The three night Magnolia Roads American Roots Hoedown VII is fast approaching.  Three nights of greet roots focused music located at three different venues around town, and featuring some of my favorite artists and bands. 

The festival is heavy with Nashville artists - many of whom we regularly cover, but closing out Night 2 of the Hoedown in one of the non-Nashville bands - deFrance. 

deFrance formed from the muddy banks of the Ouachita River in the vest pocket town of Camden, Arkansas. Called the “hardest working band in Arkansas,” the band has racked up more than 600 shows since forming in 2015. deFrance now calls Little Rock, Arkansas, home but these road warriors carry their modern take on classic rock & roll across the world, having performed shows at legendary international venues as well as earning the respect of fans locally, with two of their songs being selected for use in Arkansas state tourism commercials. The band’s technical prowess and deliverance of a truly pure rock & roll sound has been recognized with support opportunities for Foghat, Bon Jovi, Deep Purple, ZZ Top, Whiskey Myers, Robert Randolph, Shooter Jennings, Morris Day & The Time, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and Living Colour, among others.

deFrance is scheduled to take The 5 Spot stage Saturday night at 11:15.

So - this is the second to the last post of 2020. I don't think anyone needs to recap what a horrible year this has been.  I certainly know that things will not magically get better at Midnight on January 1, but I do hope that arbitrary milestone does prove to mark the beginning of a new phase. 

Tomorrow, I will wrap up some unfinished business from this year and then I will be ready to move forward - bringing only the lessons learned, the goodness and light, and the memories of those lost with me (okay - maybe I will bring more, but you get my meaning).

We've reached the penultimate recap post of this extended Featured Friday Playlist.  Today we have songs 48-54:

48. "Song for Ella" by Cap'n Marble 

Our second time featuring this indie pop duo from Southern California. I love this song. 

49. "So Far From Home" by BUN

Next up, we have the sixth single in eight months from Belgian artist BUN. Brecht - the musician behind BUN started in an instrumental post-metal band called Miava which had developed a good following. Unfortunately, the band's drummer and Brecht's best friend was killed in a hit and run accident. Brecht eventually returned as BUN - as a project to celebrate life. This is my first listen and I dig it. 

50. "Area 51"  by The Star Prairie Project

Next up, we have our second Featured track from Nolen R. Chew Jr. from Star Prairie, Wisconsin who collaborates with musicians and producers from LA to London as The Star Prairie Project. 

51. "Yellowed Pages" by Glenn Morrow's Cry for Help

Next up, we have the lead track from the second album (appropriately named '2') from this New Jersey based band.  This track laments the loss of intimacy of the modern age of communication. 

52. "Gwir" by Tacsidermi

A lot of interesting music coming our way from Wales. This duo came to fruition during and because of the lock down. 

53. "Social Distancing" by Fear Rua

Next up, we have a track from Rhode Island based experimental artist Dylan Murphy aka Fear Rua.  Great ambient, psychedelic vibe. Very cool. 

54. "Fall Away" by Glostik Willy

And we close this segment of music with the new single from Indiana-based hippy metal band Glostik Willy.  I am going to admit I don't really know what hippy metal is - I do know that heavy metal originally emerged from the hippy subculture so... anyway, this is a cool song and a nice way to close out another diverse segment of music.

Looking for a glimmer of hope where I can find it.. There is nothing wrong with hope, but hope cannot be a passive thing. Hold on to hope, as you face a daunting task and work against the odds. 

Lately, it seems like every glimmer of hope is quickly dashed by some bit of bad news. Or maybe, I look for trouble... maybe hope scares me because to hope is to risk being disappointed. Maybe... but, man, living in a negative, fearful, resigned, defeated place is tiring and unsustainable... so hope is a reprieve even if it is temporary.  

