Hitting my mid-week stride... this Friday, the new Featured Friday Playlist will cover two weeks of new releases plus other recent submissions we may just be getting to... We are currently wrapping up the current playlist which we originally posted on June 11.  

Featured Friday Playlist recap (Part 7) (songs 25-27):

25. "Lullaby" by Rafa 

First up, we have a new single from this Australian singer-songwriter - born of Dutch and Colombian parents - inspired by the birth of his first child. Rafa is joined by Syd Taylor of Stereo Jane. 

26. "Ain't so Kind" by Supermutt

Next up, we have the lead track from the new album by this rock and roll band from New Jersey. Great stuff. 

27. "Creepy Crawlie" by Muscle Vest

And we close this short segment with the lead track from the new album by this noise rock band from London.  A cool way to close us out. 

We wrap up the Featured Friday Playlist recap (which has spanned two weeks) tomorrow - with the final two songs.

You know the drill - I am running short on time and a ton of music to get to today.. or no further ado... 

Featured Friday Playlist recap Part 4 (songs 23-28):

23. "Flute In Da Hood" by Ambulance On Fire

First up, we have the opening track from the debut EP by this Lithuanian alternative electroacoustic folk duo.  A really fascinated release worthy of your attention.  

24. "Hole In My Heart" by The Low Countries

Next up, we have the lead track from a new EP from UK band The Low Countries - some really lovely UK folk pop with a murky back story and a great sound. 

25. "Mr. Wolf" by Hans Deville (feat. Andrew J. Davis)

Next up, we have the second single from the forthcoming Prophecies of the Lost (due out in August) from the lock-down album of the guitarist of the UK band King Prawn. Great stuff. 

26. "Infernal Heads" by CULT OF DOM KELLER

Latest single from the experimental rock group that formed in 2007. With elements of industrial and psych. I dig this.  

27. "I Better Run" by Napoleon (feat. Shane Told)

Next up, we have the new single from Toronto based alt-punk band Napoleon.  This track features Shane Told of Silverstein. Fast and noisy just the way I like it. 

28. "Moebius" by Trio Nilo

And, we close out this section of music with a new single from this Spanish progressive jazz - a wonderful instrumental track and a great way to take us out of the playlist for today.

"Life is passing me by", "Thanks, but I'll pass", "I passed the test", "I can pass as intelligent", "I don't need a ticket, I have a pass"... English is an interesting language - how one word can have multiple meanings which have to be discerned by their context. 

Just a random thought but it got me thinking about communication and how words and expressions can develop and change over time and by generation or geographic or cultural groups.  How every generation of young people comes up with new expressions - almost a new language that confounds and sometimes annoys the previous generation.  And some new expressions stick and reach the mainstream and other words and phrases and usages fade into obscurity.  

It is also an international phenomenon. In the English speaking world - UK vs. US for example - there are different words for somethings and also - the same but different generational things occur.  It really is amazing that we can communicate. 

And sometimes, someone's speaking or writing can be so filled with idioms and grammatical variations (errors) that the meaning can become obscured - and in order to interpret it becomes a lesson in linguistics. Sometimes, I wish I had a Star Trek Universal Translator for people who are theoretically speaking the same language as me. 

I am not sure why I am thinking about all this...  tangential to all this talk of language and expressions are the general communication issues we all face. I think about e-mails I get for new releases and how sometimes the information I think would be the most important is either omitted or buried in the text (like release date, album title, etc.)

Anyway - onward...   

On we go with the Featured Friday Recap... today songs 27-36:

 

27. "Military Man" by The Rose Petals

Track from the forthcoming debut album (American Grenadine - April 23) by this folk rock duo from Portland, Maine.  We previously featured two separate singles by the band members Peter Donovan and Elijah Ocean. 

28. "Stranger Among Friends" by  Distant Voices

Next up, we have a track from the debut album by UK artist Valdis Stekelis who records as Distant Voices. Long Road to Home is out now. We previously featured an earlier single from teh album. 

29. "Friends" by Vinok

Next up, we have a cool recent single from the Ukrainian/American band who are based in Kiev. Great stuff. 

30. "Things You Said" by Griff Clawson

Next up, we have the latest single from Southern California singer-songwriter Griff Clawson.  We have featured earlier tracks by him, and this latest is really good. 

31. "Mr. Danger" by The L.A. Maybe

Next up, we have some stunning hard rock from this band from the Carolinas. Wonderful grooves here - brought to my mind AC/DC - but not derivative at all. 

32. "Tequila Kisses" by Jon Randall

Singer-songwriter Jon Randall has had a successful career as a songwriter, musician, and producer. He won a Grammy award as part of Emmylou Harris' Nash Ramblers.  His new EP Neon Texas  pays tribute to his Texas roots. 

33. "Post" by Casey Wickstrom; Taylor Rae

Next up, we have a new recording of a song first recorded 10 years ago. Casey Wickstrom is a California based artist and Taylor Rae is a California native now based in Austin. This new recording was backed by a Kickstarter Campaign, and it is a really beautiful and catchy song. Check it out. 

34. "Go Greta" by Sunstroke Rain

Next up, we have a wonderful new single from Swedish visionary artist Sunstroke Rain (the name is an anagram from Karin Turesson - who has worked with numerous Swedish artists including Robyn).  

35. "You Can't Love Me Like I Loved You" by Layla Frankel

Next, we have a single from Nashville-based singer-songwriter Layla Frankel.  It is from her forthcoming Postcards from the Moon which will be out May 1.  She is backed by some top Nashville session musicians on this track. I like it a lot. 

