E2TG 1/21/2020 - Recent Live Shows - Wasted Saturdays Mix (Lavender Child Remix)

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

To be honest, every since we got the news Saturday night about David Olney, that has been the most on my mind. I did want to check in about a couple of live music shows that I caught over the weekend.

Friday night, I caught another Tim Carroll Rock N Roll Happy Hour at The 5 Spot. He does this every Friday from 6-8:30 (with no breaks) and done so for several years. I was trying to remember the last Friday he missed, and I had to go back to somewhere around 2014. The remarkable thing is that the show is all originals (I think "Uncle John" which he does sometimes is a traditional song), and every show is different.  Friday's show featured several of what I consider "classic" Tim Carroll songs plus some new ones. It is all good, all loud, and a great way to spend a Friday evening.

Saturday, I headed back to The 5 Spot for another rock and roll show. This one featured Hannah Fairlight Group, Nashville Non Prophets, and The Truehearts.  Hannah Fairlight Group rocked hard. Nashville Non Prophets featuring Mitch Laney came out with a high energy assault and never let up. The Truehearts remain a favorite of mine. They rock, but in a more subtle way and together it was a great show.

I posted my review of Sunshine Boys opening for Juliana Hatfield at Basement East.

Sunday Night was the CD Release Show for John Dennis' Mortal Flames. I referenced that show in my piece on David Olney yesterday.  To expound, just a little because I am short on time.  John Dennis'  Mortal Flames is a concept album about Life and Death and everything in between. It is a bit about our immortality being tied to the light we leave with others. It is heavy at time, but it is ultimately a life affirming work, and I suspect it will be among my favorites of 2020 when the year is said and done.

Wild Wednesday Morning Shuffle - My Kind of Town Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

*Note: The video playlist at the bottom of the post attempts to closely approximate the shuffle I listened to on my way to work this morning. When a video for a song was not available, I substituted another song by the same artist. When I could not find any videos by an artist, I included a related video or did not include a video for that track. This blog may reference unreleased tracks, however, no unreleased music is ever included.

The E2TG 8th Anniversary is underway - Next Show October 2!

September 25 - Week 1: Ben Arthur + Conrad y Skordalia (SUCCESS!)

October 2 - Week 2: Ryan Sobb + Don Gallardo (Album Release Show)

(TONIGHT!!!!!!)

October 9 - Week 3: The Truehearts + Jason Erie

October 16 - Week 4:  Josh Gray  + Meghan Hayes

October 23 - Week 5: Microwave Mountain + The Big Dumb

In about six hours Ryan Sobb and his band will be taking The 5 Spot stage to kick off Week 2 of the E2TG 8th Anniversary Residency.  Don Gallardo and How Far West will be up after that with their album release show.  So excited!

Wild Wednesday Morning Shuffle - Get Off the Pot Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Last night was one of those nights that reminds me why I love Nashville so much.  Bill Lloyd did an early show at The 5 Spot with a great band doing classic and new songs - both those he wrote and choice covers.  He will be back next week and then again for the final Tuesday in November.

Then, I hung around for Derek Hoke's $2 Tuesday. One of the absolute best things this town has to offer. $2 cover, $2 Yazoo beer, consistently great music, and an awesome hang with the coolest of people.

Seeing Rayvon Pettis and Megan Palmer together was a highlight.  And Derek Hoke and his band were as always fantastic.

The audience was filled with a who's who of great artists.  If I believed in namedropping, I would tell you that Aaron Lee Tasjan, Bobby Bare Jr., Zach Schmidt, Jon Byrd, Jon Latham, Joe Fletcher and more were there.  But, like Wynonna told me when I met her a couple of years ago, namedropping is unseemly.

Seriously, I had some inspiring and motivating conversations, and so what if I am really tired today....

Add on the encouraging election results from different places, and I am actually feeling pretty good today.

It is Wednesday and we get "Wild" on Wednesday.  Let's shuffle:

Wild Wednesday Morning Shuffle - Any Day Now Mix

So, I have a serious question... with mounting evidence of collusion with the Russians to alter the results of the U.S. Presidential Elections and  the clear indications of officials lying about it, is there not anything that can be done to minimize the damage this administration can do before this matter is fully investigated and adjudicated? I'm thinking about long-term things like the Supreme Court nomination....
********************************************************************************

Man - allergies or whatever really laid me low last night.  (knock on wood), I am feeling better today.

Today is Wednesday - the day we shuffle up ALL of the songs stored in the memory on my phone. I call it Wild Wednesday.  Today we have some recent releases and some older releases.

Let's see where this shuffle takes us.

Theme Thursday Morning Shuffle - What Do You Know About Revolution Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

I have a really big announcement coming soon!  It's going to be huge! The best announcement ever. People are saying so, smart people. It will probably be the biggest announcement ever made. It will make all those other announcements look tiny in comparison...

Theme Thursday returns just in the nick of time. For those who missed our first two editions, each month I will create a playlist of songs somehow (in my warped mind) related to a theme of my choosing that will not be revealed. Each Thursday, I will shuffle songs from that playlist, and offer, without direct explanation of how or why these songs fit the unnamed theme.  By the way, this is the last Thursday of January so expect a new theme next Thursday.  You may think you have figured out my theme, but I will neither confirm nor deny. And, I do need to offer the disclaimer that I do not intend to imply that the singers or writers of these songs adhere to any belief system implied or inferred by the undisclosed theme.  In some cases, it is just the title (or even a line) that fits my theme or it may be the subject (as interpreted by me) or it may be both or it may be some more esoteric reason.

In any case, it's a cool collection of songs, and that is never a bad thing...

