RELEASE DAY 1/31/2020

A ton of new releases today - on the last day of the first month of 2020.  You can check out the full list (and all recent and forthcoming releases) at the bottom of this post.

Some highlights:

Eric Brace and Last Train Home - Daytime Highs and Overnight Lows (LP)

We most recently featured Eric Brace and his excellent Riverland album with Peter Cooper and Thomm Jutz.  He has teamed back up with his old band to release their first album in a dozen years. A fine songwriter and a great sounding record.
John Dennis - Mortal Flames (LP)

We have been featuring and anticipating this release for a couple of months now. I have been a fan for John Dennis for a couple years now, and I believe this is his finest album to date, and one that I am sure will be riding high on my favorites list for months to come.

Emma Hill - How Could I Have Been So Wrong (EP)

A newcomer to E2TG - Emma Hill is a singer-songwriter from Alaska. This one comes to us via Broken Jukebox Media and Adam Dawson - so my expectations were high, and what I have heard so far has not disappointed. Hope to get a first impression post up soon for this.

Ryan Sobb and the Dead Mall - Concrete Feelings (LP)

The first full-release from the 2019 E2TG Band of the Year. You can check out my "First Impression".

 Kristen Englenz - "Rebound" (single)
We are about a month away from the release of Ingenue. I have been eagerly awaiting the album release for a while now. Fortunately, February is a short month. Kristen Englenz is an E2TG favorite and this is another album that I will be talking about for months to come.

All of these releases and more can found on the brand new edition of the E2TG Featured Friday Playlist on Spotify.

Thursday Shuffle:

A mixed bag today - with some local favorites - some E2TG faves from years past - and a classic tune from my youth.

"Morse Code" by Tape Deck Mountain (from 21st Century Loosers: The Best of 2009-2019)

"Prove My Love" by Violent Femmes (from Violent Femmes)

Thanks to Blister in the Sun this debut album the album went platinum and finally hit the Billboard charts in 1991 - 9 years after its release. But, in my hometown and the time, only a few of us knew about it and it hit me hard - putting words and music to the raging storm of emotions and chemicals going on in my adolescent brain and body.

"Something Else" by Candy Apple and The Buddies (from Leprechaun to the Right)

Candy Apple and The Buddies (aka The Buddies) were/are a group featuring members of Smoking Flowers, Justin and the Cosmics, Pale Blue Dot, Welcome to Ashley, and Black Vincent. Here they are doing the Eddie Cochran song.

"Almost Gone" by Joe Goodkin (from Paper Arrows)
"Pretty Awful" by Magnapop (from The Circle is Round)
"It's a Shame" by Bonsai Universe (from Too Many Ghosts)

Three songs from 2019 releases - all very different.

"Whiskey Lie" by Andrea Stray (from Vacancy)

A 2010 release from Nashville/Los Angeles singer-songwriter Andrea Stray.

"You Bring The Class" by The Deadline Shakes (from Zealots)

"It's So Funny" by Dylan Rodrique (from Cat's Game)

"World's Smallest Confederate Veteran" by Luke Powers (from Hwy 100)

A wonderful song from songwriter and poet Luke Powers. I had the pleasure of performing on a spoken word night with him, the late David Olney, Rod Picott, and Rebecca Weiner Tompkins.

"Honey and Sugar" by Lori Kelley (from Under Stars and Storms)

Lori Kelley is a D.C. area transplant, but she has been here several years now. We was among the first group of people I met when I kind of emerged from the shadows into the Nashville music scene. She was a big part of the wonderful Sunday night shows at Bobby's Idle Hour (Eastside Invasion). She is a wonderful songwriter, and this is her most recent release.

E2TG First Impressions - Part 2

Welcome to the second edition of First Impressions where we check in on some recent and upcoming new releases and give you our - you guessed it - first impressions.

2020 is off to a rousing start - as evidenced by the Release Calendar which you can find at the bottom of our daily posts.  Periodically, we are going to offer some quick thoughts about these new releases as we take a first (or nearly first) listen.  If all goes as plans, we will have some longer posts about these releases, but the purpose here is to cover as much ground as we can.  Strap in...

Davis Raines - Turquoise and Silver (LP)

Davis Raines is one of Nashville's finest songwriters. His writing is in the tradition of Nashville's great writers. He writes with heart and he sings with conviction. He is a staple at Brown's Diner (as "Old Nashville" an establishment as you can get), and many of his usual cohorts show up on his latest album. My first impression is that this is an excellent album and a fine addition to respected career. The songs are top-notch and the recording is perfect for the songs.

John Dennis - Mortal Flames (LP)

Not my first impression, as I have been listening to this one for a while, but I wanted to post here on the eve of the release.  Mortal Flames is a concept album, and it is an ambitious concept which John Dennis manages to pull off in impressive fashion. My first impression was one of appreciation and awe, and the more I listen, the more impressed I become. I am confident this one will high on my list of favorites of this young year.
Ryan Sobb and the Dead Mall - Concrete Feelings (EP)
Reigning E2TG Band of the Year, Ryan Sobb and The Dead Mall are hitting the new year hard with this powerhouse EP.  My first impression of this (full disclosure, I got to hear it a couple of weeks ago) is that they have managed to do something that many bands cannot, and that is to effectively capture the energy of their live shows on a studio recording. These are great songs, played by a killer band that has hit their groove and yet are still constantly improving. I predict this will serve as a time capsule of an important moment in time for these young artists.

