E2TG 9/27/2021 - Featured Friday on Monday (Fresh Start) - Bloodlight Mix (The Grand Design Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Okay - a combination of things: Americana, work, lack of sleep, mood - forced me to kind of punt on the blog for the end of last week.

I do have a brand new Featured Friday Playlist - which I am unveiling a couple of days late.

As always enjoy! Give our Playlist a follow if you are so inclined, and if you find music you love, give the band or artist some support.

E2TG 5/29/2020 - Featured Friday -

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

There is so much I want to write at this moment. I am not sure where to begin. These are truly frightening times on many different levels. I was not in a good place yesterday even before American journalists were arrested on live television. Even before the President of the United States threatened violence against American Citizens.

I had to make my basically weekly trek out of my place to pick-up groceries. It seems like most people I saw are just going about their lives as if the pandemic was over. The thought that went through my head was in March and early April, it did basically feel like we were "all in this together", but that is no longer the case. Wearing masks has been politicized to the point that people wearing masks are being accosted by people not wearing masks.

What is happening in Minneapolis has eclipsed all of the those concerns. It is a mess for sure, but it did not start with George Floyd, I hope this time will be a turning point for our country, but I don't know...   We are so fundamentally divided as a nation - we aren't just split in two, we are shattered in many different ways. Everything can potentially be political - from fried chicken and pizza to public figures and yes, masks. At this point, we can watch the same video clip or read the same quote and our perception of can be the opposite depending on our political leanings.

So, here I sit at the end of another work week and work month. I will be working from home for at least another month. I am not sure when I will feel safe going out for more than the brief moments I have to venture out. With the way people are acting, it may be a while.

I continue to lean into music. I miss live music, but not enough to put myself or others in danger.

But, this is a music  blog, so let us get on with it!

Well, it is Friday and time for a new Featured Friday Playlist. As we did last week (and plan to do going forward), we will be highlighting all the songs/artists in this week's Playlist.  Beginning with songs one through six down below today.

You can listen to and follow the playlist on Spotify - now!

Wild Wednesday Morning Shuffle - Nylon Kisses Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

My novel, The Drift is out now!  Paperback or Kindle (Buy the paperback and get a Kindle version for just $.99)

E2TG 7th Anniversary Residency is coming in June to The 5 Spot!

Week 1:  Clark Paterson, The Big Dumb, Rayvon Pettis
Week 2: The End Men, Ted Drozdowski's Psychedelic Circus, Ben de la Cour
Week 3:  Brian Milligram, Microwave Mountain, The Coal Men
Week 4: Joanna Barbera, Bee Taylor, Eli Cook

Last night, I caught the Bruce Springsteen tribute at The Basement East. A suburb band performed Born in the USA and a ton of other songs.  Singers included Charles Esten (Nashville, Whose Line is It Anyway?), Smooth Hound Smith, J. Marco, Andrew Leheay, Bill Eberle, and many more).  Jon Latham closed the show and as per usual brought down the house.  Fun show!

Tonight is night three of the Darrin Bradbury, Jon Latham, and Nick Nace residency at The 5 Spot.  The first two weeks were awesome, and I expect nothing less than awesome tonight.  It's an early show so you have plenty of time to catch other shows after or get home if you need to call it a night early.

It is Wednesday - and that is the day when we shuffle through all the songs on my phone memory. Anything can happen and usually does... let's go!

Topical Thursday Morning Shuffle - Ain't Democracy Wonderful Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Busy, busy...   Went out to see Jon Byrd and Byrd's Auto Parts at The 5 Spot. Really great set. Cool tunes, a great band. Wendy Newcomer joined Byrd to sing a few songs.  Great hang. Talked a little to Don Gallardo who shared some updates about his next album. This makes me really excited.

It is Thursday - time to head back to my Topical Thursday playlist of songs that thematically or titular-wise fit a loosely defined and unexplained topic of my creation.  The connections are in my mind only and really this is mostly an excuse to play some really cool tunes.  Read what you want into my selections, but I do not mean to imply that any of these artists mean for their songs to be interpreted how I did.

Running late due to some non-technical difficulties.... what can I say, Wild Wednesday is not just a shuffle thing...

Trivia: I previously had a Gin and Tonic Mix shuffle for a completely different reference...

