Well, Nashville has had more than its share of rain the past few days. I got a pretty good soaking walking back to my car yesterday.
Another incredible residency show started last night at The 5 Spot. Rod Picott began his month-long series with Jon Byrd opening. Both singer-songwriters were backed by an incredible band: Sergio Webb, Tim Blankenship, and Duane Blevins. A really amazing show for $5 that could get you home before 9:00pm. I would love to see Nashville/East Nashville showing a lot more support for these early shows.
Anyway, I didn't make it home before 9:00pm, because I hung around for the late show which was the monthly Songs Not Silence benefit for Thistle Farms (which is an incredible organization), and which featured a lot of awesome music. I was happy to get to see Nellie Clay perform before she heads out on a series of out-of-town gigs. Also good to get to see Megan Palmer play before she takes some time off to take care of some medical issues. By the way, today is Megan's birthday! So, Happy Birthday Megan!
Well, this short work week has been kind of weird, but it is Thursday and so we push forward with some throwback tunes and noise and stuff...

Anyway, we devote on day a week to exploring the past. We call it Throwback Thursday because we are sheep who blindly follow standard internet conventions.
Today's #tbt shuffle awaits, but first...
A massively fun evening at The 5 Spot. Hanging with some good friends and rubbing elbows with some musical heavyweights... some of whom happen to be friends, too. Lowell Levinger was amazing... including a David Olney (who was in attendance) song in his set.
Tim Lee 3 killed as always - a good preview to BARK's appearance next week.

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle - Here Comes the Night Mix

We are back after taking yesterday off to celebrate Labor Day here in the U.S. I have seen 8 different live performances since my last post.
Sunday night at Foobar, I saw Ryan Dishen, Sioux City Kid, Adrian and Meredith Krygowski, and then long time #E2TG favorites Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray (full band). I saw Miss Shevaughn and Yuma Wray back in July as a duo where they really stripped their songs down, and that was a fun show. Here the band was tight and they blew the roof off the place.
Last night, I headed out to The East Room for a show that featured three Nashville acts and one band from New York. Toot Sweet from NYC opened the show. We featured them on Ear to the Ground before. They are part of the Mama Coco's Funky Kitchen collective, and thus became the first MCFK band that I have seen live. They were remarkable. Highly distinctive and original sound rooted in interesting older music in a style they call Cabaret Soul. My good friends, Western Shore were next, and they delivered like they always do with their unique brand of Americana music. The Wooly Mama's were next and delivered a high energy performance that was a lot of fun. The headliners were The Lonely Bastards who were celebrating and giving away copies of their new vinyl single. I had seen them some time ago, and I remember that I enjoyed them, but it was good to be reminded of what I liked.
Tonight, Megan Palmer, Amy Speace, Tim Easton, and 2014 E2TG Artist of the Year, Darrin Bradbury are doing a round at the legendary Bluebird Café. It will be Darrin's debut at the Bluebird, and is either a sign that Nashville is changing or else it is some other kind of sign... either way, I am so proud of him.
Today's shuffle as well as the recent live performances I have seen have been further evidence that there is so much great much out in the world right now. The old music business may or may not be dying, and yes it is hard for band's to make money, and yet, every day, I discover and rediscover people who continue to make highly music and then put it out into the world.

Monday Morning Music Shuffle - Return of the Living Dead Mix

Well... after a week long bout with the flu, I can safely say that I am back from the grave and ready to party!
Hall of Fame update - 1. I at least have a template for the Hall of Fame page entries. I was beginning to work more on the page when I fell ill. - doesn't "fell ill" sound so sophisticated? Let me tell you - the reality was pretty awful. 2. I came up with a list of notable omissions from my initial class of twenty - some of these were due to being first mentioned in the pre-blogger days, some due to alternate spellings affecting the tag count. In any event, I will be adding those names soon.
p.s. I have a literal ton of songs waiting to be added to the active playlist.*
*confession: I have no clue how much a song weighs so I can't truly say that I literally have a ton of songs to add... but it's a bunch.
Let's ease back into things with a pretty nifty Monday Shuffle