"It will all work out in the end..."  I am sure I have used those words and heard those words which are meant to offer comfort. But, in my more cynical moods, I wonder - what does "work out" mean, when is "in the end".  Does "in the end" possibly refer to come afterlife or heaven?  Does "it will all work out" really promised anything?  Work out - how? for who?  The other expression is everything happens for a reason - I used to say that,too, but I have amended that to "there is a way to find meaning in everything that happens"

First up today, we have a lovely track from the self-produced EP by Colorado singer-songwriter Sunny Gable. The EP was made during quarantine, and it sounds fantastic.

24. "Vampire's Ball" by Sluka

Next up, we have a single from San Diego art rock band Sluka -led by Christopher Sluka - who was released eleven albums.  His career began in New York in the 1980s, and he has a large following all over the world. 

25. "Uncovered" by Max Helgemo

Next up, we have the new single from Nashville based singer-songwriter Max Helgemo. The song represents Helgemo's introduction to his new city - an imagined naked run through the streets representing his desire to open himself up as an artist. 

26. "Mr. Rain" by The Kondoors

Next up, we have the return of UK husband and wife duo, The Kondoors to the Featured Friday Shuffle. Their latest single was just released. The Kondoors is Gavin Conder and Jessica Greenfield (Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds). The song is a powerhouse rock duet - and stands in contrast to "Good Times" the first song by the duo we featured. 

27. "Our Moment" by Adrift

And, we close out this segment and this week's playlist with a wonderful new track from Toronto based producer and artist Adrift. The song is electronic based indie rock with a positive vibe. A very cool way to close out this week of music.

Moving tentatively forward... trying to find a path. I believe we will come through this, but I am certain we will be changed. I think about events in my lifetime. I think about 9-11 and that did permanently change us. But, for those of us not directly impacted by the attacks themselves, for many of us, our daily lives didn't change that much, and in that respect it is different.

I think about Nashville still reeling from the March 3 tornado and then to have this on top of it. What will East Nashville look like when this is over. I think about my many friends directly and profoundly affected by this - what will their lives look like on the other side. When the venues reopen - and it is declared all safe (not my Trump but by doctors and scientists) - will we still be cautious in our interactions. I keep saying that I can't wait to be able to hug all my friends but that first time -what will it be like.

There are great sites for getting up-to-date and accurate information. Don't rely on social media posts or even mainstream news - which at best may be dated and incomplete. Check with the health department in your area.

E2TG is a music blog, and although, I like to use this space to share my thoughts and feelings, they are just that, thoughts and feelings.

Anything that seems like advice, take with a grain of salt. But, do find people you can talk to and share your fears and frustrations.  We may be physically separated but you are not alone.

We have a song premiere tomorrow morning that I am very excited about. And, we have some cool new music on the way for Friday. I have updated the Recent and Upcoming Release listing, and I added a bunch of new music to my phone. None of the stuff came up in today's shuffle, but they will come up.

So, I have created a Spotify Playlist that highlights some of the music featured on E2TG in 2019.  I tried to pick one song for each artist. The playlist is currently over 10 hours long - which means we got to feature a lot of music this year. I will be finalizing the playlist over the long weekend and will use it for my December shuffles - recounting some of my faves of the year.  I think I will also start phasing in some of the new features of E2TG v3.0 which will fully go live in January.  For now, I am going to stay with Blogger but I may move to a new platform later. 

Any way, let's close out this short week with a long Wild Wednesday shuffle that definitely lives up to the name...

Added a bunch of new music to the playlist last night.  Look for some of those to pop up soon. I try to get through as many e-mails as I can, but I get a lot. Patience and perseverance are always helpful. I know that a bunch of really cool stuff is passing me by, but sometimes, I just have to let it go. It is (I am aware) an amazing problem to have.  When I started E2TG eight years ago, I had to go out searching for music to feature.

Anyway, today is Wednesday and it is time for another of what we call "Wild Wednesday" on E2TG.  New stuff, old stuff, all-time favorites, hidden gems from the depths of memory card, previous featured artists, missed/late postings, you name it.. let's go!