Let's jump right in with a pretty darn wild Wednesday shuffle

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle - Boys Like Me Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

If trudging through the work week is like climbing a mountain, then my question has to be is Wednesday really the day we get over the hump or is it just a day that finds us clinging desperately to the sheer face of a rocky cliff and wondering how the hell we are going to make it the rest of the way?  Food for thought... happy Wednesday!

Thursday Morning Music Shuffle - Poorer Every Day Mix

So, Nashville is getting a lot of hype these days... East Nashville more specifically.  Is it deserved or not? I'll let someone else answer that deep and complicated question. However, what I will do, is tell you just a bit about one particular night in East Nashville (last night to be specific), and I will let you process this information how you will....

The night began with David Olney in his penultimate* Happy Hour show at The 5 Spot opening his show with an incredibly awesome recitation of Kubla Khan, and the night ended (almost) about six hours later at Fran's Eastside with Tim Carroll and Darrin Bradbury doing a version of Freebird that made me a fan of that song (or at least a fan of their version).

We have a mixed bag of cool tunes in today shuffle, so let's do it!

Full-Ride Friday Music Shuffle - Covered in Dust Mix

I didn't sleep particularly well last night, and so I knew I would need some cool tunes to make it through the morning commute. With that in mind, I decided to run my usual shuffle for the full ride into work, and thus was born a new feature* at Ear to the Ground called Full-Ride Friday (hashtag #frf - patent pending** - void where prohibited) **there is not patent pending...

* Bloggers Note: I sure hope no one notices that about 90% of the time I announce I new feature, it never appears again.  If they notice, they may realize that I'm just making this up as I go around and thus may figure out that I'm not a real music blogger.

Anyway, I hit shuffle and 21 songs later, I made to my desk to begin my day...   Go past the jump to experience the first (and maybe last) ever Full-Ride Friday Shuffle!

Friday Morning Music Shuffle - Experience Mix

Today's shuffle is all about experiences (or at least I've tried to make it so): good, bad, past, and future... Are you experienced?  'Cause I am...

#E2TG is not at SXSW (This is a CXCW plug by the way)

If, like me, you are not at the South by Southwest confab (conflag?) (whatever), you probably have some good reasons.  Can't get off work, lack of funds, the beer is too expensive, too many damn hipsters, it involves putting on shoes --- the list goes on.

For the last four years, there has been a great alternative to SXSW.  I hope by now, you are familiar with Couch by Couchwest -where the beer is cheap and the only hipster is you.  CXCW is an on-line music festival featuring a staggering number and variety of talented folks who submitted specially made videos specifically for the festival. Often, the videos feature couches. Often they don't. They may be filmed in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, on front or back porches, or in wide-open fields.  Jonny Fritz when he still went by Jonny Corndawg recorded one from the inside of a drainage pipe.

The atmosphere around Couch by Couchwest is low-key, laid back, and light-hearted.  Tacos are a popular food, beer is the drink of choice (often), and most importantly, the music is mind-blowing.

If you are a regular Ear to the Ground reader you probably already know about CXCW and I hope you've been keeping up.  The festival is on day four, and if you haven't tuned it yet, you have some catching up to do.  Go now to Couchbycouchwest.com.

Ear to the Ground favorites like:

The Foresters

Sci-Fi Romance

MAKAR

Tim Lee 3

The Imperial Rooster

Tipi Valley

Todd Farrell, Jr.

Jeanette Lynne

(And probably some I'm forgetting (sorry!))

have already made an CXCW'14 appearance. Plus - we've been introduced to some amazingly talented folks who will more than likely grace our pages soon.

We expect to see The End Men, Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray, and much, much more the before the festival wraps up.

Among the most buzz-worthy moments so far has been Jamie Painter's cover of Jason Isbell's Cover Me Up which has earned a recommendation from Mr. Isbell himself.  Oh and Two Mule Blues set shit on fire

So, in conclusion, I get why you're not at South by Southwest. I'm not there with you, but why the heck aren't you at Couch by Couchwest?  Shoes are optional and probably not encouraged.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle - A Few of Favorite Things 2013 Mix - Part Two

First of all... Tuesday? Really? Just Tuesday?

Second... how about a couple of my favorite Christmas songs...

Third... Rest in Peace to Mr. Ray Price. In seeing some of the news reports, I was most struck at how his voice held up into his late 70s/early 80s. So smooth...  Thanks for the music.