E2TG 1/29/2020 - Beach Notes - See the Shark Mix (Carnies and Poets Remix)

Beach Notes 1/28/2020:

Just some observations.  Once again, I was struck by the wealth and diversity of talent here in Nashville, and what a great city it is for someone who loves original live music. Adding to this feeling is knowing that there were people attending different events all over the city who were likely feeling the same thing.

Personally, I was struck by how much I have changed. I remembered going to shows in the early 1990s in Nashville.  Back then, I always went to shows with a friend and never knew anyone else at those shows except for the friend with whom I attended the show.  Now, I almost always go to shows alone and I always know other people.

My friends are pursuing their passions and dreams and muses the best they know how under exceedingly and increasingly difficult circumstances. And while, they sometimes express despair or frustration over circumstances, there is more often and sense of joy.

People who make their living by taking advantage of artists (or anyone for that matter) are the lowest.

Brian Wright and Sally Jaye's new project No. 1 Knife is fantastic. India Ramey is amazing. Taco Mouth is spectacular. Congrats to India Ramey on a wonderful residency that benefited some great organizations.  If you don't know India Ramey, get to work on correcting that.

$2 Tuesday remains the best investment in the city.  Week after week, Derek Hoke puts together an incredible show featuring local and touring artists and bands. Week after week, an interesting crowd gathers. Week after week, I get to hang out with friends and meet new people. Week after week, I am majorly tired on a Wednesday, but I have no complaints.

Wednesday Shuffle:

A typically mixed bag of mid-week shuffle goodness. Spanning years and genres.  Some old friends, some first listens, a great cover, and more...

"You've Got Some Nerve" by SNEW (from You've Got Some Nerve)

"Passion or Fashion" by Rusty Reid (from Head to Heart)

"I Work Alone" by Gary Daly (from Gone from Here)

From 2019 - a solo record by the China Crisis member.

"Comes Indiana Through the Smoke" by Okkervil River (from Away)

For Sue and Mark (and others) a song about Indiana. Got this from the 2016 edition of an annual mix CD put together by a friend from my hometown.

"Mack the Knife from The Threepenny Opera" by Nick Cave (from September Songs)

For Sue.  Not Bobby Darin and not the McDonald's moon guy either, but Kurt Weill (not Vile) and Bertolt Brecht from The Threepenny Opera. September songs is the audio version of a documentary about Weill.

"There Will Always Be A Right Now" by Brock Zeman (from Rotten Teeth)

We recently featured Brock Zeman's album of Tom House songs. Here is one of his own songs from a favorite album of mine.

"The Spoils of Warring Hearts" by The Walla Recovery (from With Trembling...)

One of the earliest bands covered on E2TG (the 14th week of the blog they were our Band of the Week).  They are/were from Dallas Texas and played cello rock music. It seems like most of the music these days is coming via member Zack Smith.

"When the Circus Came to Town" by Danny Sandock (from Breakin' New Ground)

A really wonderful song from our old friend Danny Sandock.

"Dinner With My Boss" by Karabas Barabas (from Degenerate National Anthem)
A first listen to the forthcoming (2/2/2020) album by the Brooklyn based absurbist rock band. Maybe offensive, maybe insightful, definitely funny and unique.  Looking forwarding to digging deeper into this album.

E2TG 1/28/2020 - India Ramey Finale - Field Day for the Heat Mix (Sesame Chicken Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

India Ramey Residency Finale - 1/28/2020 The 5 Spot 6:00PM

Excited to catch the finale of the India Ramey Residency at The 5 Spot tonight.  I sadly missed the first edition, but I have caught the last two weeks. Tim Easton has opened each week with a couple of songs, E2TG Artists of the Year have been well represented (Rayvon Pettis on Week 1 and Jon Latham on Week 3).  Wild Ponies played Week 2. Tonight's guest opener is No. 1 Knife (featuring E2TG 2016 Artist of the Year Brian Wright and Sally Jaye of 2017 Band of the Year Ladies Gun Club).  Taco Mouth will be the special guest.

All of the guests have been fantastic and I expect tonight will be no exception, but seeing India Ramey light up the stage with a full band has been a revelation. Her songs hit hard - snakes and devils are among the recurring themes (with skeletons on the stage). She has been playing songs from a forthcoming new album, and I cannot wait until that hits the world.

Tuesday Shuffle:

Today's shuffle starts with a 21 second track and ends with a 21 minute track - because that is how we roll at E2TG.

"Solidarite" by Dragon Welding (from Dragon Welding)

"Chinese Buffet" by The Royal Hounds (from Low Class Songs for High Class People)

The 2019 album by Nashville's The Royal Hounds slipped past me at the end of 2019, but it is great stuff.  Digging this song that made me hungry and hungry again an hour later. Sesame chicken!

"For What It's Worth" by The Staple Singers (from For What It's Worth)

Why is this Buffalo Springfield song still relevant over 50 years later?

"The Old Wilted Rose" by Chris and Adam Carroll (from Good Farmer)

"Shining Light" by MONO INC (feat. Tilo Wolff) (from The Book of Fire)

First listen to the recently released new album by German Alternative/gothic metal band MONO INC. They formed in 2000.  Tilo Wolff is a Swiss born German musician who formed the band Lacrimosa is 1990.

"Klangfarbenmelodie.. And The Colorist Strikes Primitiv (Part 1)" by Thurston Moore (from Klangfarbenmelodie.. And the Colorist Strikes Primitiv)

21 minutes of experimental noise from the 2018 reissue  of the 1995 release by Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth.  The record was originally released on CD only in New Zealand. FYI - the video playlist features a six minute extract of the album. I listened to the full 21 minutes from the end of my drive to my arrival at my office.
