E2TG 12/23/2020 - Eve Eve - Grateful for Christmas Mix (Be it Heaven or Hell Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Our last post before Christmas.  I hope no matter what or how you celebrate (or don't) that they coming days, weeks, months, and year are filled with better days, new opportunities, love, joy, and peace.

Our Featured Friday Recap moves along with songs 33-40:

33. "Methadone Guy" by Hadnot Creek
First up, we have the opening track from Hard World by this Charlottesville based folk-rock band.  Wonderful song.
34. "I Won't Change My Mind" by Remington Super 60
Next up, we have the return of this Norwegian band to the Playlist with their latest single.
35. "Drifter" by Jessye DeSilva
Next up, we have the new single from this Boston-based singer-songwriter. As the writer of a novel called The Drift - this song title caught my attention, but the song itself kept it.  This is a wonderful song by a new-to-me artist that I look forward to finding out more about.
36. "Rule #13 - Waterfall" by Fish in a Birdcage
Fish in a Birdcage is Dustan Townsend a young musical virtuoso originally from Red Deer, Alberta and currently in the midst of a two-year long busking adventure through Europe (currently in Spain). The name of his third album is Waterfall and this is the lead and title track.
37. "Harmless" by Phriendly Phoes
Next up, we have the title track from the debut album by this psychedelic funk/hip-hop duo from Lewiston, New York. Really cool stuff.
38. "2 AM (Let's Do It)" by J'seann
Next up, we have a track from an up and coming rapper from Chicago.  This was a direct artist submission that caught my attention. Check it out.
39. "Under the Skin" by Seven Red Lions
Next up, some indie rock from London. This latest single was inspired by the pre-Hispanic cultures of South America.
40. "I Like You" by Hook
We close out this segment of music with the latest single from the new wave/indie band from Dublin, Ireland. The band formed in 2019 and released their debut album in March of 2020.  A nice way to close things out.
We are going to take a holiday break and regroup on Monday with the continuation of this extended Playlist as we head into the new year.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle - A Mean Idea Mix

I hope everyone had a great weekend.  It's Monday, it's also Tax Day here in the USA.  Our goal of late, seems to be to cover as much musical ground as possible in the span of 7-10 songs or so.  I hope today's Pre-Shuffle and Shuffle Shuffle do not disappoint.

Let's get to it....

Pre-shuffle:  April Verch is a Berklee trained Bluegrass/Traditional music fiddle player and step-dancer.  She has a new sampler out of Noisetrade, so there is no excuse not to check her music out.  We listened to two selections from the release this morning.

We also heard more music from Taco Land's Pancakes and Pizza album - (see our review). Plus another song from the awesome new record from Sad Baby Wolf.  This morning's Gershwin song is performed by the late, great Rosemary Clooney, and we closed out the Pre-shuffle with John Wesley Harding with the opening track from his 2011 album,The Sound of His Own Voice.

Let's head into the shuffle - now....

Monday Morning Music Shuffle - Sno-Cone Mix

It's all but officially summer.  Temps are supposed to climb into the mid to upper 90s here this week, and I'm sure the humidity will ratchet up and few notches.  Here in the South, we know it's not the heat, it's the humidity....

Reminders:  The Band of the Month polling has begun - exercise your right to check out righteous music and pick your favorite's here. (Voting continues until the end of the month, and this time you can come back and vote as often as you like).

Over the weekend, we offered the World Premier of the brand new promo video for our April Band of the Month - The Disappointment.  The post which is here, also offered detailed to purchase and download the band's latest release and provided details for checking out the band live in Brooklyn.  Again - it is here.

Finally - Ear to the Ground's favorite cartoonist (and an early and often influence on our tastes in music - as well as our partner-in-crime at a number of live shows in the late 80s and early 90s), Ron Ruelle has released a new book featuring the Sunday strips from his At the Zu/Darwin & Co. strips.

You can order the book here. And check out the dedication page!

One last thing before we get to the morning shuffle - Today is the 70th Birthday for the "Cute" Beatle (Paul McCartney) and another Paul (Weller) of The Jam & The Style Council, has released version of  the Beatles' Birthday which you can download today only on Amazon:

Tonight, we plan to load in a ton of songs into the mix, but before we did, we thought we should take a shuffle through some of the coolest songs in our archives.

Blue Sky Mine the sort-of title track to Midnight Oil's 1990 album Blue Sky Mining found the Australian band and their politician/activist/environmentalist lead singer offering up a scathing indictment of the greed over people and the planet mentality, and doing so in an amazingly danceable format.

Don't Be Cruel was recorded in the summer of 1956 in New York City buy a 21 year old singer from Tupelo, Mississippi named Elvis Aaron Presley.  The song was written by Otis Blackwell. The Jordanaires sang back-up on the record. When my daughter was in 4th Grade, I helped chaperone a trip to Memphis which included a tour of Graceland and accompanying us on the field trip was the grandfather of one of my daughter's classmates who happened to be Gordon Stoker - one of the original Jordanaires, how cool is that?

And finally, we have Free Man in Paris by Joni Mitchell from her classic 1974 album Court and Spark.

Court and Spark Court and Spark
Court and Spark isJoni Mitchell's most overt attempt at making a hit record, full ofglossy production, catchy choruses, and even guest stars from everystratum of rock culture, high (Robbie Robertson) and low (Cheech andChong). The record was a smash, reaching number two on the charts inMarch of 1974, spawning three hit singles; Help Me, Free Man in Parisand Raised on Robbery and cementing Mitchell's position as a commercialas well as an artistic force. Sean Nelson, a well known musician himself (Harvey Danger, the Long Winters), is particularly well equipped to understand all the elements that went into the making of this classic album, and he does so with clarity and wit.
