincerely hope that the majority of people want everyone to be safe and healthy and also want to minimize the economic impact which many people of all sides are feeling.  But, the problem is we cannot even agree on numbers and facts and what those numbers mean or don't mean. So, we argue and fight and send nasty memes and ridicule and belittle.  There is a small faction that desires chaos and division, and unfortunately, that small faction seems to be winning the day sometimes.

But - I am an optimist. And so, I hope for solutions and resolutions and better judgement to rally.

At the beginning of this pandemic, I used the term "back to normal" wondering how long before we would get back to normal.  But, these days I think more about the new normal. Regardless of party affiliation or personal opinion, what we are striving for us not a return to normal, but rather an push toward the beginning of what comes next - which will be post-normal or a new normal.

Eh.., I will shut up now, and play some music.

It seems like almost my entire Facebook timeline is about John Prine, which would indicate that I follow my kinds of people.

John Prine's death at the hands of COVID-19 hit hard in my community and for me personally. First of all my thoughts go out to his family and close friends. For the rest of us, this was a hard loss in season of hard losses.

One thing I have learned about grief over the past nearly four months is that grief comes in waves and that subsequent losses aren't measured by a comparison of how close you were to the person who you lose. Rather, each loss is a ripple that compounds with the previous losses and sometimes the emotions of one loss (which may seem out of proportion to your relationship) are actually reflections and amplifications of other losses.

I don't know if that made sense, but I know what I am trying to say, but what I am trying to convey is that we all need to prepare for more losses over the next few weeks and to be prepared losses which hit harder than you might otherwise expect.

Stay safe everyone. We are getting through this and we will get through this.

The other certainty is that we will all be changed by this experience. It seems like a lot of out of our control. But, we can effect change on our new world. Will that new world reflect love and compassion and a priority on things that bring joy and newly honed commitment to priorities which match our values and greater self-sufficiency combined with a renewed understanding of our interdependence on each other. 

It is all too much to take in all at once. So take it all one at a time and breath and focus on your breath and be gentle with yourself. Productivity within this crisis is admirable perhaps but it is not a competition and it is not mandatory.  Stay connected even as you are keeping a safe distance and self-isolating.

As John Prine didn't sing, "It's a Happy Enchilada and you think your gonna drown..."

The first official day of the Americana Fest is in the books. As has become my habit, I went to the Basement East for the Better Together kickoff event. It was packed and I saw so many friends from out of town and in town. The music - as always - was top-notched - this year honoring the City of Memphis - with songs from Memphis, associated with Memphis, and about Memphis. The list of performers included some of the hottest tickets on the AMA line-up and many of my friends.

Sleep is optional during AMA week, but I got a couple of hours. 

Tonight, Broken Jukebox Media is hosting an unofficial showcase at The 5 Spot - the night includes several artists we have featured at E2TG (Broken Jukebox is one of my major sources of new music).  After that, I will head to Dee's for another unofficial event - this hosted by Nick Nace and featuring a full-band set from the one and only Jon Latham and a lot more.

On with the shuffle - It is Wild Wednesday, but once again, I am sticking with our New Music playlist because I have so much new music to get to... It's still kind of wild!