Now... to today's music...

Friday Morning Music Shuffle - Superstar Mix

We've reached the end of the week.  To get us into the weekend, I have a long list of additions to the E2TG Hall of Fall, and a pretty sweet little music shuffle.

E2TG Hall of Fame:
13. The Foresters (Bethany, CT) (ed. note: Some may say they are too young for a Hall of Fame, but it's my Hall of Fame, and by their inspiring dedication to their craft, they have already earned their place - even as I acknowledge their best work is ahead of them - I think that is true for most if not all of our inductees)
14. Those Mockingbirds (Montclair, NJ)
15. You and Me (Montreal, QC)
16. MAKAR (New York, NY)
17. The Gypsy West (Brooklyn, NY)
18. Tipi Valley (Swansea, UK)
19. Jo Wymer (Freehold, NJ)
20. Sci-Fi Romance

The inductees will continue. There are still some major favorites of mine who have not been added  yet.  Rest assured this will be rectified sooner than later.  I want to make more progress on the Hall of Fame Page before I add too many more.

Here's the Shuffle-

Monday Morning Music Shuffle - Substrata Mix

We're back.  It's been almost a week since the last shuffle.  Since that post, we saw an awesome if all too brief set from Black Jake and the Carnies and we scanned in some old Spin magazine clippings from the mid-80s. One post about the Minutemen has received over 120 "likes" since Saturday afternoon.

But, we are rested and rejuvenated and ready to bring you the constant variety of music.

PRE-SHUFFLE:

"Вийди, Вийди, Іванку (Vyjdy, Vyjdy, Ivanku)" by Katarina Ljahovic, Mike Romaniak, Patrick Power, Stephen Kreuger from Нема ні Шнурочка (Nema Ni Shnurochka) (2012)  - More great Ukrainian folk music featuring Patrick Power of Valued Customer and my Instagram friend Stephen Kreuger.

"Lady Luck Death Dance" by Coastwest Unrest from Old Weird America (2010) - there is a real Velvet Undergroundish feel to this song.  Love it.

"Nobody" by Cecile McLorin Salvant from WomanChild (2013)

"Nowhere" by Tipi Valley from Rock 'n' Roll Live On (2013)  - Nobody, Nowhere, Noway, Nohow! ;-)

"Shut Up" by Savages from Silence Yourself (2013)

"Shout it Out" by Mikal Cronin from MCII (2013)

"The War Within" by Churchill from The War Within (2013)

"The Fire Pit" by Ben Shive from The Cymbal Crashing Clouds (2011)

"Humiliation" by The National from Trouble Will Find Me (2013)

Shuffle begins in 3... 2... 1... JUMP

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle - Chili Isn't Chili Mix

Ready Set Go... well, I'm going to be out and about the rest of this week.  I MAY sneak in an entry or two.  In the mean time, I will leave you with another fine, fine mix of music...

PRE-SHUFFLE:

1. "Chili" by Dog Without Warning (Did I mention the latest Dog Without Warning record is bad ass? Well, it is.  My shuffle mode has been digging this song and so have I.)
2."Oh Darlin'" by Mystery Twins (Happy to present another song from this Nashville-based musical side project. - two members of The Clutters)
3. "Infatuation" by Dog Without Warning (Did I mention that the latest Dog Without Warning record is really, really bad ass?  Well, it really really is! This song is one of my favorites from the 'Bark' EP.  Oh who am I kidding, all of the songs on 'Bark' are my favorites.)
 4. "The Escape" by SkyBurnsRed (more music from this hot UK band).
 5. "Sorry, But I'm Yours" by Ben Shive (Another awesome track from this unique Nashville Singer/Songwriter)
6. & 7. "Is There Anybody Out There?" and "Nothing Stays the Same" by Human Face (Really digging the Brit-Pop feel of this band)
8. "What's So Funny About Peace, Love and Understanding" by Steve Earle (covering Elvis Costello (doing a Nick Lowe tune)) (A live and loud version of the Nick Lowe classic. Trivia, Earle's son Justin Townes is in the band for this song)
9. "Bring Me Backwards" by Ellis Paul (Man oh Man, I dig this song.  Came to me via the latest Feel Bad for You mixtape)

and then we transition into the Shuffle with one of the strongest cuts on the excellent new EP by Tipi Valley

SHUFFLE AFTER THE JUMP!