You know, I am generally a pretty optimistic guy. I mean, I don't think I'm Pollyanna about it, but I do tend to look for the bright spot in things or at least the light at the end of the tunnel (that is hopefully not an on-coming train.)

Lately though, it is not easy to maintain optimism. It's not just the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue... I actually think he is more of a symptom (although a potentially fatal symptom) of a large problem.  I often hear the suggestion that we are part of an empire in decline. And maybe we are... maybe we have been for some time. There were certainly warning signs at various points of my life.

As someone who is deeply passionate about music (and art and creativity of all kinds), it is very hard to see incredibly talented people - who pour their souls into their art and who make vital and beautiful things - struggle to find an adequate platform for their work.  And then to read about a junk culture flash-in-the-pan figure getting signed to a record label... I just don't know.  It's easy to lay blame on the record companies... or on Spotify or whatever... but I think this all goes to a deeper problem in our society - where as a whole, we don't value truth or beauty or substance...

For the most part, I try to focus upon the communities of which I am a part that do value those things... and I do my part to put truth and beauty and substance into the world...


To that end... it is Wednesday... I call it Wild Wednesday... but really it's like classic E2TG day... from the beginning, I hoped to place new and under-heard music alongside some of my all-time favorites and recent discoveries (of older music) and oddball choices that stretch and challenge genre boundaries...   Eventually, things got so big that I needed to create specialized playlists for new music or Nashville music or whatever... but I am glad that I can have one day a week to shuffle all of the music I have on my phone and see what madness ensues....

Can you believe May is almost over?  I say almost because we have two bits of unfinished business to get to before we can put it in the books...

Last before first, we have the grand finale of the E2TG Residency at The 5 Spot in East Nashville.  This month has been amazing, and I hope you will come out to help us close this thing out in style.  FuzzQueen are opening the night.  I am so psyched to see them...  Later, it is Amelia White and her Blue Souvenirs featuring Sergio Webb, Parker Hawkins, Megan Carchman, and Dave Coleman!  I will be reading some more of my fiction/poetry, and I have some beer koozies that need a good home.  Come hang with us!

First, though, we have one final shuffle for the month of May.  It is Wednesday so we shuffle up all the songs on my phone.  We have a good mix of old and new music. Let's get to it!

Remember when he who shall not be names stated: "I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn't lose voters,"?  And his supporters did not even realize they were being insulted?  Well, every time his administration or he makes another insane, blatantly corrupt, or bizarre move - it's like he is metaphorically trying to prove that.

Made it out for part of $2 Tuesday last night.  Finally got the chance to see E2TG favorite Gabrielle Louise live -and she was wonderful.  Dylan Lancaster was next, and I really dug his set, and as always Derek Hoke (backed by Mark Robertson and Steve Latanation) was awesome!  I had to bow out before The Prescriptions played the late set, but they are going to be holding down that spot for several weeks - so hopefully I can catch them soon.

TONIGHT!!!!!! The E2TG Sixth Anniversary celebration continues with Week 2 at The 5 Spot in East Nashville. As previously announced, Jon Latham is not going to be able to perform due to some serious health issues.  We have some friends of Jon and friends of friends... set to try to fill the gap he left.

Kristen Englenz and Nick Nace - who Jon picked to open for him - are going to get the night started.  Darrin Bradbury, Matt Benjamin, and Sean Quinn and the Tremblers are set to perform. I have beer koozies! Free to the first ten paying customers. I will be reading a short section from one of novels-in-progress.  The night is going to be dedicated to Jon, and the money we make will be going toward his medical expenses.  We will also be talking about a Benefit being planned for June 5 at The Basement East.

Today, we are intentionally "Wild" and coincidentally begin with a couple of tracks that are on our "New Music" playlist - to even things out from yesterday.

So - I'm gonna let today's shuffle do the talking...

but, I do want to report on another long but excellent night of music at The 5 Spot in East Nashville.

