E2TG 2-26-2020 - GFN #3 - More - Pearly Gates Mix (Coney Island High Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Greetings from Nashville Episode 3:

The third edition of my new WXNA show, Greetings from Nashville will hit the airwaves at 6am tomorrow morning.  I hope you will tune in to 101.5FM if you are in Nashville proper, or wxnafm.org wherever you are.  If you won't be awake between 6 and 7, you can catch the show on our archive.  Episodes 1 and 2 are up now, Ep. 3 will be up shortly after the live broadcast ends.
I have a good show lined up - with darker, more noisy tracks to start the show (from today back to the mid 1980s) - segueing into some more songwritery music and more.  I am continuing to feature some of my favorite local music.
If you have an independent Nashville band from say 1980 to now, that you think I need to cover, e-mail me at gfnonwxna@gmail.com.

More:
  • Meanwhile, the next Double Shot falls on Leap Day, February 29, and in that spirit, we are playing songs about leaping, jumping, hopping etc.
  • Piggy-backing on some of my recent writing, I have been focusing my thoughts on what is important. It is sometimes easy to say what is important, but then, the way one spends ones time and money tells a different story.  As we, the collective "we", are being pulled in so many different direction, and as there are voices (internal or external) which try to dictate our priorities. I am reminded to follow that still, small voice which provides a true north.  For me, that north includes creative discovery and cultivating new friendships.
Anyway, onward!

Wednesday Morning Shuffle:

A delightful mixed bag today. Some old friends, some 2019 submissions, and some obscure and not-so obscure gems.

"Coney Island High" by The Everymen (from New Jersey Hardcore)

New Jersey band. The video is a performance of this song from their final show in 2017.

"Petty Tom"  by From Carbon (from Existence)

Manchester band from their 2019 release.

"The Ace" by Bill and Colleen Cade (from Bill and Colleen Cade)

Father and Daughter duo from Texas. A beautiful song. Sadly, Colleen Cade passed away in a car accident shortly after this album was released.
"El Camino Real" by The Luckies (from East of Eden)

Canadian band from their 2019 album.

"Pearly Gates" by The Men (from Tomorrow's Hits)

Brooklyn punk band led by Mark Perro from their fifth studio album released in 2014.

"In the Corner" by Paul Zografi (from Big Hotel)

Local favorite. He has some new music either out or coming out soon.

"Give in to You" by Jennifer Lyn and the Groove Revival (from Badlands)

North Dakota blues/rock band. From a 2018 release.

"Rolling Along" by The Mavericks (from Brand New Day)

2017 album by the band that formed in Miami and who are now based in Nashville.

"The Sun" by Chris J. Connolly (from Moving Maps)

Long Island based singer-songwriter from his 2017 album.

"flaring up" by ricky mirage (from pop goes the sun)

Chicago based artist -  from a 2015 release which came to me via a recommendation by Aaron Lee Tasjan.

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle - 3.5 Degrees Mix

I read somewhere that due to the explosive of social networking - primarily Facebook, the degrees of separation between all human beings has been reduced from 6 to 3.5.  I have no idea if that is true, but it sounds right.  It is always odd when a "Friend Suggestion" comes up and the person and I have mutual friends who come from entirely different parts of my life.

This also falls in line with my philosophy that music is all about connections, and that no matter how diverse and random my music collection is, there is always a way to connect any one artist to another.

First up, Have Mercy is a stand-out track on the Jack White produced Van Lear Rose by Loretta Lynn. What a great collaboration this turned out to be.

Loretta Lynn: Still Woman Enough: A Memoir Loretta Lynn: Still Woman Enough: A Memoir
Loretta Lynn's first memoir, Coal Miner's Daughter, was a #1 national bestseller that sparked an Oscar-winning movie and left fans hungry for more. Now Loretta finishes that story, and the second half of her life is every bit as remarkable and inspiring as the first. In a friendly, down-home style that belies her stature as country music's most celebrated performer, Loretta writes candidly about the price of fame and the stresses of stardom; tells of friends and family she's loved and lost along the way; and shares secrets not included in her first book. But at the heart of this memoir is her stormy relationship with Doo, the man she married at thirteen and stayed with until he died, through his drinking, their violent arguments, and their passionate reconciliations. Loretta reveals the devotion behind "one of the hardest love stories in the world." Filled with intimate portraits of country legends, and brimming with folksy humor, this personal tale of grit, determination, and loyalty will enthrall Loretta's countless fans and anyone who adores a good old-fashioned love story.

Next up is the hard to google band called The Men - they released a stunning album called Leave Home in 2011 and have a new album due out in early March called Open Your Heart. They play hard, loud music with compromise. Today we have a stand out track from the Leave Home LP "( )".

Finally, completing our interesting three song shuffle and proving that the drugs were really good or really bad back in the mid sixties, we have a track whose working title was Tough Apple, but which ended up being called 2000 Light Years from Home and it comes from the Stones' album Their Satanic Majesties Request.
