Featured Friday Morning Shuffle - Rodeo Performer Mix

To be honest, I don't know a whole lot about what live music is like in other cities... just what I have heard. I know that Nashville is a great city for lovers of live music - of all variety. I know that musicians don't generally make as much (or often very much) money here as they do in other cities. The number of live music events going on every single night is staggering, and there are always difficult/impossible choices to be made. As a music fan, you sometimes have to make really difficult decisions about what shows to see or if you need to make a much needed night off from going out.
All of that to say, I made my way to The 5 Spot last night for the release show of Justin and the Cosmics PERF record. The album was recorded at Ardent Studio in Memphis. It was a wonderful night of weirdness and music and mayhem. So many memorable moments. From the emcee Square Bill "singing" Prince covers to Scott Collins guitars. Guests like Chris Crofton - in from Los Angeles and riffing on "New Nashville", Thayer Sarrano was captivating, Kim Collins did a intense a cappella song that ended with her being carried from the stage, The Smoking Flowers did an old song by Justin Collins, Robyn Hitchcock with a band that included Pat Sansone (Wilco, Autumn Leaves) (who produced PERF - by the way) did a short set that included some Velvet Underground, John Lennon, and a Soft Boys song written by Hitchcock, Ben Burr read some awesome poetry. But the clear stars of the show were Justin Collins and his band The Cosmics who played a long set of songs from the album, classics from their back catalog, and some choice (and rare for them) covers - including "Police on my Back". It was the most fun I've had since the last time I saw Justin and the Cosmics play.
Tonight, I am looking forward to Chuck Prophet at The Basement East.
Meanwhile, the humidity is now falling from the sky in copious amounts, and we have our "Featured Friday" shuffle. Let's go.

Trending Tuesday Morning Shuffle - Bitter End Mix

All good things must come to an end, and this Thursday, we bid a fond adieu to the E2TG 7th Anniversary Residency. Eli Cook is heading to Nashville from Charlottesville, VA to lay down some of his signature blues-infused rock songs, Bee Taylor (who designed the cool posted above) brings her awesome band to rock your world, and Joanna Barbera is going to captivate you with her gorgeous songs. All that, and I have a few copies of The Drift for sale. As if all of that was not enough, get to The 5 Spot early - right at six long-time Nashville favorite and Seattle native Shane Tutmarc will join us for a short set to get things kicked off in style. 6pm sharp, $5 cover, 21+ (bring valid ID), and be prepared to party.
I am running late. I had to leave work early and I kind of lazed around this afternoon. So, here is a late edition of the Tuesday morning shuffle! Quick and to the point!

Well, this is my last work day of the week - as we head into Easter weekend. Not expecting to post tomorrow, but you never know.
I added some new music to the "New Music" playlist. It was up to almost 590 songs before today's post. We knocked out 11 today, and we have some cool music in the shuffle...so let's rock!

Whew! It's Friday.
Last night, I was at The 5 Spot for the early show, and I caught Will Payne Harrison and Tommy Womack. I had previously seen Will at Dee's one Monday night for just a few songs, so it was good to see an even longer set. Tommy Womack was...well he was Tommy Womack. Backed by a great band including John Jackson on guitar. He played some of his best known songs, "Betty was Black, Willie was White" "90 Miles An Hour Down a Dead-End Street" some new songs, a Daddy song, and even a song from Government Cheese. He ended the set with his version of "Penny Lane".
As always, Nashville has a ton of great live music - every single night. Get out and find something that interests you.
Mark Robinson is playing tomorrow night at The 5 Spot. He is hands down one of my favorite entertainers in Nashville. His live shows are just no-frills great music.
Time hit the shuffle on my "New Music" playlist for what we like to call Featured Friday on E2TG.

