In November 2013, my friend David Horton sent me a message to let me know that Darrin Bradbury (whose previous band Big Wilson River, I had written about in 2012) was going to be moving to Nashville and to keep an eye out for him.  Darrin started kicking major league ass in Nashville, and I named him my Artist of the Year for 2014. Today, Darrin Bradbury was named one of 10 New Country Artists You Need to Know by Rolling Stone Country.  I could not be more proud.

Tonight I am recommending:  RB Morris with Jon Byrd at The 5 Spot to kick off Morris' month-long residency.  And after that, Drew Kohl will be ecebrating the one year anniversary of his EP, Sweetheart at The Country with other cook folks like Tayor Alexander and Kiely Schlesinger.

Over the course of these last five years, I have had a blast creating playlists that represent the broad spectrum of my musical tastes and interests, and then letting the shuffle function work its magic.  Some folks may think that traditional bluegrass segueing into death metal makes any sense.  But, I disagree..  every odd combination and awkward transition is to my mind a reflection of the fabric of this life....

The Wild Wednesday shuffle is meant to be a celebration of that weird awkwardness... enjoy!

Wednesday Morning Music Shuffle - Isolated Incident Mix

Yeah, yeah, yeah... blah... it's f**king Wednesday and where does the time go when it goes away.  I'm just randomly typing words, and if they make sense, it's not my fault.  In other news, I have no news.

This morning some pretty cool songs to lead us into the day:

First up we have the title track from Sam Phillips 1992 album Cruel Inventions which produced by her husband at the time T Bone Burnett. I'm pretty sure I saw her live back around the time this album came out, but my memory is failing me, and I'll have to check with Rex Silo (as if he has any more working brain cells than I do) to confirm it.  In any event, this is a great album that totally does not sound 20 years old to me.

Trivia: Sam Phillips appeared in the 1995 film Die Hard with a Vengeance.

   

Next up we have Jolie Holland from her 2004 album Escondida with a song called, Goodbye California. To the best of my knowledge, Jolie Holland did not appear in the 1995 film Die Hard with a Vengeance. 

And finally, we wrap up the morning shuffle with a bonus track from the 2011 reissue of the The Rolling Stones' classic album Some Girls. No Spare Parts  features some newly recorded vocals by Mick Jagger who despite doing some acting in his career alas also did not appear in the 1995 film Die Hard with a Vengeance.

Die Hard With a Vengeance - Widescreen AC3 Bruce Willis returns as misfit cop John McClane in the third film in the Die Hard series. Los Angeles is the stunning debut by punk legends - X. John Doe, Exene Cervenka, DJ Bonebrake and Billy Zoom.  Sugarlight is one of the songs on that album that paints a dark yet powerful tableau of a place and time which I never knew and never will experience, but which I can emotionally connect with via the music.

They Might Be Giants have been making great music for a long, long time. They have a distinctive and interesting sound. Join Us came out last year. Can't Keep Johnny Down from that album has a delicious hook and that classic TMBG sound.

Old Devil Moon is a song from the 1947 musical Finean's Rainbow. Here it is performed by the legendary Lena Horne. The Moon is a powerful symbol and source of myth. Lunacy.

The  idea transporting Homer's Odyssey from the ancient world to the Great Depression Era Southern United States and infusing it with American Roots music seemed/seems ridiculous until you realize it is the Coen Brother involved with T-Bone Burnett in charge of the music.  O Brother, Where Art Thou?  The signature song from the film was written in the early 20th Century (if not earlier). Dan Tyminski from Alison Krauss' band Union Station handles the vocals on I am a Man of Constant Sorrow.

I Believe in You was a hit for country music singer Don Williams in 1980.  About 28 years later, Nashville based alternative rock band, Lambchop recorded a cover of the song and put it on their OH (ohio) album. Kurt Wagner plays it pretty straight on this stripped down version of the song.