Wild Wednesday Morning Shuffle - I'll Play the Fool Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Rainy morning in Nashville.

Had a fun night last night.  Recorded Saturday's Double Shot show, made it to The Family Wash in time to catch most of Amelia White and Sergio Webb being awesome.  Then headed to The 5 Spot for the first $2 Tuesday of the new year.  Derek Hoke actually opened for a change and was accompanied by Paul Niehaus - wonderful.  Adrian + Meredith always terrific. Vandoliers from Texas - really enjoyed, Erica Blinn - great set, and The Mulligan Brothers (Mobile, AL) closed things out in fne style.  Great people and good times. One of my favorite hangs.

We have a Wild Wednesday shuffle which entails shuffling up every single song in my phone memory and seeing what comes up...

Earie Friday Morning Shuffle - Live Like a Brahman Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Well, we reached the final shuffle of 2016,  Before we get to it, a few things:

Last night I attended what will likely end up being my final live show of the year, and what a way to got out!  If you don't know, and if I have not made it abundantly clear, David Olney is a national treasure. I count myself fortunate to have had the opportunity to see him perform live several times in 2016, and last night was quite possibly the best performance ever.  In addition to being one of the best living songwriters, he is a consummate performer.  Last night his band - Ward Stout on fiddle, Daniel Seymour on bass, and Justin Amaral on drums were absolutely on point. You may or may not know that David Olney had a very nasty fall down a flight of stairs a couple of months back, and he (and we) are very fortunate that it was not more serious than it was. If there was any doubt about his recovery, he laid that to rest with a two hour set (it would have been a non-stop two hour set but for a broken guitar string) that showcased his power both as a songwriter and a performer.

As if that was not enough, the one and only Derek Hoke opened the night with a solo set that showcased his amazing abilities.  Olney said it was like watching Roy Orbison.

Talk about a quintessential Nashville night of music. To cap it off, I got to hang out with 2015 E2TG Artist of the Year (and my friend) Jon Latham for a few hours that culminated with eating Taco Bell in a parking lot about midnight and hearing some of the mixes from his forthcoming album, Lifers, which I am stating for the record will be one of the best albums of 2017.

I have some outside-the-shuffle "Earies" to distribute:

1.  The "All Rhodes Lead to Somewhere" award goes to Eli Rhodes.  I reviewed his album Ghost Therapy back in June, and then he went a released Deux earlier this month.  Ghost Therapy was confessional and vulnerable with just some flat-out great songwriting.  My December has been so messed up that I haven't had a chance to check out Deux, but I plan to rectify that soon.

2.  The "90 Miles" Award goes to Ben de la Cour. Back in August, I had the distinct pleasure of premiering Ben de la Cour's music video for "(Ain't Going) Down that Road" from his album Midnight in Havana album.  (Cuba is 90 miles from the US, Havana is in Cuba thus the award name).  I was first introduced to de la Cour's music via the Couch by Couchwest on-line music festival (which was another casualty of this awful year).  Since the time, I first heard him, he moved to Nashville, and I finally got to meet him. He is an awesome songwriter who draws on some unique life experiences to make some amazing music.

3.  The "Precipitation Award" goes to Drew Kohl.  I reviewed his latest release New Rain earlier this year.  Kohl is one of my favorite songwriters and favorite people.  Among his many talents is being able to sustain a note vocally for an insanely long time - plus he does a really awesome cover of the Ramones' song "I Wanna Be Sedated".  Requested next time you see him live.

4.  The "Impatience and Growth" Award goes to Josh Morris.  Morris produced Jon Latham's Real Bad News Album and he is producing, Lifers which I mentioned above.  As good as Real Bad News is  (and it is really, really good and you need to own it if you don't) it was amazing to hear how much Josh Morris has grown as a producer in the year or so since that album was made. It is equally astounding to hear how much Josh Morris has grown as a songwriter and performer - which is evident from his latest album Can't Wait 'Til Now which I reviewed back at the beginning of this month.  You may recall that Morris was one half of the band And the Giraffe which was a featured band in the early days of E2TG - through some pretty mind-blowing coincidences, I reconnected with him a couple of years ago, and I have been impressed by all he had accomplished.

Okay - so the deal is after today's post, I will still have a few Earie Awards to hand out. So my current plan is to do a special post Monday to award the final "Earie Awards" and then Tuesday I will reveal my "Artist/Band of the Year" and then we can jump into the new year with both feet on Wednesday. Deal?

The shuffle yields a few more "Earies" - let's do it!

Wild Wednesday Morning Shuffle - Gin and Tonic Mix

Be sure to "Like" Ear to the Ground on Facebook!

Well! Made it to the mid-point of the week.  Being off Monday has thrown everything off for me...

Last night, I had a great night at The High Watt.  Seeing Todd Farrell perform for the first time in I don't know how long - it was great to be reminded of what an incredible songwriter he is. Heard some old favorites plus some songs which will be on the next Benchmarks album whenever that comes out. Saw Arliss Nancy from Denver for the first time last night. Really dug their music and energy.  Then, I got to catch the first part of Bill Eberle's set - same band as I saw at the Basement a few weeks back. Still awesome.

Then, I had to dart across the river to catch the last part of the Family Wash set of Sean Quinn and the Tremblers (featuring Jon Latham on guitar).  Man these guys sounded so good. Kind of a power poppy vibe - think Big Star/ Beatles and and... Great songs - can't wait for the album!

Well - we have a pretty wild shuffle for a Wednesday.  Note - I could not find several of the actual songs for the video playlist, but I made some strategic substitutions. Enjoy.