D.L. Duncan continued his month-long residency playing some great blues-based music. First playing accompanied by a snare drum - and then by a full-band including a wonderful horn section.  Duncan was joined for several songs by the legendary guitarist Jack Pearson.

The late show featured several favorites of mine beginning with Taylor Alexander - back by Jess Perkins on pedal steel, then Rocky Bottom, the always incredible Rayvon Pettis, and The Big Dumb - featuring Javi Jones and Anna Joy Harris.  I had never seen Javi in this setting, and I have to say I loved it.

Tonight, the Smoky White Devils wrap up their residency with guest Ted Drozdowki's Scissormen (next Thursday will be the 25th Anniversary of Richie Owens and the Farm Bureau.)

Onward to Topical Thursday on E2TG.  I really should write this disclaimer and save it and copy and paste each week... but here goes...

I selected a topic (its a a very loose topic) and I went through my list of songs and picked out songs that fit (seemed to fit) or at least struck me in the moment of selection as fitting the topic. Very short on time... last night was great. The finale of the October Crackerboots residency - with Peter Cooper opening accompanied by Tom Jutz. I love Peter Cooper's songs so much, plus he closed with "Boulder to Birmingham" by Emmylou Harris and Bill Danoff, which I love.

Great show for the late show - loved The Battlefield - who I last and first saw three years ago at a New Faces night at The Basement. They from L.A., and I really dig their music.  And course, Don Gallardo.  His songs!  Man!  Adam Kurtz was on pedal steel - which serves as a transition...

Tonight, among what I am sure are a ton of worth things - including some that I would really like to see, Zach Schmidt will be celebrating the release of his new album, The Day We Lost the War. There will be special guest galore - and it's free (BYOB) at imogene + willie. 7pm. SHARP! Oh yeah, the transition... Adam Kurtz will be playing this show, too.

Happy Thursday... sending good thoughts to everyone in the path of Hurricane Matthew. And especially thinking about those who have lost life and property in the Caribbean.

Congratulations to WXNA-LP Nashville for finishing second to Lightning 100 in the Nashville Scene Readers Poll for Best Radio Station.  A remarkable achievement for a low power station that has only been on the air for 4 month.  Super proud to play a small part in the station, but props go out to our super hard working and dedicated Board and our fearless leader Heather Lose. This achievement is a testament to the impact the station has already had on the community.

Well, the Buck N Stuff show was the epic throw down that I expected. My favorite moment was the Buck Owens cover that they performed. #BuckNStuff are the absolute best. They announced last night that they will be playing The 5 Spot for New Years Eve.  Make your plans now.  2017 is sure to be the Year of Buck N Stuff.

It is Thursday when we throw things back, and I think we have a really awesome shuffle today... shall we?

Welcome back to E2TG!  So, last night Amelia White wrapped up her month-long residency at The 5 Spot. As special guest Reckless Johnny Wales said, this means she is now a doctor!  Reckless Johnny sounded fantastic - as usual - backed by Chris Tench on guitar.

Amelia had an incredible band backing her including Robert Mache from Memphis, Parker Hawkins, and Fran Breen. Plus Chris Tench sat in for most of the set. Special guest Julie Christensen added her legendary vocals to some of Amelia's songs plus did a few of her own songs. Surprise guest Tomi Lynn Lunsford joined Christensen to sing background on "Dogs Bark" and then stayed to back up the last song of the night.  A wonderful ending to a fantastic residency.

Tonight: The 5 Spot is once again the place to be. Mark Robinson wraps up his Residency (I guess he will be a doctor now, too) in style.  With an expanded showband with Mark Jordan and Ben Graves joining Daniel Seymour and Rick Schell.  Plus the special guests are two of the finest vocalist Nashville has to offer... Jonell Mosser and Vickie Carrico.  Noted music blog, Ear to the Ground called the Mark Robinson Band one of the best live bands around, and they have certainly lived up to that this month.  Tonight will be one to remember. 6:00pm.

