So as previously reported, I will taking break next week and then I will try to get back on track, but I am also contemplating another upgrade to E2TG (version 4.0 maybe?) so this break may be a time to do that.  In the meantime, we do have a new Featured Friday Playlist for your enjoyment.   Please check it out.  And the usual disclaimers and suggestions apply:  Support the independent artists you like in a tangible way.

Diving back into live music tonight and tomorrow... social awkwardness combined with COVID-era awkwardness will abound, but I will have fun, too. 

Tonight: Mark Robinson early at Dee's and Brian Wright with Falcon Ranchero late at Dee's

Tomorrow: a private house show for the long-awaited release show for This Frontier Needs Heroes with some cool guests.  Bring it on!

Featured Friday Playlist recap Part 4 (Songs 36-45):

36. "Kickback (U and I)" by Rallo Green

First up, we have the new single from this singer, songwriter, producer, and musician from Hopkinsville, Kentucky. A fun summery song to start us off today.

37. "Black Hole Sun" by Leftover Salmon

Next up, a cover of the Soundgarden song from the jam band that formed in Boulder Colorado in 1989. It is from their new album Brand New Good Old Days 

38. "Saving Aimee" by Harri Larkin

Next up, UK pop funk trio Harri Larkin returns to the playlist with their new single. 

39. "Vain Shadows" by Clipe Circle

The latest single from this Scottish rock/metal band. They are expected to release their debut EP later this year. 

40. "Afterglow Dub" by The Nextmen

London based The Nextmen reunite with Eva Lazarus for their new single. Great stuff. 

41. "Shamans" by Tesla Shamans

Next up, we have the debut single from the forthcoming debut album (Electric Storm is due out May 17) by this hard rock band from Italy. 

42. "GAME" by Gears

Next up, more hard hitting rock music this time from this band from Miami that was founded in 2014.

43. "Talking Heads" by Benjamin Jayne

Next up, we have the lead track from the 2nd album by this trans-oceanic brother-sister duo. This new album features elements of rock, folk/singer-songwriter with some electronic elements. Sister Amanda is based in Barcelona while brother Benjamin is based in southern Vermont. 

44. "Fall Apart" by Robert Maniac

Next up, we have the debut single from this singer-songwriter based in London. An impressive debut. 

45. "Lost & Found" by Manolo Redondo

And we close this segment with the title track from the new EP  by this Paris-based singers-songwriter originally from the French Alps which was inspired by a trip to Mexico and the Mojave Desert. A great way to close out this segment of music.

E2TG 9/23/2020 - Busy Week - Some Days Mix (Silent Alarm Remix)

This has been a very busy week so far, and for a variety of reasons, I have felt constantly short on time. Yesterday, I intended to write a bit about being a contrarian, and then time slipped away. 

In short, the last six and half years (or more) have been about coming to accept the parts of me that are fundamental while simultaneously trying to change parts of myself that are acquired. I keep going back to the Serenity Prayer. Grant me the serenity to accept the things, I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.   And that is the challenge of realizing what I can (and should change) vs. what I need to learn to accept and even appreciate and nuture.

One conclusion I have is that I am a contrarian. The best way to get me not to do something is for a large number of people to tell me I should do it. Sometimes, I am proud of this trait - I see it as a mark of my individuality and independence. But, it can be annoying when something really interests me but because I am hearing a constant refrain that I "must do this or watch that or listen to this" I resist and refuse. 

And it isn't just the nameless, faceless masses that elicit this response - even if it is people whose opinions and tastes that I respect - I will still get this reaction. But to clarify, it is different if someone makes a recommendation of an artist - shoot, I am not sure how to explain this... 

I guess television (under which I include streaming services). That buzz worthy show that you call think the best and that you insist that I watch (and by that I don't mean directly insist that I watch it - but you know... "everyone must watch this" - well the chances are I am not going to watch it until the buzz has died down. Even if I really want to watch it. And that is where this is annoying. It is not an intentional action - it just seems to be a part of who I am. 

Another more cogent example... E2TG occasionally leans heavily toward roots/Americana music. I am in Nashville and a lot of my friends play this type of music, I once wrote for No Depression, I like a lot of music that falls under this moniker. I have a lot of friends whose tastes run toward this (admittedly broadly defined style of music) and I have made some great connections through this type of music. However, anytime, I feel that E2TG is starting to go to far toward being an Americana/roots blog - I have an almost automatic reaction and start seeking out metal and punk and darkwave and shoegaze and indie pop. This is not to say that my interest in these other genres and styles is not genuine - it very much is. But, I sometimes, I think I end up unintentionally alienated some people. 

But, it all comes back to what is a behavior that I can (and want to change) and what is a behavior that is just who I am and which I need to learn to accept and appreciate. No answers... just endless questions.

19. "Northern Song" by The Asteroid No. 4

San Francisco based Psych band The Asteroid No. 4 return to the Playlist with the title track of their new album. The band originated in the 1990s in Philadelphia. They have a great sound, that I am happy to have in the Playlist. 

20. "Some Days" by Wayne Graham

Kentucky based rock band Wayne Graham also make a return visit to the Playlist with a track from their forthcoming (Nov. 13) album 1% Juice. The band is led by two brothers: Kenny and Hayden Miles. This is a wonderful song. 

21. "Silent Alarm" by Fabian Jack

Next up, we have the new single from London-based five piece band Fabian Jack. The song is warning about the dire state of the environment. 

22. "Milk" by Wynnm

Next up, we have a really lovely track from an artist who has roots in the American Southwest (born to a harmonica playing father and a 1st generation Korean-American mother. Wynnm currently resides in Amsterdam. The music is rich and diverse and everything I love for my shuffle. 

23. "Myfyrwyr Rhyngwladol" by HMS Morris

The title may have given this away, but HMS Morris is an art rock band from Wales. This is a great way to close out this segment of music. By the way, the title translates to "International Students".

India Ramey Residency Finale - 1/28/2020 The 5 Spot 6:00PM

Excited to catch the finale of the India Ramey Residency at The 5 Spot tonight.  I sadly missed the first edition, but I have caught the last two weeks. Tim Easton has opened each week with a couple of songs, E2TG Artists of the Year have been well represented (Rayvon Pettis on Week 1 and Jon Latham on Week 3).  Wild Ponies played Week 2. Tonight's guest opener is No. 1 Knife (featuring E2TG 2016 Artist of the Year Brian Wright and Sally Jaye of 2017 Band of the Year Ladies Gun Club).  Taco Mouth will be the special guest. 

All of the guests have been fantastic and I expect tonight will be no exception, but seeing India Ramey light up the stage with a full band has been a revelation. Her songs hit hard - snakes and devils are among the recurring themes (with skeletons on the stage). She has been playing songs from a forthcoming new album, and I cannot wait until that hits the world.

First listen to the recently released new album by German Alternative/gothic metal band MONO INC. They formed in 2000.  Tilo Wolff is a Swiss born German musician who formed the band Lacrimosa is 1990.

"Klangfarbenmelodie.. And The Colorist Strikes Primitiv (Part 1)" by Thurston Moore (from Klangfarbenmelodie.. And the Colorist Strikes Primitiv)

21 minutes of experimental noise from the 2018 reissue  of the 1995 release by Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth.  The record was originally released on CD only in New Zealand. FYI - the video playlist features a six minute extract of the album. I listened to the full 21 minutes from the end of my drive to my arrival at my office.