Whew! It's Friday.
Last night, I was at The 5 Spot for the early show, and I caught Will Payne Harrison and Tommy Womack. Trending Thursday Morning Shuffle - Heart Beating Mix

I won't take up too much time with this, but I continue to flabbergasted that anyone - regardless of where they fall on the political spectrum can look at the current administration and think, "This is going well". The sheer number of resignations, firings, indictments, guilty pleas... And it has been just over a year. I really does blow my mind that some 30% of Americans still think this is going well.... *sigh*
Meanwhile, it is Thursday in Nashville, and we had snow flurries this morning after several days of warm weather.
Got back out last night for the first time since Sunday... Timothy George (aka The Singing Butcher) was awesome. Followed by the always entertaining Nelson, Zimmerman, Quinn trio. The set included a cover of "I'd Rather Go Blind" which coincidentally was in a shuffle earlier this week by Low Society. Plus, Jon Latham joined them for an Al Green song. There were other classic tunes plus a couple of choice Sean Quinn and the Tremblers' songs. Fun time hanging with friends and singing and dancing.
I broke down and bought a ticket to see Kris Kristofferson in May at the Basement East with Ben Haggard - Merle's son. This is a bucket list kind of thing for me. Both shows sold out pretty quickly.
Well, a technical note, my New Music Playlist died last night. I was adding some songs to my phone and when I added them to the New Music playlist, I found that the playlist just had the 70+ new songs. So, I worked late last night adding albums back to the playlist. I don't know if I got them all, but I ended up with over 500 songs in the shuffle.
So, let's hit shuffle on that newly rebuilt playlist and see where it takes us...

Yesterday, I posted a show alert for Erica Blinn, Andrew Leahey, and Liz Brasher at The 5 Spot. Well, I went to that show last night, and it was fantastic. Saw so many good friends.
Liz Brasher is a force of nature. This was my first time seeing her, and she was amazing.
Erica Blinn is a powerhouse performer. Her set included a duet with Andrew Leahey on "Stop Dragging My Heart Around".
Andrew Leahey was backed by Jon Latham and the rest of his regular band (which also included Leahey). This set included a cover of the Echo and the Bunnymen song "Lips Like Sugar" which took me back to my college days.
Tonight, I am checking out Music City Roots on the Road as they hit 3rd and Lindsley with a lineup that includes DADDY (Will Kimbrough and Tommy Womack), Kevin Gordon, Lillie Mae, and Katie Pruitt. Should be a fantastic show.
Back to our New Music playlist for Trending Tuesday. By the way, according to Facebook's on this date, it seems like two years ago was my first ever "Trending Tuesday" post. Anyway, only four songs in the shuffle today (one was over 13 minutes longs). So, let's shuffle.

Trending Tuesday Morning Shuffle - Foggy Breathing Mix

Visited the East Room in East Nashville last night. Saw Cory Taylor Cox for the first time. Really liked his music. His song "Memphis Kids" (I think that was the title) was great!
Next up was E2TG fave Joanna Barbera. It has been a little while since I saw Joanna perform, and as as always been the case, I loved her music. In addition to her wonderful original songs (included one that was featured in an episode of the show Criminal Minds, she also did a cover of Tom Petty's "Breakdown" that was absolutely stunning and beautiful.
Next up was one of the greatest living songwriters (according to me and NPR), David Dondero. It is always a joy to see him, but perhaps even more so this time. This was the kind of angry folk music that we need more of. He did an updated version of his song "Pity Party" which was written after Columbine. I didn't realize how much I needed to hear music and message delivered in this way*
One of E2TG's all time favorite artists, Darrin Bradbury closed the night with a set that included some of his newest songs and a couple of old favorites. Some time around four years ago, when I first heard Darrin's music, I wrote that he was one of the best pure songwriters around. Meaning, that once you strip away off the extras that make music awesome, you are left with just the song, and Darrin's songs are among the best. That initial assessment as only grown over time. I am excited to hear his upcoming album with all new songs.

*What I realized listening to David Dondero last night is that I have been suppressing a lot of anger of late. I guess it's in my nature to try to offer a measured response to things, but when kids are being murdered in schools and our leaders do nothing (and/or make the situation worse) and when kids finally have enough and speak out and they are attacked and ridiculed and when we have leaders who openly support and elevate racist and xenophobic conspiracy theories and when a presidential candidate who mocked a man with disabilities becomes a president who strips away rights and protections for people with disabilities, then maybe the time for measured responses is past and maybe it is time for anger and for outrage.
Here's the deal, when this cancer which has attacked our nation us eradicated, then we can have a measured discussion about economic policies etc. When this disease is defeated, we can deal with the issues within the opposition party. But, wiping out this infection HAS to be our top priority.