Okay! I have a lot of ground to cover, and I am really, really tired... so let's get to it!

Last night, I spent almost exactly seven hours at The 5 Spot listening to live music, and what a night it was.  David Olney wrapped up his August Residency in fine fashion.  Drawing from his immense catalog of songs, Olney - backed by a great band (Daniel Seymour, Justin Amaral, and Ward Stout) - was fiery, passionate, and powerful.  Great moments: his song, "Titanic" (told from the point of view of the iceberg flowed into a Dylan Thomas poem.  "Deeper Well" flowed into "Kubla Khan" and then "Who Do You Love?" (Bo Diddly) before finding its way back home.

Later, The Burning Peppermints, from Birmingham, Alabama tore up the stage with a high energy, high volume sonic assault.  Next, Jon Latham reminded once again why I named him Artist of the Year for 2015. Playing a mixture of old and new songs, Latham goes to some higher plane when he performs, and he takes the audience with him.  If you think this is hyperbole, then you have never seen Jon Latham perform.  Following Jon Latham is not easy, but Don Gallardo and How Far West came armed with incredible songs and the ability to play them very well. It is always a treat to see Gallardo play. Last night was no exception.  The night ended in the early hours of this morning with Stuffy Shmitt and an awesome band that included Sergio Webb on guitar. Shmitt moved to Nashville from New York a while back, and this was my first opportunity to see him live.  It was a wonderful set of music - quirky lyrics, solid music, humor, courageousness. I hope to see him play again really soon!

Tonight:  Well, tonight. First of all there is a ton of amazing live music going on tonight (and every night) in Nashville. I could probably write a daily blog just on the live music scene, and I still couldn't cover everything.  Tonight alone, I can off the top of my head think of five or six shows that I could attend - everything from a huge free downtown outdoor festival to a more intimate house show.  Where I will be: Starting at 6:00p.m., Mark Robinson begins his month-long Showband Residency with a stacked deck of incredible guitar players - Richie Owens, Ted Drozdowski, and Nick Kane sharing a stage with Mark Robinson is a sight I cannot wait to see. In about 5 and 1/2 hours (as I am writing this), I will be able to experience it. Nashville is known as guitar town and this quartet of players are the cream of the crop.

After that show, a bunch of us will be headed to The Basement East for an star-studded tribute/benefit for Louisiana flood victims. Proceeds from the show which features folks like Kevin Gordon, Will Kimbrough, Grimey, members of Better Than Ezra, and certain Red Dirt Girl will go to the Better Than Ezra Foundation and go toward supplies for victims of the devastating floods.  Great music will also be happening at The 5 Spot and The Basement - both those shows featuring artists I love. Oh for a cloning machine or a time machine...

Sue Havlish and I recorded a Double Shot with Joe and Sue show which will be broadcast on July 16.  Meanwhile, we will be back in the studio on Saturday for a live show with the theme of "Our Favorite Years."  Sue and I will each select songs which were released during what we have identified as our favorite year.

I messed around with posting an MP3 to YouTube and posted this video for one of my poems... I posted this to Facebook, but in case you missed it....




Tonight is one of those Nashville nights where there is a ton of things going on... I want to recommend that whatever you do, your night start with Don Gallardo's residency at The 5 Spot. This is the 4th of 5 weeks.  I have made it to the last three and they have been absolutely amazing. The one and only Jon Byrd is the special guest this week.

This weekend is Nashville Pride, and it seems more important than ever to support the LGBTQ community.  Daphne Willis (who we have featured on E2TG a few times) will be performing on the main stage at 1:15 on Saturday.  She is a phenomenal Nashville pop artist. Her latest single is called, "The Struggle is Real" (and it is)....

Meanwhile, it is actually Thursday and that means, it is time for us to throw it back.... Today's list (I can say with some confidence) is one that you will only see and hear on E2TG!!