Tuesday Morning Music Shuffle - Foggy Notion Mix

For me, the thing about Lou Reed's music that is most significant is not that it made me fall in love with Lou Reed's music, it is that it opened up my mind to the possibilities of what music could be. It started this life-long quest for what is next and what else is there. Certainly, I did fall in love with Lou Reed's music both in and out of the Velvet Underground, but I didn't stay there. I don't know how many posts I say in the hours after the news of his death broke about Lou Reed being the doorkeeper or gatekeeper. It was also so gratifying to see a very diverse list of people who acknowledged the influence that Lou Reed had on their music.
See, I don't write Ear to the Ground to make money - I would have quit long ago if that were the case, and I don't write to make friends with so many cool artists - although that it is a pretty nifty side-effect. I write Ear to the Ground (and I keep writing on those days when I am not sure anyone is reading) because music moves me. Lou Reed's music moves me and the band who you've never heard about - there music moves me. And the music that is being made somewhere in the world that I haven't heard yet - that moves me. See, I'm passionate about music. I write Ear to the Ground because even if I stopped writing this blog, I would still be thinking about music and wondering what was next and what else was out there waiting for me to hear.

Earlier this year, E2TG featured several songs by Christian Robins from his debut mixtape called KidGrownUp. At the time, he didn't have any videos for us to feature. However, he just dropped the Official Video for his song "Suburban Trap Rap". So we thought we would post it now.

Friday Morning Music Shuffle - Camp Crystal Lake Mix

I am a long-time triskaidekaphobe, but so far (knock on wood), today has been pretty good. We had a change in the weather here in Nashville, and the heat and humidity finally broke into a sunny and rather cool day. Which is good because it is really hard to get excited about the return of Pumpkin Spice anything when it's mid 90s and humid. It just is.
Well circumstances being circumstantial, I don't have the hoped for music explosion today - just a regular old shuffle. Still, as regular old shuffles go, this one is pretty sweet.

You know it is almost a literal statement that you can hardly walk a block in Nashville without walking past a songwriter. But, it is a rare and wonderful occasion to be able to see three amazing songwriters sharing songs for free in the middle of a weekday.
Today, a mostly mellowish mix of music that just kind of feels right...

Rejoice! Yes, it's back to work after a long weekend. Work. A four letter word if I ever heard one, but there is cause for celebration. Our friends, Matthew and Livia, aka The End Men, have unveiled a brand new song accompanied by a stunning music video. The song is called "Work". You can grab the single of "Work" featuring an unreleased b-side called "Ratking" along with a download of the Video -right now at the band's Bandcamp page:

Monday Morning Music Shuffle - Controversial Mix

Well, here we go. We ended up with a tie for Band of the Month! Our crack legal staff are currently reviewing the results. I went to bed before midnight, and the poll format we are using does not automatically cut-off voting at any particular time. It has to be done manually. So this morning, we had a tie, however, a few votes were received after midnight. We will be reviewing to make sure we were clear enough in setting the deadline. In the meantime, what I can tell you is that And the Giraffe and The Great American Novel have both earned a spot in the Band of the Year Poll which will be kicking off in just a couple of months. Congrats to both of those great bands. We will post an official Band of the Month announcement once we have made a final determination.
Second, I'm pleased to reveal and announce our Featured Artists for October. I think we have a another great and diverse group of bands and artists. Again, we will have an "official" Featured Artist announcement soon, but in the mean time, go HERE to check out the 10 Featured Artists for October.
We are in a brand new month which means tomorrow (if all goes as expected) we will be posting a shuffle of a brand new playlist of songs. Before we do that, though, we created a Highlights Playlist of songs we added to our database in July and August but have not yet had the chance to present to you. So, today's shuffle includes 4 songs from that Playlist.
First up, we have a song from OK, the debut EP from Mr. Kind. Mr. Kind is the new band featuring July Featured Artist Brian Bergeron. The song we present today is a nifty number called, The Artist.
And finally, we have an awesome cover of one of my all-time favorite songs. On October 26, 2010, 50+ Bay Area bands got together and played a live tribute to the seminal album The Velvet Underground and Nico. From that show, we have Meklit Hadero - an acoustic soul singer/songwriter performing I'll Be Your Mirror.