36. "Pushing Me Away" by Mike Donehey

Mike Donehey is best known as the lead vocalist and guitarist for the Dove award-winning Tenth Avenue North.  He is also the brother of Kanene Donehey Pipkin of The Lone Bellow. His new solo effort features a cosmic country feel. His new three-track release A Father & Two Sons is based upon the parable of the Prodigal Son - which each track representing a different character from the parable.  A great way to close out this segment of music.

Late post and I'm short on time... whew!

Today, we wrap up our recap of this week's Featured Friday Playlist.  Please be sure to check out this week's playlist today - before a new playlist arrives around midnight Friday!  Today, we finish up with songs 25-30:

25. "REDRUM" by 3eon Vibe; DESIRE

Leading the way for this segment of music, we have the only single and title track from the upcoming EP by this Melbourne duo who have something interesting and original going on.  I dig it. 

26. "Up Arrow (CSJ edit)" by Gold Hick

Gold Hick is 1/2 of the Norwich band Broads - who we have featured in the past. This is his solo debut - written and recorded in quarantine. James Ferguson named his project after the Guided By Voices song.  

27. "Badminton" by Michael Landin

Next, we have some cool Nordic jazz via the debut solo album by guitarist Michael Landin from Denmark.  He has recruited some great players, and this is a lovely record. 

28. "Let's Slip Away" by Jessy Yasmeen

Next up, we have some dreamy indie folk-pop from this singer-songwriter with Dutch and South American roots. Cool stuff. 

29. "Unconditional" by From Venus

From Venus is the new solo venture of UK based singer-songwriter Crista D'Arcy. Mixing lo-fi beats, synth-tinged folk and trip-hop. Really wonderful sound. A great addition to this week's Playlist. 

30. "Boatman's Weather" by Pace 

And we close out this week's playlist with a dark yet uplifting song from this London based alt-rock band. The song hearkens to a simpler time. A great way to set us adrift from another week's playlist.. or some other boating reference.

Well, I can officially announce, that beginning February 13, I am going to have a second show on WXNA. Greetings from Nashville will air every Thursday from 6-7am.  If you can't catch it live, it will be on the WXNA Archives shortly after the show airs.

I expect the show to the a place Where Music City's Past and Present Come Together. It will be an eclectic mix of genres drawing on the wealth of great music that has come from Nashville, Tennessee.

I expect this show to be a learning opportunity for me as much as for anybody else. I hope listeners will let me know what artists I need to include.

Eventually, I hope to have some guests in to talk about Nashville's musical past and present. While I tend to be a forward-looking type of person, I think we ignore our past  at our own peril. There are people in this town who know the real history, and I believe within that history lies lessons that are gravely needed today.


The recent loss of David Olney has lighted a fire under me to hear some of the stories which reside in the minds of long-time residents of this town.

At the same time, the incredible influx of new people as brought some innovative and creative minds to our town, and these newcomers (relative and actual) are making some great music. I believe they would benefit from knowing what it was like 10, 20, 30, and even 40 years ago. Just as I believe that the "old-timers" can benefit from learning what the newcomers see in our city and what they bring to the table.

These may all seem like lofty goals for an hour long radio show that will mostly be music-based, but as I expect Greetings from Nashville to reflect my diverse tastes and interests, I think it will be help for both the listener and myself to keep in mind the method behind my madness.

2019 was a big year for E2TG.  We kept things pretty simple.  We did a few song and/or video premieres and hosted a five week 8th Anniversary Residency, but mostly, we featured a ton of music via the tried and true E2TG Morning Shuffles.

I have big things in store for 2020.  Things might not kick off right with the changing of the year, but they will come soon.

Christmas Day, I have volunteered to sub for some of the great shows on WXNA.  Here is when you can catch me:  101.5FM in Nashville or wxnafm.org everywhere

12/25/2019  (All Times Central)

9-10AM - I will be subbing for What Moves Me and playing some of my all-time favorite Christmas songs (old and more recent).

5-7PM - I will subbing for the fabulous Eargasm, and playing a selection of favorites from 2019.  This time span will feature both music featured on E2TG plus some other songs I dug this year.

10-11PM and 11PM-1AM  - I will be subbing for I'll Sleep When I'm Dead and Dustbin Days and playing two hours of local (Nashville) favorites from 2019 and one hour of non-local favorites.  These will mostly be music featured on E2TG.

Double Shot has one more show in 2019 - Saturday 12/28 from 9-11AM - Sue and I will playing songs that reflect things that are "new" to us.

Last night was my fourth night in a row out. Two more to go until I take a break (for probably one night).   Last night was a really great night.  The music was top notch - as I expected it to be, but the best part were the incredibly creative and kind people I got to hang out with for a bit.

The night started at Tennessee Brew Works - where our friend George Trouble - in from Asheville - joined Bob Lewis and Megan Palmer. Great to see all of them and to hang with Collins de la Cour who does a great job booking the music there. Plus, saw Erin Nelson (drummer - Nelson, Zimmerman, and Quinn) and others and Kirsten Maxwell - a singer-songwriter who I saw perform on her first day in Nashville.  A lot of good conversations about creativity and following your muse.

Next, I headed to The 5 Spot. More friends there. Arrived just in time to catch Jon Latham and his band (sans Andrew Leahey who had just flown in from Europe). It was there first time playing in several months, and they sounded fantastic. 

Brian Wright and the Sneak-Ups  were next (with Jon Latham joining in this powerhouse line-up).  I think this is one of the coolest things going in Nashville or anywhere. Brian Wright's new album is being finished as I type this - it is going to be a game changer.  Get on board, now! 

David Newbould closed out the night in fine fashion. Newbould has a long and successful career behind him and I think ahead of him, too.  I don't get to see if nearly as often as I like (my fault not his), but it was great to get a reminder of how good a songwriter and performer he is.
